Another B: Vitamin B12by Jane Holloway

Vitamin B12 is one of the B complex vitamins, all of which are essential to good health. Vitamin B12 is responsible for metabolic function, building red blood cells – which carry oxygen throughout the body – and maintaining the nervous system, which controls everything from our breathing to our five senses. Vitamins fall into two general categories. The first are the ‘fat-soluble’ vitamins, A, D, E and K. These vitamins are stored in the liver so deficiencies are rare; in fact, the risk of over-supplementation far outweighs the risk of deficiency with these vitamins.

The second category, ‘water-soluble’ vitamins, comprises the B-complex vitamins and vitamin C. We must eat foods containing these vitamins regularly since they are, in general, not stored by the body. The good news about vitamin B12 however is that, unlike most other water-soluble vitamins, it is (a) not easily destroyed during food preparation, and (b) actually stored in the body in small amounts.

Vitamin B12 occurs naturally in foods from animal sources, including eggs, poultry, beef, pork, fish, shellfish and dairy products. Vegans, who do not consume animal products, can achieve adequate intake by eating vitamin B12-fortified cereals, B12-fortified vegetable ‘milks’ (soy, rice, nut, etc.), other vitamin B12-fortified foods and some nutritional yeast products. Diet is the best way to get vitamin B12 into the body, and if you consume a variety of wholesome foods, lower-than-normal levels of vitamin B12 should not be a concern. Certain medical conditions, however, can inhibit the body’s ability to use vitamin B12, and in these cases supplements are needed. Also, as mentioned above, vegans must be careful to take in adequate amounts of vitamin B12, and must make a point of consuming foods enriched with vitamin B12 or else take a supplement. Symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency vary amongst individuals depending on the cause and the severity of the deficiency as well as other factors. Some typical symptoms, however, include very pale skin, shortness of breath, fatigue, dizziness, headache, cold hands and feet, and anaemia. Fortunately, since vitamin B12 is stored to some extent in the body, extreme deficiency in developed nations is rare.

If you are concerned about your vitamin and mineral intake, consult a nutritionist or doctor for ideas on how to achieve a balanced diet. They will be able to recommend a good multivitamin and help identify any other supplements you might need.

Is it Natural?by Sarah Perry

One of the most frequently asked questions I get asked is, ‘what does this ingredient do?’ Our products are packed full of ingredients, most of which we don’t know what they are or what their purpose in the product is.

Although natural is generally good, it isn’t always best. There are a few natural ingredients widely used in the skincare and cosmetic industry that may cause skin problems.

Lanolin is one of them.

Lanolin is derived from sebum from sheep’s sweat…..mmmmmm nice!

The lanolin oil is secreted out from the sheep’s skin on to the wool, this is used as a waterproof barrier to protect the wool from the elements. Lanolin is also known as ‘wool fat’, ‘wool wax’ and ‘wool grease’. The wool is shorn and washed in hot water with a special detergent to separate the dirt, sweat and grease to leave the wax. The wax consists of esters of fatty acids and alcohols. Other uses for lanolin, other than that for the cosmetic industry, is that it is often used to lubricate equipment, machines and chains. Sailors are also said to apply lanolin to propellers to prevent barnacles from adhering.

Ok, so while the thought of rubbing sheep sebum on my skin doesn’t appeal to me, what are the reasons behind it not being so kind to my skin?

The main reason why lanolin tends to be avoided is because of its allergy causing potential; many formulations that are hypoallergenic will have ‘lanolin free’ on the front.

As lanolin acts as a natural waterproof barrier, if used as a moisturiser this may prevent oils from excreting out of the pores, potentially leading to blackheads and spots. Lanolin is definitely an ingredient to avoid if you suffer from breakouts or sensitive skin.

Stress Reduction – Part 2by Jane Holloway

First let’s recap some of the effects that stress has on our bodies.

