What is soon to come for France

Le Pen(left) and Macron (right)

As one of the most controversial

french elections near to a close this

week with both candidates still going

strong. We should take the time to

know both candidates and what their

presidential goals are.

Starting off we have Emmanuel

Macron, the youngest in this race. He

described himself as neither left nor

right and still wants France to be in

the EU. Macron wants to modernize

the French government by

implementing new reforms.

Recently however the party had

received a huge blow due to recent

hackings possibly done by russian

hackers. Despite this however,this

Sunday Macron won 66.1% of the

French vote making him the youngest

president in the history of France.

The candidate on the opposition is

Marine Le Pen. Daughter to the former

president of the controversial National

Front,Jean Marie Le Pen. Le Pen was

also president of the NF since 2011

working to rebuild the history of the

group.

She is a nationalist and would prioritize

National interests and leaving the

eurozone. Her party will also focus on

security and immigration. She is

controversial for some of the laws she

proposed on religion when she would be

elected and how she wants to make

friendly ties with Russia. This could be

the reason for the recent hacks against

Macron. During the first round she

came in first place and it seemed like

she had a good lead until Sunday when

Macron won nearly 70% of the vote.

Nigerian Girls are Freed International news

82 Chibok girls from the town of Chibok Nigeria are freed after recent negotiations

By:Sean Eddings Edited by Daniel Armendariz

Recently, on May 6, the president

of Nigeria announced that

“negotiations to release more

Chibok girls yielded results.” After

three years, 82 of of the 276

Chibok girls kidnapped by Boko

Haram have been recently released

(others have been released earlier

than this particular group) . The

girls were released after lengthy

negotiations with Boko Haram,

then they decided to release 82

Chibok girls in exchange for some

Boko Haram suspects held by the

Nigerian authorities.

One mother of one of the

girls kidnapped by Boko

Haram said, “I am very,

very excited with this

development. I cannot even

sleep tonight.”.The girls are

currently being transported to

the Nigerian capital of Abuja

to meet with the president,

and to be reunited with their

families. Sadly though, over

100 Chibok girls still remain

with the Boko Haram

terrorist group and some may

have been sold to

neighboring African

countries as slaves.

Both beginning and advanced band were

taught by Ms. Dunne who also guided them during

the concert. Mr. Fahrenbach taught chorus the

songs and was present in the concert as well. Both

bands, chorus, Ms. Smith’s class, and the music

teachers all put in effort to make sure the concert

was great.

Chloe Smith, who is part of Disney’s chorus

and sang in the concert, said, “Everyone in this

show worked really hard and it was amazing. I’m

so glad everything came together nicely and

resulted in an amazing show.” Disney’s spring

concert definitely lifted everyone’s spirits and made

them excited for spring.

Spring Maps Approach

How can you prepare?

In May of 2017, Spring Maps steadily approach at Walt

Disney Magnet School. The students at the school also take Fall

and Winter Maps which are extremely important for the sixth and

seventh graders.

The race for spots in early admission high schools is on and

the competition is tight. The requirements for some high schools,

they require a student to have at least a 90 percentile score.

For gifted students the score truly matters as anything lower

that a 90 percentile score will put you on probation. Continue to

decline and you will be kicked out of the program.

According to the teachers at Disney, the way you can

improve your Map score is to work in your target area on several

academic websites such as IXL and Prepdog.

These academic websites can help you with things in your

‘target area’, the area which you need a little help in. By knowing

what your ‘target area’ can truly help because you are then able

to work on things students know they need help with, which can

almost guarantee a higher Map score. Continued on Page 9

Famous artists come to visit!

Famous artists like Cellist Yo-Yo Ma,Judson

and Joyce Green Creative Consultant , and

players from the Chicago orchestra have come

to Walt Disney magnet school in the past few

weeks to happily entertain students. Many but

not all students see these shows. Each show

also has a educative twist to it. Students will

spend one hour at these shows listening to the

artists backstories and learning life lessons, all

while listening to their music.

A student, who wished to remain anonymous

said,“The Map test is a pretty important part of the

year at Disney. However, I do find that what my

teacher said was right and that the only way you

can improve is to use study websites. Even though

stressful, the Maps aren't too bad now that I think

about it. I just wished the teachers would give us

at least an hour a week to go on these academic

websites that could help us (students), a better

score which is what we all want.”

