24th Edition

A 17-day program for senior R&D and Innovation Managers

Summary State-of-the-art overview of how to manage R&D and Innovation from a strategic level and in a global context

Participant Profile Senior managers responsible for key issues relating to how your company manages technology

Key Benefits Manage technology strategically to position your company for future business growth

The abbreviation IMOT stands for International Management of Technology, which was the original name of this program. We have updated the program name. Since we have many alumni who know the program by its original name, we have kept the IMOT abbreviation in the tag line.

Manage your company’s technology strategy with confidence

These are exciting times. The business environment of today calls for contributions from R&D and innovation to guide product renewal and business growth. Shifts in the business environment affect your company: Competition is becoming truly global – there is no place to hide.

Western companies need to exploit emerging markets for product development and innovation. These markets require products that combine low cost and high reliability.

The R&D organization is becoming more complex. You have more interfaces, sites, time zones, organizational functions, customers and internal governance bodies to care about. You have to rely on your core team but the extended team of stakeholders and resources is growing. This complexity has to be harnessed within limited R&D budgets and short lead times..

Like many of your R&D colleagues in other industries you must respond to these changes. It is not enough to be reactive. Instead you need to craft a pro-active global strategy for your R&D and innovation.

This 17-day executive program will give you accelerated learning of how to manage global R&D and innovation. After completion of the program, you will be able to tackle your company’s technology challenges with confidence.

Welcome to join the IMOT Program of 2016!

Why companies nominate their senior technology managers to this programFor companies in technology-intensive industries, business conditions are changing with technology. Technology evolves at a dramatic pace. Thus, it is necessary for companies to make the right strategic choices to stay ahead in the competitive race.

This program is designed to equip the company’s most senior technology managers with research-based concepts and practical tools to manage global R&D and Innovation. The participation from the company will ensure access to the latest thinking of how to manage global R&D operations.

Managing Global R&D and Innovation is an open-enrollment program with senior participants from many companies allowing networking and informal “benchmarking”.

The program consists of three intensive modules that ensure a steep learning curve and a limited time away from desk. After each module, the participant will already implement some of the learning points. After completion of the program, the participant will be well equipped to guide the company’s global R&D and Innovation.

For delivering this program, Chalmers University of Technology uses its international network of experts in Europe, India, China and the United States.

This is the 24th edition of the program. Many global companies have chosen to work with us to develop their senior R&D managers by nominating them to this program. Nominating an employee is a good way to show trust and build loyalty and prepare him/her for his/her future career in your company.

Participant ProfileMost people that companies nominate are senior managers responsible for key issues relating to how the company manages technology. The participants are executives, directors or managers with at least five years’ experience from senior management responsibilities at technology-intensive companies.

Participants likely hold the position of Vice President of R&D and Innovation, Divisional Manager, Section Manager, General Manager, R&D Manager, Innovation Manager, Director of Strategic Product Development or similar.

“I am now in a better position to support and guide my team”“The program showed the big picture and made me understand what decision points we have ahead of us. Just the fact that the program discussed issues from a macro perspective has made me prepared to view my own business from a distance. Now, I feel more confident in management meetings to contribute in discussions and ask those sharp questions that highlight the key issues that we need to solve to take our company forward.

We were two managers from the same area in Tetra Pak participating in the program. This was very useful both in terms of reflections related to our specific situation but also to actually test our learnings back home. After the program we decided to begin with just one initiative and really take that through. We selected “open innovation” and more specifically crowd sourcing. Now we have completed three challenges and are taking two of them further.

The most important learning point was how low-cost competition challenges old structures. In our industry we see how new, low-cost entrants make dents into our business. To stay ahead of that competition we need to combine innovation, low-cost thinking and speed without compromising on quality.

I am now in a better position to support and guide my team. I achieved a greater understanding of the overarching concepts allowing me to drive our development work in the right direction to achieve our long-term goals.”

Per Ericsson, Director Material Treatment & Finishing, Tetra Pak. Participant in the program cycle 2013-2014.
