Backpacks of HopeLOCALS START AN AMAZING PROGRAM FEEDING SANDPOINT’S CHILDREN

He was a little guy, the number-one child on the teacher’s priority list of kids who needed food assistance. The teacher took him aside and explained that she had something for him, then

showed him the backpack full of food. He looked as if he had won the lottery.

“I get to have all this food? It’s for me? I get to eat this weekend?” he asked.

“Yes,” she said, “but remember to bring the backpack back on Monday.”

He was confused. “I have to bring it all back on Monday?”

“No,” she explained. “We’re going to fill it up again and you can take it home again next Friday.”

“I get to eat every weekend?” he asked, his eyes big as plates.

“Yes,” she told him. “Every weekend.”

“My mom’s gonna cry,” he said.

The next Monday, the boy was the first one back to school, Backpack in hand and asked how many days it would be until he could have more.

How Real is the Need in Sandpoint?

Many of us don’t realize but there are over 1,300 local kids that go home on the weekends to empty cupboards and refrigerators. “The need is real,” states Lisa Bell “and the problem is its getting worse, not better.” Over 60% of students are on reduced or free lunch programs in the Bonner County school district. The need in this community may get overlooked because of the perception that many have of the town itself. Surrounded by the beauty our landscape portrays, its easy to go about your business not realizing that many local kids are not able to have decent meals over the weekends. In 2009, while visiting with family and friends in Beaver, CO, Susan Hayes a local Sandpoint resident discovered a program a friend of hers was involved in called the “Backpack Program” out of North Lincoln, Oregon. This program

discreetly provides nutritious, child-friendly, easy-to-prepare food to children in every day backpacks to take home over the weekends and out-of-school times. Knowing the need locally for such a program, Susan reached out to Allice Wallace, Sandpoint’s Food Bank director. “She has been amazing sharing what little she has with us,” Susan comments.

“We started in a closet at the Food Bank and now were using the shipping department at Coldwater Creek” Susan went on to say. “The first year we made homemade backpacks and supplied about 100 weekend meals in total. Now we are sending out 150 backpacks every month.” To put this in perspective, the cost to fund this many meals each month is over $40,000 per year. “Our biggest challenge right now is funding,” Lisa says. “Each backpack has about 10 pounds of food in it.”

When asked about their goals for the program both describe the ability to serve all of Sandpoint’s children in need of food. “There’s a real need here,” Lisa comments, “and we want to be able to provide food for over a 1,000 kids each weekend.” The goals are ambitious but necessary, we live in a great

community and together we can accomplish great things.

There is a way for you to make a real difference and it starts by contacting the Sandpoint Backpack Program at the Bonner Community Food Bank. It

takes 30 people 15 minutes a week to fill 150 backpacks and only $5.00 per backpack.

Fly fishing is a special approach to fishing. It is different from bait-casting or spin-casting because it uses a weighted line to carry the nearly weightless bait forward when casting. Tradi-tional fishing tackle is designed to have a nearly weightless line

carried by weighted bait on the end. Because of this important differ-ence, fly fishing has its own gear, equipment and terminology.

The sport of fly fishing also requires some different techniques than traditional fishing. Traditional fishing may involve casting a baited hook and waiting for a fish to bite or casting and retrieving a baited hook. However, fly fishing involves casting repeatedly with brief pauses to allow the fly to float in the current.

Fly fishing rods are different than traditional fishing rods in several ways. Fly fishing rods are longer than most fishing rods with their length frequently between six and nine feet. Some fly fishing rods are even longer than nine feet, particularly those rods designed for salmon or steelhead fishing.

Fly fishing reels vary from traditional fishing reels as well. Fly fishing actually does not require much use of the reel. Early fly fishing reels were little more than storage space for the line. Fish are not reeled in when caught; rather, the angler strips line with his or her free hand. Many fly reels still are very primitive with designs very similar to those used in the 19th century.

