. . . Rev. Fr. Stepanos Doudoukjian

Wow, what an exciting fall line-up we have at St. Peter Armenian Church! As you browse through this issue of the Loosaper, please note all the interesting spiritual and cultural events we are offering to the Armenian community.

My main goal as a parish priest is to look after the spiritual welfare of our people. Join us for the many opportunities that are provided for faith development and growth. As you do so, you will learn more about the teachings of the Armenian Church and grow in faith of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

If you ever want to talk with me about your faith journey, or anything else for that matter, just let me know and I’d be honored to chat with you!

Fr. Stepanos

‘50 is a Good Number’ (Spiritual message shared on August 19, 2015 via e-mail and Facebook.)

I made sure I spent some time outdoors checking out the Perseid meteor shower. In a four-hour span, I saw 50 different meteors, shooting stars, flashes, double tails, etc. Not only was it a beautiful and peaceful experience, but indeed a spiritual one as well. Throughout the spectacular light show, my mind kept thinking of Psalm 148--

Praise the Lord from the heavens; praise him in the heights!

Praise him, sun and moon; praise him, all you shining stars!

Praise him, you highest heavens, and you waters above the heavens!

The stars in the sky were truly praising God! I felt a closeness to the universe like never before. The stars were giving thanks to our God and displaying their natural talents. I know, one will say it is a simple scientific definition as to why the Perseid meteor shower takes place, but God is the force, inertia and power that fuels the universe(s). And the response from the stars is to give praise back to our Creator. During the meteor shower, the stars were surely letting their "light shine before mankind." Sounds similar to what our response should be to God.

Jesus instructs us to shine before others…

We read in Matthew 5:14-16, “You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven. "

As I sat outside and enjoyed the light show, I pondered the following...

How do we give glory to God? In what ways do our lights shine before others? Do our actions encourage others to give thanks to God?

The Perseid meteor shower gave me food for thought and inspired me to give glory, thanks and praise to God, our Heavenly Father. So after four hours of looking up and seeing my 50th shooting star, I decided to call it a night. What a true blessing I received that evening!

Parish Council Message

We say it every year, but once again it is hard to believe that summer has come and gone. Summer is typically a quieter time at church, but “quiet” should never be confused with being “not busy.”

First, let me recap some of the more major projects that have been completed:

• The four flat roofs were rebuilt from the bottom up, as well as having all the stained glass windows recaulked. This put an end to years of temporary fixes.

• The sanctuary was painted and new venting was added. All lighting in the sanctuary was replaced with LED lights, and all the ceiling woodwork was conditioned and protected with Minwax.

• The parking lot lights were all repaired and upgraded with LED lights.

Now, back to the “quiet” summer projects and events:

• All the carpeting throughout the church was professionally cleaned and the vestibule area treated with Scotchguard.

• The leak in the baptismal font was finally repaired with the help of Frenchie and Murat Kasparian. This was a major fix, due to having to disassemble the marble enclosure to gain access to the plumbing.

• Our extremely successful Festival was followed by two subsequent impromptu barbecues.

• The Knights and Daughters of Vartan were the first to “rent” the new Postoian Pavilion for their annual picnic on August 23. This being their most successful picnic in recent memory.

• The 5th Annual Men’s Fellowship Evening held on September 24 also benefited from the pavilion.

With the recent installation of lighting, the pavilion project is now finished and completely paid for. I offer a very special thank you to Bob Bedian who served as project foreman and oversaw every detail from the early development to its final completion. The Postoian Pavilion represents a turning point for church community and the unlimited possibilities for the future.

The improvements and repairs listed above mean that the St. Peter Armenian Church community can look forward to a brighter future. With that in mind, the Parish Council has compiled and published a revised Wish List in the issue of Loosaper.

On behalf of the Parish Council and the entire church community, I offer our best wishes and prayers to Dn. Hrant & Alice Bardakjian as they soon head to Indiana to move closer to their family. As for me, the church service will not be the same without Dn. Hrant who has humbly dedicated his life to serving on the altar for as long as I can remember. They will be missed as part of our church family and may God continue to bless them every day of their lives. Pari djanabar!

