Chamber Planning for Community Visioning ProjectThe Chamber recently voted to partner with the City of Dubuque on the next community-wide visioning project. Together the public/private partnership will work to gather feedback that represents the community’s voice on the next big ideas for the Dubuque area. With the success of Envision 2010 process now 5 years past, the Chamber understands the value and importance of visioning projects. Envision 2010 resulted in much of the economic and quality of life progress we enjoy today. Likewise, the process identified emerging leaders and generated a new sense of community pride and enthusiasm. The new visioning partnership between the City and the Chamber is in the early planning stages. The goal to launch the new process is slated to happen before the end of the Chamber fiscal year.

Chamber Board Approves Air Service Grant Funding ExtensionThe Chamber Board of Directors voted to extend their match-funding portion of the federal DOT community air service grant that was awarded to the Dubuque Regional Airport back in 2009. This federal grant provides our community the opportunity to potentially add additional flights, recruit additional carriers, or open new airport hubs. The grant officially expires at the end of this calendar year, however the Dubuque Regional Airport is formally requesting an extension on the grant.

The Chamber has been the leading organizational advocate for air service retention and expansion for years. We work with our Dubuque Regional Airport colleagues, chamber members, elected officials and friends in both the public and private sector to protect and enhance our community’s air service. We have participated in revenue guarantees, travel-bank guarantees, letter-writing campaigns, air service forums, advocacy visits, in addition to building the all-important relationships with American Airlines to secure Dubuque’s needs. Members consistently indicate that local air service is of significant importance to their business needs. The ability for our business community to move goods, services and human capital to and from our community in an expeditious and efficient manner is critical.

The Chamber will learn in coming months whether or not the grant extension is awarded. We do know that continued support and advocacy must be an integral focus of our transportation infrastructure priorities.

“We searched for the best organization to provide opportunities for our employees in developing relationships and providing networking opportunities. The Dubuque Chamber’s Young Professionals program was the best choice.”

Chamber Cover StoryChamber Reviews Board of Regents

Proposed New Funding ModelThe Chamber is gathering information on the Iowa State Board of Regents proposed new and controversial funding model for state colleges and universities. Performance-based funding incents our state colleges and universities for increased Iowa student enrollment. The premise of this new model is to demonstrate state pride and support by favoring our own. However, this approach seems counter-intuitive to our Iowa economic and quality of life goals, most notably talent recruitment and retention.

Workforce development is our number one priority as a community and as a state. We are not alone in our workforce challenges. We are not just competing with other communities and other states, we are competing with the world. The amazing race for talent has only just begun and the winners of future economic success will be those regions that possess an educated, skilled, trained and qualified workforce. Talent recruitment and retention is an absolute imperative to our economic growth and prosperity. The Chamber will be reviewing this model with our members and stakeholders. We will be talking with our elected officials and chamber colleagues throughout the state. The Chamber does not yet have an official position but we do know there are challenges with this model that could have far-reaching unintended consequences and workforce implications that impact Iowa for years to come.

2014-15 YEA! Class at Envision Sports Design.

By engaging in this hands on approach to learning, students are able to identify with a local entrepreneur and learn how his journey may apply to starting their own business. It is trips like this that make YEA! the unique experience that it is and takes experiential learning to a whole new level!

Tom Rauen (Envision Sports Design) demonstrates the screen-printing process.

Click Here to Learn More about YEA!

On Tuesday, November 11, students from the Dubuque Chamber Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) visited Envision Sports Design for a behind the scenes look at what it takes to run a successful and fun business!

2014-15 YEA! Class first field trip.

Tom Rauen, who started Envision nine years ago in Dubuque shared his own entrepreneurial success story with the students. YEA! Students heard where his business idea came from, what the challenges have been and what skills it takes to keep the business running.

YEA! is a ground breaking program that teaches students how to make a job- not take a job! In addition to lessons inside the classroom, YEA! introduces students to all types of areas of business through field trips, guest lectures, introducing them to business mentors and community leaders.
