As Spring is now upon us, we see flowers blossoming, trees sprouting new buds, insects resurfacing and the world is waking up again after the somber win-

ter slumber. What Spring brings is growth. As such, the focus of this month’s issue is just that: growth; the growth and development of the natural world acts as a metaphor for growth and personal devel-opment that befalls each and every one of us at one point or another in our lives. In this issue, we are fortunate to have an in-terview with Paul Prinvil, a co-founder of a Hai-

ti-focused organization called Racine Kreyol. Based out of the University of Northern Florida, Racine Kreyol consists of young Haitian Americans looking to reconnect with and rejuvenate Haitian culture here in America with hopes to reach out to Haiti and inspire growth and development in its time of need. As Prinvil conceptualizes, “if we can get young Haitian-Americans to develop a passion and a sense of responsibility to Haiti, then we’ve succeeded.” Also in this issue, our very own JE Mag publisher Jean edouard Gus-tave takes a different spin on growth by reflecting on the past and looking at past growing experiences. Gustave tells us of his travels to Haiti promoting his book and the many adoring fans he was greeted with. The sense of accom-plishment he felt is something that has stuck with him since then and has only promoted further growth from that point on. Along with the usual interviews with upcoming artists of various genres, beauty tips and shopping advice, this issue of JE Mag includes an article written by yours truly. “The Growth that Counts the Most” talks about what it means to grow and develop as a person and that it is something that should never cease in a person’s life. I have recently done a lot of growing, and I want to share my new insights with our readers. With all that said, we at the JE Mag hope this issue promotes person-al growth in your own life in whatever ways this issue speaks to you. Happy Spring, happy growing, and happy reading!

Need a new look this season? Always start a new look with a skin care routine that contains: cleanser, a day solution with SPF 25, which pro-

tects your skin from UV rays and evens out your skin tone. Last but not least, always apply an SPF moisturizer that helps nourish your skin, restores skin’s moisture balance and hydrates the skin.

This season keep your new look fresh and pretty even when the weather is work-ing against you. Follow these simple rules to maintain your makeup and be FABULOUS.

1. Before apply-ing your foun-

dation, always smooth your skin with a primer, which helps hold your make up throughout the day regardless of the weather con-dition.

2. Switch from heavy eye col-

or to light color, which keeps your face looking natu-ral and fresh by using light brown, peach or pink. Always use wa-terproof mascara during the hot season.

3. Choose a moisturizing

gloss instead of the heavy cream lipstick for a nat-ural look

Growth is a pro-cess that should never stop at any point in a person’s life. The only fac-tor that decides if

and when personal growth stops is whether or not you remain open to it. You will never know everything and you will never be perfect. All you can do is try to out-do yourself. Be better than you were yesterday. Always improve, expand and grow. As long as you keep this sentiment close to your heart, you will always be developing your character in the best way possible.Life and experience are the great-est teachers of all and their lessons never stop coming at us. Let’s just hope that we never stop listening and looking for them. The day you think you “know it all” is the day that you lose the game of life. When

it comes to personal growth and de-velopment, if you’re not constantly working toward improvement, your letting yourself decline. There is no homeostasis when it comes to per-sonal development. As time moves past us, it is essential to keep your-self open to experiences that teach valuable lessons.I know what it’s like to think that you know everything. I used to think that I had it all figured out. I was doing well in the honors program at school, I was living away from Mom and Dad with roommates in off-campus housing, I had my own car, always had a job, and paid my own bills. I thought that made me an adult. What I didn’t realize was that all I had done was taken my childish behavior and stuffed it in-side an adult shell. The most impor-tant parts of being an up-standing, respectable adult figure and role

