A Word About Our Dean... Dear Cathedral Family, As you all know by now, our beloved Dean, The Very Rev. Harry E. Krauss, has undergone surgery and is currently recuperating at home. Several of the staff and Chapter have been out to see him, and he is getting better all the time. Dean Krauss is very appreciative of all the cards, prayers and help that he has received in these past weeks, and will look forward to seeing you all soon, as he continues to improve. As many of you are aware, the Dean’s mother, Mrs. Josephine Krauss went on to the next Chapter of Life in February. As soon as the weather clears and he is able, Dean Krauss will have a burial service for her. We will let you know as details become available. As we begin the observance of a holy Lent, let us keep Dean Krauss and his mother, Mrs. Josephine Krauss in our prayers and in our hearts. You will find a number of opportunities at the Cathedral in this issue of The Record, which will give us all the chance to engage in community and to prepare for the coming of our resurrected Lord. May God bless us all as begin our Lenten walk.
Precious in the eyes of the Lord is the death of His saints.

From The Deacon’s Bench
Dear Friends in Christ, Lent has begun and we are very fortunate here at the Cathedral of Saint John, to have a number of opportunities to engage in activities and services. At the same time, we can think about how we can help others less fortunate than ourselves, especially at this time of year. Please remember that the Food Pantry is always in need of donations of non-perishable food items and that volunteers are always needed and welcomed at the Meal Site, to assist with the needs of our guests. We have been very fortunate to have had the Rt. Rev. David Joslin, Assisting Bishop, here at the Cathedral of Saint John while both The Dean and Bishop Wolf has been recuperating from surgeries. Bishop Joslin has been a welcome addition, and we are so happy to have him with us. Also, is has been wonderful to have Rev. Larry Bradner with us for the mid-week services and also for other services that have happened. The Lenten series will begin on Thursday, March 24, with a simple supper at 6 PM followed by a film and discussion. Our discussions will focus on the film, “From Jesus to Christ,” a PBS documentary film, which traces the development of early Christianity, from the birth of Jesus to the reign of Constantine. If this is sounding a bit familiar, it should because Dean Krauss’ Sunday morning Adult Study group has been all about the Early Church this term, and this series will compliment that class time very well. Please plan to come to the Thursday Lenten study, and if you are able, sign up on the sheet in Synod Hall to help make a simple supper for the group on one of the class nights. Finally, I wanted to mention that the dinner that was being planned for March 17 has been cancelled. Unfortunately, it did not come together as planned, but special thanks to Donald Blaise for his efforts in trying to present this opportunity. Lenten Series to Begin March 24, 2011 at 6 PM Beginning on Thursday evening, March 24 and continuing on March 31, April 7 and April 14, at 6 PM, the Lenten Series will showcase a PBS Frontline documentary film, entitled “From Jesus to Christ,” which explores the life of Jesus, bringing new evidence found in the archeological records as we look at the development of Christianity from Jesus’ birth to Constantine. The documentary will be shown in four sections, one each night, with a discussion to follow. The evenings will begin with a simple supper. A sign-up sheet is available in Synod Hall for those who would like to help with meals.
Please remember to turn your clocks ahead 1 hour
on Saturday night, March 12, as Daylight Savings Time begins.

3rd Annual Crafting & Art Festival The Cathedral of Saint John

January 7, 2011 Dear Artisans, Yes, we are having our Annual Crafting and Art Festival on Saturday, October 1, 2011. The hours are, 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The Show will be a juried and will benefit the Cathedral’s Restoration Fund. The vendor table fee is $35.00 as you will see below. The fee provides you with an 8’x10’ space. Morning refreshments and lunch will be provided for vendors. location of the Cathedral is perfect for this event, being minutes from Downtown Providence, as well as directly accessible from Interstate 95 and 195. There is ample street parking as vehicles are not ticketed for overtime parking on the weekends. As always, it is our hope that this will encourage many of you to join us in the Spring. The Cathedral of Saint John is currently one of The Ten Most Endangered Historical Sites of Providence Pres-ervation Society, and is in dire need of repairs and restoration. One of the ways that we intend to raise funds for the Cathedral is by offering this event and others to the community. There will be comprehensive coverage, in-cluding local as well as state wide newspapers, internet and television advertising, as well as direct mailings and community flyer drops. Please fill out the included application, and send not more than 4 pictures of items for jury. Only items from our juried decision may appear in your booth. Check-in will be on Friday evening, September 30 at 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM or on Saturday morning, October 1st , by no later than 9:00 AM. Exceptions will not be allowed. The Standing Notices
If you are interested in Baptism, Confirmation, Holy Matrimony, Burial or House Blessings, please contact Dean Krauss at 401-331-4622 as soon as possible. Instruction must be held and deadlines met for each of these rites with the exception of Burial and House Blessings. Altar Flowers We are mindful that in these strained economic times the contribution of $75.00 for Altar flowers may be to expensive. We will only have flowers on the Altar the first Sunday of each month or on special occasion such as Easter, Pentecost, and Christmas. On other Sundays we will have plants at the Altar. Also, you are more then welcome to join with others to contribute the memorials for the first Sunday of the month. For those of you who wish to have flowers on the altar to commemorate a special occasion of your own, please call Miss Tinker at least two weeks in advance to give us time to make the necessary arrangements with Jephry. The Vigil Light, Cathedral Candles, Anthems, Service Music Parishioners who wish to sponsor the Vigil Light, Cathedral candles, anthems or service music during the year, to glorify God, to remember or give thanks for someone or to celebrate a special occasion, please let us know as soon as possible. The donation for the Vigil Light and candles are $10.00. To make these arrangements, please call Miss Tinker at 331-4622 The Prayer Shawl Ministry meets on Tuesdays, at 9:30AM in the Deacon’s Office. Cathedral Food Pantry News Do you like mandarin oranges? The hungry folks who come to our Cathedral Food Pantry every week sure do! It costs about 30 dollars for 60 cans, which we buy every week. If you would like to donate the funds for the fruit, please specify it on your weekly envelope. Our clients thank you!
Shoppers are needed for the food pantry. If you are able to help us, please see or speak to Meg LoPresti 401-353-5473 or Leah Nastasi 401-949-2364. This ministry is extremely important and we are very grateful to the dedication of all of the volunteers who make it possible. Thank you and many blessings.
-Thoughts from the Senior Warden-
I love the month of March – it holds so much promise of renewal. As I look out into my back yard this morning, the contrast I see is startling. Buds are already setting onto the trees, more and more birds have taken up residence each day lately, and I hear that some of us even have crocuses peeking out. And at the same time, the lawn is still covered for the most part with several inches of snow, which has become tiresome to look at. On the other hand, that seven or eight inches of snow was three feet not very long ago, and nature has made some impressive progress in reducing it – soon the green grass will return, the buds will turn to leaves, and the birds will form their choir again. Small signs of promise and renewal are around us every day in our own individual lives and here at the Cathedral. We must recognize them and thank God for them. God’s Peace To All Leah

2011 Chapter Members
The Story of Saints Perpetua and Felicitas
In March we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day and St. Joseph’s Day
with which we are all familiar. There are two perhaps lesser
known Saints who died and were martyred on March 7, 202
AD. Perpetua and Felicitas were African women who were
forbidden by Septimus Severus to convert to Christianity.
After their baptisms they were arrested, imprisoned, and
condemned to death. They were sent to the arena in Carthage
where they were thrown to the wild beasts and died. A basilica
still stands in Carthage today to honor their names.