Church Organization News

Sunday School & Adult Christian EducationSunday School & Adult Christian EducationSunday School & Adult Christian EducationSunday School & Adult Christian Education

Why? WHY? Why? Why should we all “Think Orange” and focus on FAMILY MINISTRY? Here’s a little review from last year as we will continue to carry the theme of “Think Orange” into our 2015-16 school year:

The Church is yellow; The Family is red. Orange, a secondary color, is what red and yellow, primary colors, can do when they mix. Orange is a vibrant, energetic, healthy color. Families and the Church are each working hard to build faith in our children. However, we must combine and synchronize our individual efforts. If you paint with only red, you will get what only red can create; if you paint with only yellow, you get what only yellow can create. Painting with both red and yellow simultaneously, you get new possibilities, fresh solutions and vibrant outcomes! So imagine the possibilities when Church (yellow) and Family (red) combine?

Together, we can raise vibrant, energetic, healthy children with a strong faith foundation that will ultimately help them navigate life. Studies show how attending Church as a family increases average life expectancy by eight years; reduces a child’s use and risk from alcohol, tobacco and drugs; improves a child’s attitude at school and increases their school participation; reduces their risk for committing a crime; and so much more. Also by attending Church as a family, it statistically improves the odds that children will lead an active church life in their adult years. Eighty-eight percent of students start moving away from the Christian church after graduation. Though the same studies show that, when students are grounded in both FAITH and FAMILY, the percentage of those falling away from the church drops to less than four percent. That is AMAZING and proves that regular Family Worship is essential for the future of our Church as well.

BUT HOW? Simple! As mentioned, our goal is to create an ORANGE community of faithful. We must do this TOGETHER. There are numerous more studies, in addition to what was mentioned above, showing the long-term benefits of families attending Church together – FAMILY WORSHIP. This is what Christ intended — to break bread, communion, together each and every time the Divine Liturgy is celebrated. Though this cannot be accomplished by holding Sunday School classes at the same time the Badarak is being celebrated. And, ongoing Christian Education for all ages is essential throughout every stage of life. It is our responsibility to be examples for our children. Here are ten (10) reasons for FAMILY WORSHIP:

#1 God has given parents the primary responsibility for spiritually training their children.

#2 No one is better or more qualified to spiritually train children than their parents.

#3 Worship at church presents a model for family worship at home. It trains parents and children in what worship is and how to worship God.

#4 Children need to see their parents participate in worship and experience that worship with them.

#5 The most influential moments in a child’s life are often not the moments that parents program but the moments that just happen. Worship opportunities are filled with these moments.

#6 Parents’ understanding of worship, attention to worship, participation in worship and benefit from worship is increased as role models for their children in worship.

#7 Throughout the Old Testament, God trained Israel to worship appropriately, giving them direction for accepted and rejected worship. Parents should also train their children to appropriately worship God. Effective training involves instruction and demonstration.

#8 Worshipping with children helps parents and children understand that the worship time is not for parents to relax or children to have fun but to focus on God.

Page 9: LOVSAPYR - stpeterarmenianchurch.com...LOVSAPYR LOOSAPER Sovrp Bydros Ha3asdanya3x Ygy.yxi ST.P ETER A RMENIAN C HURCH 100 T ROY-SCHENECTADY R OAD, PO B OX 196, W ATERVLIET, NY 12189

#9 Worship is always a challenge, both to adults and children. Children do not infringe on a parent’s worship experience but encourage a parent’s worship and help a parent fulfill his or her divine responsibilities.

#10 Children are the “greatest” in God’s kingdom. They bring elements to worship that adults need to see, hear and experience.

St. Peter Adult FellowshipSt. Peter Adult FellowshipSt. Peter Adult FellowshipSt. Peter Adult Fellowship

On September 16, about 20 persons attended the celebration of the 21st Anniversary of the St. Peter Adult Fellowship at the Century House, Latham. We feasted on a variety of wonderful foods prepared especially for this celebration. David Quinones, current chair and a member of the founding committee, offered the toast. Others among that original committee included Lucy Morton and Russ & Sandy Kilidjian as well as those who were sadly unable to join us that day: Yn. Zabel Gdanian, Lucy Krikorian, Sarah Hrachian, Beatrice Arzoumanian, Fay Talarico, and Anna Pascazio. David shared with us the programs for our upcoming activities (see below).