model were still missing. I was still only inter-ested in instant gratification and didn’t have the patience or discipline to work toward long-term goals. I took my loved ones for granted and didn’t value them or all they do for me. And most importantly, I didn’t value and respect my-self enough to live in a way that was conducive to happiness and well-being beyond the present moment. Through the patient, loving guidance of my (newly-wed) amazing husband though, I’ve been able to look inward on myself, see my flaws, and open up to life’s manifold teachings. These teachings will vary in regards to what truths they illuminate. From how to take pride in your work, to how to discern what people to associate with, to the value of family and loved ones who truly love you in return; these les-sons are all a fundamental part to what we call “growing up”. It’s a process full of turning points and “ah-ha” moments. They are stepping stones on the path to higher greatness, and they are all laid out for everyone to climb. Life and experi-ence are always showing us the way. Growth is the essence of life. As soon as you close yourself off to growth you have opened yourself up to death. Remain vigilant in your quest for personal betterment. Be prepared to change as you gain knowledge of the world around you and discover its many truths. And I will warn you now – it is not easy to realize that you’ve been living under false pretenses, and it’s easy to reject them and justify your own beliefs as a defense mechanism to protect your pride, but the most crucial part of personal growth is knowing that you will always have more grow-ing to do. If you can accept this idea then you will continue to grow, develop and improve for the rest of your days on Earth. You just have to make sure that your eyes are open.

Weight gain is not only about how much you eat but it’s also about what you eat at a certain time, especially at night. Night time food cravings are harder to overcome. Th e rule is not to eat aft er 7 pm. I don’t know about you but I feel like I should

have the right to eat anytime I feel hungry. Well, guess what, you do have that right, but it’s your choices you have to worry about. Most of us feel hungry a few hours aft er dinner. Remember, do not starve yourself. Here are some of

the most helpful tips to help you manage and overcome that hunger.

1-Don’t skip breakfast. I know you are wondering what breakfast has to do with eating at night. Well, skipping meals slows down your metabolism, which slows down weight loss. Th e smart thing to do is to begin each day with breakfast. Yeah… I know. Most of us don’t have time to eat breakfast, but you should try to make time for it. Th e truth is, your body needs break-fast to fi re up your metabolism. Aft er breakfast, eat small meals every two or three hours. Th at keeps hunger off , energy levels high and makes it easier for your body to take care of the fat. Always try to reach for something healthy, such as low-fat yogurt topped with almonds or a piece of fruit.

2-Eat a large and healthy dinner. Don’t worry, eating a large healthy dinner is not going to add up extra calories. On the contrary, a well-balanced high fi ber dinner will help you to stay full longer and stay away from unhealthy snacks. Some high fi ber foods are whole wheat pasta, whole grain bread and veggies. If you are still hungry before bedtime, you can blend any fruit with low fat yogurt or low fat milk to make a yummy smoothie or make a mixed bowl of fruits. You can use frozen, dry or fresh fruits. You can also prepare some healthy snacks in advance, so when it’s time for you to snack, you can be sure you will make the best choice.

Still don’t see the point? Th ink about this, you move less at night, so your body needs less energy. Your body still uses energy while you are sleeping, but not as much as if you were awake and going about your

business during the day. Doesn’t it make sense? One last advice - don’t bring junk food in the house at all. You won’t eat it if you don’t have it. If you need more advice, go to www.mydietbody.com. You can also post your comments or questions, and remember: your body is your diet. So let’s make better choices.

It is always hard to change location, culture, languages, and good friends. Recently, I’ve been missing my old days. I just realized that recreating a life will never be easy. Naturally and socially, it has its pros and cons. I feel like it was yesterday, actually I was 19, when I published my first

book and it was sold out. In the same year, I dropped my first publishing company and went on my own to publish my second book “La Cour Blasée” that I went on tour with in a couple cities in Haiti. I was on tour in a plane to Jérémie, Haiti when I was reading my listing in Le Nouvelliste for Livres En Folie. I was kind of happy, but not the same way I would be at present moment. Right after I landed in Jérémie, a couple radio stations were calling me for interviews. Later that day I went to the Jérémie Alliance Française to visit the place where I was going to sign my book. I was greeted with such great hospitality. It feels good to be the subject of discussion. Continued on Page 17