Teachers also recommend that students rest

well and eat a good breakfast the day before.

So good luck and take your time on the test!

Disney Performs Spring Concert Starting Spring Off with Music

By Bushra Lat

On Wednesday, May 10, 2017, Walt Disney Magnet

School’s very own chorus, band, and music teachers put

together a spring concert in the school’s CAC. Disney

has a winter and spring concert every year to celebrate

the season, however this year’s spring concert was

special because many of the performances were

dedicated to Mrs. Francine who worked at the school

but, unfortunately, recently passed away.

The concert started with beginner’s band playing

songs on instruments such as the trumpet, flute, and

xylophone. After that Ms. Smith’s class performed a

dance dedicated to Mrs. Francine. Then advanced band

played some songs. Finally, chorus sang a few songs

such as “To Get it Right”, “Lava”, “Huntos”, and “Hello

Goodbye”. The song Lava was also dedicated to Mrs.

Francine.

Students signing petition

Disney Student Takes Charge

Petition Made By:Ianece Coleman

As Walt Disney tightens the rules and restrictions on what’s allowed at school more and more students are finding the new rules pointless and one student took charge in trying to get the rules repealed. Abike Sholeye, a 7th grader in class 311, created a petition on Monday May 8, 2017. She walked around the lunchroom and got signatures from her peers and ended up with a total of 11 signatures, including her own, and plans on getting many more. On Monday I asked Abike why she felt the need

Continued on pg.12

to create a petition and she said “ I created this petition because these new rules are stupid. Fidget spinners and water bottle flipping are kind of understandable but the actual drinking of water being banned is absolutely ridiculous!” This petition is slowing but surely gaining popularity it is just a matter of time before it goes from the third floor to the entire school.

Eventually this petition will make it’s way to the head of the school, to Dr.Hagstrom.

Most of our concerns are about our

grades, our MAP scores, which high

school we’ll go to. But all of a

sudden, the day will come where

you have to pick your job. It can be

a difficult process, unless somebody

helps you. And that’s where career

day comes in.

Career day is a one hour

presentation where a selected

person comes in and talks about

their job. They’ll give you an insight

of what their life is like as that

occupant, and at the the end of the

presentation you can ask questions,

which will gladly be answered. So

come down to the CAC on Friday,

May 12th, at Walt Disney Magnet

School, to discover a new career.

School Lunch Items Are Bad? By:Shiloh Chatham

Are School lunch items really that

bad at disney? Today we will be

looking at the cps “Three Cheese

Wraps”. Many people have said bad

things about the Three Cheese Wraps

but they are actually pretty healthy.

They don’t have a very high fat

percentage, and not very high in

calories.

Overall the fruits can be better. The

coolers that they put them in are

efficient. Although the fruits aren’t

very well kept. Students say that

whenever they get the apple slices,

they are soggy and old. The grapes

are also squishy, oranges are fine,

apples are fine and bananas are as

well.

What did a few students think about

the food,”i think the fruit is kept in

bad conditions with water to keep it

the way it should be and not drying

out so all you end up getting from the

fruit is water.” Which is what Joelie

Simkins said when I asked about the

fruit. “And the pears I have seen that

look like they have fallen of the back

of a truck.” Said by Sophia in reply

of the same question. As you can see,

not many students like the food

choices. Allison said this to add,”ohh

the apple slices are soggy and they

like fall apart”. So the fruit is not

very firm and the lunch is actually

not that unhealthy.

Disney Concert Kicks Off Spring!

On Wednesday, May 10, 2017, a dedicated group of Disney students gathered in the Disney CAC to put on a breathtaking show. The concert started at precisely 9:30 am. Gathered were singers, dancers, and beginning and advanced level musicians. The incredible chorus is led by Mr. Fahrenbach, Disney’s music technology teacher. Both advanced and beginning bands are led by Ms. Dunne, Disney’s music teacher. The second grade dancers are led by the Disney dance teacher, Ms. Smith.

Kicking off the fabulous show was beginning band, playing a variety of classic medleys such as Twinkle Twinkle. These are students with little to no experience, so just getting them to play a note is incredible. But they did so much more than just play a note, they were able to come out with entire pieces. If these students choose to participate in band next year, they will be moved to advanced band where they will be given much more of a challenge.

