    The Year 2013 . . .

Wow, time is flying by and not stopping for anyone or anything. So this is the year, 2013, that you are going to get things right…follow through on the resolutions you made last month. Lose weight, workout more, save money, spend more time with family, be a better person, be healthier, pray more, start going to church (or go more often) and all those other things that we try to do, try to achieve, try to make right, but can seem so overwhelming and too difficult to accomplish.

Let me offer a simple, yet challenging proposition to getting things right in life. Here is the solution -- It is the ability and willingness to surrender our life to our loving God and Saviour Jesus Christ -- He makes things anew. If we want renewal, if we want things different in our life, if we want things better in the world, community, family and church - we must lay down our will and desire before Him and He will guide us in our daily life. Then the result will be that "all things will be possible through Him," and we will even be able to move mountains, just as Jesus promised us.

Even as your parish priest, I have difficulty in handing things over to my Lord. I want to hold on to those things that are not fruitful or God-pleasing. I am a stubborn Armenian and think that my way is the right way, or I can do this or that on my own. How wrong I am! It is, in a sense, human nature to follow our own will. It is, in an earthly sense, counterculture to be dependent totally on God; however, with God on our side and, better yet, with God at the helm, He transforms our human nature and is able to live in us more profoundly.

Here are three New Testament verses to remember and keep in your heart during the year 2013, as you try to make that surrender to Him. I am praying for you and please pray for me too!

    • 2 Corinthians 5:17 - Therefore, if any one is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has passed away, behold, the new has come.

    • Matthew 19:26 - But Jesus looked at them and said to them, “With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

    • Galatians 2:20 - I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me; and the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

Hope to see you in Church soon! God Bless You, Fr. Stepanos

    Armenians Unite

December and January were a couple of wonderful months in the St. Peter Armenian Church community. Our very hardworking Women’s Guild hosted the 2nd Annual Holiday Bazaar on December 1 & 2. I think they may have even surpassed the success of last year’s event. We really can’t thank them enough for all that they do for our church.

We then celebrated American Christmas Eve and Armenian Christmas Eve and Christmas day with special services that were all well attended. Thank you to all who participated. I hope you and your families had the opportunity to experience the joy and blessings of the Christmas season.

I can’t help but wonder how nice it would have been if both of the Armenian churches had celebrated these festive times together; I hope someday the churches do unite. I remember in April of last year, we commemorated the anniversary of the Armenian Genocide with the Holy Cross Armenian Church of Troy. We both came together to remember our grandparents and great grandparents. I especially remember the youth of both churches as they stood and held hands in front of the altar and sang an appropriate Armenian song. Why can’t the adults do the same and unite in celebrating our same rich Badarak (Divine Liturgy) together every Sunday?

They say there is power in unity. As it says in the Bible in Luke: chapter 11, verse 17, “Every Kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and a house divided against a house falleth.” I hope and pray for the unity of our Armenian churches someday.

We are looking ahead to an active February and March, and I urge all of us to come and enjoy our Badarak every Sunday. Don’t forget to bring your children to Armenian School and Sunday School.

I remind all of us to pray for the sick in our community and continue to include our dear beloved Der Garen Gdanian in our prayers. Also remember to pray for our brothers and sisters in Syria as they are going through some very difficult times in that country.

  • Building Fund Report

Our 2009-2012 Building Fund campaign concluded on December 31, 2012. Our two campaigns provided us with enough money to fully pay for the church renovations and expansion. In the process, we also raised an additional $12,870.82 which will be used to help defray the cost of painting the sanctuary and for some related repairs. A schedule follows showing where the monies came from and how they were spent. As indicated in previous issues of the Loosaper, this edition contains a listing, by individual, of all contributions to the two Building Fund campaigns and includes amounts contributed for the various memorials. My sincere gratitude to everyone whose name appears on the listing, including those who appear as “Anonymous.”

You are Blessed Today Spiritual Message from Fr. Stepanos Doudoukjian

During a home visit last week, I was inspired by a conversation I was having with a faith-filled parishioner. The woman was reminiscing about her sister and mother (both of whom are deceased). The mother used to tell her and her family, "God has blessed you this day, now don't go ahead and ruin it." As we sat at the table having a cup of coffee, we then discussed this very simple yet profound comment. It was a spiritual experience for me! What an awesome mantra to live our lives by and to follow each day. Consider it a guide we can follow and a prayer we can keep close to our heart each morning we awake.

God surely has blessed all of us. We can evaluate our life and easily find challenges and difficulties that we are facing at this moment, but we do not have to search too far to realize the abundance of blessings God has given us. Each day when we awake, we are given blessings upon blessings -- life, breath, shelter, food, family, church, friends, education, the Bible, prayer, a bed to sleep on, heat, health…. and the list can go on and on. Perhaps spend one day listing all the blessings you have. I am curious as to how many you will find!

