Neluvhola was stabbed in the stomach twice and left to die. According to a spokesperson for the Tshilwavhusiku police, Const Godwin Mahuwa, the in- cident happened at about 18:40. “The accused allegedly stole a knife at a local supermarket. He then visited the Neluvhola fam- ily where he demanded to see his former girlfriend. The deceased, who was watering his vegetable garden at the time, then told Thu- lare that his daughter was not at home. According to Mahuwa, Neluvhola was rushed to the nearby Kutama Health Centre, from where he was later transferred to the Louis Trichardt Memorial Hospital. Doctor’s formal bail application postponed

Mother of slain man welcomes sentence

The Thohoyandou Magis-trate’s Court, which is usually empty, was packed to capacity on Monday during the appear-ance of a well-known Vhembe medical doctor.

The doctor has been charged with the rape of a 21-year old patient, who had come to seek medical help at his surgery at Makhuvha outside Thohoy-andou.Dr Justice Mulaudzi’s formal bail application was post-poned to Thursday (yesterday).

Spectators, among them fel-low church members and col-leagues from the hospital where he works, waited since the morn-ing until his name was called after teatime.

In an appearance that took less than 10 minutes, the prosecution and the accused’s defence agreed that the matter be postponed to Thursday for a formal bail ap-plication.

Mulaudzi (40), who is a se-nior official at Hayani Hospi-tal, appeared before Magistrate Luckson Ramavhale. Prosecutor Mashudu did not waste time and asked for a seven-day postpone-ment, saying there were still issues that police would like to investigate before they could start with the formal bail application.

For the accused, Adv Anton Ramaano said the issues should have been disclosed to them on September 29, but he was sur-prised to learn of the “issues” in court. After consultations with the magistrate, all the parties agreed for the bail application to be held on Thursday.

Mulaudzi first appeared on Thursday last week and his case was postponed to Monday for a bail application. His arrest and subsequent appearance is a sequel to an incident that hap-pened at his consulting rooms,

where the woman is alleged to have been raped.

The victim, a woman from Thengwe in the Mutale area, is alleged to have complained of flue. Mulaudzi allegedly told her to undress, so that he could examine her. While busy examin-ing her, Mulaudzi is said to have raped her, whereupon she jumped from the bed and noticed that she had been penetrated. She appar-ently shouted for help, where-upon nurses came to her aid and the police were summoned.

Responding to the allegations, Dr Phophi Ramathuba from South African Medical Associa-tion said a person should not be judged guilty until proven other-wise in a court of law. She said as people in the medical fraternity they felt ashamed of the report as the incident compromised the profession. She said they would wait for the law to take its course.

The mother of a 22-year-old man, who was viciously as-saulted and died of his injuries, says even though she welcomes the life sentences her son’s murderers received, she is still struggling to come to terms with his death.

Tshildzi Tshilate of Tshisahulu outside Thohoyandou was bru-tally assaulted, and he died as a result of his injuries. His mother, Ms Sarah Tshilate, could not hide her tears after the Limpopo High Court sitting in Thohoyandou sentenced seven men to terms ranging from three years to life .

The seven men, Victor Ma-kumbane (52), Enoch Maph-wanya (58), deputy director of finance at Univen Peter Ralineba (46), Alfred Magadani (61), Wil-lem Munyai (52), a former po-liceman, Sindiso Ronald Ngculu (49) and Takalani Nekhwevha (40) were sentenced to different terms on Thursday.

Six of the accused were found guilty of murder and were sen-tenced to life. Munyai, Ngculu and Nekhwevha were found guilty of kidnapping and were sentenced to three years without an option of a fine. All the ac-cused were also found guilty of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm and were sentenced

“Mountain Killer” still on the looseAfter a public outcry that police are not doing enough to catch a fugitive who killed a local woman, the Thohoy-andou police have finally released an identikit of a man they believe could help them in their investigation into the murder case.

The case relates to the murder a fortnight ago of a woman at Vondo outside Thohoyandou.

It is alleged the woman, Mmbangiseni Netshikulwe (31), was busy collecting wood with two other women at the nearby mountain when they were surprised by a man who tried to rob and rape them. It is alleged the man hid next to the firewood which they had already collected and waited for them to come back.

On their return to the spot, the women were allegedly threatened with a big panga by the suspect, who ordered them to the bush, so that he could rape them.

A struggle apparently ensued and the man dropped the panga, whereupon he drew his firearm. He is alleged to have shot one of the women in the forehead. She was taken to hospital and died while receiving medical attention.

Community members have complained about the shoddy police treatment after the case was reported to them. They complained that police who at-tended the case did nothing to

help trace the suspect, who the community believed was still on the mountain.

“We are very aggrieved; the police have failed us. Had they done the right thing of bringing dogs and maybe a helicopter, the suspect would not have gotten away. We are appealing to the police to polish up their act as we depend on them for our safety,” said Avhapfani Nevondo, a community leader in the area.

He said there were many unresolved cases of attacks on unarmed women who ventured into the mountains while look-

continuing. “The reason why we released the identikit is because we are working on the case and we would like to have assistance from the community, so that we arrest the culprit,” she said.

She said no arrest has been made in connection with the case.

“We are appealing to mem-bers of the public who have information about the incident to please assist us in tracing the suspect,” she said. Those with information can contact their nearest police station or alter-natively phone 079 517 0028 or 073 021 3848

ing for fire-wood.

“ W e a r e very worried that more in-nocent lives could still be lost as the sus-pect is still at large and we urge police to do their best to catch the sus-pect,” he said.

T h o h o y -andou police spokesperson C o n s t a b l e A v h a f a r e i Tshiovhe said the case was receiving ur-gent attention and investi-gations were An identikit of the so-called Mountain Killer.

to three years’ imprison-ment with an option of a R6 000 fine.

