barefoot movementChipola Artist Series goes bluegrass The Chipola Artist Series will present, “Barefoot Movement,” one of the most promising bands on the bluegrass scene, Thursday, Nov. 19, at 7 p.m., in the Center for the Arts. The music of the Nashville-based group is as down to earth as their intention for their audience: sit back, relax, take your shoes off, and stay a while. All the worries and frustrations of the world melt away as the charming four-piece acoustic band takes listeners back to a simpler place and time. Barefoot Movement presents a variety of bluegrass from emotional ballads to rip-roaring barn-burners. Audiences can expect a collection of music that offers something for everyone. Chipola to host South Ga Tech Nov. 18 The Chipola Indians host South Georgia Tech in a pre-conference game Wednesday, Nov. 18, at 7 p.m., in the Milton Johnson Center. The Indians’ record stands at 2-2 after defeating Cape Fear 90-86 on Nov. 7. Antwain Johnson led Chipola with 29 points. Cletrell Pope had 16 points. Junior Saintel and Patrick Rooks scored 14 apiece. Eric Lockett added 11. Chipola lost a close 84-78 game to IMG Academy on Nov. 6. Pope led the Indians with 16 points. Johnson scored 13. Eric Turner added 11. The Chipola Indians scored a 79-76 win over Indian River on Oct. 30. Chipola fell to Broward 89-79 on Oct. 31. The defending national champion Chipola Lady Indians defeated Georgia Highlands 88-60 on Nov. 6. The Lady Indians narrowly defeated Florida State (Jax) 59-58 on Nov. 7. Aisha Edwards led Chipola with 14. Sydnee McDonald had 12. Rosemarie Julien scored 11. Chipola trounced Pinellas County Job Corps 145-17 on Oct. 30. Chipola had 8 players in double figuresledbytransferCynthiaPetkewith25pointsand 14 rebounds. Chipola whipped Central Georgia Tech 93-48 on Oct. 31. Julien led the Lady Indians with 16 points and 6 rebounds. Petke had 13 points and 18 rebounds. The Lady Indians finished the 2015-16 campaign by capturing the NJCAA NationalChampionship. Chipola Ensembles concert is Nov. 17 The Chipola music ensembles will present, “A Fall Celebration of Music Through the Ages” on Tuesday, Nov. 17, at 7 p.m. in the Center for the Arts. The concert will feature a jazz ensemble, an antiphonal choir, vocal ensembles, and voices from throughout the community as they present a variety of music styles and eras. The Chipola Chorus will be joined by the Community Chorus featuring local voices from the area. The choral ensembles are directed by vocal instructor, Dr. Christina Villaverde-Camara, who joined the Chipola faculty this fall. Dr. Villaverde has an extensive career as a lyric soprano having performed with the Florida Grand Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Opera Birmingham and the National Opera of Costa Rica, among others. She also has served on the faculties of Florida State University and Samford University. The Rock and Jazz Ensemble will perform a variety of jazz, swing, and popular music styles. Improvisation is heavily featured and the element of uncertainty will keep the audience listening for what will happen next. The Rock and Jazz Ensemble is under the direction of Richard DelaFuente. The Chipola College ensemble presented the national anthem at the Veterans Day celebration this morning held at the Agricultural Center on Penn Avenue. They performed for a large crowd including Congresswoman Gwen Graham.

Government Contracting

Seminar set at Chipola

Chipola will offer a small business Seminar “Introduction to Federal Government Contracting,” Friday, Nov. 20, from 9 to 11:30 a.m., in Room M-108 of the Chipola Business and Technology building (M). Bob Reyes, Government Contracting Specialist, will offer valuable tips for those who would like to do business with the government. The seminar will offer strategies to grow sales by offering goods and services as a government contractor. The free seminar is sponsored by the Florida SBDC at UWF in Panama City. Jacob Reed, a teacher candidate in the Secondary Mathematics Education program at Chipola, recently attended the Florida Association of Teacher Educators conference in Gainesville. He is pictured here with Alvin Davis, 2012 Florida teacher of the year, who was one of the speakers. Reed is a senior and will be interning in a secondary mathematics classroom in the spring. He also serves as a tutor in Chipola’s ACE lab. He volunteers at Liberty County High, and provides tutoring outside the classroom in Liberty and Calhoun counties. The FATE conference provides opportunities for professional development, and for teacher candidates to collaborate with their future colleagues. The conference focused on: diversity in the classroom, structuring a flippedclassroom, incorporating Algebra Nation into the curriculum, providing support for caregiving youth, and creating confident kids in order tominimize bullying.

Chipola students enrolled in Enivronmental Science (EVR 1001) were introduced to several aspects of prescribed burning through an interactive lesson developed by Florida Caverns State Park Services Specialist Billy Bailey. Students observed the process of initiating a live fire for a controlled burn.

Chipola Athletics signing ceremony Chipola Athletics held a signing ceremony, Wednesday, Nov. 11, at noon, in the Milton Johnson Center Hospitality Room. Wednesday was National Signing Day. Chipola helps Sneads High Tech Program—

The Chipola Engineering Technology program recently donated equipment to the Sneads High School Agriculture Operations Technology program. Chipola provided oscilloscopes, related electronic trainers and curriculum. The show will be presented Thursday, Dec. 10 and Friday, Dec. 11, at 7 p.m., and Sunday, Dec. 13, at 2 p.m. Chipola’s award-winning Show Choir will perform their annual concert in a beautiful holiday setting in the Center for the Arts. CHIPOLA SSS VISITS UF —Students in the Chipola College Student Support Services (SSS) program recently toured the University of Florida. SSS provides students with the opportunity to visit multiple college campuses. In 2016, SSS students will visit Florida State University – Panama City and FAMU. In addition to campus tours, SSS provides workshops on college transfer requirements and financial aid guidelines. SSS is a TRiO program funded by the U.S. Department of Education to assist first generation and students with varying social-economic classifications succeed academically in college.
