The University

LUISS Libera Università Internazionale degli Studi Sociali Guido Carli traces its origins back to the transformation of a pre-existing Roman institution, Università Pro Deo, founded in 1966. In 1974, a group of businessmen led by Umberto Agnelli decided to invest people and money in an innovative project for the education and training of a managerial class. The University adopted a new educational model along the lines of those found in the leading international universities.

LUISS Guido Carli is a private Italian university located in the heart of Rome. The University aims to achieve the highest levels of distinction in the development and transmission of scientific, technological, and classical knowledge and understanding. It is committed to promoting and organizing research activities, educating both culturally and professionally, and contributing with the transfer of innovation.

Recognized for academic excellence, LUISS Guido Carli is a dynamic university with highly selective admissions. The University helps talented students pursue academic achievements and prepares them for positions of leadership. It has trained world-class leaders sensitive to the values of market culture and to the rules of a modern democracy, and has made important academic contributions in the fields of economics, law and political science.

LUISS Guido Carli offers an advanced education model oriented to train and instil students with the flexibility necessary to become the leading actors of their future. ▌The International Rela In 1988, from the first year of participation in the Erasmus Programme, LUISS Guido Carli University set up an International Relations Office for student mobility to take care of all aspects of student mobility, and an Academic Commission foaCoorganization of all mobility activities. Inprogrammes Erasmus and Socrates, through which we have established fruitful co-operation links with more than ninety European Institutions. The International Relations Office promotes student exchanges within the LLP Erasmus Programme as well as through bilateral agreements with non-European Universities. The office is responsible for all aspects concerning student mobility in all faculties. All procedures are based on the ECTS system (European Community Course Credit Transfer System).

Incoming students The first source of information for incoming students is the LUISS web site: information on curricula, the ECTS brochures, general information, frequently asked questions, procedures and steps to take before the exchange. Then the students should contact the home university coordinator for the detailed documents received by LUISS such as, procedures for the on-line application, further information on accommodation, on the intensive Italian language course, etc..

Once the incoming students have been nominated and the application documents have been received, the International Office sends all students an acceptance letter and practical information. The students also receive support via e-mail before arrival.

Accommodation is guaranteed to all students that apply by the deadline. A private organization takes care of housing matters for LUISS. When incoming students arrive, they are offered orientation sessions and receive an information package. Registration procedures, course selection and learning agreements are prepared and completed with the assistance of the International Relations Office. During their period of study at LUISS, guest students receive face-to-face support and advice when needed. LUISS organizes an intensive Italian language and culture course in September and regular courses in both semesters, for exchange students. They are free of charge for the students. A number of activities are organized to help integration of the international students with the cooperation of the student associations. Incoming students are offered the same facilities and services as local students, such as: sports, a university dining hall, a medical doctor, IT and e-mail, a library, a bookstore, cultural events, a university radio, Erasmus tutoring, etc.. At the end of each examination period the International Relations Office takes care of collecting the transcripts of records from the Student Office in due time. The transcripts of records are sent to the students and International Coordinators of the home Universities. Erasmus Tutors Both outgoing and incoming students are also supported by three Erasmus Tutors, one for each Faculty. The Tutors mainly take care of academic aspects and problems and are available for the whole academic year. They are chosen among our young graduates that spend a period abroad, under the Erasmus programme, in the previous years. Student evaluation of the exchange All aspects of mobility are continuously monitored. At the end of the periods of study outgoing students write a report on their experience while incoming students complete an evaluation questionnaire at the end of the exchange. These documents are read by the staff of the International Relations Office and the members of the Academic Commission in order to check and increase the quality standard of the exchanges.

▌Exchange procedures for incoming students Who can apply First of all, you should be aware of the fact that the International Relations Office of LUISS Guido Carli will accept exchange students only under the LLP Erasmus Programme or any other exchange agreement.

Other students can only apply for corsi singoli and have to pay a fee for each course. At the end of the period of study they will receive a transcript of records for the exams taken. For corsi singoli registration is made through Segreteria Studenti (Student Office) of LUISS. The steps you should take and things you should know Contact the International Coordinator at your Home University. Each sending Institution is responsible for the selection of students. If you have been selected for a period of study at LUISS as an exchange student, you should ask the coordinator of your University for the following LUISS information and application documents: The procedures for the on-line application. The username and the password. The 2009-2010 academic calendar. The 2009-2010 fact sheets and Contacts of the International Relations Office. Information on how to get accommodation at LUISS and the application form. Information on the intensive Italian course and the Italian test. We manage all relevant information through partner Institutions and do not usually send additional packages to the students selected for the exchange. Read the instructions carefully before you apply. Complete the documents, follow the instructions and meet the deadlines. Be aware of our deadlines Search our web site from time to time: pages are updated when new information is available. Check the web pages of LUISS Professors (under Cattedre on line) for detailed information about courses. Remember, the main language of instruction is Italian. Your level should be adequate.