However, as clear as the blessings can be in our lives, we tend to thwart them, put them aside and allow evil to creep into our hearts and change our lives. As this profound woman so powerfully stated, "God has blessed you this day, now don't go ahead and ruin it." How can we ruin a day? Let's start the list…. a negative attitude, sarcasm, being angry, bitter, resentful, revengeful, being self-centered, feeling defeated, depressed and down, self-pity, self-absorption, allowing the devil to enter into our life, allowing the fiery darts of the evil one to change our thoughts, actions and feelings from good to bad, gossiping, being judgmental…. and that list can go on and on as well. Try making a list of all things we do during our day "to ruin" the day with which God has blessed us.

Try for one day or one week to wake up and think about the multitude of blessings God has given you, and fight hard against the evil one, so that you can truly carry the blessings of God with you all day long -- and not ruin the day!!

    God bless you,

    Fr. Stepanos

As they say, ‘How time flies when you’re having fun!’ It truly did for me as I write my last article for this issue of the Loosaper. As Women’s Guild Chairman, I have had such fun working with the executive body and the membership alike and it has been so gratifying to get to know each and every one like never before.

During the past two years we had eight new members join the Guild and, sadly, we lost four dear members. It is very important to keep moving forward with our membership drive and make the backbone of our beloved church stronger and better in the future.

I thank Der Stepanos for his presence and guidance at every one of our meetings. I also thank the Parish Council for their support whenever and wherever needed. Thank you to all the women of the parish for positive responses when I called for help. It truly is amazing what can be accomplished when we all work together.

I am pleased to announce the new executive body is as follows:

Chairman, Sharon Foley; Vice Chairman, Adrina Tutunjian; Treasurer, Valerie Demarest; Recording Secretary, Nellie Sargsyan-Pittman; Corresponding Secretary, Holly Dadekian. Serving as advisors are: Nectar Derian, Yn. Paulette Doudoukjian, Helena Ekmalian and Sonya Moroukian.

I wish the new executive committee much success in their endeavors and I urge anyone interested in joining the fun to contact any one of the ladies listed above. You will not be disappointed.

Thank you and God bless the Women’s Guild of the St. Peter Armenian Church. Mary Panjarjian,

    Women’s Guild Chairman

Our Christmas Luncheon was held on December 5 at the Desmond. A bountiful buffet was provided and, again this year, Ed Kebabjian provided our musical entertainment. He played familiar tunes on his special banjo for an old-fashioned sing-along of traditional Christmas carols and other songs.

We usually do not schedule any meetings during the winter season to avoid cancellations due to adverse weather conditions. Therefore, our next scheduled luncheon meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 13 at 12:30 p.m. in the Gdanian Auditorium. A potluck Lenten buffet will be provided by our members. The meal is organized so that the variety and quantity are appropriate for this day. Members will be called for their contribution. Non-members are invited to join us and can make reservations by calling Lucy Morton at (518) 274-6527.

We welcome any adult member of our community to join our group luncheons and other activities. Additional information can be obtained from our church office or a member of the Adult Fellowship Executive Committee.

The ACYOA Juniors held their Annual Gift-Giving to the Needy activity on Friday, December 21, 2012. Youth and leaders/parents visited seven families throughout the Capital District who had contacted the church for help this holiday season. One family in particular was so grateful and overwhelmed by our bringing gifts for the whole family that they presented us with a special Christmas card and thank you message for helping them for the holidays.

An ACYOA ‘Chopped’ Lock-in will be held at the church Friday evening, March 22. Included in the program for the evening will be a special activity to prepare a creative, unique dish from specific ingredients provided — based on the Food Network television show of the same name. More details will be sent to all Juniors and parents in the near future.

The ACYOA Juniors will once again host the Annual Palm Sunday Brunch for the community to held on March 24 immediately following services. Details will be announced in the near future.

The Book Club will not meet in February; therefore, the next gathering will be held on Wednesday, March 27, at 7:00 p.m. led by Dn. Yervant Kutchukian. The next selection is Proof of Heaven: A Neurosurgeon's Journey into the Afterlife by Eben Alexander. One reviewer said, “Proof of Heaven is more than just an awe-inspiring account of a profound encounter with spiritual reality. Dr. Alexander’s neuroscience career taught him that near-death experiences are brain-based illusions, and yet his personal experience left him dumbstruck. His honest struggle to make sense of this unforgettable journey is a gripping story, unique in the literature of spiritual experiences, that may well change how we understand our role in the universe.” Check your local bookseller or library for availability.