Ms Tshilate, who was in court when sentence was passed, broke down on hearing the judge-ment. She said she wel-comed the sentence, even though she still

had a sore heart which she did not think would heal. She said she had given up hope after such a long time that the matter would finally come to an end.

“I have been waiting for too long and was on the verge of a breakdown. I am sick and is dif-ficult for me to cope. I am still burning with pain, thinking of the pain my son went through before he died. They killed an innocent young man, who struggled to make a decent living and never stole from anybody. The pain will remain with me forever,” she said.

The mother of six said life would never be the same without her son. She said he was working at the local school and, through his meagre salary, was able to assist his family. “We are very poor family that depends on grants, and the small contribu-tion he made to the family made a lot of difference. Now that he is gone, we are finding it very hard to cope,” she said.

The investigating officer, D/Capt Shumani Raphulu, sighed with relief. “I have been a detec-tive for more than 20 years, but this was one of the most difficult cases I have worked on. I am just happy that justice has finally pre-vailed and those guilty are now

paying for their sins,” he said.Thohoyandou police spokes-

person Avhafarei Tshiovhe wel-comed the sentence, saying it would serve as a deterrent to others not to commit crime.

The case relates to the death of Tshilidzi Tshilate, who was assaulted until he died in 2008 and the assault of Fananani Tshifaro. The court found that the two were badly assaulted until Tshilate died and Tshifaro was seriously injured after they were suspected of having stolen electricity cables.

The incident happened at the grinding mill owned by Maph-wanya at Tshisahulu in 2008.

In convicting and sentencing them, the court found that the six refused to testify under oath to rebut the evidence of the main state witness, Tshifaro. After their failure to testify under oath, the court relied on the evidence of the state witness, which was not challenged. Maphwanya won the court’s favour as he was able to take the stand and exonerate him-self from the charge of murder. However, he was found guilty of a charge of assault and sentenced to a fine of R6 000 or three years’ imprisonment. He paid the fine and is now a free man.

A sad mother: Ms Sarah Tshilate, who has welcomed the sentences but is still struggling to come to terms with the murder of her son.

Sad loss: Tshildzi Tshi late (22) who was brutally killed after being suspected o f h a v i n g s t o l e n electricity cables.

Thulamela Mayor Grace Mahosi inspects the damage caused when a major storm hit Tshifudi and surrounding villages on Monday afternoon. In the photo are other people who are trying to salvage what is left after the storm.

The mayor of Thulamela, Cllr Grace Mahosi , and speaker Shadrack Maluleke, accompanied by the disaster management team, visited storm-damaged areas on Tuesday in order to assess the dam-age and to offer help.

A rain storm, accompanied by a strong wind, caused severe damage in rural areas of Thulamela on Monday evening.

Mahosi first visited Donald Fraser hospital to see those injured by the storm. They included Phathutshedzo Ndwamato (22), who was injured by falling bricks. Mahosi talked to her husband, Silas Ramaano, and as-sured him of her support. “We visited six people who were injured by the storm. At the time of our visit, one person was in the theatre in a serious condition,” she said.

The mayor also vis-ited seven families at Lambani, Lukalo and Tshifudu-Mushungwa village, which have a total of 315 families affected by the storm disaster.

She said after visit-ing the families, she found that these fami-lies had suffered vari-ous kinds of damage. “Some have had blan-kets swept away, while others want food,” she said. She added that some people's houses were destroyed totally.

One of the affected people, Ms Livhuwani

Ganndini's one-roomed house was destroyed. She is staying with her four children and relies on her child grants for survival. “After everything was destroyed, I am sleeping at the neighbours’ place,” she said.

Mahosi said she felt the area should be declared a disaster area. “The dam-age to families is serious and we will request the province to declare the area a disaster area," she said.

The head of disaster management at Thulamela, Mr Elias Chavalala, said the damage was the most serious he had seen. “We are still compiling a report, and so far, we have identified 315 families affected,” he said.

Chavalala said the damage would be assessed to see what sort of help the people needed.

The provincial traffic depart-ment says it is working hard to intensify the fight against the illegal issuing of driver's licenses. The MEC for Roads and Transport, Ms Pinky Kekana, said in a statement last Thursday that her department was working with the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) to in-vestigate these types of crimes.

According to Kekana, the in-vestigations, which commenced in 2007, revealed that driver's licenses had been issued while numerous discrepancies oc-curred. These included calcula-tion errors, no eye tests were conducted, road test times were less than required, yard test times were less than required, application forms were not fully completed and the K53 procedure was not adhered to (test reports signed by examiners who did not conduct the tests).

"As a result, 1 183 driving licenses were cancelled and 61 examiners were suspended from the eNATiS system," said Kekana. The affected driving license testing stations are: Sek-gosese, Marble Hall, Lephalale, Mokopane, Tzaneen, Blouberg, Phalaborwa, Makhado, Polok-wane and Bochum.

Kekana added that her depart-ment is currently utilising the anti-fraud and corruption unit and the SAPS to investigate corrupt practices at driving license test-ing stations.

"Currently, we are investigat-ing two such cases. The depart-ment has also deployed com-puterized learner license testing systems to 15 driving license testing centres, as a way to pre-vent corruption," she said.

Kekana has ordered that these computerised learner license test-ing systems be rolled out to the

remaining 17 testing centres in the 2012/13 financial year.

She added: "The department has assisted driving school opera-tors to develop their own struc-tures, in order to better manage their operations.

The National Road Traffic Act does not cater for operations of driving schools, which makes it difficult for the department to manage illegal operations on the part of driving schools. However, nationally, there is a draft bill which will compel driving schools to register with the department."

According to Kekana,” the high number of cancellations of driving licenses and suspension of examiners provides tangible proof that Limpopo is taking the lead in efforts to clear the fraud rot which exists in testing centres throughout the country”.