LUISS Guido Carli offers an intensive Italian language course, held in September, and courses during both semesters (3 hours per week). The courses are at two levels, intermediate and advanced. No provision is made for beginners. At the end of the courses, the students who have complied with the requirements, will receive a certificate (with grades and ECTS credits) for the work done. The courses are only open to Erasmus and Exchange students coming from partner Universities and they are free of charge.

If you feel your level is not sufficient, take a summer course before coming to LUISS for the intensive Italian language course held in September.

At LUISS the main language of instruction is Italian but some single courses in English are offered each year. Moreover, an increasing number of degree programs and courses are held in English.

The following degree programs are entirely taught in English:

• Bachelor's Degree Program in Economics and Business • Master's Degree Program in General Management • First Level Master's Degree Program in Economics • First Level Master's Degree Program in Management, Consulting and ERP • First Level Master's Degree Program in European Studies

The LUISS Law Faculty also offers a few courses in English each academic year.

From the academic year 2009-2010, all Erasmus and Exchange students will be allowed to attend the courses in English, according to their level of study, faculty, academic background and English language proficiency. Timing By February of every academic year, we send all our partners updated materials, application procedures and documents for exchange students. The deadline is May 31 every year for receiving the LUISS application form. All other deadlines change slightly from year to year.

Exchange students will receive an acceptance letter and practical information in June.

▌The quality of mobility and the international dimension The International Relations Office for student mobility is a centralized structure from the very beginning of the Programme. It takes care of student exchanges for all Faculties of LUISS Guido Carli. The Erasmus and Exchange programmes have had a deep and stimulating impact on the whole University. They have played an important role in enhancing the International dimension of the institution. LUISS boasts distinguished tradition in education and is now enjoying a time of considerable growth and positive change in an increasingly open international dimension. It provides the highest quality education and gives an international scope to the study of social sciences. The use of the ECTS system has improved the transparency and clarity of student qualifications. The procedures have been extended to the other international exchanges and the system has been useful to build programmes in partnership with other universities. The increasing number of incoming students have encouraged the production of information materials in English and the development of a web site in English, not only of the pages related to the International Relations Office. Some year ago LUISS started to offer a few courses in English in order to attract more international and Erasmus students. The university today offers full degree programmes in English at all levels.

The LUISS Rector is committed to keeping LUISS a first-rate University and to improving its results, especially at an international level, by intensifying world-wide collaborations, strengthening post-graduate programs, expanding research opportunities, recruiting new faculty all over the international arena, tailoring our curricula to the evolving needs of the global scenario.

The organization of the mobility takes place one year in advance. All the information materials in English, for partner Universities, are updated and sent to the Institutions many months before the student exchanges take place. The LUISS International Relations Office has standardized and simplified all the procedures for the Erasmus students. All internal administrative procedures are channelled through the International Relations Office. Many aspects are taken care of automatically by the offices involved, such as course enrolment and registration for the exams. Erasmus students receive materials, information and support well before arrival. Accommodation is guaranteed to all Erasmus students that apply by the deadline. After arrival of the students, orientation sessions, visits of the campuses and social activities are organized. The students receive an information package (in English and Italian), the university badge and the LUISS e-mail. The first period of an exchange abroad is difficult for many students. Most of the practical matters seem a major problem and can become an obstacle. At their arrival, students do not know the Country and often do not speak the language very well. They may have cultural shock

14

Page 15: LUISS Guido Carli University - Rome · LUISS Guido Carli University - Rome The University ... Chairman, Department of History and Political Scie Dario Antiseri T The University has

problems feel home sick. Moreover, they do not know the Italian university system and the procedures and rules of the host university. For these reasons, the staff of the International Relations Office takes great care of each student with a face-to-face counselling and support and does the best to make them feel at home, also thanks to the help of the student associations. Erasmus students receive support and advice for practical and academic problems during the whole period of study and whenever needed. Student visiting hours are every day from Monday to Friday and Tuesdays and Thursdays also in the afternoon.

The enthusiasm that staff and faculty put into what they do and the attention we place in assisting outgoing and incoming students is a quality and strength we offer.

Studying at LUISS means belonging to a dynamic and international community which shares interests, passions and experience. University lifestyle is designed to promote integration among students, as well as active participation and direct relations with professors.
