Malki Foundation e-cards are an ideal way to mark a special event

Everyone can help!

Renewing our CommitmentWith the work of the Malki Foundation now approaching its fifteenth year, it’s reasonable to draw some tentative conclusions about where we have gotten, where we are heading and how true we have been to our stated values.

Our mission from day one has been empowerment. It still is.

Our successful joint venture with Yad Sarah allows us to ship valuable home-care and mobility equipment to families in every part of Israel. Close to 50,000 non-medical therapy sessions have changed lives for the better. Families living in Israel’s northern and southern periphery welcome with relief the arrival of our therapists on wheels to work with their child at home.

With all the benefits that they bring, the core value underlying these three Malki Foundation programs remains our determination to help the parents of children with special needs by restoring their belief that they play an indispensable role in their child’s future.

We never ask families for thanks, and certainly don’t expect it. Providing support is a privilege. But the notes of appreciation posted on the walls of our Jerusalem office would move the most hardened heart to tears. It astonishes us how a modest degree of the right kind of carefully-designed intervention can produce so much good. Malki Roth Z”L, whose name and memory are central to our work, understood this.

With the start of the New Year, we are adopting a new visual language and a new logo. We believe these will sharpen our message to supporters current and future, and help us consolidate the gains we have achieved with the government and with families. But be assured that our core values remain the same as always.

May we all have a blessed New Year. שנה טובה ומבורכת

Making the Impossible HappenNethaniel was born with cerebral palsy and his parents were told that he would never walk. Now 10 years old, he just completed a 2 km race!

From the beginning, Nethaniel’s parents refused to accept ‘no’ for an answer. When he was released from hospital, they started him on an intensive paramedical therapy program, with financial support from the Malki Foundation Therapies at Home program.

In May, Nethaniel participated in the 2 kilometer (1 mile) Givat Shmuel Fun Run, walking and running together with extended family and friends. The money raised was donated to the Malki Foundation to help other children with disabilities and to “pay forward” the support they received.

Debbie Fishman, Director of the Malki Foundation, says: “Nathaniel’s astonishing progress is a tribute to his and his family’s determination. When we empower children to succeed, we help them to overcome their limitations. Nethaniel, we are proud of you!”

Malki’s LegacyThe Malki Foundation was established in 2001, by Frimet and Arnold Roth to honor the memory of their daughter Malki, murdered in a terrorist attack in downtown Jerusalem when she was fifteen.

Malki’s experiences with her own severely disabled youngest sister Haya led her to become passionate about bringing happiness, support and encouragement to the lives of children facing similar challenges. Malki volunteered to work with children with special needs. At school and in the community, she inspired her peers to do the same.

Since its inception, the Malki Foundation has been a source of empowerment for families choosing home care for their child with special needs, providing specialist equipment and essential paramedical therapies. We believe no living arrangements work better for a child with special needs than living at home, and no caregivers – and advocates – do a better job than the parents and siblings.

Says Arnold Roth: “It is a constant inspiration to meet, and to know about, youngsters for whom Malki's legacy lives on. Support from schools in different parts of the world, along with funds raised by creative and energetic youngsters about the same age Malki was, deliver a powerful message. It's a privilege to be part of an organization that enables so much good to be done."

Providing The Tools

Empowering Parents to Help Their ChildrenYour child is in hospital receiving physical support and intensive therapy, but the day comes when it’s time to take him home. How are you going to care for him? This is the day that many parents turn to the Malki Foundation’s Equipment Lending Unit at Yad Sarah.

The Malki Foundation has worked in partnership with Yad Sarah for the past 12 years and is responsible for purchasing all of the specialist children’s equipment that is loaned out through their nationwide network.

Osnat is one of the Occupational Therapists working in SHACHAR- the Rehabilitation Education Medical Day Care Center of the ALYN Hospital in Jerusalem. She recognizes the lifeline that the Malki Foundation provides to many families. She says: “When a child has a supportive chair that enables them to sit upright at the table, everyone feels that they are part of the family. Instead of lying on a bed, they can interact with their siblings and learn new skills. The unique assistive equipment provided by the Malki Foundation, such as standers, walkers, and special wheelchairs, makes all the difference in the world to the families of children with severe disabilities.”

Helping kids Stay on TrackThe Malki Foundation funds a unique physical therapy program called Maslul, providing sport therapy sessions for children and teenagers with disabilities.

Maslul director Uri Lahav-Goldshmid explains: “A person with disabilities who has been going to physiotherapy for many years not only gets bored, but the effectiveness of the repeated exercises starts to diminish. They have to stay motivated and keep moving to prevent regression, and that's where Maslul comes in. We run stimulating 3-hour sessions each week in small groups of children with CP, developmental disabilities, autism, head injuries and other conditions.”

Children who are accepted to the Maslul program participate in a wide range of enjoyable sports activities, in an environment equipped for their mobility needs. The program is designed not only to improve their motor skills and strengthen muscles, but also to improve their compliance and social skills, building self-confidence through teamwork.

The Maslul program is being seed funded by Israeli donors in honor of their parents Miriam and Nathan Schlofsky. Currently it is only running in Jerusalem, but the Malki Foundation is looking to expand it to other suitable rehabilitation facilities around Israel. Says Debbie Fishman, Director of Keren Malki: “We know of many teenagers who have maximized their physical potential, but need ongoing encouragement to stay healthy and mobile. We would love to find funding to enable similar programs in centers around Israel.”