Short-Term Effects of Stress:• Cardiovascular: circulation increases to peripheral and salivary glands• Respiratory: bronchi of lungs dilate• Skin perspires, pupils dilate and senses become more acute• Digestion is put on hold, anus and urethra lock and the body converts

glycogen to glucose• Anti-inflammatory and pain-killing hormones are released Long-Term Effects of Stress:• Every minute your body is under this state you age• Chronic inhibition of digestion, reproductive capacity, growth, tissue repair

and immunity• Irritability and fatigue• High blood pressure, ulcers, acne, amenorrhea, impotence, asthma,

eczema• Pigmentation and excess hair growth• Susceptibility to disease and chronic depression• Reliance upon stimulants

Thankfully, though, many things can be done to help reduce stress in our daily lives. Following a few of the suggestions presented below can really improve how well you are coping and take you from stressed-out to chilled-out! Anti-Stress NutrientsStress quickly depletes our bodies of certain vitamins and minerals. These are mainly vitamin B, zinc, chromium, calcium and magnesium, which are all vital to health. A good multivitamin and mineral supplement can replace the nutrients we lose through stress, thus helping to restore equilibrium to the body. DietEating well can give you the extra edge and is especially important when stressed. Taking time to eat your meals, eating regularly and choosing good, healthy foods can impact how we feel in just a few days. Keeping the fat content down to under 30% is also definitely recommended. SaltAvoiding high levels of salt in our diets can also really help, since many of us consume up to ten times more salt than we actually need. High salt levels make us feel sluggish and depressed, and increase the chances of high blood pressure and heart disease.

SugarToo much refined sugar stresses the pancreas and affects insulin levels, which can cause sugar cravings. Eating slow-releasing sugars – that is to say, complex carbohydrates – is best.

ARTICLEWellbeing

Avoid Boosting Your Stress Burden - Reducing or cutting out substances that have been proven to add to one’s stress burden, like caffeine, alcohol and cigarettes, can significantly improve energy levels. Caffeine also destroys vitamin B, causes cravings and creates ‘highs and lows’.

Exercise - Exercise is vital when under stress. It releases built-up tension, de-stresses the body and refreshes the mind. Regular exercise will also improve your sleeping habits. Time for Yourself - Making time just for yourself is an important way of helping to reduce stress, even just ten minutes a day. Sleeping - Regular, good quality sleep makes a massive impact. We all know how much better we feel after a good night’s sleep, and poor sleep soon catches up to us. What to Do to Decrease Stress

De-Stressing Massages -A de-stressing, relaxing massage is a wonderful antidote to a stressful life. It is a great way to release tension in the neck and shoulders, an area where many of us tend to hold onto our stress. Relaxation Techniques / Yoga / Meditation - There are several types of meditation that can be carried out quite easily, and they all involve quieting the mind, giving it a break from the constant chatter.

Breathing - Breathing is something that we do subconsciously, but making it conscious and really concentrating on taking deep breaths can help you focus and will calm you down. Spending a few minutes each day stretch-ing and practicing deep breathing will increase oxygen flow and promote relaxation. Nature - Appreciating nature every day will help you to feel connected to the world in a positive way. Look at a flower, listen to the birds sing, watch the sun set.... Gratitude - So many times we just concentrate on what is wrong rather than looking at what is right. Spending a few minutes just counting five to ten different things you are grateful for every day will reinforce a positive attitude about your life and lift your spirits. Be Present - So often we are just rushing around and always thinking of the next thing. Drop the kids at school, off to do the shopping, home to clean the house, we never really just enjoy the moment. So take time everyday to be completely present. It doesn’t matter what you are doing, whether talking to a friend, eating dinner or even just walking up the stairs. Laughter - Laughter strengthens your immune system, makes you feel good and has actually been shown to reduce stress. Think about funny things that have happened, read jokes, watch comedy films, even search for hilarious videos on YouTube!

Repair Broken Relationships - Problems with family and friends generate resentment and seriously deplete our energy. Forgiving, making amends and accepting people for who they are can greatly benefit your health and reduce masses of tension.

Who’s Holding You to Account?By James St Pierre

How often in life do you settle for mediocrity or even poor performance?

How often do you make excuses for a lack of taking action or simply not following through?

If you, like me, are honest then you will probably answer these questions with anywhere between ‘sometimes’ to ‘far too much’ or even ‘the majority of the time’

Why is that? Why do we fail to live up to our potential so often and live a life of mediocrity punctuated by fleeting moments of brilliance or distinction?