Time to rejoice: family members, friends and police celebrate the safe return of the boy.

A Thohoyandou family is still deeply traumatised after their six-year-old son was force-fully taken away by kidnap-pers, who demanded ransom for his release.

Husnen Chaniya of Tho-hoyandou Block F was on his way from the mosque after 17:00 when he was allegedly abducted by unknown men. The family became worried when he did not arrive back home from the mosque.

They started looking for him with neighbours and relatives but to no avail: Husnen was nowhere to be found. Some of those who came to help were just about to go to the police when a suspicious-looking bak-kie pulled up next to them and a letter was dropped there with strict instructions.

They were allegedly told that the boy was safe, but his safe return would only depend on their cooperation.

One of the conditions was that they should not involve the police. A number was supplied that they could phone, but only at 06:30 the following day.

The bakkie allegedly sped off

in the direction of Tshakhuma. Some members of the com-

munity tried to follow the bak-kie but lost sight of it as it was even skipping red traffic lights. They had, however, taken down the registration number of the bakkie.

They then reported the matter to the police, who sprang into action. The police were soon tracing the getaway bakkie.

A large group of community members from the Indian com-munity was also keeping vigil at the home and the police station. Their hopes were heightened when the bakkie was traced to Shayandima.

Two young men were taken in for questioning, but the boy was still not found. Police spent the whole night combing the surrounding areas for clues, but it was not until the following morning that the boy was found dumped at a home in Itsani in the Tshisahulu area. The fam-ily where he was left could not even shed light on how he had ended up there as they did not witness his being dumped there.

No sooner had the news of his being found become known

than wild celebrations started at the Thohoyandou police station, where many had been waiting to see the boy alive. The father of the boy, Mubarak Husnen, could not contain his excitement and he quickly broke the good news to his wife, who was sedated at home.

“I am very excited. The whole thing was like a dream to me. I remained hopeful that my son would be found alive and unharmed," said an elated Mubarak. He said the night of fruitless searching was like a long year for him and added that he could not understand how anybody could harm an innocent boy for the sake of money. He said the family was still traumatised and his wife would need counselling. He thanked the police for the sterling work they had done in making sure that the child returned to them safely.

A kidnap case has been opened, and no one has been arrested so far. At the time of going to press, it was not clear what had happened to the two men taken in for questioning.

Sanco and Ravele traditional authority at logger heads over burial of member

Dodgy drivers’ licenses under scrutiny

Mr Mbulaheni Mukhathedzwa (right) looks on while community members break the lock of the graveyard gate, following an instruction from the Thohoyandou High Court.

Mr David Mmbudzeni Mu-vhan go was laid to rest at last.

The South African National Civic Organization (Sanco) at Mauluma Village in the Nzhelele area is again at loggerheads with the traditional authority over the burial of one of its members.

This comes after Sanco was denied permission by the Ravele traditional authority to bury one of its members, Mr David Mmbudzeni Muvhango, at a local cemetery. Muvhango (47) died after a short illness last week.

The fighting between the traditional authority and Sanco started in 2008, when the organisation insisted that the residents should stop paying the funeral contribution of R5 directly to the Ravele traditional authority.

"This was after we realised that the chief was using the money meant for funerals in the village, for his own gains. We then decided that we must no longer pay the money to him, but rather keep the money ourselves as the organisation. This was simply to ensure that poor people are buried with dignity and respect," said the chairperson of Sanco in the village, Mr Mbulaheni Mukhathedzwa.

He added that since then, if a Sanco member passes away in the village, they experience prob-lems before a person can be buried. "The Ravele dynasty refused us (permission) to bury our loved ones at a local graveyard. They demanded R500 from the deceased's family for them to open a gate for us, which we refused to pay as Sanco," he said.

Sanco had to apply for a court interdict through the Thohoyandou High Court to stop the Ravele dynasty from preventing them to bury one of its members, Muvhango. The Ravele dynasty, however, allegedly defied the court order last Wednesday and locked the gate leading to the graveyard, preventing Sanco and family members of the deceased to get inside the graveyard.

During our reporter's visit to the village last Thursday, a sheriff of the high court, Mr Rali-phaswa, instructed that a gate of the graveyard should be opened. Community members were then granted entrance to the graveyard and a grave was dug. However, the Ravele dynasty then obtained a court interdict from the Dzanani Magistrate's Court, which Sanco defied.

Muvhango was laid to rest in the village last Sat-urday. "We defied the interdict from the magistrate, because the Ravele dynasty also defied our court in-terdict from the High Court," said Mukhathedzwa.

A representative from the Ravele dynasty, Mr Tutu Ravele, refused to comment.

Jailed for raping 9-year-old

Six in court after “assaulting thieves”

A 29-year-old Zimbabwean man was sentenced to an effective 12-year prison term for raping his nine-year-old sister.

The man had pleaded not guilty to a rape charge when he appeared before a local magistrate, Ms Mavis Kudumba.

She slapped him with a 13 years and six months prison term. Kudumba suspended 18 months of the sentence on condition of good behaviour and that he does not commit a similar crime in the next five years.

In passing sentence, Ms Kudumba said rape was a serious offence, hence the need to punish offenders severely.

The State, led by prosecutor Mr Nyasha Chengeta, said on August 4 this year the victim retired to bed with her mother at around 22:00. The two were sharing the same room.

Later that night, the man entered the room and sneaked into his sister’s blankets. He undressed her and raped her once after which he remained in the house.

After about 30 minutes, four goats entered the room, making some noise which wakened the mother. The victim then told her mother that her brother had raped her.

They made a police report, leading to the man’s arrest.

Four of the six co-accused in the court case against well-known businessman Marthinus Jacobus Oosthuyse (47), from Louis Trichardt, have not been released yet.