On Wednesday, October 7, the luncheon meeting featured Fr. Stepanos demonstrating his incomparable rendition of “Making the Pizza,” with the assistance of his associate (and church secretary), Lori Payette. Following the luncheon, Lieutenant Scott Rentz of the Watervliet Fire Department gave a very informative presentation on fire safety in the home.

We are pleased to have been informed that Parish Council Vice Chairman, Bob Bedian, has been assigned as the Parish Council Liaison to the Adult Fellowship. We look forward to Bob’s guidance and support in strengthening our club. A variety of suggestions are being considered with hopes of boosting attendance to our regular meetings and special activities.

On Wednesday, November 4, our traditional Thanksgiving Luncheon will be served. Our dear friend Ed Belemjian, who is no longer with us, had prepared the turkey(s) for our Thanksgiving feasts for many years. We thank Sandy Kilidjian for taking on the very large task of preparing this meal, with the help of her “volunteer” associates. A fellowship program is being formulated for the occasion.

Our Christmas celebration will be held on Wednesday, December 2 with a luncheon at the Century House in Latham. Reservations will be required for this event; please be on the lookout for more details in the near future.

We emphasize that all of our luncheons and activities are open to all adults in our community; church membership and/or Adult Fellowship membership is not required. Information on our activities is published in the church’s Sunday Bulletin, as well as an e-mail version distributed each week. If you wish, we can add you to the list for our calling committee to personally contact you with details on each of our activities. Please tell us of your interest, by contacting the church office.

Women’s Guild Ministry in Relation to Parish Life Increasing Membership: Spanning Generations

The Women’s Guild of St. Peter Armenian Church is vital to the heart and soul of our church life, also known as the “backbone” of the church. Our ladies are truly an amazing group of women with talents to share in so many ways and they do so with love and devotion. To be a Women’s Guild member, demonstrates commitment and dedication, not only to the organization itself and the Armenian Church, but also to the community at large through outreach projects. The fellowship and lifelong bonds, the networking, and friendships we make as members of the Women’s Guild is truly a priceless gift. One can never forget how our community came together to minister to the victims of Superstorm Sandy or the Christmas outreach for Hope House to benefit the Cancer Society through our Pennies from Heaven collection. These are but two examples of what the Mission of the Women’s Guild is all about . . . to nurture the souls and minds of women of the Armenian Church by linking generations together through faith, service and cultural heritage to strengthen the Armenian Church and community and the greater community in which the Guild serves. We encourage all women of our parish to become members of our Women’s Guild and to share in this very special organization.

On September 13, 2015 we celebrated Women’s Guild Day in our parish. Women participated in all aspects of the Divine Liturgy by greeting people as they came to church, passing the kiss of peace, singing in the choir, offering the gospel readings, and more. The day culminated in a lovely coffee hour sponsored by the Women’s Guild. Thank you to all who took part in this special occasion. We extend a special thank you to Toros Shamlian for providing the donation for the beautiful carnations distributed to the women in church that day. His donation was made lovingly in memory of his mother, Mary Shamlian.

Membership Meeting & Luncheon

Sunday, November 8

Open to All Women!

The annual Women’s Guild General Membership Meeting and Luncheon will take place on Sunday, November 8 following worship services with Parish Council providing the luncheon in the Gdanian Auditorium. All Women’s Guild members are encouraged to come to church that day,

participate in services, and attend the luncheon and meeting. Your input is greatly needed as we come together to plan the next steps for the Women’s Guild. Additionally, elections to replace outgoing Executive Committee members will take place following the luncheon. All women of the parish are asked to please consider getting involved with the Women’s Guild and are invited to join us on this day. Everyone has a talent they can share!

Your Guild needs you! Your Church needs you!

PET FOOD DRIVE, October 18 - December 6: In conjunction with the Annual Holiday Bazaar, the Women’s Guild is working with the Channel 10 ABC News Pet Connection. Specific pet-related items will be collected October 18 through December 6 and will go to benefit local rescue shelters of the Capital District. Please consider dropping off your donation at St. Peter Armenian Church. See flyer in this issue for details.

