Students had been regularly reminded about setting goals for their learning, study and assignments and consistently working towards them. After perusing students‟ mid-semester report cards and talking with parents and students at the recent Parent/Teacher/Student Evening for Year 8, 9 and 10 students, it was very clear that the vast majority of students are being highly successful in their endeavours. We look forward to the Year 11 and 12 Parent/Teacher/Student Evening next Wednesday. Term 2 will undoubtedly be a very busy one too. The participation of students in a range of co-curricular activities on offer will assist students to develop as well rounded people. However it is also essential that students pace themselves and take time to reflect on their academic goals and ensure that they continue to work successfully towards them. One activity that involves the whole school community is the annual school musical. I wish all participants well as they enter a new path which will provide them with many wonderful experiences as they work on perfecting their performances of the Wizard of Oz. Keep shining! STUDENTS WANTING TO LEAVE EARLY DURING A SCHOOL DAY Students MUST have a note, to take to the Lower Office before school. They will be issued with a pass to then have signed by the teacher, from whose class they are leaving early. Just prior to the designated time of pick up, students then leave the class after showing their pass to the teacher, go to the Lower Office/Upper Office with the signed pass to leave and swipe out. No students are to leave classes, unless they have a pass issued to them. In a school of over 1600 students and the complexities that go with that, it is not possible unless in extreme emergencies, for students to be called from a class when a parent arrives at the school office. Thank you for your understanding in this matter. SENIOR FORMAL After much anticipation the Senior Formal will take place this Friday night 27 April at the Brisbane Convention Centre. Students need to arrive at the venue on the corner of Merivale and Glenelg Streets in South Brisbane between 6.15pm and 6.45pm. They must be seated inside by 7pm. Students have been reminded that Friday night traffic is often dreadful. Parents are invited to come to see the students in all their finery. Some parents farewell the students from home. Others take the opportunity to dress up too, have some photos taken, come to the Convention Centre stairs and watch the arrival of students, before going out to dinner themselves and collecting students between 11.30pm and 11.45pm. Enjoy the evening! Students are fully aware that if they wish to attend the Senior formal, they must be in attendance at school until 1.05pm on Friday 27 April. We hope to include a page of picture treats in the next Newsletter. QUEENSLAND CORE SKILLS TEST REPRESENTATIVES Expression of Interest – Administration of Core Skills Test The Queensland Core Skills (QCS) Test is administered each year by the Queensland Studies Authority. This test is held at designated test centres. For reasons of public accountability, security of test materials and proper conduct of the test, the Authority appoints to each test centre, members of the community who carry out certain duties on behalf of the Authority as Chief Community Representatives and Community Representatives. Chief Community Representatives and Community Representatives do NOT supervise the administration of the test. The duty of these representatives is to report to the Authority office on the conduct of the test. In 2012 the test will be conducted on Tuesday 4 September and Wednesday 5 September. Expressions of Interest are invited from members of the community who are interested in being nominated for the representative positions. Payments are made. Further information and an application package can be obtained from the school‟s Upper Office. ARTS FACULTY Dance Excursion On the evening of the Wednesday 28 March, the Senior Dance students had their first excursion to a professional dance performance at the Judith Wright Centre for Contemporary Arts. Scripsi Scriptum was created out of a cultural exchange between Expressions Dance Company (EDC) from Brisbane and Cathy Sharp Dance Ensemble (CSDE) from Basel, Switzerland. The creative process began when the ten dancers shared hand-written letters to introduce themselves. From there EDC travelled to Basel to create and perform with CSDE. Scripsi Scriptum was born and was initially performed in late 2011 in Basel, receiving a very positive response from Swiss audiences. The Year 11 and Year 12 dance students were accompanied by Mrs Sullivan and Ms Pritchard to the performance, which was to a packed house. We were allocated the second row which was very exciting and gave us a very close up and personal experience. The performance was quite conceptual and inspiring and was enjoyed by all. We hope to attend more events like this in the future.