Oosthuyse, better known as Inus, and his four workers, Rodger Chikadzi, Gift Machipisa, David Gilbert and Mapiye Sikhokho Muthelo, appeared in the Louis Trichardt Magistrate’s Court on charges of attempted murder, kidnapping and assault last Monday. Oosthuyse’s 24-year old son, Tinus, was also arrested the following day.

Former Limpopo police commissioner Lt-Gen Amon Mashigo had to intervene the week before when Oosthuyse was locked up in the Makhado police cells. Mashigo’s intervention was required after local policemen apparently refused to release Oosthuyse, in spite of a High Court order.

Oosthuyse spent Thursday night ( September 22) behind bars after he had allegedly taken the law into his own hands and assaulted three Zimbabwean men by tying them behind his bakkie and dragging them over the ground. He suspected the men of stealing from his business.

According to information available, he and his workers also allegedly tied the Zimbabweans to a tree and assaulted them with iron pipes.

Oosthuyse’s attorney, Ms Steffie van der Wes-thuizen, said last week that she was only able to release her client late on Friday evening, after she had obtained a court order from the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria. Despite this court order,

Oosthuyse was only released when Mashigo gave the order for his

immediate release.“The officials in the charge office laughed in

my face and threw the court order on the ground,” said Van der Westhuizen. Another police officer allegedly went so far as to shout at Oosthuyse’s appointed advocate that he is a “f#%^king white racist”.

During last Monday’s court appearance, Oost-huyse was released on a R1 000 bail after the police did not oppose bail. A request from the police that he should report to the station twice a week and surrender his passport was rejected by the court because “he is not a flight risk.”

The following day, Tinus appeared on the same charges as his father and the other co-accused. He was also released on R1 000 bail. The remaining four’s bail application was first postponed until Friday and then until October 11. They will remain in custody until then.

Provincial police spokesperson Lt Col Ronel Otto confirmed last week that the police are investigating the alleged attack on the three Zim-babweans. She also confirmed that the police were still looking for the body of one of the three men who had allegedly died as a result of his injuries. Regarding the alleged unprofessional conduct of the policemen towards Van der Westhuizen, she expressed the opinion that the investigation team was still busy with the identification of scenes and could therefore not release Oosthuyse immediately.

One of the complainants in the matter, who can not be identified until he has appeared in court, had to receive medical treatment. Police are still looking for the second complainant.

17-Year-old stabbed to death in tavern

Bus victims buried in emotional service

What started as an argument at a local tavern resulted in the death of a young man. This tragic inci-dent happened at Mpheni Village outside Elim, after a 24-year-old man allegedly stabbed and killed a 17-year-old man last Saturday.

The accused, Simon Golele, was allegedly involved in an argument with Mr Kundwani Mamafha while they were busy drinking at the Sweet Waters Tavern at Mpheni village. The two men allegedly disagreed about something and a fight broke out. It is alleged that Golele stabbed Mamafha

with a sharp object in the neck. He died on the scene.

W/O Kedibone Mabatha, the spokesperson for the Waterval police, confirmed the incident. According to him, the incident happened at roughly 21:30. He added that a case of murder was opened with the police, while the investigation continued.

Golele was arrested the following day and appeared before the Waterval Regional Court, where his case was postponed for further investigations.

Mamafha is a resident of Ha-Makhakhe village at Mpheni.

Premier Cassel Mathale and Thovhele-Vho-Toni Mphephu Ramabulana led thousands of mourners around the province during the mass funeral of seven people who died in a bus accident at Tshithuthuni in the Nzhelele area a fortnight ago.

The mass funeral was held at Khakhu Secondary School on Saturday.

The bus, which was ferrying Khakhu pre-schoolers, over-turned on a steep hill on Sep-tember 20 and about 80 people were injured. The deceased who were buried are: Ms Sarah Denga (60), Phathutshedzo Phaswana (20), Mulalo Mudau (4), Orifha Singo (3), Sedzani Nthambeleni (4), Ronaldo Phaswana (4) and Thingahangwi Madada (4).

Family members and friends of the deceased could not con-tain themselves when the coffins arrived at the school and emer-gency workers had a busy day trying to assist those who fainted. The Department of Health and

Social Development had to install temporary mobile clinics, where nurses and emergency officials were treating and helping those who collapsed during the emo-tional funeral.

Thovhele-Vho-Toni Mphephu Ramabulana expressed his con-dolences to the families of the victims and said they would be sorely missed. Mphephu said the community members around the Nzhelele and Vhembe area were deeply touched by the hor-ror of the accident, especially as the victims were still so young. “The family members of the victims need our support in hard times like these, and we hope ac-cidents of this nature, which can be prevented, will never again take place on our roads,” he said.

Mr Phineus Nesane, a member of Khakhu pre-school’s SGB, said they came there to bury soldiers. “We sadly accept their deaths, but we console ourselves by the achievements they accom-plished in their short lives. We

do not dwell on the years lived, but we invest in the quality of the life lived, no matter how short it was. We do not have proper words to explain how they will be missed. May their souls rest in peace,” he said.

Vhamusanda-Vho- David Khakhu told mourners that the families had accepted the loss although it was difficult to cope with it. “We understand and ac-cept that our beloved children are gone, but it will be very dif-ficult for us to live without them. However, it is also important to acknowledge the community’s support since we were greeted with the bad news. God has done His will and there is nothing we can do because the situation is irreversible,” he said.

During the ceremony, Premier Mathale said the whole province and country were shocked after receiving the bad news of the accident and said it was a great loss to the Limpopo Province. He emphasised that the next of

Simon Golele was arrested for allegedly stabbing and killing a 17-year-old, Kundwani Mamafha, at Mpheni last Saturday.

Educat ion MEC Namane Masemola , photographed with Grade 12 pupils at the Jim Chavani High School at Xikundu on Friday.

