Dr James B Bussel, MD

• He is Emeritus Professor of Pediatrics, Medicine and Obstetrics and Gynecology at

Weill Cornell Medicine, New York, NY

• He graduated cum laude from Yale University, attended Medical school at Columbia

College of Physicians and Surgeons, did his residency in Pediatrics at Cincinnati

Children’s Hospital, and a fellowship in Pediatric Hematology-Oncology at Weill

Cornell and Memorial Sloan Kettering.

• Since 1981, he has been an attending at New York Presbyterian Hospital and a

professor at Weill Cornell Medicine.

• His clinical and clinical research interests have been largely in Immune

Thrombocytopenia (ITP) and Fetal and Neonatal Alloimmune Thrombocytopenia

(FNAIT).

• He has published over 400 manuscripts predominantly in these areas. Six are first or

second authored in the New England Journal of Medicine.

• In 2012 with Dr Richard Berkowitz he shared the King Faisal International Prize for

Medicine (the so-called Arab Nobel Prize) for their work in non-invasive management

of FNAIT.

• Dr Bussel has participated in the first ASH ITP guideline development and in the

Consensus manuscript.

• He has been a reviewer for multiple journals, an ad hoc reviewer for the NIH, and an

abstract reviewer for ASH and EHA.
