IMPERIALISM

When one country takes over another country both economically and politically.

• “Scramble For Africa”• European nations were competing for control of colonies in Africa in order to gain land, resources, and influence.• Germany was attempting tocontrol lands in Africa where Britain and France were established

MILITARISM

Policy of building up strong military forces to prepare for war.

• The growing European divide had led to an arms race between the main countries.

• There was a desire to create a large amount of weapons as well as building up a nation’s army and navy

• The armies of both France and Germany had more than doubled between 1870 and 1914, and there was fierce competition between Britain and Germany for mastery of the seas.

Pride in or devotion to ones country.

• Germany was extremely proud of the military power they held after the Franco-Prussian war and felt nearly unstoppable• The French had been embarrassed and wanted to

regain their pride• Pan-Germanism-movement to unify people of all

German speaking countries• Pan-Slavism-movement to unify people of the

Slavic people

ALLIANCES

An agreement between two or more countries to work together for the benefit of each country

• Germany sought to ally with Austria-Hungary in order to prevent war from Russia while Austria-Hungary seeks the protection against Russia

• Italy allied to benefit from the strength of the alliance and seek out new colonies

• France and Russia allied because they are wary of the strength of the Triple Alliance-France seeks the strength of the union and Russia benefits from French loans

• England allied as a means to curb Germany’s increasing Imperialistic efforts

ASSASINATION

The deliberate murder of a high-ranking government official.

• The “spark” that started WWI• On June 28, 1914 Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir

to the Austria Hungarian Throne was assassinated by Gavrilo Princip, a Serbian nationalist who believed that Bosnia should belong to Serbia

• Austria blamed Serbia for Ferdinand’s death and declared war on Serbia.

• Germany pledged their support for Austria -Hungary.

• Russia pledged their support for Serbia.

• Germany declares war on Russia
