Institute for Housing and Urban Development Studies(IHS), RotterdamMaking Cities Work - SPATIAL AND STRUCTURALPRINCIPLES FOR INFORMAL SETTLEMENT UPGRADING:TRANSLATING THEORY INTO PRACTICEThe approach to human settlement planning needs the inputs of severaldisciplines, from urban planning and design, architecture and engineeringto social sciences and economics. The starting point is to have a clearunderstanding of the spatial and structural principles behind the configurationof settlements and the performance qualities that settlements can achievewhen applying them. The link between physical improvements and qualityof life is not a simple cause-effect relationship, but one of complexity andmultidimensionality. Nevertheless the creation of quality built-environmentscan foster and contribute to achieving quality of life as long as these areaccompanied by other interventions related to human and socio-economicdevelopment, good governance and sustainability.
