What Is the Malcolm Baldrige Quality
Award ? Program established in 1987.
Raises awareness about the importance of performance excellence in
driving the U.S. and global economy
Provides organizational assessment tools and criteria
Educates leaders in businesses, schools, health care organizations, and
government and non-profit agencies about the practices of best-in-class
organizations
Recognizes national role models and honours them with the only
PresidentialAward for performance excellence.
Award is given annually to companies in the manufacturing and servicesectors

Malcolm Baldrige :
Secretary of Commerce from 1981 to 1987 .
He was a very big proponent of quality management at a time
when quality was not a large issue .
He helped to draft one of the early versions of the QualityImprovement Act .
In recognition of his contributions in showing the importance
of quality, the award was named after him.

Reasons for the Establishment of the Malcolm
Baldrige Quality Award :
Government officials saw that quality improvement
was no longer an option for American business, but
a necessity .
Many businesses did not think quality was an
important issue .
Others knew that it was important, but did not
know where to begin the improvement process .

The criteria for winning the award are very demanding and
simply trying to align a company to them is highly beneficial .
It can be used as a motivational tool for workers to rallybehind a common goal .

Organizations headquartered in the U.S. may apply for the
Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award.
Even its territories may apply for the award, including U.S.
subunits of foreign companies.

Assessment of a MBNQA Winner:
55% of evaluation is based on how the organization
is run, 45% on the basis of performance .

Examiners attend a comprehensive training course.
Join a group of industry experts and leaders from all sectors .
Attend the invitation-only Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award
Ceremony.

Board of Examiners composed of primarily private-sectorexperts in quality and continuous improvement from all
sectors of the economy.
Independent board will research each competingorganization, and follows the specific criteria.
Site visits consist of 4-6 examiners .
Examiners are all volunteers .

DUTIES ANDRESPONSIBILITIES OF EXAMINERS
They attend a training coursenamed one of the Top 10 Government
Leadership Development Programs by Leadership Excellence
focused on the Criteria for performance excellence and the Baldrige
award process
Examiners independently review an application for the Baldridgeaward
As part of a team of experts, they participate in a consensus review of
the applicant organization via teleconference and an online scorebook
They Prepare the final scorebook as a foundation for the feedback
report sent to the applicant as an aid in its journey toward performance
excellence.

They help to conduct an in-depth, on-site review of an applicant organization
act as an ambassador for the Baldrige program and for performance excellence
They attend the Baldrige Award Ceremony, where the president of the United
