It is hard to believe that once again we are fast approaching the end of our school year together. Doesn’t it seem to
have blinked by? This year our annual Dads’ BBQ holds a special significance, as Kenollie PS is celebrating 60 great
years! As always, the Dads’ BBQ is an event not to be missed! However, this year’s event, to be held on Wednesday,
June 8th from 4:30-7:30 pm will have some very special activities! Here is a list of the special events so that you don’t
miss out!
All Day June 8th: We are inviting students and staff to dress like they are from a Kenollie Decade! We look
forward to seeing all of the great costumes!
All Day June 8th: We will have a special guest book for signatures of those who visit during the day or during the
Dads’ BBQ.
All Day June 8th: We will have a group of students giving school tours throughout the day to those who are
visiting from years past.
At the Dads’ BBQ: We will be sharing a video from our 60th Anniversary Concert – held May 18th, featuring all
of our classes.
At the Dads’ BBQ: We will have a special ceremony during the Dads’ BBQ at 5:30 pm to recognize our 60th,
including some special speeches and a cake cutting ceremony.
We are looking forward to seeing you all there to celebrate our great year together!
At this time of year we also like to extend warm wishes and say goodbye to our Graduating class of students! We are
very excited for all of our graduates and look forward to honouring them at the Graduation Ceremony on Wednesday,
June 29th at 1:30 pm. We would also like to extend well wishes to some of our K-5 students and their families as they
transition to new schools for September. We will miss you all and would like to warmly extend our thanks for all that
you have contributed to the Kenollie community. Through your participation, volunteering, many fundraising activities
and efforts you have had a significant impact on Kenollie and our school and community has truly benefitted. We wish
you all continued success!
Finally, we would like to draw your attention to page 3 of the newsletter where we wish some of our staff members a
fond farewell; Mme. Zbogar and Ms Dennis-Moore will be moving on to new roles at other schools for September.
We know that change is difficult, but we thank you for all that you have done to make a difference here at Kenollie
Public School.
As always at this time of the year I like to draw special attention and
thanks to the very generous Kenollie Community! In addition to the
amazing funds raised to support our school (please see page 3 for a list of
all of the amazing supports provided through School Council funds!), our
families have come together this year to support SOAR, Fort McMurray,
The Terry Fox Foundation and are currently raising funds for the Heart
and Stroke Foundation through participation in Jump Rope for Heart!
Your giving nature trickles down to the children and many of them
approach me with their own ideas and initiatives (please see page 3 for
more details). For example, with a goal to raise funds for Fort McMurray,
Emma H. and Keeley B. held a lemonade fundraiser over the weekend and
raised $105.00! Way to go girls!
Community events like this, where we all come together to support one another are what make Kenollie a truly
wonderful place to work and learn! Have a happy summer everyone, I can’t wait to come back to Kenollie in
September when we can do it all over again!
Sincerely,
Jennifer El Refaie, Proud Principal of Kenollie Public School
We’re looking forward to seeing everyone out at this year’s

other parents supporting this wonderful event!

who have completed their terms, Laura Halbert (Co-Chair), Allison
Mullet (Co-Chair and Treasurer) and Shaylene Finch (Secretary), for
their hard work and selfless dedication to their roles on School
Council this past year. They have given a lot of time and energy and
will be greatly missed. It has been a pleasure working alongside this
amazing team of parents!
School Council executive positions are elected annually and
nomination forms and more information will be sent home in early
September.
Together you have raised money to purchase many wonderful

September 2016!
Thank you once again for everything you do to
help Kenollie students thrive!
As always with this time of the year, I would like to take some time to
wish those leaving Kenollie a fond farewell. It has been an incredible
year, and we wish you all of the very best!
Our first goodbye is for Mme Zbogar. It’s hard to believe that you
only started with us two years ago and we are saying goodbye! You
have done a remarkable job bringing our team sports participation to
new heights! Over the past year, Mme Zbogar has organized a
student team for soccer, European Handball, Kickball, Volleyball, and
Track & Field. In addition, she also organized intramurals like
Quidditch, Badminton, and Volleyball. Your expertise in the gym as
our PE and Health teacher also brought our school to a new level!
And this is all in addition to your French Program! Thanks for
making French such a passion for many of our students! I know that
your work has lead to more students than normal choosing the
Extended French program at GreenGlade Senior Public School.
Mme Zbogar is returning to her previous school, Conestoga Public
School, where she will resume her role as Core French teacher.
Although we are sad to see her go, we would like to wish her all of the
very best as she transitions! Best wishes from all of us here at
Kenollie!
Our only other good-bye for this school year is Ms Dennis-Moore!
Once again, we were so thrilled to have Ms Dennis-Moore working
with our staff and students, as she does such a remarkable job! Ms.
Dennis-Moore was covering for Mrs. Foster while she was at home
with her new baby and her family! It was a pleasure having Ms
Dennis-Moore continue in this role throughout this school year and I
know that she will be greatly missed by her students, families and
many staff within the school. Thanks for making such an
incredible difference with your students and for all of the
new technology and communication tools you introduced
us to! I know that you will all join me in wishing Ms
Dennis-Moore good luck with the upcoming hiring
opportunities that will be taking place throughout the
summer.
During our May Scorch Assembly, 3 of our Kenollie students, Oscar,
Henry and Matilda B. announced a very special upcoming series of
recess activities for Primary students! They made announcements this
week, held a sign-up and attending a meeting with Ms El Refaie.
Starting next week, on Tuesday and Thursday, students in Grades 1—
3 will be able to participate in the first sport—Gaga Ball! I know that
there was a flurry of activity at the sign-up location this week and I
am excited to support this student led initiative!
I am thrilled to announce that there are two other
student led initiatives happening at our school!
Jaya B. and Sofia S-P. have been busy making and
selling their book marks in support of the Fort
McMurray relief effort. This week saw great sales and the girls look
forward to announcing their total at the next Scorch Assembly!
Finally, coming on June 22nd, three students in Grade 4 Keeley B.,
Meghan O., and Paige S. are organizing a student dance party outside
during the lunch hour. More details will follow on the
announcements, but we wanted you to save the date for this
fun event. The students are raising funds for the World
Wildlife Foundation and they will be selling popsicles, and
freezies during the event!
IMPORTANT CHANGE COMING SEPTEMBER 2016
Report student absences through new SafeArrival system
Beginning Sept. 6, 2016, all parents/guardians need to report their children’s full-day absences, late arrivals and/or early departures from school via our new auto-
mated SafeArrival phone number at 1-855-209-6155, online at
pdsb.schoolconnects.com, or by downloading the mobile app for Apple and An-droid devices. For absences longer than 5 consecutive school days, please contact the school office. Parents are encouraged to provide an email address to schools. Parents who have an email address on file at school will receive an email invitation from Synrevoice Technologies during the week of August 29th. The invitation will include login in-formation. Starting the week of August 29th, parents who do not have an email address on file at the school can visit pdsb.schoolconnects.com and choose CREATE LOGIN to create your account and receive login credentials that can be used online or with the mobile app. Parents need to have a cell phone that is capable of receiving text messages to complete the setup process. The cell phone number must be on file with the school. All three options are available 24 hours a day. Beginning in September 2016, there will no longer be an absence reporting phone line at school. If you have any questions or require any assistance, contact the school directly at 905-278-8991.