The simple answer in my opinion is…….things gets in the way! Or, more accurately, we let things get in the way. Or more accurately still, we see it and subconsciously or consciously think ‘that it will make a handy excuse for mediocrity and people (including myself) will let me off the hook for not doing such and such!’

Take for example the recent bout of snow we experienced in the UK. How many of us in all honesty used that as an excuse for, at worst – a week off! At best – a pretty lazy unproductive week?

I have heard numerous people say ‘I didn’t train last week because of the snow’ REALLY! Are you sure about that? Or was the snow just the natural phenomena required to form an easy, readymade excuse for laziness? After all, most of the country used it as such! Some people took the initiative and phoned me and said ‘Because of the snow and ice, it is not safe to run outside but I really want to train. Let me know when it is ok to come in and do my running on the treadmill inside’ FANTASTIC!

Other options included exercising at home (if you were really cut off by the snow) stretching, body weight exercises, pilates, exercise DVDs or any number of easy solutions. What would really help us to stay on track and achieve our potential?

The answer is someone to hold us to account, to keep us on track. To recognise when we are making excuses and effectively not let us get away with it. Not to bully us but merely to make sure we stay good to our word and most importantly start playing life at a level worthy of us.

I personally have two fantastic boxing coaches who push me far harder than I would ever push myself. A business coach who keeps me focussed towards my goals and vision. An accountability partner in Australia, who holds me to my work and life commitments. I am also a member of a regular mastermind group who meet and discuss achievements and challenges with the sole aim of progressing the combined success of the group.

All of these channels have one thing in common – they hold me to account and push me harder in all areas of life than I would push myself.

So the question today is ‘Who’s holding you to account and making sure you perform at a level you will be truly proud of?’

If the answer is no one! Fix that fast and see your effectiveness skyrocket to a whole new level!

What is Mineral Make-up? by Jane Holloway

Mineral make-up is the latest thing and it’s based on the oldest things. As an all-natural makeup, these mineral-containing make-ups are being sold as something that can actually help your skin. There are many cosmetic companies marketing mineral make-ups by different names, but all versions of mineral makeup have a common ingredient. They all contain “natural” minerals.

The idea behind “Mineral makeup” goes against the more modern use of artificially created compounds and takes its inspiration from minerals and inorganic pigments that exist in nature. Many people prefer the natural colours of the cosmetics and feel they are supporting better health by limiting their exposure to artificial chemicals which make up the ingredients of most cosmetics. These are generally compounds which the body is less likely to be allergic to and many natural minerals also behave as antioxidants. These minerals, such as mica, titanium dioxide, zinc and iron oxides, and ultramarine pigments and even calcium, can be combined to make every cosmetic from foundation to eye shadow to shimmer powder for the body.

As with any type of makeup there are some mineral make-ups that are expensive and there are some that are inexpensive. But there is no reason to feel you can’t afford mineral make-ups.

A leading cause of wrinkled skin is the heavy and constant application of makeup. After years of makeup use, your skin looses much of its natural elasticity. This is partially due to a lessening of the production of elastin but is also due to a build up of free-radical stress which is very similar to the rust build-up on a car. As human beings evolved, our cells learned to utilize many of these minerals as basic nutrients which support normal cellular function. As many things are absorbed through the skin, many people believe there is a nutritional advantage to using natural compounds as makeup as opposed to artificial chemicals which the cells do not have any use for. Already there are many creams and lotions which are fortified with vitamins and minerals for this exact reason. Instead of waiting for nutrients in our diets to travel through the bloodstream and benefit the cells of the skin, these nutrients are applied directly to the skin so the cells can use them directly.

Whether or not this is true, many feel there is certainly a benefit to not applying artificial chemicals to the skin as they will be absorbed and may enter the blood stream. This can lead to allergic effects and other forms of discomfort to the body. If you use makeup, a good choice is mineral makeup.

The benefits of mineral make-up cosmetics are advertised to be: 1. Natural look and feel 2. Lasts longer -stays on the entire day 3. Better for sensitive skin 4. Anti-inflammatory 5. No harmful ingredients

Mineral powders are inorganic and contain no moisture. This means that bacteria cannot grow and no preservatives are needed. That means no preservatives against your skin, when you use mineral makeup. The minerals in the makeup are also natural sunscreens which protect you from the harsh effects of the sun. More and more people are switching to mineral makeup, which is why many top cosmetic companies are developing entire lines of mineral makeup. They understand market demand and that means you!

