Demodex
-mange – which is a mite infestation-can be hereditary in that they pass down a lack of adequate immune defense against the mites-all dogs have some mites but when there is a immune related or nutritional or environmental stresses impact the dog it gets bad- adult demodex usually means there is another health issue- not contagious-starts out with patchy bald spots the the leg head and body
Treatment
-really good high protein, high fat foods-Ivermectin-oral milbemycin, oral for six to eight weeks-ivermectin for demodex -
Sacoptic Mange
-commonly known as canine scabies-caused by the parasite Sarcoptes scabiei-easily controllable-can infect all ages and breeds-can live for days off of the host-prefer less hairy areas-small red pustules and yellow crust on the skin-very itchy- can enlarge lymph nodes-don’t itch for the first weeks of infection-contagious- usually is around eyes, mouth, ear tips and feet
Treatment
-clip hair-bathe with benzoyl peroxide shampoo than apply an organophosphate dip (paramite)
-lyme dips and Amitraz dips- every two weeks – 2 to 3 times, sponge on face and ears-dips are hard on very young or very old dogs.-revolution is good for (once a month) heartworm, flea control, ? tics, and sarcoptic mange.- ivermectin, can go away quickly if it persists it is probably demodex-people can get it as a rash, no big deal