On the road again—how to keep your cyclist safe
Here are some tips you can review with your child to ensure bike season gets off to a great start:
The right fit
children should be able to straddle the bike with both feet on the ground
a bike that is too big or too small can be a safety hazard
the helmet should fit — if it’s too loose, it could fall off, if it’s too tight, it’s uncomfortable
Get noticed
a young child's bike should be equipped with a bell and reflector
older riders should have a light and/or reflectors
Follow the rules
no riding on busy streets
no riding at night
stop for all STOP signs
Actions that cause injuries
driveway ride out—not stopping and looking both ways before entering the street
running the stop sign
turning without warning
cycling in the dark
following the leader—one child goes through a stop sign or misses a parked car but the second cyclist doesn’t
Preparing for the summer sun Excessive exposure to the sun can lead to health concerns such as sunburn and skin cancer. As summer approaches and the weather
gets warmer, it is necessary to apply sunscreen to protect ourselves from too much sun damage and burns.
In summer, we are exposed to higher levels of ultraviolet (UV) rays. This exposure is a risk factor for developing skin cancer and
cataracts later in life. The UV index is the measure commonly used in Canada to assess the strength of the sun’s UV rays risk on a
given day.
What is the UV Index?
The index scale ranges from 0 to 10. The higher the value, the more intense ultraviolet rays.
The UV index is calculated daily by Environment Canada using ozone and weather information. It can vary from day to day with
changes in the ozone layer – the thinner the ozone layer, the higher the index reading.
How to protect your family from the sun?
Wear a hat (preferably with a broad brim), sunglasses and protective clothing on sunny days.
Use sunscreen with a SPF of 15 or greater whenever you're outdoors.
Encourage your children to play in shady areas if they are outside for a long period of time.
Remember that sunburn can occur even on a cloudy day, as up to 80 per cent of UV rays can penetrate light clouds, and 40 per
cent of UV rays can bounce back from sand, water or concrete.
Summer activities that boost learning Kindergarten to grade 4 Sorting and stacking – Teach classification skills with dinnerware. Ask your child to match and stack dishes of similar sizes and
shapes. Also have your child sort flatware – forks with forks, spoons with spoons. This is like recognizing the shapes of letters and
numbers.
Comic strip writing – Use comic strips to help with writing. Cut the segments of a comic strip apart and ask your child to arrange
them in order. Then ask your child to fill in the words of the characters (orally or in writing).
Float and sink – Encourage hypothesizing (guessing). Use several objects – soap, a dry sock, a bottle of shampoo, a wet sponge, an
empty bottle. Ask your child which objects will float when dropped into water in a sink or bathtub. Then drop the objects in the wa-
ter, one by one, to see what happens.
Grades 5 to 8 Follow the news – As a family, choose an important news event to follow for a day or two. Ask each person to find as much infor-
mation on the topic as possible – read newspapers, listen to the radio and watch TV news. Then talk about what everyone learned.
Pro and con: what do you think? – Make a family game of discussing a special issue. For example, "Teenagers should be allowed
to vote," or "There should never be any homework." Ask your children to think of all the reasons they can to support their views.
Then ask them to think of reasons opposing their views. Which views are most convincing? For variety, assign family members to
teams and have them prepare their arguments pro and con.
Stretch, run, walk – Ask your child to do at least one kind of exercise every day. For example, run or walk briskly for 10 minutes.
Walk, when possible, instead of driving, for any distance less than a mile. Have your child make a week-long exercise plan. Try to
think of a modest reward for sticking to the plan and exercise with your child.
Let your voice be heard – Promote good citizenship. Help your child write a letter to the editor of the local newspaper about an
issue affecting children – for example, suggest that a bike path be built near the school or that a city event be planned for youngsters.
Children are citizens, and their ideas are worth hearing.