“Powering the way to a brighter future” The strangest news story going around in these cash-strapped times is that the UK is experiencing something of an unseemly consumer rush on light bulbs. Yes, light bulbs of all things. The old incandescent filament-style bulbs are selling out in their hundreds, leaving shelves empty all over the country. Why? Well, it’s because they’ve been banned. The brightest 100 watt ones are going first, to be followed by all the other wattages (60 watt is my favorite, but then I’m a bit of a traditionalist) over the next three years to 2012. The ban prevents the manufacture and import of incandescent bulbs into the EU but not the sale of existing stocks.

It’s all part of moves by the European Union to protect the environment. Their new regulations have set minimum energy efficiency targets for bulbs, meaning that the old-fashioned filament sort is out, and we’re going to have the modern energy-efficient variety. The EU claims that this legislation will save the rough equivalent of the energy consumption of Romania.

There are many concerns being raised by various groups of disabled people, who say that the demise of the humble incandescent bulb will adversely affect them - from partially sighted people who rely on the brightness of 100 watt bulbs, which cannot be equaled with the energy-efficient alternatives, to those with conditions such as epilepsy, migraines and lupus, where it’s claimed that the more modern bulbs can worsen their symptoms.

At The Electrical Shop we still carry stock of most incandescent bulbs and as the major retailers have dropped them from their ranges we have easy access to the huge stock piles that were made prior to the ban. We also have alternatives to the normal energy saving fluorescent lamps which many people dis-like. These come in the form of halogen lamps being fitted in normal bulbs and are a great if not better alternative to the incandescent bulb.

The Best of British - Crab

For more information please contact Richard directly

on 01245 266612 or email info:mustardbistro.co.uk

Sponsored by:-

The Face of Chelmsford has teamed up with Richard Adams, owner of Mustard Bar and Bistro (winner of the Essex Chronicle’s 2009 Best Restaurant Newcomer Award) to provide features that showcase some of the very best British food, drink and ingredients available throughout the year! From witnessing first-hand the start of the

lambing season through to helping out with the autumn harvest, we will highlight just how abundant local food suppliers are, and how they

support our community.

For the spring I was recommended to have a crab dish that is just coming into season. Crabs first evolved in the Jurassic period and they have been caught and eaten throughout human history. They are crustaceans and notable for its sideways walk, claws and armoured shell. There are actually around 4,500 species of crab, and they range in size from very tiny at 5mm wide - the pea crab to over 2meters for the Japanese spider crab. Popular crabs are the European Brown crab, Atlantic Blue crab, Dungeness crab and Spider crabs.

Crab claws have sweet, dense white meat, which is similar to lobster, the flesh from under the hard upper shell is soft, rich and brown and very different in texture. Male crabs tend to have larger claws and therefore more white meat. The meat from crabs can be used in all sorts of dishes including sandwiches, pasta, salads... The dish prepared for me looked similar to a dressed crab. All the meat was taken from the crab (this was about a 1 kilo crab when fresh) and mixed with mackerel, capers and cream and replaced inside the crab shell and baked with a bread crumb crust on the top. Presented simply on a mixed green leaf salad and accompanied by some double fried chips and savoy cabbage. The dish was full of flavour from the combination of ingredients, delicate, light yet filling! The crab I ate was, of course, caught off the British isles and this one in particular, off the south coast. If you want to try crab at home purchasing a live crab will ensure maximum freshness. You can ask your fishmonger to kill it for you instead of the normal just dropping it into boiling water. Live or freshly killed raw crab should be cooled or refrigerated and always cooked on the day of purchase. Once cooked, crab meat will last in the fridge for 3 or 4 days and it can also be frozen. Crab meat is a good source of many trace minerals including selenium and higher levels of B vitamins, iron and zinc. To prepare a crab isn't as messy or difficult as you may think. You can cook raw crabs by simply boiling for around 20 minutes for crabs up to 1kg and then a further 10 minutes per kg after that. Allow the crab to cool and then remove the claws and the legs by just twisting. After that, knock the underside of the body onto a chopping board and push your thumbs on the crab's back to prize the body section away from the shell. Remove and discard the stomach sac, which is just behind the mouth and the soft gills. Scoop out the brown meat from inside the shell, including the crevices where the claws and legs join the body. To crack open the legs and claws you can use arolling pin or nutcracker and remove the meat using a skewer or wooden toothpick. Definitely a dish worth trying for and cooking enthusiast.