Following we had the advanced band with members with over one year of experience. They played music from around the world, delighting us with multiple songs. Next we had Ms. Smith’s second graders dancing to contemporary music. To wrap up this fabulous spring concert the chorus dazzled us with songs from Glee, Inside Out, and songs of other cultures. Student Ilma Sarajlic says, “It was very entertaining to hear!” All in all the spring concert was absolutely fabulous, a true representation of the talent at Disney.

Three eighth graders

explain the high school

An upcoming event for pod 310 would be a

visit from three eighth graders (whose

names are not mentioned) to talk about

their high school process experience. Ms.

about these eighth graders and what they’re

going to be sharing. One of them has worked

really hard to get into the school they

wanted, and got in. Another student didn’t

work as hard as the others, and didn’t end

up getting into their top choice. The final

student presenting realized last minute

what they needed to do, and worked

extremely hard to get into their choice of

high school. This is only a portion of what

they will be talking about. The sixth

Field Day Controversy

Today’s Date 5/12/17

Field Day a special day dedicated to

relaxation and fun until students hear that

they may not have this day at all! Disney

students in pod 310 recently found out that

they may have to give up field day for a

field trip. No fear some new news brought

to light will assure you that the

administration has been doing something

about it. As soon as the news was delivered

,class 311 started to stir wondering if we

would have to chose or would we get both.

Well recent reports from teacher Ms.Herceg

has given us a clue as to what will come.

It looks like the third floor staff is

trying to reschedule our field day. This

means we will end up getting both. Now we

have even more things to look forward to a

field trip and a field day. This is not for

sure though so I know pod 310 will be

keeping our fingers crossed as we continue

to wait for more news to roll in. Until

then it looks like this conundrum will

result in a happing ending for everyone.

What will happen when

students favorite day clashes

with upcoming field trip

By :Lucy Coulter

“Even though I love field trips I feel like it

is interfering with our beloved field day.

Field day is a very important day to me because

I get to spend time with my friends without a

care in the world”-Aisya Jennrich,13,7th grade

“I think that this is

unfair. Field day is

the only day of the

year us kids get to

have a whole day of fun

and not learn anything.

Now that we have a

field trip on that day

it ruins the whole idea

of field day”-Chloe

Smith,13,7th grade

Trump’s New Travel Ban- Heard 5/8/17 By: Aisya Jennrich, Chloe Smith, Lucy Coulter, and Daniel Butz

Whether its because of

religion, or because of

racial discrimination,

Trump has decided to

create a discriminatory

executive ban in 2017.

This new executive order

only applies to

foreigners without a valid

visa. The U.S

administration claims

this is not a Muslim ban,

but protesters strongly

disagree. Challengers to

the law state that Trump

has taken his executive

win too extreme with

banning nearly entire

countries.

This new ban contains central

elements of the old one Trump

tried to pass, cutting the

number of how many refugees

can come into the U.S. This

executive order blocks citizens

of seven predominant Muslim

countries from entering the

U.S.

Monday’s Girl Soccer Game Disney vs. Intrinsic

Disney girl soccer team walked in on Tuesday

monday morning with a devastating loss against

Intrinsic on Monday evening at 5:30 pm.

The soccer game started around 5:30 on Monday

evening. Disney’s soccer team was missing two people

at the start of the game. Although Disney didn’t have

the stronger lead at the start of the game because of

their missing players and the opposing team

communication, Disney managed to score a goal. In the

end, the game’s score was 1-5 and the one goal that was

shot was by Alana an eighth grader on the soccer team.

But in the video the woman who was

told this said she was actually born

in the country in which the woman

replied with “Oh you were” then

telling the muslim woman that Obama

Going Deeper Into the Mind of Our Teacher Written by

Nicole Beaubien, Grace Lothian, Olivia Parenteau, Isaac Oladapo

Insert war battle scene photo here

Teachers may inform you about the lives of other people, but

do they ever teach you about their own?

Today we talked with Mrs. Papadakis on her views of her job.

We asked specifically why she chose this job. She said that she

chose this profession for “June, July, and August”, in other words,

summers off!

Of course, there must be something else that makes her

inclined to teach. She told us that her favorite part of her job was

figuring out different ways to educate us, as technology changes

and the years advance.

Mrs. Papadakis’ famous cup of

Dunkin Donuts coffee, needed every

morning so she has the energy to teach.

