SPEAKERS SPEAKERS SESSIONS SESSIONS

PLENARY: CAROL READ

Teaching Life Skills to ChildrenIn this session, we will discuss the notion of life skills in relation to children who are learning English as part of their compulsory education. We will look at why life skills are important and how to integrate them into the learning process. A model for teaching life skills will be presented and we will explore a range of practical ideas to develop key areas such as intercultural competence, learner autonomy, values education, thinking skills, collaborative learning, and respect for diversity. The main focus will be on activities and procedures that are easy to adapt and implement in your own classroom.

3 TO 8-YEAR-OLDS: JETRO DE CHÂTEAU

Rhythm & rhyme: it’s story time!Children of all ages love stories and telling stories in the English classroom is a great way to mix fun and learning. In this session you will see how to make stories come alive and turn them into a valuable learning resource that both you and your pupils will enjoy.

3 TO 8-YEAR-OLDS: JOANNE RAMSDEN

Phonic funPhonics is a highly effective method we can use to teach children to read and write, but it can become repetitive if we’re not careful. Integrating fun and games to the systematic approach can keep children motivated. This practical session aims to show a variety of fun phonics activities which are easy to use, increase childrens’ enjoyment and help maximise their learning in the classroom.

8 TO 12-YEAR-OLDS: CAROL READ

Seven ways to promote creativity in the Primary classroomThe ability to make your classroom a place where creativity thrives is crucial in motivating and engaging young learners. This session looks at the conditions necessary for children to realize their creative potential and explores seven ways to promote creativity in the primary English classroom. Each way will be illustrated with a range of enjoyable and practical ideas, which can be used with learners of different ages and levels.

8 TO 12-YEAR-OLDS: ROD ALLISTER & ARANCHA OTERO

Coming to grips with the ‘flipped classroom’The ‘flipped classroom’ isn’t a new didactic model, but it’s one that is rapidly gaining ground. This workshop aims to present the ‘flipped’ format for teachers that are considering implementing it into their teaching program and help them to see the advantages of the format by working through some examples of ‘flipped’ activities.

6 TO 12 YEAR-OLDS: DANIELA CECIC

What´s in a problem? This session will focus on why it is important not to separate what we learn from how we learn it. Pupils need a clear purpose for learning and we as teachers should design activities that shift the power to them and encourage them to pose problems and generate questions that will involve them actively in the learning process. Working in this way, pupils’ interest is aroused and they are more likely to want to investigate solutions in a more active and engaged way. I will demonstrate activities that challenge pupils to think. I will also highlight the importance of immediate feedback and the role of the teacher as a coach and facilitator.

6 TO 12-YEAR-OLDS: ANA DEMITROFF

Beyond their worldIt’s not just about bringing their world into the classroom; teaching other subjects through another language offers a good opportunity to widen our pupils’ cultural understanding. The starting point is Social Science with tried and tested activities around songs, stories and a mini project about coins. These activities will ignite curiosity and challenge thinking skills.