Afternoon tea is a delight that is really coming back into fashion. There’s nothing quite like a traditional English afternoon tea, with the proper vintage crockery, cutlery and it’s an English tradition that’s definitely worth doing.

After speaking with Anna-Maria from Time for Tea, we were keen to have a Vintage Tea Party and see what it was all about!

The company Time for Tea was set up to literally take you back to a more genteel era, providing everything you need from beautiful vintage tea sets, linens, fresh flowers, dainty finger sandwiches, fresh scones and delicate pastries and cakes. They completely set up your tea party, leave you to enjoy it and then return to tidy away for you after you have finished, so no washing up! Everything that is served is freshly baked using only the very best ingredients sourced, including organic and fairtrade goods where possible.

Nothing could have been simpler. The table was laid with beautiful vintage tea set’s, pretty daffodils, and a whole array of beautiful sandwiches, cakes and scones. We also had a lemon drizzle cake made for us to try which was really very good, and was presented on a beautiful cake stand. We tried the English Breakfast and the Peppermint tea. The tea bags were in little silk bags, the tea had a wonderful aroma.

They have a vast amount of vintage tea sets and will also be hiring them out for various occasions. The fine bone china is really exquisite and unfortunately seen less and less. Some of which are over 100 years old, think of all the cups of tea, all the people... if only they could talk!

The Lunch Date @ Indiana Zone

health | wellbeing | style | retail | food | living | travel | family | prosperity

Indiana Zone just opened in February 2011 - a new Indian restaurant which is situated on Baddow Road, owned by Mohibur Rahman. The whole building has been completely refurbished and the restau-rant has a stylish and modern look and feel with cream and burgundy colours. We went to have a look and a quick lunch service straight from the office!

The restaurant offers a buffet service during the day and full table service in the evening. Indiana Zone serves a selection of contemporary Asian dishes, with a particular emphasis on Indian and Bangladeshi cuisine. The lunch buffet is available 6 days a week and then it’s available all day on Sundays. This Indian restaurant is ideal for all the local office’s and shop’s as well as all the shoppers in the busy town cen-tre. There is a large selection of tasty Indian dishes at the buffet area and other items can be ordered from the menu. Every evening dining is available with the A La Cart menu.

They also have live music, with a set menu every month, the next one is on the 3rd of March, which looks to be a very popular event. The restaurant also offers a full take-away menu with their extensive range of dishes to eat in the comfort of your own home. Indiana Zone 10 Baddow RoadChelmsfordEssexCM2 0DG

About Camomile HixonCamomile Hixon is a visual artist whose canvases, many of which contain super-sized words or bold images, have evolved from her work as a musician and songwriter, in which she seeks to isolate poetry fragments in silence and without the movement of melody. The shimmering quality of the glitter breathes life into the works and allows for a deeper resonance with subtle meanings and interpretations.

Hixon earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with a concentration in film from Hofstra University and moved to Hollywood to work for Sanford Pillsbury Productions (Desperately Seeking Susan). She was Creative Executive during the time the company was hired by Dreamworks in 1995. After a few years, she left the film industry to concentrate on a professional music career: composing, singing and guitar. She studied the devotional music of North India with the renowned Indian vocalist, Mala Ganguly, including playing the harmonium and singing in Sanskrit and Bengali. Upon moving to New York City, Camomile trained under Ms. Edna Lind, Soprano with the Metropolitan Opera.

Recently, Camomile recorded a full-length album of alternative pop music entitled Black Horses. This record was recently releasted on Astraea Records. Creativity takes many forms for Hixon, who believes that each manifestation sheds additional light on the other facets of her work.