When the management of Jim Chavani High raised the issue of an administration block after some classes were converted into one to house the staff and principal, the MEC for Education in Limpopo, Namane Masemola said that was no big deal.

Masemola promised to provide an administration block, a hall and a sci-ence laboratory to the school.

Speaking after being briefed by the school management of the school, Masemola said he was excited to see the school with such sound manage-ment.

“These schools ranks amongst Mbilwi and the other best schools in the province,” said Masemola.

He said for almost ten years the school had been consistent in churn-ing out good results. “This shows that the school has good management, because there cannot be such good results without good management,” he said.

He said Jim Chavani was a state-of-the-art school that was incom-plete and the govern-ment would provide that which it lacked with immediate effect.

Masemola later ad-dressed the Grade 12 pupils at the school and told them that they stood to get bursaries to respected universities, should they do well in the upcoming examina-tions.Masemola said

they should not put themselves under pressure and should make time to relax.

This is because there have been incidents of breakdown by pupils who exerted themselves beyond the limit in the past.

Masemola also gave good news to management, staff and pupils at Mayeke Primary school in the neighbourhood when he promised to demolish it and build a new school. This was after they visited the school and found that some classes were di-lapidated and pupils had been forced to cram into other classes.

Masemola’s announcement was welcomed by the local chief, John Xikundu, who said he was happy with the new development and this showed that the people of Xikundu counted as much as other people.

A water tanker supplies water to the residents of Thononda village. This photo was taken during Mirror´s visit to the village last Thursday.

Although the residents of Thononda Village outside Nzhelele have marched to Polokwane, protesting against the shortage of water in the area, their problems were never solved. Now the residents have resorted to collecting water from the nearby rivers for do-mestic use. The community has been without water for four years now.

The water shortage in the village be-came problematic when a water pump that supplied water for the residents broke down four years ago. Several complaints were lodged at Thulamela Municipality, but to no avail.

Even though a tanker belonging to the Vhembe District Municipality supplies water in the village, the residents say that

it is not enough as the tanker only sup-plies water once every two weeks. "The water that is being supplied by the tanker is also not safe to drink. It is yellowish in colour, which shows that it is not clean, but people are drinking it because there is no water," said Ntungufhadzeni Matamela, the secretary of the water committee in the village.

She added that the municipality was taking longer than expected to fix the water pump. "We have a borehole in this village, but since the pump broke down, it was never attended to and we want to know why. We are tired of begging the municipality to fix the pump. All we need is water," she said. Matamela added that the Thulamela Municipality had been

ignoring their problem for years.During our reporter's visit to the vil-

lage last Thursday, there were about 85 water drums lined up for water col-lectionas it was a day for the tanker to supply water to the village. The residents were fighting for water. It was hard for the elderly people who just stood and watched while the young ones were fighting. "Some of us who cannot fight for the water are sometimes left without any," said a 60-year-old resident, Ms Masindi Tshikombedza. When contacted for comment, the spokesperson for the Vhembe District Municipality, Mr Ma-todzi Ralushai, said on Monday that his municipality was busy trying to address water problems in the district. "We are

busy trying to fix prob-lems in all villages that have boreholes. We have also purchased four more trucks that are supplying water in various parts of the dis-trict in the meantime," he said.

Ralushai added that the problem of water in Thononda would soon be addressed. He dismissed claims that the water that is being supplied by the water tankers is not clean. "We cannot supply water that is not clean to the people. We care about the health of the people, as much as we want all the people to have water," he added.

Three suspected copper thieves arrestedThe police at Waterpoort have ar-rested three suspects who had been allegedly terrorising the Water-poort farming community, stealing copper cables in the area for years.

The three, Shalton Ndou (18), Clever Siphuma (30) and Justice Moyo (28), were arrested at the Vlakte Plaats Farm last Wednesday, while in possession of copper cables. They were arrested after farmers had joined the police in the search for the three accused in the area.

The value of the copper that was found in the accused’s possession is estimated to be more than R22 000.

The spokesperson for the Water-poort police, WO Hezekiel Lishivha, confirmed the incident. “We have opened a case of theft of copper cables,” he said.

He acknowledged that several cases of theft of copper cable had been reported in the area in the past. “The

farming community had been crying about cable theft for a very long time and it is good that we managed to arrest some of the culprits. We are happy that farmers have joined the fight against crime in the area,” said Lishivha.

He said the arrest was the begin-ning of a good working relationship between the police and the farmers in the area. Lishivha expressed his appreciation for the effort shown by the farmers in the fight against crime. “We thank all the farmers who as-sisted the police to arrest the three suspects. We also want to thank Mr Brink Schlesinger, who assisted with his helicopter during the search,” Lishivha added.

The three appeared in the Louis Trichardt Magistrate’s Court on Monday and the case was postponed to Wednesday (October 5). They remain in custody.

Muthuhadini celebratesLive performances filled the hall when the community of Mpheni in Elim celebrated the first three years of having a secondary phase within the Muthuhadini Combined School. This happened after the primary school was extended to include a secondary phase in 2008.

Muthuhadini Combined School was the first primary school in Mphe-ni-Elim. According to the chairperson of the school's governing body, Mr Matodzi Tshidada, it took years for the community to acquire a secondary school. Delegates even went to “sleep within the offices of the Department of Education in Polokwane” to try and persuade them to make provi-sion for senior grades. Tshidada said that the fight to acquire a secondary phase was not an easy one. “If it were not for the pioneers who went to sleep in Polokwane's departmen-tal offices, Muthuhadini Combined School would not be what it appears to be today. We are proud of what this school has achieved through parents,

and we would like to thank you for your perseverance,” said Tshidada.