IT NEWS Classroom Computer Presentation Console Milestone All classrooms except for the Home Economics kitchens and the Manual Arts woodwork and metalwork rooms now have presentation consoles and projectors installed in them. These projectors will assist students with oral presentations and allow greater use of multimedia technologies in classes. The newer projectors integrate electronic white board capabilities and allow the use of the existing white boards as an interactive touchscreen. A large number of staff is currently completing their “Using SMARTboards in your Classroom” training after school conducted by Emma Stone from SMARTboard. These training sessions will assist teachers in getting the most out of this valuable resource. There will also be a specialised session for Maths teachers so that they can maximise the benefits of the new interactive technology. The next stage of the project will be to update the older projectors that are becoming difficult to see due to diminishing brightness. We would like to thank our parents for their contribution to the IT general fee

that has allowed this high level of resourcing to be attained.

Associate Professor Encourages Students

A great start to the term was made when Associate Professor Brian Gabrielli graced our stage and addressed the first full school assembly. He did a wonderful job of informing students of the dangers of Queensland‟s UV rays and the measures that need to be taken to prevent skin damage which primarily occurs during the teen years. Mr Gabrielli is an enthusiast when it comes to mechanisms that regulate cell division to help find cures for cancer and is especially passionate about sun safety. He is currently doing his own independent research work through the University of Queensland‟s Diamantina Institute and is based at the Princess Alexandra Hospital. He has had the opportunity to work with many successful scientists located overseas and in Australia and has published many scientific reports used for research referencing by universities and other medical institutes. Mr Gabrielli encouraged the Mansfield community to continue wearing hats and commended students for participating in the

SPARQ-ed (Students Performing Advanced Research in Queensland Education) program offered by the Diamantina Institute. For more information about the SPARQ-ed program, please visit http://www.di.uq.edu.au/sparq-ed

P & C Meeting - Date Claimer Thursday 26 April 7.30pm in the Administration Block Common Room All are welcome to attend. Faulty Lexar Memory Sticks A number of the Lexar memory sticks purchased through Sequel Books earlier this year, have proven to be faulty. Any student with a faulty Lexar memory stick should phone Lexar directly on 02 8923 4500, between 9am to 5pm, and explain the fault. Lexar will approve their return and provide a mailing address. They will replace the drive once the faulty drive has been posted to them. The turnaround time is approximately 2 weeks. The company has emphasised that they have no facilities to retrieve lost data. Uniform Shop News Many high quality second hand scarves are available for about $7. If you ordered a pullover for the winter months, please note they have arrived, the orders have been filled and are awaiting collection. Please note the following care instructions:

To help prevent fading in Poly Cotton Knitwear the following tips are recommended.

Always turn the Jumper inside out before washing (preferably in a laundry bag) – this helps prevent rubbing and pilling.

Only wash in cold or lukewarm water.

Rinse really well, because if washing powder/liquids are not completely rinsed out „SUNBURN‟ can occur. Poly Cotton Knit „SUNBURN‟ happens when the jumper may still contain chemical residue from washing powders/liquids, and when exposed to heat/sunlight unusual fading may occur.

Powder with „Optical Brighteners‟ should be avoided.

Always dry turned inside out. Uniform Shop opening hours are Tuesday and Thursday between 7.30 - 9.15am. RAUCHLE SERVICE CLUB Coming soon… Wishart Rotary – Book Sale – Saturday and Sunday 26 and 27 May All members of the Rauchle Service Club are encouraged to assist in some way with the Wishart Rotary Club‟s book sale. Volunteers are required for an hour or two throughout the weekend to help keep the tables well stocked and tidy. Many volunteers are required from 2.30pm on the Sunday afternoon to help pack up unsold books. This is a huge job and our assistance is essential to the success of the event. Please keep some time free on this weekend.

