Under the leadership of Artistic Director Barbara Gaines and Executive Director Criss Henderson, Chicago Shakespeare has redefined what a great American Shakespeare theater can be—a company that defies theatrical category. This Regional Tony Award-winning theater’s year-round season features as many as twenty productions and

650 performances—including plays, musicals, world premieres, family programming, and presentations from around the globe. The work is enjoyed by 225,000 audience members annually, with one in four under the age of eighteen. Chicago Shakespeare is the city’s leading producer of international work, and touring its own productions across five continents has garnered multiple accolades, including the prestigious Laurence Olivier Award. Emblematic of its role as a global theater, the company spearheaded Shakespeare 400 Chicago, celebrating Shakespeare’s legacy in a citywide, yearlong international arts and culture festival, which engaged 1.1 million people. The Theater’s nationally acclaimed arts in literacy programs support the work of English and drama teachers, and bring Shakespeare to life on stage for tens of thousands of their students each school year. Over the summer, the company tours a professional production of Shakespeare’s work, free for all, to neighborhood parks across the city. In 2017 the Theater unveiled The Yard at Chicago Shakespeare—with its innovative design that has changed the shape of theater architecture. Isango Ensemble is a South African theater company that draws its artists mainly from the townships surrounding Cape Town. Founded in 2000, Isango’s stage productions and films have played to sold-out audiences across the globe, receiving numerous international awards, including Berlin Film Festival’s Golden Bear Award

for Best Film, Paris’ Best Opera Globes de Cristal, London’s Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival, and San Francisco Black Film Festival’s Best World Cinema title, among others. Isango Ensemble reimagines classics from the Western theater canon and creates new work and adaptations within a South African context. The company’s structure embraces artists at all stages of their creative development, allowing senior artists to lead and contribute towards the growth of rising talents. Outside of South Africa, Isango Ensemble has performed in Australia, Austria, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, Singapore, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and across the United States. Their 2012 production, co-produced by Shakespeare’s Globe in London, opened the Globe to Globe Festival in 2012 and was invited back for an encore run in 2013. The group has partnered with The Global Fund, raising funds to accelerate the end of AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria as epidemics—directly impacting programs in countries most in need.

JONNY STEINBERG (Author) Mr. Steinberg is an award-winning South African author. His books include: Midlands, The Number (both of which won the Sunday Times Alan Paton Award), Three-Letter Plague (Sizwe’s Test in the US, where it was named one of Washington Post’s Books of the Year and shortlisted for the Wellcome Trust Book Prize), Thin Blue, Little Liberia: An African Odyssey in New York, and A Man of Good Hope. In 2013 Steinberg was among the inaugural winners of the Windham-Campbell Literature Prizes, awarded by Yale University. He currently teaches African studies at the University of Oxford.

MARK DORNFORD-MAY (Adapter/Director) Born in Yorkshire and brought up in Chester, he has worked in South Africa with members of the company since 2000. Mr. Dornford-May has directed all of Isango Ensemble’s stage productions: The Mysteries (Yiimimangaliso), The Snow Queen, Der Silbersee, The Beggar’s Opera (Ibali Loo Tsotsi), uCarmen, The Magic Flute (Impempe Yomlingo), A Christmas Carol (iKrismas Kherol), Aesop’s Fables, La Boheme (Abanxaxhi), The Ragged-Trousered Philanthropists (Izigwili Ezidlakazelayo), Venus and Adonis, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and A Man of Good Hope. He has also produced and directed all of Isango Ensemble’s films: uCarmen eKhayelitsha, Son of Man, Unogumbe (Noye’s Fludde), and Breathe (Umphefumlo).