After an exhibition at Tria Gallery in Chelsea, New York, in the spring of 2010, Hixon's work was in high demand and was featured in several contemporary art fairs including ArtHamptons and the FIGMENT arts festival on Governor's Island in Manhattan, where she created an interactive glitter beach with 250 pounds of glitter. One of her pieces was selected as feature artwork for the upcoming season of the hit Bravo television show, 9 By Design. Recently, Hixon also created a life-sized glitter zebra mascot for the Children’s Museum of Art in Soho. In December, Hixon had a very successful solo exhibition at the Diane Birdsall Gallery in Old Lyme, Connecticut.

The Missing Unicorn hotline has received more than 9,000 calls, and www.missingunicorn.com has been visited by unicorn lovers from all 50 states and 103 countries. Hixon is developing a documentary film about the Missing Unicorn Phenomenon, which has received extensive media attention.

HOW DO YOU LIKE TO HOLIDAY?I was once told all advice is bad advice and good advice is worse. I don’t have a clue what they meant, but I suppose it’s to do with not trusting your gut instinct and trusting a decision of someone else who should know better but doesn’t. That happens in all areas of life, but especially in the travel industry. Just because 99% of travellers like doing a certain activity in a certain country, doesn’t mean you will. But tour operators and travel ‘experts’ speak with such authority and sincerity, it’s easy to double take your first instinct and go with what is being offered rather than digging further and seeking out something that is more fit for your purpose. Perhaps it’s for this reason many tour operators have decided to offer a bespoke, tailor made service to regular customers who want something more personalized.

I road tested three bespoke companies to see what their service offered. Some offered purely bespoke, others are tour operators that offer it as an option to their regular set itineraries. I wanted to go to Thailand for a week in October, budget of £1500 per person everything included. Ideally a spa, only had a budget of a certain level and wanted to have some sight seeing but only really for a day. It was a chill holiday more than anything. And, wanted luxury, which you can, much more cheaply in the Far East than anywhere else in the world.

My first stop was Travelbag (www.travelbag.co.uk). I gave them my details and within a day they came back to me with options of resorts and a day of activities that was well thought out. Within budget they were able to get a deal better than I would have been able to if I’d contacted the resort direct. They also didn’t do that irritating thing that estate agents do, offering options that are way out of the budget and make you feel inferior and spend more than you should.

Next, I went to Tailormade Explore (www.tailormadeexplore.co.uk) I gave them the same brief, and was given a variety of resorts, different ones but within my budget, and unsurprisingly a vast range of more adventurous excursions that I hadn’t had before. The expert was well informed, asked me lots of specifics which led to them offering more slightly different advice and accommodation and were giving me information about the place I didn’t know and changed my initially ideas about what to do and see in the time and region available.

Lastly, I visited Destinology (www.destinology.co.uk). Again they were able to respond quickly to my request, and offered other ideas and options I had not considered before, including information about possible weather conditions and time it would take to take certain treks at that time of year, which I should consider.I was impressed with all of them, and there were no particular downsides to my experiences with each company, although it was frustrating sometimes to need to speak to not one, but three different people during the course of the week from each company, so that I got confused about which itinerary I was talking. If I have Ralph at the start of the conversation, I still want Ralph up until and including when I book the holiday and everything is finalized. I know this may be difficult and possibly impractical, but for bespoke service, this is what customers expect – one to one service. Yes, these companies will charge a fee (ask them up front if and how they do this)

Think of it as in when you look for something ‘for best’. If it’s the one holiday you have a year or even if it’s not, nothing else will do.

Each Month Focus on a Different Way to Cut Carbon

January: LightingBring your costs and carbon from lighting down to size and get on your way to 10% with our low-carbon lighting tips. But this won’t be the standard ‘change your bulbs’ nag. From dimmer switches to halogen spotlights, we’ll show you how to boldly go where no energy-saving bulbs have gone before. Hold tight.

February: InsulatingWe all want a warm, comfortable home, and paying extra to heat the world outside is no-one’s idea of a good time. As luck would have it, the best ways to cut your carbon at home are also the best ways to banish the chills. February is insulation month.

March: PlantingSpring has sprung, and it’s the perfect time to get outside and try growing your own fruit and veg.

April: TravellingEveryone’s booking their summer break this month. Avoid airport misery with a climate-friendly getaway.

May: ShoppingHit the high street without hitting the climate - in May the focus is on carbon-conscious consuming.