Fly fishing line is quite different from traditional fishing line. While traditional fishing line is made of a clear, monofilament material, fly fishing line is comparatively heavy and translucent. Fly fishing line may be designed to float or to sink depending on the style of fishing it is intended for; the line also may be tapered or level, again depending on the type of fishing that is planned and the preference of the angler. Fly fishing line is available in different weights. Heavier line can be cast further and has greater wind-resistance than lighter line. How-ever, a lighter line may provide for more precise casting by an experi-enced angler. Fly fishing line is normally around 90 feet long but may be attached to a backer to lengthen the overall line available for fish that like to fight.

A leader is attached to the end of the fly fishing line. The fly is tied to the end of the leader. The leader is a clear, monofilament line nor-mally between six and fifteen feet in length. The leader is tapered to a narrower diameter an the end of the line.

Fly fishing is also special because of the variety of fishing opportuni-ties it provides. Fly fishing techniques can be used on streams, rivers, ponds and lakes. Fly fishing works in salt water and fresh water, cold water and warm water. Fly fishing can open up many opportunities to fish new waters because the techniques and equipment are so adapt-able.

There is an interesting history of fly fishing that extends back at least to the second century. Macedonian fishermen successfully used ar-tificial flies on six-foot poles to catch fish with. Fly fishing popularity increased in 19th century England and Scotland before catching on in the United States.

Fly fishing is a historically interesting, challenging approach to fish-ing. Fly fishing offers many opportunities and variations to anglers. This sport also includes a nostalgic element that may not be found with other fishing styles.

When speaking about fitness and healthy living, most men usually think of the stereotyped image of a guy eating a balanced diet, going to the gym regularly and engaging into sports activities. All

right, if you want to be different, you’ll probably choose yoga, ballroom dancing, carpentry or even pottery as your means to exercise, relieve stress and fight boredom. But you’ll probably do a lot of sneaking when you want to do some unique stuff. Yet the truth is that male health is not only limited to diet or doing exercises or sports. For, there are other aspects of a man’s life that directly or indirectly influence his health. No wonder fitness and healthy living is a must for every man.

If you’re a father, you may be wondering how that role affects your over all fitness and healthy living. Of course, expecting and having your first-born child is a mixture of excitement, happiness and worry. Yet as the number of your kids increase and you start to face the tough challenges of parenting, you’ll probably give a more serious thought on your role as a dad. You’ll have to quickly master multitasking as you change diapers, feed your kids, watch them as they run around the house or reprimand them when they get excessively naughty. Generally, fatherhood creates positive changes to the entire male health. This is true compared to men who aren’t married or who don’t have kids yet. Moreover, their desire to watch and be with their children as they grow will inspire them to maintain their health and live longer. Hence, they’ll find more reasons to eat healthy foods, exercise regularly, drive carefully and visit their physician regularly. Of course, the joy of men is even doubled or tripled when they start to have grandchildren. Things keep on getting better as their family grows. It goes without saying that fitness and healthy living is still maintained when a man becomes a father.

St. Patrick’s Day is a holiday which celebrates Saint Patrick. Saint Patrick was one of the patron saints of Ireland credited with spreading the Catholic religion to many areas of Ireland. St. Patrick’s Day takes place

on the 17th day of March each year, which is the day which Saint Patrick died.

St. Patrick’s Day is a national holiday in Ireland with many businesses being closed on the day. In other parts of the world, especially the US and Canada, it is widely celebrated but is not an official government holiday.

St. Patrick’s Day is a holy day of obligation for Roman Catholics in Ireland. Interestingly enough, occasionally the church authorities move the date of the holiday because of its clash with other holy days. In 2008 this is the case, and it shall be moved to March 15th to avoid Holy Monday.

Catholics around the world will start off their St. Patrick’s Day with a mass service which is held to signify the holiday.

Here in the United States, St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated by everyone being of Irish decent for the day. The day has become more of a secular holiday than one of religion. Here in the United States St. Patrick’s Day has taken on more of a meaning of celebrating the beginning of spring. This goes along with the tradition of wearing green on the day, because green is both the color of Ireland as well as the color which signifies life and growth. It is said that you will be lucky for the coming spring if you wear green on the holiday.