“There’s more than one solution to a problem.”

What we’re learning now:

- We are learning about Anne

Frank’s Diary

- We are learning about Hamilton

and Jefferson’s opposing sides

M

We all hate paperwork, and Mrs. Papadakis is no

exception. It can take away time that she would rather spend

teaching her students. And even after retirement, aside from

traveling, she intends to keep enriching young minds and

tutor children.

Wendy Ng. This is the most exemplary student that she

has had. “Drase and I loved that girl,” she said.

She has told us that one thing that you should take away from

her class is that there is always more than one solution to a

problem. She never wants her students to give up.

Letters to the Editor regarding the ban of slime, water bottles, bottle flipping, and fidget spinners: Daniel Armendariz- “I personally think that this ban is just stupid so I 100% agree with your article. This is just a way for the school to ruin our lives even more! They have to kill everything that is fun for us because they can. What can we do? Nothing! We are taught to never challenge because it’s ‘rude’ but this ain't adding up here. They give the worst reasons like it isn't bad enough already. So what? They tell us we can't drink water, as if they don't care I am human, I need it to live! Punish me for being human, I don't care. Thank you for writing this article, I hope it raises awareness and actually starts something positive. Keep up the good work!”

It’s not like the teachers don’t enjoy these items, source Alondra Maya tells us a fifth-grade teacher was caught playing with a fidget spinner after taking it from a student.

Homework: Necessary or Not? Editorial by Maya Matusaitis

People think very differently when it comes to homework. Some people think it’s super important and necessary, and that we should get a ton each day. Others think it’s a waste of time, not necessary, and that it cuts into their afternoon schedule. What do I think? Personally, I think both. I think that we should get homework each day, but it should be a reasonable amount.

I think that getting homework each day is important and necessary. Homework helps you review what you learned that day, and can help you prepare for tests. For example, NWEA MAP tests are coming up. Lots of the things that we are learning in math and writing will be on our MAP tests, so it’s good to practice the topic everyday. Getting homework every day also lets us go over the topic again so we won’t forget it. Homework definitely helps us improve on the things that we learned that day, and getting a few questions on the topic each day isn’t too bad.

Page 54: Disney Times - Welcome To Mrs. Urbinati's Websitemrsurbinati.weebly.com/uploads/2/5/7/1/25710473/311_newspaper_… · DISNEY TIMES Www.fakelink.com THE WORLD’S FAVOURITE NEWSPAPER

On the other hand, homework can be a waste of time. Sometimes we, students, get piles of homework everyday and can take us hours to

complete. At times the homework isn’t even on the topic that we learned that day, and is about some random topic we haven’t even learned yet!

Getting loads of homework each day can definitely take hours to do especially if we have activities after school. Instead of doing my homework

for an hour all at a time, I have to do some of it, go to my activity, then come home late with a few hours left to do. A few questions a day is okay,

but sometimes we get pages and pages, which is not necessary.

Page 55: Disney Times - Welcome To Mrs. Urbinati's Websitemrsurbinati.weebly.com/uploads/2/5/7/1/25710473/311_newspaper_… · DISNEY TIMES Www.fakelink.com THE WORLD’S FAVOURITE NEWSPAPER

Letters to the Editor

Violet Webber, 773-000-000, [email protected]: I agree that we should get homework as long as it’s reasonable amounts. However, I don't think that we should have homework every night. I remember having nights that I have no homework which I think is beneficial but also nights that I am working until around midnight. We get pages in every subject, projects, busy work, and more.

As for unrelated homework, in fifth grade, we got a math. It was something none of us knew or understood and that parents hadn’t ever seen. Some of us tried to tell our teacher and she said: “Do it and stop arguing”. We did the sheet and she said we should've done it “her way” instead. I ended up getting a C after three tries. Teachers should give homework that is understandable and beneficial.

I understand the need for homework since it helps us review subjects, but if we don't finish classwork, we shouldn't have it for homework. Some teachers give assignments with no purpose such as things we color and put together. I understand these as optional study tools, but as homework?

On top of homework, we get projects. These projects are done as homework since we don't get class time. We are expected to put hours into these projects, but when it's one a.m., I’m not doing that. Some of these projects don't even help us understand the curriculum we are learning.

Overall I just think we should have a couple assignments a night that will help us learn.
