With more than 100 attorneys in downtown Los Angeles, a new conference space in Century City, and attorneys in a variety of practice areas, Kirkland’s Los Angeles office is an exciting, energetic place to work.

Kirkland’s tradition of giving associates a high level of responsibility early in their careers begins with the summer program. We generally hire into practice groups as summer associates, so students who have decided on a practice area can begin developing their skills in their specific practice area from the very beginning of their careers. As a summer associate in the Los Angeles office, you’ll work on sophisticated matters alongside the Firm’s partners and associates, who are eager to support and guide you along the way. Intellectual property litigation and litigation summer associates have frequently been assigned to trial teams during the summer, and corporate summer associates have participated in the closing of mergers and acquisitions, financings and other significant transactions.

Kirkland gives its attorneys — including summer associates — autonomy and flexibility. The Firm’s open assignment system lets you direct your career path by allowing you to choose the matters that interest you and work with attorneys from whom you wish to learn. Summer in Los Angeles

As a Los Angeles summer associate, your schedule will be packed with training and social events that allow you to develop relationships with Kirkland attorneys who invest their time and energy in getting to know you.

Summer associates participate in Kirkland’s robust training and development programs, including the Kirkland Institute for Trial Advocacy (KITA), which consists of a series of direct- and cross-examinations conducted in a trial-like setting. To prepare for KITA, summer associates train to prepare openings, closings, direct- and cross-examinations, and how to use documentary evidence and demonstrative aids.

Summer associates also participate in seminars on the nuts and bolts of Kirkland’s deal practice, culminating in a mock deal negotiation with Kirkland partners serving as coaches. Additionally, we also

conduct a panel discussion on how our various transactional practices work collaboratively with one another in a hypothetical deal.

Los Angeles is a trend-setting, vibrant city with an extraordinary history and a rich cultural heritage. It’s known as the Entertainment Capital of the World and is home to renowned museums, along with 75 miles of sunny coastline. Summer associates explore some of these amazing places while getting to know fellow summer associates and Kirkland attorneys.

Past summer events have included a trip to Palm Springs, surfing and paddle boarding lessons, a suite at a Dodgers game, diversity dinners, Women’s Leadership Initiative events, and an end of summer casino party at a partner’s home.
