Time for more pictures
Trees and more trees…
Up to 200 bats fit in there.
These holes are made by the spiles.
This tool is called a spile, and the sap drips through it.
Maple Tree
Bottle of sap
We are tasting little crumbs of maple sugar.
We visited a place where they turn sap into syrup. To cook the sap you need an evaporator. The evaporator evaporates all the water from the sap. The sugar shack is called Maple Cloud.
This sap has almost turned into maple syrup.
This sample was taken from the evaporator after the one to the left. As you can see, this one is darker than the other one.
The evaporator
She is pouring sap into the evaporator.
This is all the water that is evaporating from the sap.
This tool is called a ladle.
This tool is used to see how thick the syrup is.
It takes about 25-50 gallons of syrup to make a bottle.
This is Farmer Jessie.
This is Farmer Moya.
Thank you for a great field trip to the Schlitz Audubon Nature Center.
