POWERING PARTNER COLLABORATIONThe number of 3D design solutions available to the architecture industry continues to grow. At LMN Architects in Seattle, Washington, USA, it is the job of Tim Logan, design technology manager, to test them. According to Logan, they are not all equal.

“Using the cloud-based 3DEXPERIENCE® platform was like a breath of fresh air,” Logan explained. “It is well thought out, and a lot more fun to actually work with, than anything we’ve encountered before. It whetted our appetite for more.”

His enthusiasm may be partly explained by LMN’s initial success with Dassault Systèmes’ (3DS) 3DEXPERIENCE platform. The company’s very first project designed with the platform, an octahedron structure with triangular sides, took a first prize at the Seattle American Institute of Architecture Honor Awards competition.

SEARCHING FOR BETTER TECHSince 1979, LMN has provided design services in architecture, urban design and interiors for a wide variety of public and private clients. Its projects are diverse, with particular strengths in convention centers and buildings for the performing arts and higher education.

LMN’s Tech Studio group, a small internal R&D organization, is devoted to researching compelling new technologies that LMN can apply to its work in innovative ways to give the firm a competitive advantage. It was the Tech Studio group that brought the 3DEXPERIENCE platform into LMN.

“In our industry, CATIA and Dassault Systèmes have an almost mythic reputation,” Logan explained. “Everyone knows it has been used by [Frank] Gehry and really high-tech firms.”

LMN began using the 3DEXPERIENCE platform on a project with a complex curtain wall façade. To execute the project effectively, LMN wanted to work closely with the project’s fabricators in order to ensure that the design was carried through accurately to fabrication and construction.

“CATIA was mentioned by every fabricator we talked to,” Logan said. “So we decided to integrate the 3DEXPERIENCE platform into our processes so that we could talk with fabricators in their own language.”

QUICK AND EASY ONTO THE CLOUDLMN was up and running on the cloud-based 3DEXPERIENCE platform in just a day, Logan said. That speed is the result of the platform’s intuitive navigation and availability on the cloud.

“As soon as we saw there was a cloud-based offering for CATIA, we were really excited,” Logan recalled. The low maintenance required for a cloud-based tool would reduce work for LMN’s small IT department. “It solved a lot of problems all at once.”

LMN’s staff made a smooth transition to working in the cloud-based environment. The user experience was virtually the same as working from local infrastructure within the firm. “Working in a cloud-based environment like the 3DEXPERIENCE platform was just as seamless as working directly on our desktop. We were really happy with the performance of it,” Logan expressed.

IFWE COMPASS FOR INTUITIVE NAVIGATIONLMN’s design staff warmed quickly to the unified user interface presented by the IFWE Compass – despite first impressions.

“The first time we saw the IFWE Compass, we thought it was just an icon,” Logan said. “But we quickly learned that it was actually the navigation system within the 3DEXPERIENCE platform. We quickly gravitated towards it, and it made a lot of sense in how it was organized and the different applications that you could reach within it.”

The IFWE Compass enables users to navigate quickly to applications, to live custom dashboarding capabilities, online chat including 3D imaging, cloud storage, unified search across all applications and data, and more.

Challenge:LMN Architects needed to foster collaboration with fabricators and other project stakeholders.

Solution:The Seattle-based firm chose the 3DEXPERIENCE® platform on the Cloud for its new unified user interface and emphasis on true model-based collaboration.

Benefits:For LMN Architects, the cloud-based 3DEXPERIENCE platform has proven easy to launch, fun to use, and powerful not just as a design platform but also an environment for collaborating with partners.

“Very quickly, and very intuitively, we used the Compass to navigate through the platform and started enjoying the software. It did not take us long to decide we wanted to take our business forward using the 3DEXPERIENCE platform,” Logan said.

GREATER COLLABORATIVE POWERA key benefit to the cloud-based 3DEXPERIENCE platform is the powerful collaboration framework. The strength of the platform’s collaborative capabilities reassured LMN that it made the right choice in choosing 3DS, since its original goal was to collaborate more effectively with fabricators.

“Being able to work on the same model, so we’re not transferring information between objects and platforms, is a major step forward for us,” Logan said. “We’re now collaborating on the model, the same model, the one source of truth.”

Among the features enabling that new level of collaboration is 3DSWYM. It creates an environment where interaction, content, experiences and feedback are organized around communities. Logan expects that 3DSWYM will enable LMN to elicit additional input from users within the company, as well as its clients, consultants, and working partners including fabricators, throughout the design process.

DASHBOARDS TURN INFORMATION INTO INTELLIGENCETo organize all of that input, make sense of it and apply it intelligently, LMN users turn to the 3DEXPERIENCE platform’s dashboard capabilities. Personalized dashboards can be used to monitor and manage new information in real-time. The result: better, faster decision-making.

“We have found that dashboards are really useful to pull in a lot of information from different sources,” Logan said. “Some of that information pertains to our projects and project partners, and some is more broadly applicable to the AEC industry in general.”

Dashboard sources can include blogs, newsfeeds, project-based 3DSWYM communities, project documents, and more. They also provide an easy-to-manage space to consolidate input for later access and reference.

Logan envisions dashboards having a major impact on projects when LMN needs to show project status and progress, using the dashboard interface in 3DSWYM. “We are anticipating that users will just log in to the service and quickly be able to see where the project is, and what the next steps are, so we can keep on schedule,” Logan said.

CHANGING THE WAY PEOPLE WORKLogan believes using the 3DEXPERIENCE platform has the power to change the way people work on projects, through such features as knowledgeware and design templates. From a more powerful user interface to new application capabilities

(Top) Created with the 3DEXPERIENCE platform, the Octahedron allowed people to walk inside and experience how light fractured on the surfaces. (Bottom) CATIA enables LMN to go from its design intent to fabrication model with more accuracy and at a quicker pace.