June: SavingIn June, we’ll be hunting down (and ruthlessly eliminating) wasted energy around the house. The writing’s on the wall for electricity-hogging appliances and gas-guzzling boilers.

July: EatingIn July, we’re taking carbon off the menu with local, seasonal deliciousness. If you did any planting back in March, now’s the time to enjoy the fruit (and veg) of your labour.

August: PlayingWhether you’re hitting the festivals or walking the hills, August is the month to get outdoors for a climate-friendly summer.

Being acknowledged for who I am Makes such a Difference

by Phil Evans

A teacher in New York decided to honor each of her seniors in high school by telling them the difference they each made. She called each student to the front of the class, one at a time.

First she told each of them how they had made a difference to her and the class. Then she presented each of them with a blue ribbon imprinted with gold letters, which read, “Who I Am Makes a Differ-ence.”

Afterwards the teacher decided to do a class project to see what kind of impact recognition would have on a community. She gave each of the students three more ribbons and instructed them to go out and spread this acknowledgment ceremony. Then they were to follow up on the results, see who honoured whom and report back to the class in about a week.

One of the boys in the class went to a junior executive in a nearby company and honoured him for helping him with his career planning. He gave him a blue ribbon and put it on his shirt. Then he gave him two extra ribbons and said, “We’re doing a class project on recognition, and we’d like you to go out find somebody to honour, give them a blue ribbon, then give them the extra blue ribbon so they can acknowledge a third person to keep this acknowledgment ceremony going. Then please report back to me and tell me what happened.”

Later that day the junior executive went in to see his boss, who had been noted, by the way, as being kind of a grouchy fellow. He sat his boss down and he told him that he deeply admired him for being a creative genius. The boss seemed very surprised.

The junior executive asked him if he would accept the gift of the blue ribbon and would he give him permission to put it on him. His surprised boss said, “Well, sure.” The junior executive took the blue ribbon and placed it right on his boss’s jacket above his heart. As he gave him the last extra ribbon, he said, “Would you do me a favour? Would you take this extra ribbon and pass it on by honouring somebody else? The young boy who first gave me the ribbons is doing a project in school and we want to keep this recognition ceremony going and find out how it affects people.”

That night the boss came home to his 14-year-old son and sat him down. He said, “The most incredible thing happened to me today. I was in my office and one of the junior executives came in and told me he admired me and gave me a blue ribbon for being a creative genius. Imagine. He thinks I’m a creative genius. Then he put this blue ribbon that says: “Who I Am Makes a Difference,” on my jacket above my heart. He gave me an extra ribbon and asked me to find somebody else to honour. As I was driving home tonight, I started thinking about whom I would honour with this ribbon and I thought about you. I want to honour you. My days are really hectic and when I come home I don’t pay a lot of attention to you. Sometimes I scream at you for not getting good enough grades in school and for your bedroom being a mess, but somehow tonight, I just wanted to sit here and, well, just let you know that you do make a difference to me. Besides your mother, you are the most important person in my life. You’re a great kid and I love you!”

The startled boy started to sob and sob, and he couldn't stop crying. His whole body shook. He looked up at his father and said through his tears, "Dad, earlier tonight I sat in my room and wrote a letter to you and Mom explaining why I had killed myself and asking you to forgive me. I was going to commit suicide tonight after you were asleep. I just didn't think that you cared at all. The letter is upstairs. I don't think I need it after all."

His father walked upstairs and found a heartfelt letter full of anguish and pain. The envelope was addressed, "Mom and Dad! ."

The boss went back to work a changed man. He was no longer a grouch but made sure to let all his employees know that they made a difference. The junior executive helped several other young people with career planning and never forgot to let them know that they made a difference in his life ... one being the boss's son.

And the young boy and his classmates learned a valuable lesson. Who you are DOES make a difference!

You never know what kind of difference a little encouragement can make to a person.

Behind the Scenes Little Pigletswith Jane Holloway

written by Sarah Perry

For this issue we were back to visit Lou of Totham bangers. Lou helped Jane make sausages, last year which was really fun and the sausages were very tasty! She was kind enough to introduce us to their latest additions….baby piglets!

