WIND ENERGY, AMBITIOUS PLAN FOR 2015

Wind energy, a renewable resource that is used in a meaningful way in most European countries, is in the sights of the local authorities. Although there is an existing project in Ecuador of five years producing wind energy in the Galapagos Islands, by the year 2015 it is expected that we will have operational wind farms in three more provinces. The firm working in Galapagos Islands was launched in October 2007 as the first wind farm of Ecuador, lo-cated on San Cristóbal Island; the project now wants to extend to other areas of the island through the crea-tion of a second complex named project Baltra - Santa Cruz. With the environmental importance achieved through this program, the Ministry of Electricity and Renew-able Energy set a goal to meet the electrical demand with renewable energy by the year 2015. So far, accord-ing to the website from the Ministry, future wind projects will take place in Salinas (Santa Elena), Huasca-chaca and Villonaco (Loja), Membrillo(Azuay). The engineer Eduardo Solís, a Professor of the University of Specialties Holy Spirit, has begun developing a map of the wind energy stations in Ecuador. He hopes to publish this map on the website of the Ministry. Despite the fact that the country does not have a resource assessment tool today, according to Solis, there is significant development of these projects in Ecuador. "Newly is forming the investigative structure in the country." There are competitions for scholarships abroad. "We need professionals to come and put their knowledge into practice," words from the specialist Ruben Hi-dalgo, an integral part of the project in energy wind of the school Superior Politécnica del Litoral, Espol. In this institution, energy source studies began a few years ago, but until recently under the direction of Professor Marco Pazmiño (project leader), students carried out the installation of a wind turbine. This device allows for the measurement of speed and wind direction, characteristics that are important to determine the power density. This type of energy system has huge benefits and is not as polluting as resources such as oil. A kilowatt gen-erated from wind does not produce any amount of CO2, i.e. is a pure, ecological energy. Another benefit is that wind energy is much cheaper than solar. "We will continue importing equipment; it will always remain more expensive for us." "The objective is to do everything here and develop our own technology with our capacity." says Hidalgo. Solís highlights the history of this energy source recalling that it was initially used by boaters, and in the coun-tries of Europe with the windmills. "It has moved ships propelled by sails or operated the machinery of mills to move their blades." It wasn’t until the eighties that this energy suddenly became popular. Its process was developed through the energy obtained by the wind; It is the kinetic energy generated by the air currents and it is transmitted in other ways useful for human activities. The resource is abundant, renewable, and clean and it helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by replacing thermoelectric based on fossil fuels, which generates green energy. For wind energy, according to studies conducted by Solís, it is important to know diurnal, nocturnal, and seasonal variations of the winds. Also, its location is adjustable, according to the variation of the speed of air currents with height above the ground, the component of the bursts of air in short spaces of time and according to the maximum values in historical series of data with minimum duration of 20 years.

Canada takes part in the G8 Summit in the United States

The leaders of the Group of eight, including the Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, fo-cused on the crisis of Europe's economy and the future of Afghanistan, at its Summit near Washington, the U.S. capital. Food security in Africa, along with energy issues and climate, were also found in the agenda. The President of United States, Barack Obama, is the host of the leaders of Canada, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and two senior officials of the European Union. The Russian President, Vladimir Putin, did not agree to the appointment, increasing rumors about an escalation in tensions between Washington and Moscow. During a dinner on Friday, representatives addressed the nuclear aspirations of Iran, the civil strife in Syria and the security threat posed by North Korea. Canada and the European Union are seeking a free trade agreement and it is expected Harper to keep a meeting alone with the new French President, Francois Hollande. On Saturday, some leaders, including Harper and Obama, will fly to Chicago, for meetings of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
