Dear Exhibitors:

It is fair time again and we welcome you to the Douglas County Fair! We are happy that you are choosing to come to our Fair and exhibit your projects. We know you have put many hours of work into your projects and we respect you for this dedication and commitment. We also want to recognize the families, teachers and sponsors for all the help they have given you as you prepare your items for the fair. We are excited to showcase your talents!

This is the 158th year for the Douglas County Fair!! Sporting a new date, new location, new logo and new direction, the Fair is excited to welcome all. From our GrowUms contest for elementary school students to the talent competitions, the Fair is open to YOU, the people of Douglas County and beyond. This is YOUR fair and we want you to be a part of it.

DIVISION 10 – UPCYCLING TEXTILES

Entry Description Example: bl den bag beaded for a bag made out of blue jeans and embellished with beads. Upcycling is a way of processing an item that has fulfilled its useful life to make it better than the original. It is not a new concept. In the 30’s & 40’s families reused almost everything, repurposing items over and over again until they were nolonger useful. Upcycling is popular again for different reasons. Today upcycling:• keeps unwanted items out of the waste stream.• offers opportunities for creative expression.• is a way to make a family keepsake out of a textile item we’ve saved because it has special meaning. Write a story to pass on with the keepsake.Overview of Division: The focus in this division is on upcycling textiles (anything that is made of fibers (plant, animal, mineral or synthetic), yarns, or fabrics). Exhibits may be created from:(1) Non-Usable Textile Items: items that are no longer useful because they are old, tattered and torn, stained, outof-style, don’t fit and just not usable in their current form. Items include, but are not limited to: garments, accessories, neckties, jeans, quilts, table linens, curtains, sweaters, and afghans.(2) Bits and Pieces of Textile Materials: leftover from previous projects – things you’ve saved that have not previously been made into something useful. Examples include: small scraps of fabric, short ends of trims, oddsand ends of thread and yarn, trimmings from pieced blocks, and samples from trying new

techniques. (Classeshave been added to knitting and crochet for using partial skeins of yarn left from projects. Guidelines:• Information: Include a 1-2 page (8 ½ x 11) story with pictures.• The visible part of the new item must be at least 75% textile and not more than 25 % non-textile media like plastic, glass, wood, metal, and paper.• New sewing notions like zippers, glue, binding, buttons, hook & loop tape and belting may be used.• There are no restrictions on the non-visible materials used in the process of creating the item.NEW ITEM MADE FROM NON-USEABLE TEXTILE ITEM(S) 1001 Garment for adult or child1002 Accessory for adult or child (purse, bag, hats,)1003 Scarf or other neckwear1004 Decorative item for wall1005 Decorative item for table- top1006 Decorative accessory like a pillow or throw1007 Item for a child, like a pillow, stuffed toy, doll clothes, items for creative play1008 Keepsake with story1009 Other, not listedITEM MADE FROM BITS & PIECES OF TEXTILE MATERIALS 1010 Garment for adult or child1011 Accessory for adult or child (purse, bag, hats)1012 Scarf or other neckwear1013 Decorative item for wall1014 Decorative item for table- top1015 Decorative accessory like a pillow or throw1016 Item for a child, like a pillow, stuffed toy, doll clothes, items for creative play