Amazingly, St. Patrick’s Day began being celebrated here in the United States with a parade in Queens New York in 1737, well before the Revolutionary War. Since that day, parades are a very popular way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day.

Many people wear a shamrock on the holiday to signify good luck. However, the roots of this tradition, it is said, come from St. Patrick using a shamrock to explain to the pagans the concept of the Holy Trinity. In the Catholic Religion, the Holy Trinity is the Father, Son and Holy Ghost, which Christians know all stem from the same God. The three leaves of the shamrock all connected to the same stem were used to explain this concept to the pagans. If you are

wearing a shamrock on St. Patrick’s Day, it means that you can claim good luck or blessings on that day and for the rest of the year.

In addition to the shamrock, many people believe that the cute little fictitious Leprechaun character can bring you good luck. For this reason many people wear leprechaun pins and other memorabilia on St. Patrick’s Day as well as a shamrock.

One of the fun and very popular traditions which goes along with St. Patrick’s Day is the consumption of green ale. Many bars and pubs add green food coloring to their beer on the holiday to serve to their customers. In addition to the green ale, many people also indulge in Irish Cream and Irish Whisky on the day as well. For the kids, a nice green lemonade or 7UP make great non-alcoholic alternatives.

The tradition of St. Patrick’s Day began hundreds of years ago when a boy in Roman England was captured and taken to Ireland as a captive where he found God. It is said that St. Patrick could hear from

the angels and that he had raised people from the dead. He was a very active missionary throughout Ireland for 30 years, and that is why he is called the patron saint of Ireland. There have been many legends attached to this saint and they have lasted throughout the centuries. This holiday began as a Holy Day in the Catholic Church, but over the years this religious Catholic saint’s day has turned into a more secular celebration of the upcoming new spring.

Here are a Few Facts for St. Patrick’s Day:

1. March 17th, the day of celebration, is the day of Patrick’s death.

2. St. Patrick, the patron saint of the Irish, was not from Ireland.

3. Patrick was an old time missionary in Ireland during the 4th century.

4. St. Patrick brought many people to conversion and into the Christian religion.

5. The Shamrock, symbol of St. Patrick’s Day, was a plant with three leaves that Patrick used to demonstrate to the pagans the trinity of God – Father, Son and Holy Ghost.

6. Maewyn is the name St. Patrick was born with. His name was changed by the Bishop in a monastery in France, after he escaped his

captivity. He was not religious at all when he was a child.7. The first St. Paddy’s day parade in America was in 1737,

40 years before the Revolutionary War.8. The first day of spring is March 21st and this could be the

reason St. Patrick’s Day celebrations have caught on so big.

9. Everyone turns Irish for a day – just wear green, the sign of life.

10. Irish dishes include corned beef and cabbage, Irish stew, Irish cream pie, Irish soda bread, scones, Irish cheese bread and all of these would be a good choice on St. Patrick’s Day.

There are many traditions and legends that have been passed down through the generations, so even the barest of facts have gotten confused. It is not even certain exactly when Patrick was born, the actual date varies about 30 years in early 300 AD but the day of his death is certain, March 17, and that is

the important day.

Winter Camping By TentTIPS FOR CAMPING IN THE COLD

Winter time can be a fun and challenging time for the camping enthusiast. Winter camping provides new experiences and new challenges that you will grow to love. A couple ways to

experience camping in the winter is to pack all your warmest down gear, a quality tent and plenty of camping food.

If you are planning to hike into a remote area in the winter then you may enjoy snow shoeing to your camping destination. This provides you with a larger foot surface area to allow for easy walking on top of the snow. Another option is cross-country skiing to your favorite camping spot. This is a favorite of many camping aficionados.

