49.8% of children under 5 suffer from chronic malnutrition in Guatemala

(Encuesta Nacional de Salud Materno Infantil [ENSMI] 2009).

Guatemala has the third highest rate of chronic malnutrition in the world

    (UNICEF 2009).

Every year Guatemala loses more than $300 million in GNP due to vitaminand mineral deficiencies (Banco Mundial 2010).

Chronic malnutrition in Guatemala results in stunted growth, slower

cognitive development, and lower lifetime earnings (INCAP 2010).

    How Chronic Malnutrition Affects Growth

Nine-year-old Guatemalan children. The group on the left was born in

Guatemala and the group on the right was born in the United States(from ABC News)

It was long that the Maya were genetically shorter. Research looking at Mayachildren raised in the U.S. shows that it is malnutrition and not genes thatresults in their short stature.

Man+ and the Shalom Foundation seek funding to begin production anddistribution of the Man+ RUSF while solidifying processes Mani+ needs toscale up to full production. We will begin by producing circa 4 tons per month(which will treat 3000 children) and scale-up over the first 18 months to 40 tonsper month (enough to treat 30,000 children).

Starting the first stage of production is costly because of initial capital outlaysand not being able to take advantage of economies of scale.

Need for Assistance at a Crucial Stage
