Artist Series opens Tuesday with “A Manhattan Cabaret”

Chipola Theatre to host Improv WorkshopSammy Wegent, a professional come-

dian, actor and improv performer will presentan improvisation workshop for ChipolaCollege theater students Tuesday, Sept. 14,at 1 p.m., in the Chipola Theater. The work-shop was originally scheduled for Sept. 7.

Wegent has been teaching, perform-ing, and directing improvisation profession-ally for seven years. He holds an M.F.A. inActing from Catholic University in Wash-ington D.C. and a B.F.A in Theatre fromShorter College. Wegent has taught impro-visation and acting at numerous universi-ties, comedy festivals, and theatre confer-ences. He is the creator and Executive Pro-

ducer of the Gulf Coast Comedy Festivaland the Improv Instructor of the San Fran-cisco Comedy Festival.

A recent graduate of the San Fran-cisco Comedy College, Sammy has per-formed stand-up all over the Bay Area, in-cluding showcases at the San Jose Improv,Cobb’s Comedy Club, and Rooster T. Feath-ers Comedy Club.

Wegent is the Associate Artistic Di-rector of the Seaside Repertory Theatre inSeaside, FL, as well as the Artistic Directorof SPF 7, the 2-Time World Record Holdersfor the longest improv show by a singletroupe (35 Hour Show and 70 Hour Show).

He has performed across NorthAmerica at such venues as the St. LouisFringe Festival, The Shakespeare Theatrein Washington D.C., the Destin PunchlineComedy Club, the Gulf Coast Comedy Fes-tival, and the Toronto International ImprovFestival.

Wegent is one of the many guest art-ists Chipola theater director Charles Sirmonhopes to bring to the college this year toexpose theatre majors to various areas ofstudy in theatre arts.

Chipola College has earned a solidreputation for training students in the fieldof electronics.

The college offers a vocational cer-tificate and Associate of Science (AS) de-gree options in Electronic Engineering Tech-nology. Full-time students can complete thevocational certificate program in about 18months. The vocational program featuresopen-enrollment which allows students toenroll at any time. The Associate of Sci-ence (AS) degree option takes approxi-mately two years to complete.

Students who complete either pro-gram are prepared to work in support andmaintenance of digital and analog electron-ics systems. Chipola grads have landedjobs as electronic technicians with variouspower companies, and computer repair andmaintenance firms. Others have been em-ployed in the home security business andin the corrections field performing electronicsystems checks, electrical, fire and surveil-

lance support. Graduates also have goneon to work in microprocessor production,and in support and maintenance of largecomputer systems.

James Bailey who directs the Electron-ics programs said, "One of our new pro-grams is an AS degree in Computer Engi-neering Technology which has three spe-cialization areas: Computer Electronics, Net-works and Programming. The AS degree inTelecommunications provides the core ofthe electronics program with an additionaleight hours of specialization in telecommu-nications.

A related program is the two-year ASdegree in Network Administration. Instruc-tor Vikki Milton, a Microsoft Certified in-structor says, “The program covers systemadministration, Microsoft support operationand systems management and provides stu-dents with the technical skills necessary toinstall, configure, manage and support a net-work. The curriculum also prepares stu-dents for examinations in the following in-dustry standard certifications: MicrosoftCertified Systems Engineer (MCSE) and forthe CompTIA Network+ and A+ Certifica-tion examinations.

In addition to the Chipola programs,The University of West Florida is expectedto offer a B.S. in InformationTechnology (IT)beginning in January of 2005. The courseswill be delivered online and through inter-active television.

Chipola Electronics program earns solid reputation

Chipola College is preparing to offera 600-hour, two semester, part-time programin Industrial Pipefitting.

Chipola Dean of Workforce Develop-ment programs, Bud Riviere, says the pro-gram is expected to begin in January 2005.

The planned sequence of instructionwill focus on broad, transferable skills as-sociated with pipefitting and will demon-strate elements of the Pipefitting Tradesindustry.

Upon completion of the first 300 hoursof instruction, students may be certified asan Industrial Pipefitter Helper 1. Studentsmay be certified as an Industrial Pipefitterupon completion of the second 300 hours.The program will be offered throughChipola’s Welding Technologies Programunder the director of lead welding instruc-tor Freddie Foran. Adjunct instructor DaleMesser is planning to deliver the pipefittingprogram.