If camping in the winter opposed to camping in the spring, summer or early fall you may see animals with slightly different coats. They will have their winter fur. That way by camping in the winter as well as camping during other seasons you can go to the same spot and the scenery will have changed. Not only will the leafy trees be stripped of all their leaves, but you will see birds that thrive in your camping area during the colder winter months.

To make winter camping more fun you will need to make sure you are able to stay warm. To stay warm while camping in the winter you will want to bring a warm coat, thermal underwear and wool socks and gloves. It is also a good idea to bring a stocking hat and hand warmers in your camping gear. Inside your tent you can set up a kerosene heater in the middle far away from anything that could ignite. There are also many other types of camping heaters that your camping retailer will

be able to tell you about. Sleeping bags for your camping trip are rated for temperature so make sure you bring a sleeping bag that is rated for the temperatures you will experience on your camping adventures.

When you first get up in the morning you may want to pull your clothing into your sleeping bag in order to warm them just a bit before putting them on. Most tents for camping are well ventilated and do not hold in heat for very long. To make your tent hold in the heat a bit longer, you may wish to throw an extra tarp over it and fasten it down with tent pegs designed for camping.

You will find that fewer people end up camping in the winter, so you will most likely find your favorite camping location not only available but also very peaceful and quiet! So if you like camping in peace and quiet with not a lot of other

camping enthusiasts coming out to your favorite spots, then choosing to set up your camping area in the winter will work perfect for you. Rocky Mountain Elk FoundationPROTECTING AND ENHANCING CRITICAL ELK HABITAT

If you enjoy wildlife and wild places, you’ll love what the Elk Foundation has accomplished in Idaho. Local banquets provide the majority of Elk Foundation dollars, which RMEF is able to leverage by a lofty 9 to 1 ratio

through matching partner funds. That kind of money makes amazing things possible: to date, Idaho RMEF fundraisers have protected and enhanced more than 383,000 acres of the state’s critical elk habitat. The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation has upwards 180,000 members wide and growing. But 180,000 members is barely 10% of the active elk hunters in North America.

Since RMEF believes everyone should have the opportunity to hunt, fish, or learn outdoor skills, Idaho chapters also fund and help orchestrate conservation and hunting heritage activities including: S.A.F.E. (Shooting Access for Everyone) Challenge events, 4-H shooting sports, Woman in the Outdoors, Idaho’s Sportsman’s Caucus and National Archery in the Schools programs.

This year’s Fundraiser is on the Saturday, April 21st, at the Bonner County Fairgrounds. Doors open at 4pm. During the high energy, social hour you’ll enjoy drawings, raffles, games, drinks and a silent auction. The prizes include jewelry, furniture, rifles, guns and more. Dinner and live auction will follow. If you’re not able to attend consider passing this on to a fellow conservationist.

In Recent news, RMEF helped to facilitate the Hope/Sagle land swap, bringing 922 acres of private land owned by Stimson Lumber Company into public ownership and raises the possibility of constructing a new trailhead for the Beetop-Roundtop Trail No. 120, one of the most scenic trails in northern Idaho. The exchange of land acquisition of low elevation winter elk habitat, elk travel corridors, elk calving grounds, grizzly bear and cutthroat habitat. “This

land exchange is culmination of a long partnership with RMEF. The Bonner County Sportsmen and Idaho Fish & Game have also been very supportive of the project,” said Dick Kramer, Ranger for Sandpoint District.

In 2012 RMEF is stepping up its advocacy of predator management and control efforts. Heavily involved

in wolf issues, RMEF continues to rally members educate hunters and the public, fight animal rights lawsuits with congress, legislatures and state and federal wildlife agencies. RMEF is celebrating the past, present and future of hunters in conservation. Early leaders like Theodore Roosevelt shaped a set of ideals now known as north American model of wildlife conservation. They declared the wildlife belong to all of us. That every citizen to hunt is entitled to hunt and fish. Jackson Russo, a 9th grader at Sandpoint High School plays football and baseball while maintaining good grades. “I love both sports and I’m excited for each season to begin each year.” Reflecting on his many practices over the years, Jackson says the worst practice he ever had was on “commitment