I stayed for a little while in my hotel, met a couple officials, and then I went to visit a couple places. People over there are very friendly. The next day my ride came to

pick me u p for my book signing. When I arrived at the Alliance Française, I was speech-less. There were not enough chairs. People were standing waiting for me. The Alliance Française director had to move everything to the yard so people could breathe. I was also given a conference on Creole Poetry. Some people went home without the book because it sold out. There were too many people out to support me. On my way back to the hotel, I kept thanking God constantly for giving me the talent to be an artist and I cried. The next day I flew to Cayes, Haiti for my next book signing with the desire to stay for a couple more days, but I couldn’t violate my contract. All the cities are still living in me, but Jérémie takes a bigger space. 7 years later, talking about today, it is still hard for me to leave those kinds of good memories behind. I wish memories were tangible pictures, or

something one can relive.

Shopping is a big part of my life. Women like shopping. I have just been enlightened to a new shopping philosophy which is

this: you don’t have to spend a lot of money, or even leave the house, to find a great outfit. Shopping for new clothes isn’t always a suc-cess and can actually hurt more than it helps. It can drain your energy, but more important-ly, your wallet. For that reason, I slow down on shop-ping. I go back to my closet every day I’m go-ing out, match my old clothes and shoes, and come up with something classy and sexy. It is also good to save on shopping. You would never imagine that clothes you don’t wear for a long time can look fabulous on you and brand new again. Because the temperature is hot, I can enjoy spring for summer and I have chosen short clothes and bright colors. When it is hot, we definitely need to let our bodies breathe easily. Have fun, ladies!

Eventually, everybody came to know him as one of the best Hai-tian rappers. Th ere are no major events without mentioning his name. Th ey call him “lyrical assassin” because his lyrics can assassinate your ears and make you think deeply. He is not one of the “lucky ones”; his hard work paid for his success. Ladies

and gentlemen, I am happy to introduce our guest P-Jay! Th e JE Magazine team had a chance to sit down with P-Jay for only one question: What are 5 unexpected things on your next album?

P-Jay: First off , I want to thank the whole JE Magazine staff and all the fans that never stop supporting me. It’s a blessing to even get the chance to make a second album, so I also want to thank God for making all this pos-sible. I have to say I wasn’t expecting a question like this. I guess there won’t be any more surprises for the fans on this album, but 5 unexpected things would defi nitely be:

1- Me showing off my singing skills. Th ere are a few tracks where I sing and rap, just to bring more fl avors into the music, where you feel like it’s two dif-ferent P-JAYs on the song. I defi nitely enjoyed that.

Page 21: JE MAGAZINE MAY 2012

2-Th e topics on this album are very diff erent from what any other artist would probably write about, the fans will defi nitely connect to them, and feel like it’s their story. In a way they all connected to my personal life and that makes it even easier for people to connect with and ap-preciate the music.

3- Diff erently from “PlimPam” this album is so much more commercial. I feel like it’s good to make sure, as an artist, you always give out a message to the people. But then again, music is music, so there are more hyper songs on this album. Even if it’s an emotional song, the melo-dies are so powerful that you would still bump your head and tap your feet on the fl oor listening to them. Th ere are a lot of catchy songs on there.

4- MSB (Men Sak Best), which is the name of the next album, is 100% P-JAY. Meaning, in this album you really get to know me, on a personal level. It’s a more of a relaxed album, and I made sure that the music can reach every-body regardless of age, race, culture or whatever. You’ll still be able to vibe to it. I call it the PRESS PLAY album. Honestly, you can forget about the skip button, trust me.

5-Right now we are working on getting a very well known American rapper on this album. It may be a little too early to tell you who exactly it is going to be, but yes you can expect one of your favorite American rappers on this album. And I defi nitely want to thank PhatG for producing a crazy beat for this record.

And once again I want to thank JE Magazine for this interview, and thanks to all the fans. MSB (MEN SAK BEST) is coming this summer. Th anks.

JE: Th ank you P-Jay for sitting down with the JE Magazine to tell us about your second album coming out. We can’t wait to hear it and wish you the best of luck with all your future endeavors.

