• Residential building with 8 apartments
• High standard• Solar collectors, photovoltaics
and a wind mill • Electric cars, scooters and
bicycles• Balancing electricity• Control by app• Interviewing and collecting data
Results?• Still in analyse phase – but some
conclusions can be made
Case 1: ”The Sustainability”Smart homes – combining smart grids, renewable energy and electric mobility
Case 2: Northern Harbour
Scope: Excess and renewable heat for the district heating grid
- Mapped energy, waste and transport flows in the Northern Harbour
- Interviewed energy produces and consumers in the Northern Harbour
…continued to EPIC 2020
The project:• EU-project ongoing between 2013-2016, and includes 4 port areas
in 4 countries.
Activities:• Starting up a stakeholder platform for an active network in the port
area. • Investigation of the bioenergy potential in the harbour and
surrounding region.• Study established businesses untapped resource flows• Finding opportunities for new cooperation's connected to the
untapped resource flows • Forming vision and strategies for implementing the symbiotic
concept
…which lay the basis for “Shared Energy doubles the force”
The project• 12 partners with connections to the port area – Industries, public/port
authorities, academia and knowledge institutes
Activities:• Optimize the industries use of energy, map untapped flows, and utilize those
flows in existing businesses or new establishments/applications;
• Low grade heat as a resource for farming – called a biological cooling chain;
• Test smart grids to industries;
• Investigate and test a higher temperature flexibility in the heating grid;
• The future role for the system operator
• Vision and strategies for industrial symbiosis in the port area
Stakeholder roles
• The city as a facilitator of the process • E.ON – a champion• Other industries – followers, own initiatives varies
Workshop – time to get busy!
Which are the main barriers for developing industrial symbiosis in your respective areas?
Barriers (from our perspective, some examples)
• Lack of knowledge about industrial symbiosis• Lack a champion – different roles, positions and
organisations in the area;• Traditional planning of new and existing areas;• Strategic marketing in favour for both new establishments
and to fit the ”existing” industrial symbiosis;• Business confidentiality – not an open attitude to others• Actors may find it difficult to see their new role;• Matureness of catching new opportunities within business
development differs;• Low knowledge of neighbours businesses;• Limited resources to go beyond business as usual;• Difficult to estimate the results and effects of industrial
symbiosis (with that; difficult to attract actors to engage)
How do we overcome the barriers?
– Solutions and opportunities?– Technical and organisational? – Key actors and target groups?