The executive board is actively working behind the scenes planning and preparing for the Annual Holiday Bazaar to be held this year on December 5 & 6. Mark your calendar so you don’t miss this festive event, and share the news with your friends, family, neighbors and co-workers. The Bazaar is one of the major fundraisers for “The Family Church [Hye] on the Hill” and it’s a great time to stock up on all those Armenian pastries and specialty dishes for the holidays.

Many prep dates for the Bazaar have already been scheduled (see below), and your hands are needed to make the work light. We have fun at all the baking days making the delicious foods which will be made available for purchase at the Bazaar. Thank you to all the coordinators who have (again) agreed to step up to the plate and lend their talents to the success of this event. We are currently seeking coordinators for making simit and khourabia. Please consider lending your time and talent.

This event again offers sponsorship opportunities for businesses and individuals/families. Endowment Funds

Thank you to Marion Jaffarian for establishing the new Toros, Aghavni & Virginia Jaffarian Endowment Fund. If you are interested in establishing an endowment fund, please contact the St. Peter Church office. Also, contributions to existing funds can be made at any time during the year.

Words of Thanks Dearest Friends & Family, Thank you so much for your very generous donation to our family. This [note] is long overdue, I apologize. This year has been the most difficult of my life. I have been faced with many challenges and truly pushed to my limit . . . and then past it. I am told that these trials will make me stronger, and that I will never be tested beyond my own strength. I do not think this is true. I believe that we are tested beyond our own strength so that we will see why we need God in our lives, and turn to Him for strength. Thank you again so much for loving us. Thank you for giving to us in our time of need. Most importantly, thank you for keeping us in your prayers.

With love,

The [Christine Kilidjian] Nicholson Family

Sincere appreciation to each and everyone of you for your thoughtful outreach upon the passing of my mother, Virginia. Your beautiful cards and kind words meant so very much. She loved the St. Peter Church community and I know her heart would have been warmed by the outpouring of love and support towards our family,

With much gratitude,

Paulette & Family

National News

We are The Fellowship of St. Voski ~ OUR MISSION . . .

Nor Voskiank is a fellowship of men and women working toward the revival and restoration of Armenian Orthodox theology and life within the Armenian Church at large. The fellowship is named after St. Voski and his companions (the Voskians), who were a group of Christian martyrs and monastics from the first century, many of whom who were students of St. Thaddeus. According to tradition, St. Thaddeus ordained as their leader a priest called Chrysos (Greek for “gold,” Armenian “voski”), and thereafter the group came to be known as the Voskians. The Armenian Church remembers the Companions of St. Voski on the first Thursday after the PreLenten Fast (Arachavorats Bahk).

In the spirit of the Voskians, Nor Voskiank seeks to support the cultivation of a thriving, united, worldwide Armenian Christian community through prayer, fellowship, and the publ icat ion of pract ical educational resources covering the entire breadth of Christian life as lived, interpreted and testified to by the Armenian Church since ancient times. Among our main educational outreaches is The Treasury, a quarterly magazine with short articles and essays covering topics ranging from liturgy and worship, theology, church history, Christian culture, lives of the Saints, book summaries and more. In future issues of The Treasury, we look forward to inviting all our fellows to submit articles for potential publication, as “faith comes from hearing, and hearing t h r o u g h t h e w o r d o f Christ.” (Romans 10:17). We hope that through these efforts

and more, the faithful of the Body of Christ may be reinvigorated in their everyday Christian walk, so that they may inspire all who are earnestly searching for meaning, purpose and guidance in this life. The Fellowship of St. Voski is steadfastly committed to achieving this goal by proclaiming the Good News of the Gospel through the resounding voice of the Armenian Church. May God richly bless you!

For more information or to request copies of The Treasury, please visit www.stvoski.org, Facebook at ‘Fellowship at St. Voski’ or contact us by mail at PO Box 377, Sutton, MA 01590.

What a wonderful new publication about the teachings of the Armenian Church! This is a worthwhile magazine to be had in every home, supporting our own Eric Vozzy who is one of the main contributors to “The Treasury.” —Der Stepanos