They have two female pigs who each have recently had piglets. One set are 1 month old and the new piglets are just 3 days old. Our editor Jane Holloway felt particularly loving toward the cute runt of the litter whom she named Pigstickle. The feisty new additions bounce around merrily with their brothers and sisters and a few even managed to escape outside of their fence…cheeky piglets!

These pigs are classed as outdoor reared, which means they predominantly live outside and are free to roam as they please and are not cooped up, with no space to move. And not only do these pigs get to play around outside in the mud all day they even eat organic produce donated by a local farm shop... that’s a nice life!

Currently 25-30% of the pork we eat comes from pigs which are outdoor reared, so look at the labels when your in the shops and choose carefully, happy pigs, mean tasty food.

Thanks for having us guys!

The Apprenticeby Jane Holloway

After our feature last year with DB Training I decided to take on an apprentice and see for myself the ben-efits. Working with young people on an apprenticeship scheme is rewarding for you as a business owner as well as the apprentice. Whether you are looking to start an apprenticeship or you’re looking to recruit one, read on to find out what it’s all about!

About DB TrainingThe management team of DB Training are a dynamic and inspirational group of individuals within further education. This blend of work based learning and unique practical training was a concept inspired by the Managing Director, John Baker. DB Training is setting the standards for a new generation of training provid-ers. Its innovative and unique delivery methods established by its management team, focus entirely on the learners experience and the relevancy to their career.

What is an Apprenticeship? Apprenticeships have been around for many years and they offer people the chance to gain invaluable experi-ence. DB Training gives young people the unique opportunity to do an apprenticeship in a variety of careers whilst being employed and receiving an income. The system is designed to give the apprentice the necessary tools and experience for long-term employment. Combining a formal qualification with real work experience.

What are the benefits of an Apprenticeship? There are many benefits to doing an Apprenticeship including the fact that you can earn while you learn. You will be able to earn £2.50 an hour as a training allowance whilst having the responsibility of being an employee. You are constantly learning in real work environment so that you come out with not only qualifica-tions, but skills and real work experience.

Who will help me? DB Training assign you a mentor whose job it is to ensure that your training fits your personal requirements, offers the skills needed for your job and satisfies national standards. They will also help you through any chal-lenging times during your apprenticeship regardless whether these are professional or personal.

What do I do after?Throughout the Apprenticeship the focus is on training relevant skills that your employers requires, this enables you to expand the choices and options within your chosen career. As a result of completing your Apprenticeship you can continue working with your employer, improve promotional opportunities or go on to higher education in a College or University.

ArticleProsperity

www.thefaceofchelmsford.com 37

What makes up an Apprenticeship? • All Apprenticeships include the following elements:

• An appropriate work-based qualification such as a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) at either Level 2 or Level 3;

• Key Skills qualifications, e.g. application of number and communication.

• A technical qualification such as a City & Guilds Diploma or Certificate (relevant to the specific Apprenticeship);

• Employee Rights & Responsibilities (ERR)

• Other qualifications or requirements as specified by the particular occupation.

Looking for an Apprentice...

Apprentice Recruitment If you are looking to take on an apprentice then look no further. DB Training sources and recruits Apprentices for all kinds of businesses. You are designated an Account Manager from within their Business Development Team who starts the process by meeting with you to clearly define your needs, whether that is an immediate position or one you are looking to fill over the next 6-12 months.

All apprentices will have already completed a Level 2 NVQ in the chosen field and been vetted for suitability of employment. Then they will look at the specific skills required for each of the position/s you want filled either on a part-time or full-time basis. This ensures that the particular individual has the knowledge and skills to be a viable employee from day one.

Advantages The unique advantage is that you as an employer now have access to pre-trained and vetted recruits that you feel will add long term value to your organisation. One of the main advantages is that DB Training assumes the responsibility for the individuals training and you get access to a wealth of new talent with no recruitment fees.

Did You Know?An espresso has less caffeine than a cup of coffee

A cup of drip brewed coffee has about 115mg of caffeine, an espresso (and percolated coffee) about 80mg, while instant coffee has about 65mg of caffeine. Decaffeinated coffee is not totally caffeine free, containing about 3mg of caffeine. A 8oz can of Coca-Cola has about 23mg of caffeine, Pepsi Cola 25mg, Mountain Dew 36mg.