The parents who played a role to in-fluence the Department of Education to give in to their demands were hon-oured and presented with certificates, shields and T-shirts. The principal of the school, Madidimalo Leshaba, extended his appreciation to all those who made it possible for the school to be a combined learning institution. “I want to thank all of you for a job well done. Mpheni community is a big community, and it deserves more than one secondary school, but we are grateful that we have Muthuhadini, which produces better results than most of the secondary schools in this area,” said Leshaba.

Businessman Carl Henning of-ficially declared the school a proudly South African one when he, with the help of Mukhethwa Mulaudzi, hoisted a South African flag. Air force base Lieutenant Cecilia Tseuoa also un-veiled the monument of the celebra-tion of the secondary phase.

Elderly people line up to be given fruit and juice at the start of the International Day for Older Persons celebrations at Mtitititi on Saturday.

Premier Cassel Mathale called on people to look after the aged and said everyone owed their existence to these people.

Speaking during the celebrations of the International Older Persons Day and the launch of the M’tititi Thusong Centre at M’tititi outside Malamulele on Saturday, Mathale said people must look after older person and should not abuse them.

Accompanied by MEC for the Trea-sury David Masondo and MEC for Pub-lic Works Thabitha Mohla la , he sa id his government had been consistent in respecting older per-sons. "We have been increasing pension grants and that shows the seriousness with which the government takes the welfare of older persons,” he said.

He said the Thu-song centre was one facility that would as-

sist pensioners and other people to access services near their homes. He called on the community to look after the facility. “It is built with public funds and it must serve you and your grandchildren,” he said.

He said if the facility was vandalised and items such as computers werestolen, it would hit the community in the pocket as it was their taxes that built it.

Senior citizens who came from the area were given fruits and drinks. They danced together and were dressed in dif-ferent traditional clothes that Limpopo offers. They were later served meals and it was a day to remember for them.

The chairman of the Vhembe Older Persons Forum, Elias Shihlomulo, hailed the government for the treatment meted out to older persons.

Rendani Sithodo and Gift Ndou are fighting for the ball.

Matika FC continued to drop league points when they lost 3-2 to Madombidzha Arsenal in their Safa Vhembe SAB league match at the Madombidzha grounds on Sunday.

Arsenal deserved to win from the onset, as Matika were running for cover for the best part of the game.

The home team took the lead in the eighth minute. Mbengeni Ram-buwani caught the Mati-ka keeper off guard and blasted in a half-volley from inside the box.

The boys from Ma-sagani cou ld have equalised in the 10th minute, but Matha Rat-shilaya shot wide.

The home team's Da-kalo Nwanamwidwa combined well with Rit-shidze Matodzi at the forefront.

L o n d y M u s i a m o made no mistake after receiving a neat pass from Rendani Sithodo within the box, to make the score 2-0.

Matika did not give

in without a fight, despite the setback. They continued to fight like a team and reduced the mar-gin after Mpepe Mhlanga was brought down and the referee awarded a penalty. Pedry Pule scored from the spot.

Arsenal introduced Shepo

Ranku for Matumo Mukhuba in the 43rd minute.

Titshidze Matodzi scored by his team's third goal, after the Matika keeper missed the ball.

Matika scored their second goal when Matha Ratshilaya found the back of the net.

Arsenal destroy Matika FC’s hopes

There were some interesting National First Division results over the past weekend, with three matches ending goalless.

Things did not go according to plan for the team of the Uni-versity of Pretoria. They were unexpectedly held to a goalless draw by FC AK at the Eldorado Park Stadium. Amatuks are still leading the pack.

Blackburn Rovers continued to pave their up when they col-lected the maximum points at the expense of FC Cape Town,

whom they beat 2-0. They are tied with Blackburn Rovers at 18 points, although Rovers have a match in hand.

After squandering numerous scoring chances in the last half, the coach of Thanda Royal Zulu, Neil Tovey, watched in disbelief as his boys left the pitch after playing to a goalless draw with Bay United at the Seshego Sta-dium on Saturday.

Vasco Da Gama also kept their title hopes alive. They beat Carara Kicks 3-2.

A 90th -minute strike by Andile Mbenyane saw Chippa United register a home victory against Atlie FC at the Philipi Stadium in Cape Town.

Mpumalanga Black Aces have reason to celebrate. They beat Witbank Spurs 1-0 in their Mpumalanga derby at the Acker-ville Stadium in Witbank.

Dynamos disappointed their home supporters by sharing the spoils with African Warriors, following their goalless draw at the Giyani Stadium.

All the National First Division results

Gudani Makhado of United Stars kicks the ball, while Shumani Chauke of All Stars is ready to attack.

Dumasi All Stars collected three points at the expense of Mbilwi United Stars when they crushed them 1-0 in their SAB League match at Dumasi on Sunday.

The game was characterized by rough tackles from both sides. The referee, Mr Dion Mphuma, did not allow any culprit to go unpunished.

He flashed nine yellow cards and a red one in a bid to calm the situation. The first player to go into the referee’s book was Nyambuluwo Ramashidzha of United Stars. His offence was a late tackle on Mphireleni Mugwevheni. United Stars realised that it was not their day when their left flank, Gudani Makhado, missed a fortune in the 18th minute. Instead of relaxing on the ball and trying other possible ways, Makhado shot aimlessly from close range.

Shumani Chauke of Dumasi All Stars handled the ball intentionally and the referee was lenient enough to let him go with yellow when everyone thought he would see red.

The goal that separated the boys from the men came seven minutes before the half-time whistle. Gumani Tshifaro caught the United Stars’ keeper off-guard and unleashed a rocket from the penalty area.

Things turned against Dumasi All Stars in the 67th minute. Their midfielder, Ntsieni Munge, was given his marching orders for a second bookable offence.

Zwivhuya Mahada of All Stars, who came on as a substitute, was reprimanded with a card for wasting time late in the game.

