Define the Problem Math Words with Related Concepts and Principlesconsecutive 1st, 2nd, 3rd

1st integer2nd integer3rd integerSum add87 Total

They wanted to know the three numbers in a row that would add up to 87.

Math Strategy and Reasoning Math Steps with Supporting Proofs/Properties

Set up an equation.

Explanation: (They wanted to know…) (I knew…) (So I…) (I found…) Use appropriate mathematical terminology!!!They wanted to know the three numbers in a row that would add up to 87. I knew there were three numbers in a row that would add up to 87. I knew consecutive meant one after another and integer is a number. I defined the variable x as the first, smallest, consecutive number, x + 1 as the second number because it is one away from x, and x + 2 as the third consecutive number. I alsoknew sum meant add and 87 was the total. So I set up the equation x + (x+1) = (x+2) = 87 to represent the three consecutive integers equaling 87. I then used the associative property of addition to rearrange the variables and the numbers to get the new equation (x + x + x) + (1 +2). I solved for parenthesis and got three of the x’s equaling 3x and 1 + 2 equaling 3 to get the new equation 3x + 3 = 87. I used the opposite of addition, the subtraction property of equality, to get rid of 3 by subtracting it on both sides to get 3x = 84. I then did the opposite of multiplication, using the division property of equality to get rid of the 3 on both sides to get x = 28. I substituted for x in the equation x + 1 and got 28 + 1 = 29, then substituted x for 28 in the last equation x + 2 to get 28 + 2 + 30. I found the three consecutive numbers were 28, 29, and 30.