One of the most talented young musicians in town would be Kiki, pronounced (keekee). Th is young Kompas musician has decided not to drop his weapon. He understands clearly that music is a perpetual fi ght even for the most successful musicians. His style is straight from the Caribbean, particu-

larly Haiti. He’ll make you dance even when you feel it is not the right time. He is a complete musical package; he plays piano, drums, guitar, and he sings. Kiki’s music is a mixture of Kompas, Zook, and R&B with a bit of electro.

He is the only local Haitian artist who can fi ll a place when you just mention his name at a party. His infl uence is great-ly appreciated by everyone in town, mainly the Haitian community in Jacksonville. It is always a long way to go, but Kiki is not far from being a successful musician.

I can fi nd my inspiration everywhere, but I’d fi t better with a group of young students devoted to bring changes in this world. You bring changes when you help the less fortunate to be happy. It is always hard to look back, to remem-

ber where you came from, and to make decisions to put your birth place in your agenda. Th e college life isn’t easy [yeah... we know that for sure]. Finding time to help others has never been all that easy, but for someone I know it always has been. If you didn’t know, I was talking about Paul Prinvil. Let’s continue the conversa-tion…

JE: Welcome to JE Magazine! I’m so happy to have you here to converse about your association.PP: Th ank you Jean Edouard, for inviting me here.

JE: Can you please tell me a little bit about yourself?PP: Not really all that much to say; I’m a local Haitian American student wanting to do my part in serving our community and helping it to change for the better.

JE: Why have you chosen the name: Racine Kreyol?PP: Th e idea for the club’s name “Racine Kreyol” came from Toussaint L’Ouverture’s fa-mous quote about the tree of black liberty and how it will spring back from its ‘ROOTS’ for they are numerous and deep. We are those roots. We are Haiti’s life source and de-spite how Haiti may appear on the surface, as long as we stay connected and grounded

with our vision to change things, Haiti has hope.

JE: What is the objective of Racine Kreyol?PP: Th e objective of Rasine Kreyol is to educate ourselves and others about Haitian history and culture and to also change the perception that people have about Haiti. We are not so naïve to believe that we can undo decades of bad seed but if we can get young Haitian-Americans to develop a passion and a sense of responsibility to Haiti then, we’ve succeeded.

JE: What have you guys already accomplished?PP: We have accomplished a lot. Apart from the awareness - informational and fun-draising events we’ve put on in the community - there is a lot of background founda-tional work we’ve done on ourselves. For example, during the fall semesters we divide ourselves into informative groups and research diff erent topics concerning Haitian culture. We research interesting, integral parts of our culture that we don’t have a clear background and understanding on like “Langichat”, Tap-Tap’s and the signifi cance of “Neg Mawon”. Th ese are things that we want to know and learn about but were un-fortunately never taught. Personally, I believe our greatest accomplishment is getting Haitian-Americans reconnected with Haiti. It’s an invaluable resource for Haiti.

JE: Can anyone be a member or do you have to be a student at UNF?PP: Rasine Kreyol is open to literally everyone. In fact some of our most proactive members have never been students at UNF. Rasine Kreyol is more so a revolutionary movement then it is a culture club limited to just the University.

JE: What has Racine Kreyol been doing to benefi t the children in Haiti? PP: Recently we’ve developed a children’s scholarship fund to help further the educa-tion of children in Haiti. So far we have one child fully funded and we are continuing to strive for more. Our goal is to have 5 children fully funded by July 31st. We are com-mitted to working hard and doing whatever it takes to achieve that goal.

JE: Aft er you fi nish at UNF, what is the plan for Racine Kreyol?PP: Honestly I can’t really say I have a plan, more so aspirations. I would love to see Rasine Kreyol fl ourish beyond the borders of the UNF campus and spread to FSCJ, JU and even high schools. Impacting and provoking the Haitian youth to do something to make a diff erence in their individual communities.

JE: If someone wants to help and/or be a part of Racine Kreyol’s movement, what is the process?PP: You can get in contact with us via email and we will put you on our contact list and update you on all of our events and projects. ([email protected])

JE: Th ank you and good luck!PP: Th ank you so much for the opportunity.
