Introduction
What is listening? It is the complex process of receiving, focusing, deciphering,
accepting, sorting, hearing, understanding and judging what wehear
We listen more than we speak. A person can listen 400-800 words
per minute while its ideal speed is 120-150 words per minutes.
Listening Vs. Hearing
As mentioned earlier listening is a complex process which
includes 8 steps. While hearing is the one of the components of listening,
hearing means listening enough to catch what the speaker issaying.

Traits of a good listenerAcquiring the skills of active listening needs much effort
however few guidelines are given in coming slides
Being non-evaluated:
If you are active listener your non verbal and verbalbehavior will suggest to the speaker that you are being
properly heard and understood
It should not however indicate what you think about the
person
Your behavior conveys the impression that you acceptthe person without making any judgment of right or
wrong

Traits of a good listener
Paraphrasing:
If one wish you to clarify a point, he can simply
paraphrase what the speaker has said and enquire from
the speaker whether he have heard it accurately Implication:
To reflect implication one have to go beyond the
contents of the speaker indicating him appreciation for
his ideas.
The listener's aim here is to reflect eagerness and zest by
nodding or through verbal means thereby giving
positive feedback

Traits of a good listener
Reflecting hidden feelings: In order to judge and unleash the feelings , intentions,
beliefs or values that may influencing the speakers
words we have to go beyond the contents of the
conversation.
In this listener try to empathize or identify himself /herself
with speaker to experience how he or she feels
Phrases like If I were in your place . . . are used.
Inviting further contribution:
In situation where one haven't heard or understood
enough yet to respond with empathy and
understanding, prompt the speaker to share more

Active vs. Passive listening Paying Attention:
The responsibility of the listener is to show keenness in thespeaker and speaker and speech by his expression, alertness, and by asking questions about the speech if
required. By doing this the listener will encourage the speaker to
express his ideas clearly and enthusiastically
Concentrate on the themes, supporting ideas, anddigression. Paying attention is equally important not to
neglect the physical aspects of the person. Hisappearance, expression, body movements andpostures are conveying meaning as are his word.
