CERTIFICATE 27000
RESOLVED That the Design Commission, having considered a proposal for the installation of
the Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony Monument by Meredith Bergmann, Literary
Walk, The Mall, Central Park, Manhattan, submitted by the Department of Parks & Recreation,
represented by exhibits 7422-A, B & D of record in this matter, hereby gives to the same
unanimous conceptual approval with the understanding that (1) the artist will (a) work on
refining the anatomy and proportions of each of the two figures, (b) restudy the gaze of the two
women, (c) simplify the pedestal design so that the surface is flush, (d) eliminate the
rectangular base or revise it to an oval to match the pedestal, and (e) integrate the bronze into
the top of the base and (2) the team will submit revised pedestal text, including the birth and
death dates for the two women and alternative quotes.
The Commission appreciates that this monument will commemorate two women who were
pioneering activists of the Woman Suffrage Movement. The Commission also acknowledges
Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony's complicated history, and that the
contributions and struggles of the many women of color who played a role in this Movement
remain overlooked.
With this in mind, the Commission gives approval conditioned upon the understanding that,
separate from the statue of Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony, the applicant will
work to identify meaningful ways to acknowledge and commemorate women of color who
played an active role in the Woman Suffrage Movement.
Conceptual approval is conditioned upon submission of this project for preliminary review and
approval before March 18, 2021.