1-0 Victory for Dumasi All Stars

The acting mayor of the Makhado municipality, Cllr Jeaneth Matumba, officially opened the new office of the Masana Social & Development centre at Louis Trichradt last Friday. The centre is situated at 58 Munnik street. In the photo, Cllr Matumba is seen cutting the ribbon. On the right are Calvin Lishivha and the CEO of Masana, Ntsandeni Muladi. On the left is Albert Muvhumbe.

Rural communities urged to protect land

Prisoners make a meaningful contribution

New police boss for Limpopo

Residents of the deep rural communities of Tshamulungwi and Tshitandani in Mutale were urged to look after the land, so that the area’s natural resources can be conserved.

Cllr Lucas Manyuha of the Vhembe District Municipality, who represented MEC Depuo Letsatsi-Duba, was speaking at the Tshitandani village sports grounds during the Limpopo Provincial Land Care Day Cel-ebration on Thursday.

Manyuha said that the govern-ment’s Land Care programmes had shifted from the old tendency of focusing on small isolated projects, to an area that recogniz-es the catchments or a watershed or river basin.

“Limpopo province is en-

dowed with abundant agricul-tural resources and it is one of the country’s prime agricultural regions noted for its production of livestock, fruits, vegetables, cereal and tea. We would like to see every land user take part and become involved in using these responsibly and protect-ing our natural resources,” said Manyuha.

The theme of this year’s pro-vincial Land Care Day was “Towards Community Adop-tion of Management of Natural Resources”

Manyuha added that the gov-ernment was in favour of the protection of agricultural land from non-agricultural uses in the interest of improved food pro-duction. He said the Department

of Agriculture in the province was currently implementing 15 projects in the 15 municipalities, focusing in soil conservation, wetland management and veld management.

The Manager of Land Care Programmes in the province, Mr Mpfariseni Netshikovhela, said the department also had junior land care programmes in which they engaged young leaners and young people in the communities to play an active role in ensuring the safe future of their environment. “We used to send pupils from various schools to learn more about our land care programmes at the Madzivhandila Agricultural College in Thohoyandou, so that they could learn how to preserve

They are in prison for having offended the community. They have done their time and are about to be released. They are now sorry for the pain they have caused the community.

To show that they are remorse-ful, offenders wanted to show it practically by contributing to their community.

Recently, they embarked on a clean-up campaign in con-junction with prison officials from Thohoyandou Manage-ment Area, Thulamela municipal workers and the local taxi associ-ation.The 30 offenders drew a lot of attention and were soon joined by members of the community in cleaning the Mvusuludzo Taxi Rank in Thohoyandou. They also cleaned the toilets at the taxi rank. The activities formed part of the Corrections Week cel-

ebrations. “We are very excited. We have proved a point to the community that, irrespective of our being prisoners, we can still make a meaningful contribution to our communities when we are released.

“We were also made even hap-pier by the reaction and reception we got from the community. It was very positive and it gives us hope that when we are released they will be ready to accept us back,” commented one of the prisoners, who wanted to remain anonymous.

He said prison has exposed them to many skills that they would be able to use to make an honest living. “We have changed and we are well equipped and ready to face the challenges out-side. We can still make amends and make a meaningful contribu-

tion to our communities,” he said. The acting area commissioner

at Thohoyandou Management Area, Ms Annida Moeketsi, who was part of the group, seized the opportunity to address the masses that had gathered at the rank and were deligheted to see prisoners outside the walls of the prison.

She said that correction was a societal responsibility that needed everyone to participate. She called on the masses in the taxi rank to start involving themselves and do their part in correctional matters. “As Correc-tional Services alone we do not even dream of making our core business of correcting offenders work, but together with you as a community, we can achieve our goals. Let us hold hands for the betterment of our society,” she said.

The MEC for Safety, Security and Liaison, Mr George Phadagi, officially announced the appointment of Major-General B M Ntlemeza as acting provincial police com-missioner for Lim-popo.

Ntlemeza’s appoint-ment took effect on Oc-tober 1, until such time as a permanent appoint-ment is made.

Ntlemeza steps into the boots of Lieuten-an t -Genera l Amon Mashigo, who was the provincial commission-er for Limpopo until he left the South African Police Service at the end of September af-ter 34 years of service. Mashigo left behind a province with the low-est crime statistics in the country. Shortlisting for a permanent replace-ment has been done and interviews will be con-ducted in the middle of October. It is hoped that an appointment will be made by the beginning of either November or December this year.

land at an early age. We are worried much about people destroying wetlands by building in the wetlands, engaging in careless veld fires, deforestation by chop-ping trees and clearing of virgin forest,” said Netshikovhela.

Netshikovhela also handed over 15 certifi-cates of responsibility to local traditional lead-ers in the Rammbuda and Thengwe Tribal Authorities in Vhembe, where the department has helped to rehabili-tate the degraded re-sources like eroded soil and damage to fences.

Mayor Tshitereke Matibe (left), joined by Thovhele Azwihangwisi Rammbuda and Thovhele Vudzidzhena Nethengwe, hands over certificates of responsibility to local traditional leaders.

Tough life for well-known Zim singer

Aggrieved ... Musician Simungemunge says the police have let him down.

For some, fame comes with good things in life. For this talented artist, it has brought misery and misfortune.

Zimbabwean born Elliot Gwafa (28), known as Si-mungemunge in music circles, says misfortune and bad luck have followed him since the release of his debut album, Ma-gumaguma (which is a type of gangster from Zimbabwe who rob and kill people).

Gwafa, who is from Harare but is now residing at Mule-dane Block M, says he has not enjoyed his fame. His music is believed to have infuriated gangsters, who are now target-ing him, thinking he has lots of money.

