ELLIJAY, Ga. — Plans are under way to create a 15-mile bicycling and walking path along old rail-road lines linking Ellijay to Blue Ridge in the North Georgia moun-tains, a project developers hope will eventually lead to a major trail connecting Tennessee to Atlanta.

Planners for the project say this could be the start of a trail similar to the Silver Comet, which runs along the western edge of metro Atlanta to the Alabama line. Plan-ners want eventually to link Cop-perhill, Tenn., to Atlanta on a trail that winds through the mountains partially in the rail beds where tracks have been abandoned and alongside some active rail lines.

Planner David Kenemer said he hopes the trail will be on a list of projects the Northwest Georgia Regional Commission sends to the state Department of Transporta-tion this month. If so, the trail could get money from a 1 percent sales tax for transportation — which vot-ers will decide on next year.

“People drive from Ellijay to bike on the Silver Comet. It would be a lot easier if they could just walk out the door to it,” said Bill Moll, chairman of Bike Walk Northwest Georgia.

Moll said he hopes a similar trail from Lyerly to Rome in Chat-tooga and Floyd counties will also be included on the commission’s list.

But Fannin County Commission

Chairman Bill Simonds said he was hesitant to support the trail’s construction during in the current economic climate.

“Taxpayers are strapped in Fan-nin County,” he said. “I’m not sure that’s very high on the priority list.”

The Silver Comet trail, which draws visitors from as far away as Canada, cost about $13.5 million and is paved for its entire length, but Kenemer said the Ellijay-Blue Ridge trail would be covered in compacted crushed rock to reduce costs. The commission could apply for grants or find other fund-ing even if the trail doesn’t make it on the state’s tax list.

“It’s a matter of time,” he said. “I think people are now seeing the benefits of these types of projects.”

Plans for Ga. trail moving forward

BIRMINGHAM — Officials are hoping to raise $17.5 million to begin construction on a park atop Red Mountain in Birmingham.

The full development of the 1,200-acre Red Mountain Park will cost $47 million, but planners want to get the park open to the public quickly by creating it in phases. The first phase will include attractions tied to an old mine and an overlook of Jones Valley.

The park would eventually have 20 miles of trails, 50 acres of meadows, a 22-acre fishing pond and historical attractions

BIRMINGHAM — A court-appointed official says Jefferson County sewer customers could face a double-digit rate increase under a recommendation he will make to a U.S. District Court judge in 60 days.

John S. Young was appointed last year to increase revenue to pay off the county’s $3.2 billion sewer debt. He said most of the county’s 126,000 residen-tial sewer customers pay a median monthly bill of $40 and could afford a hike.

County officials estimate the average monthly bill is $63.