day in eighth grade football where we had to run and do other various exercises for the majority of practice.” With plans to go to college somewhere in California or possibly on the east coast Jackson is focusing on getting into the medical field, specifically sports medicine. “My goal is to be a sports physician when I get out of college.” His favorite food is anything Italian and Jackson’s favorite teacher is his world history teacher Mr. Omodt, “because he is funny and has a laid back personality.” Caroline Suppiger, an 8th grader at Sandpoint Middle School has always stayed active in many different sports over the years. At just two years old she started skiing and by age 5, Caroline joined the Schweitzer Alpine Racing School (SARS). Skiing has become one of her passions as she competes locally and in other states on a regular basis. In addition to skiing Caroline plays basketball, soccer, track and tennis.

The worst practice she has ever experienced was when “I was 10 years old and training at Schweitzer. My coach crashed and got knocked out and severely hurt his shoulder. I was the oldest athlete of the group, so I took responsibility to call 911 and keep all of the younger athletes calm, even though I was freaking out inside. I stayed with my coach until the ski patrol came.” Her plan for the future is to work with less fortunate children. “I have always loved children and I would like to help others reach their dreams too.”

Two Bulldogs Named All-LeagueOLIN AND KIRSCHER NAMED TO THE 4A ALL-INLAND EMPIRE LEAGUE

Senior Maggie Kirscher and sophomore Hailey Olin were named to the 4A All-Inland Empire League girls basketball team, as voted on by

the league’s coaches. Both Kirscher and Olin had outstanding seasons as reflected by their selection.

Senior Maggie Kirscher, described as the teams leader, led the league in scoring by averaging 15 points per game including a career high 36 points versus Timberlake this year. Kirscher scored 15 or more points in 14 games and averaged six rebounds per game. This is Kirscher’s 3rd consecutive selection to the 4A All-Inland Empire League girls basketball team.

Sophomore, Hailey Olin can be described as an ultimate competitor and averaged 11 points per game having scored 10 or more 12 times. Olin led the Bulldog’s in assists and steals while averaging 6 rebounds a game. This is Olin’s second consecutive selection to the 4A All-Inland Empire League girls basketball team.

Sandpoint’s Boy’s Wrestling Team Makes Some Noise at State!

Despite only sending eight wrestlers to state, four Bulldogs stepped onto the podium to receive their medals. Returning zero state placers from the previous year, the bulldogs still managed to finish 11th overall three places above their rival Hawks. Lakeland finished 100 points ahead of Sandpoint in Districts and sent seventeen wrestlers to State but still couldn’t keep pace with the fierce bulldog competitors.

Bulldog “Top Dawgs” were Peyton Dillon placed 3rd at 120 ILB, Matt Lockey placed 4th at 220 ILB, Justin Pepperdine placed 5th at 185 ILB and Adam Weindl placed 6th at 170 ILB.

Dogs, like children, are part of the family. But no matter what the dog’s temperament, families with young children should take some important safety precautions. For the children’s safety and the dog’s,

it’s crucial that they learn how to play nicely with each other. Here are some suggestions:

• Choose the Right Breed and Personality. Generally the large breeds - labradors, golden retrievers and standard poodles - are tolerant of kids. But each dog is an individual, so ask the breeder or rescue shelter about the dog’s personality before you purchase or adopt.

• Teach the Kids Good Manners. They should never disturb the dog while it’s eating, taking a nap or playing with its favorite toy.

• Keep your Pet Calm. Some dogs get very excited and agitated when confronted by lots of kids. And older dogs can be frightened by the high-pitched sounds and quick motions of children playing.

• Keep an Eye on Things. Young children and dogs should always be supervised when together. And when your baby starts crawling, keep the dog by your side until it gets used to seeing a tiny human speeding across the floor.

• Demonstrate Respect. Children should learn which parts of the dog’s body they can touch and pet and how to touch gently. For instance, your dog may love belly rubs and having its head stroked but resent having its feet or tail touched.
