Instructions

These activities are designed to be used with Cuisenaire® Rods. Hand2mindoffers extensive assortment of Cuisenaire rods to suit a variety of needs.

Play: Each activity is an opportunity to allow the child to see all the ways that you can partition a number. This packet covers numbers 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. There is exactly enough spaces for the child to exhaust all the ways to partition each number. Allow the child to explore building numbers freely.

Discover: After building with the rods have the student articulate what he/she observes orally.

Learn: Considering the context of what the student has observed, ask questions to stretch the student’s observation. “What patterns do you see? Why did you use those rods? What if you use only red rods?” Permit the student to stretch themselves as well by having them consider what they could do differently.

Play: Offer another opportunity for the student to interact and build upon their new observation.

Discover: This process continually repeats. In the beginning, observation is an oral process for the student. Model their discoveries using letters (w + r = g)* recording them on the discoveries page or modeling them on the board. Once the student is orally fluent in their observations, they will begin to make their own written observations using letters to represent the colors of the rod just as it has been modeled to them.

*Common lettering for rods: w=white, r=red, g=light green, p=purple, y=yellow, d=dark green, k=black, t=tan/brown, b=blue, o=orange.

The student will fill out each line using rods. They will see which rods fit and don’t fit. They also will notice which combination of rods fit and don’t fit. Without even giving a quantitative value to the rods, a student will begin to grasp the relationship each rod has with one another.

A student with more experience working with rods will begin to see that they can reverse the order of the rods to create a new partition. An even more experienced student will begin to organize the arrangement so as to demonstrate a pattern in the variety of ways the number can be partitioned.

This exercise is very important for later work in addition, subtraction, fractions, multiplication, division and recognition of many mathematical properties. Through time, it also helps students to develop organized thoughts. The student should return to this exercise often and be encouraged to express his/her discoveries.