Pauls Collect a Cap Bonus Offer – Limited time only! Pauls is donating 20c for every specially marked Good to GO cap collected before 29 April. Please assist by sending clean caps to Mrs Holley or to the Lower Office! ENVIRONMENTAL COUNCIL Something to Think About I‟ve always considered myself to be environmentally aware and ready to take action, however Earth Hour really opened my eyes to the harsh truth. Despite my best intentions I am not doing all I can for the environment. Therefore I am challenging myself and all of the Mansfield High Students to be more proactive in their attitudes towards the environment. Earth Hour is a worldwide event organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and held on the last Saturday of March annually. It encourages households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights for one hour to raise awareness about the need to take action on climate change. Like many businesses, YouTube was very proactive in its stance on earth hour as it dimmed its entire site with a virtual light switch for the day, as it did last year. On the holidays, I spent my days switching between Facebook and YouTube, when not working or going out with friends. On the day of Earth Hour I consistently turned off the virtual light and patted myself on the back after each time despite the fact that whilst I was aware of Earth Hour I wasn‟t actually doing anything to help the cause nor protect the environment. This got me thinking about how technology is making it easier to spread a message but less easy to get physically involved. Being a member of the Environmental Council affords me the opportunity to actually get out and do something, like plant a tree, speak on assemblies or even write this article. Teenagers need to take the initiative and become more involved in the environment. I challenge the students and their families to find ways to be more active in helping the environment, like taking part in working bees, planting a tree or spending time cleaning up litter.

By Zoe Bloomfield (Writer for Mansfield High‟s Environmental Council) Poster competition This term the Environmental Council will begin an education project which aims to increase general awareness about the environmental impact of our carbon footprint and reduce the amount of electricity used in our school. To this end, the Environmental Council is holding a poster competition for students to create posters that spread the message – When you leave the room - turn off the lights, turn off the fans, and turn off the computer monitors. Completed posters can be saved on the Student common drive in the folder called Environment – Poster comp which can be found in the year level folder appropriate to your year level. Entries close at the end of week 3.

CHAPLAINCY NEWS Chaplaincy Day 2012 - 4 May! Chaplaincy Day is coming!! For those who are new to our school, the purpose of Chaplaincy Day is to raise awareness of and support for the Chaplaincy program and the work Ben does in our school. The day will be a 4x4 day to allow for a longer lunch break so that the students can enjoy the inflatable obstacle course, games, giveaways, live performances, the 96.5 radio van and heaps of food and drink stalls. Support Chaplaincy Each year in Term 2, the school highlights to parents and community members the opportunity to support the vital work performed by our Chaplain, Ben Cherry. Ben is available to our students, their families and our staff regardless of race or creed. He is always ready to provide a listening ear and caring presence for those struggling. Ben also organises positive, fun activities for our students and works hard to foster a supportive, caring school community. If you would like to financially support the Chaplaincy program, please print and complete the slip at the end of this newsletter and forward it along with your donation to the Upper or Lower Office. All donations of $2 or more are tax deductible and a receipt for income tax purposes will be forwarded to you before the end of the Financial Year. Thank you for your support. SCHOOL BASED YOUTH HEALTH NURSE Heart Week 2012 (Sunday 6 May to Saturday 12 May) During Heart Week 2012, the Heart Foundation will be urging all Australians to learn the warning signs and symptoms of a heart attack and encouraging people to call Triple Zero (000) quickly. Did you know that Men who are 40 and live in Australia have a one in two (50%) chance of having a heart attack by the age of 70? For an average 40 year old Australian woman, the chances are one in three (33%). When someone has a heart attack, every minute counts. If someone is having a heart attack they might feel:

1. Pain, pressure, heaviness or tightness in the chest, shoulder, neck, arms, jaw or back.

2. They may also feel nauseous, dizzy, cold sweat or shortness of breath.

Although chest pain or discomfort is the most common symptom of a heart attack, some people will not experience chest pain at all, while others will experience only mild chest pain or discomfort. Others may experience one symptom, while some experience a combination. The one thing all heart attacks have in common is that the sooner you receive treatment, the less damage will be done. If you experience any heart attack signs and symptoms for 10 minutes, if they are severe or get progressively worse, call Triple Zero (000) immediately and ask for an ambulance. Remember it‟s always OK to call Triple Zero (000). Too many people lose their lives because they take too long to call Triple Zero (000). Getting to hospital quickly can reduce the damage to your heart muscle and increase your chance of survival. In hospital, staff will give you treatments that help to reduce this damage. For more information, call the Heart Foundation on 1300 362 787 or go to the campaign website www.heartattackfacts.org.au CANTEEN ROSTER