“I am being targeted for my stand against crime. People also

think I made a lot of money from the sale of my album. Thieves, Magumaguma and robbers are having a field day with my belongings,” he says.

He says he has recently been targeted twice and he was left with only with the clothing he was wearing. He says he report-ed the matter to the police, but nothing has been done so far.

He suffered yet another rob-bery when he was robbed in broad daylight on Saturday. “I lost my phone and money and I immediately went to the police station and reported the matter.” He says he was very happy when police took him to the scene where the incident happened and found the thugs. “I am deeply disappointed. I lost money and my phone and

the thugs were still there, but the police decided not to act. Till today I have not gotten my things back,” adds a sad Gwafa.

He says instead of appre-hending the thugs, police just called them to the side of the road and ordered them to apolo-gize for what they have done. “I did not accept their apology as I wanted them to be arrested and my things to be brought back,” he says.

He had an argument with the police and he finally ended up not receiving any help. The thugs were also released without having been arrested or his belongings being returned to him. Thohoyandou police spokesperson Captain Mashudu Malelo says the matter has not come to their attention as man-

agement. “We always encourage members of the community to approach senior of-ficials at our station, even the station com-missioner, if they do not feel satisfied about the service they get from our members.”

Malelo says they have no room for cor-rupt police and if that it is the case, they are going to deal with the officers who might have acted improp-erly.

“We will investi-gate, and if there was any wrongdoing, we will take the appropri-ate steps,” he says.

Mr Samuel Mathalise, husband of the well-known television and radio actor and councillor of the Vhembe District, Maggy Mathalise, was buried at the Tshavhalovhedzi graveyard on Saturday. He died after a long illness. In our photo, Cllr Mathalise (back left) and her children pose at the tombstone after the funeral.

Dave Brothers from Eltivillas, Louis Trichardt, showed their support for the Springboks’ game against Samoa on Friday, September 30, by dressing in the team’s colours. The management sponsored all the staff members with Springbok shirts. Photo supplied.

Dynamos donate points to Western Stars

Gwamasenga Brothers destroy Liverpool

Madombidzha Western Stars strengthened their position in the Safa Vhembe SAB League Stream E when they beat Tshiozwi Dynamos 3-2 in a tough match played at Madombidzha on Sunday.

Although two of their key players went into the referee’s book in the opening minutes, Dynamos continued to fight as an organised team. The two players who were cautioned with cards for rough tackling were Marks Mavhandu and Mpho Net-shiendeulu of Dynamos.

The visiting side came close to scoring in the 8th minute, but Mpho Mavhandu shot over the crossbar with only the keeper left. The visitors scored from a corner from Marks Mavhandu’s header from a kick taken by Mashudu Nengovhela in the 20th minute. Their celebration was cut short, as Lufuno Ndou scored from a free kick.

The home team would have had only themselves to blame had they lost the match. They abused countless scoring opportunities in the first half. Dynamos increased the margin when Alugumi Mamugudubi scored a beautiful goal that left keep-er Tshimanagdzo Masala stranded. The scoreboard was reading 2-1 in favour of Dynamos at half time.

The visitors left Vhutshilo Mafunisa in the dress-ing room and brought on Phakhamani Ramatsitsi. The Stars came back strongly in the last half. They continue to mount pressure on the defence of the opponents. Percy Munonoka passed the ball to the advancing Lufuno Ndou of Stars, whose balloon landed in the roof of the net to make the score 2-2.

Dynamos replaced Muhangwi Mukosi and Alu-gumi Mamugudubi with Tendani Ramabulana and Patson Mahanelo late in the match.

pound for pound in the first half, but their stamina vanished as the game progressed.

It took United Brothers nine minutes to open their account.

Their fast forward, Mashudu Malusha, made no mistake, following a beautiful pass from Os-car Mulangaphuma. The visitors from Dzwerani village did not waste much time before retaliat-ing. Their solitary goal came in the 18th minute. Fhulufhelani Mudau found the net after a scramble within the box.

Liverpool came close to scoring again when Khuthadzo Mushadu’s volley missed the target by inches. The home side was leading 2-1 at the end of the first half.

They took the lead in the 37th minute. Avhapfani “Makita” Munyai unleashed a powerful shot from outside the box. The keeper of Liverpool, Alert Madiba, misjudged the flight of the ball before watching it go beyond his reach.

Liverpool looked hopeless in the last half. Oscar Mulangaphuma scored the third for United Broth-ers with a ground cutter. Rudzani Mudzunga of Liverpool was booked for a late tackle on Rofhiwa Ganyane. Avhapfani Munyai was on target again in the 59th minute.

Realising that all fingers were pointing at him for the Brothers’ four goals, the keeper of Liverpool, Alert Madiba, requested to be replaced. Phanuel Mulaudzi took over as his substitute. That did not stop United Brothers from scoring their fifth goal. Lesley Khomola hit the target in the 78th minute to make it 5-1.

Khathutshelo Mufamadi of Liverpool controls the high ball, while Rendani Sitholimela of United Brothers pulls him from behind.

The draw for the Telkom Knock-out Competition was held at the Wanderers Sports Club in Johan-nesburg on Monday morning.

It remains to be seen whether Black Leopards will manage to pro-ceed to the next round of the annual competition.

Difficult Telkom-hurdle for Leopards

They will lock horns with Orlando Pirates in their opening match. To make matters worse for Lidoda Duvha, it will be an away fixture for them.

It will be time for Leopards to exact sweet revenge for what Pi-rates did to them in their opening league match and the final for the Nedbank Cup at the Mbom-bela Stadium in Nelspruit four months ago. Leopards lost 1-3 to The Buccaneers in the fi-nal of the Nedbank Cup and gave away league points to the same team, following their 0-2 defeat.

The captain of Leopards, Mongezi Bobe, says Pirates will be shocked to the bone if they take the Limpopo side for granted.
