SCHONENBERG STAFFMeet Nazari Hickman – Data and Communication Manager

“I was born in Cape Town and grew up in Wellington with my mom, dad and older sister. In 2008, after completing matric from La Rochelle Girls High School in Paarl, I started my life’s journey by moving to Stellenbosch on my own to study at the University. In 2015, I obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Humanities and I’m currently reading for a Bachelor of Commerce Industrial Psychology degree. As Data and Communication Manager, I hold a pivotal position in the HOA office and have to use my theoretical knowledge, skill set and hands-on experience daily. It’s important to maintain a good work-life balance so in my free time, I go hiking and participate in trail run races on Sundays. I’m also very sociable and enjoy spending quality time with the people dearest to me. My motto is: focus on the now, the present, and the world around me.”

UPCOMING EVENTHERITAGE DAYCelebrate Heritage Day on Saturday, September 24 with pre-organized Schonenberg community braai events. All residents will be invited, along with their family and friends, to enjoy sociable, open-air braais doing what South Africans do best – gathering around a fire and cooking in a traditional way. Actually, nowadays, this public holiday is commonly known as National Braai Day.

If you’d like to volunteer as a “host” to assist with the arrangements needed to braai in your neighbourhood, e.g. a street braai, please contact Nazari on PABX 9 or send an email to [email protected] .

Landscaping upgrades planned for 2016 are on schedule. Continuing with the effort to reduce water requirements in our public gardens, the landscaping upgrade of Longmere Park, located at the far eastern end of Longmere Street, began by removing all the grass in this little Park. A weaving gravel pathway has been created running through the Park. Indigenous trees and numerous succulents are being planted in the scalloped beds. Gabion stones are being placed in attractive arrangements in the beds to provide colour contrast and also reduce water requirement. The waterwise landscaping upgrade for this Park has been designed as a model that could be introduced in other parts of our Estate if it proves to be successful.

As soon as the first autumn rain falls, I start hatching my winter planting plans! Because, as we all know, winter is the best time to introduce trees and shrubs, when the ground is workable and the plants have a chance to establish new roots before spring.

WINTER PLANTING TIME

Words and images by Cherry Crowden, homeowner and garden enthusiast.

This year, I not only wanted to plant a deciduous tree in our back garden to provide desperately-needed shade in the next hot, dry summer but I also wanted to plant more Dune Crowberry (Searsia crenata, previously known as Rhus crenata) outside our back garden in the landscaped area on the northern boundary adjacent to Somerset West Main Road. This embankment acts as a buffer zone between the walking / jogging laterite-surface pathway alongside the electric fencing and our private garden. In June 2013, we had donated 12 Dune Crowberry - an indigenous, moderately-quick growing, evergreen shrub - and Crown Landscaping garden workers had planted them along the top of the embankment. They have grown well and have formed an effective screening hedge which acts as privacy shield as well as a living windbreak at the back of our north-facing house. As a homeowner on the Schonenberg Estate, if you wish to enhance an area of ‘Common Property’, you have to ask for permis-sion from the management. Our neighbour was also interested in screening his border so I completed a joint application form (F_02), which is the “Request to upgrade / enhance common property”, and submitted it to HOA’s office. Ap-plication is simple, you have to provide the following information on the office form: the location and description of the site in the existing landscaped area; the plan or design of the request; and the motivation for the proposed request. You also have to state your financial contribution, which in our case was the

purchase of 30 Dune Crowberry (Searsia crenata) plants at a cost of R 30.00 each, and the provision of bonemeal and compost for planting. It’s necessary to commit to the aftercare of the area meaning watering - during the first year after planting, water is the most important element in tree and shrub survival; and weeding and mulching to promote the healthy growth of the vegetation. To give you an idea of the timeline: our request was submitted to SHOA on 3 May 2016: the site was inspected by Johann Dippenaar, Crown Landscaping Site Manager; site observations and recommendations were reviewed by the Environmental Sub-Committee and duly approved by the Estate Manager on 12 May 2016. Planting was scheduled for July 2016 with SHOA to pay for the labour carried out by Crown Landscaping. Early on a very cold morning at the beginning of July, Armstrong Jezile, Assistant Site Manager, arrived with two garden workers armed with spades and a pickaxe, to implement the plan. They worked hard to clear the areas of old ‘vygies’ or Sour Fig (Carpobrotus edulis).which had formed a dense carpet of ground cover, before directly planting the new Dune Crowberries into the well-prepared clay soil. We watered the plants thoroughy after planting and will continue to water once a week throughout the winter and increase to two to three times a week during hot, dry and / or windy weather. All the time watching our evergreen shrubs grow vigorously into strong hedges!