MANDISI DYANTYIS (Music Director/Jonny) Mr. Dyantyis has been with the company since 2006. He has been co-music director and arranger/composer for all Isango Ensemble productions since 2006, including: The Magic Flute (Impempe Yomlingo), A Christmas Carol (iKrismas Kherol), Venus and Adonis, The Mysteries (Yiimimangaliso), Aesop’s Fables, and The Ragged-Trousered Philanthropists (Izigwili Ezidlakazelayo). Mr. Dyantyis traveled to New York to work with graduate acting students from New York University’s Tisch School of Acting, exploring relationships between South African and American theater methods. In 2012 he was the musical director and composer for Isango’s Venus & Adonis, which opened the Globe to Globe season at Shakespeare’s Globe in London and subsequently returned to the Globe in 2013. Mr. Dyantyis arranged and directed the music for the films Unogumbe and Breathe (Umphefumlo). In 2015 he adapted Bizet’s uCarmen and Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream for Isango Ensemble’s US tour. In 2016 Mr. Dyantyis composed and conducted the music for A Man of Good Hope, which ran at the Young Vic, New York’s BAM, and London’s Royal Opera House. 2017 saw the creation of Isango Ensemble’s production of SS Mendi – Dancing the Death Drill, based on Fred Khumalo’s book, Dancing the Death Drill, for which Mr. Dyantyis created new music and incorporated World War I songs. In 2019 he arranged Bach’s St. Matthew Passion for marimbas and created new music for the show.

LUNGELO NGAMLANA (Choreographer) Mr. Ngamlana is an associate artist of Isango Ensemble. He joined the company in 2007 and has been the choreographer for all subsequent Isango Ensemble productions. Prior to joining Isango, he was hosted by the Royal Opera House for the International Dance Fellowship in 2007. His theater credits include: The Magic Flute (Impempe Yomlingo), A Christmas Carol (iKrismas Kherol), The Mysteries (Yiimimangaliso), Aesop’s Fables, The Ragged-Trousered Philanthropists (Izigwili Ezidlakazelayo), Venus & Adonis, La Bohème, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, uCarmen, A Man of Good Hope, SS Mendi – Dancing the Death Drill, and St. Matthew Passion. He currently teaches at NYU annually and, before joining Isango Ensemble, he worked as a teacher, performer, and choreographer with many dance and theater groups both at home in South Africa and internationally.

MANUEL MANIM (Lighting Designer) Mr. Manim is the co-founder of the Market Theatre and has previously been the director of Performing Arts Administration at the University of the Witwatersrand and director of the Baxter Theatre Centre. His career in theater lighting and producing spans over fifty years, and he has worked with lsango Ensemble since its first production more than ten years ago. His accolades include: Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres from the French Government, Naledi Life Achievement Award, Fleur du Cap Lifetime Achievement Award, Arts and Culture Trust Lifetime Achievement Award, and The National Order of lkhamanga, Silver.

LESLEY NOTT MANIM (Speech and Dialogue Coach) Ms. Manim has worked in professional theater, film, and television since 1975 as a performer, director, and vocal, acting, dialogue, text interpretation and accent coach for both South African and international productions. She has designed and taught workshops and master classes in voice and acting, as well as adjudicating drama festivals. She has been a dialogue coach and casting assistant for television, film, and commercials. Ms. Manim has taught text interpretation at the Market Theatre Laboratory, voice classes and tutorials at the University of Witwatersrand, and text interpretation, accent, and performance skills at AFDA Cape Town. She has a private practice teaching individuals communication skills. She has worked with lsango Ensemble since 2007 as a speech, dialogue, and text interpretation coach.

THOBILE JIM DYASI (Company) Mr. Dyasi was born in Pampierstad, Northern Cape, and joined lsango Ensemble in 2011. His theater and opera credits with Isango Ensemble include: The Magic Flute (lmpempe Yomlingo), uCarmen, A Man of Good Hope, SS Mendi – Dancing the Death Drill, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, St. Matthew Passion. Other credits include L’elisir d’amore, The Marriage of Figaro, II viaggio a Reims, Adriana Lecouvreur and La rondine (University of Cape Town), where he received a performer’s diploma in opera.

NOMBONGO FATYI (Company) Ms. Fatyi was born in Cape Town, and joined Isango Ensemble in 2013. Her theater and opera credits with Isango Ensemble include: SS Mendi – Dancing the Death Drill, The Magic Flute (lmpempe Yomlingo), A Man of Good Hope, and St. Matthew Passion.

THANDOKAZI FUMBA (Company) Ms. Fumba was born in Cape Town, Western Cape, and joined Isango Ensemble in 2016. Her theater and opera credits include Isango Ensemble’s A Man of Good Hope. Ms. Fumba also played Paulina in the Siyaya Traditional Group.

ZAMILE GANTANA (Rooda) Mr. Gantana was born in Kimberley, Northern Cape, and joined lsango Ensemble in 2000.
