Obituary

By Elmon Tshikhudo

The late Robert Takalani.

“The night before his death, Takalani and I had agreed that he would take charge of the school on Monday while I was away attending a meeting at Mbilwi. He did not show any signs of stress.”

These were the words of the principal of Lwamondo Second-ary School, Mr Tshimangadzo Tshubwana, after learning of the death of one of his trusted and most loved teachers, Mr Robert Takalani.

Takalani (49) of Tshisahulu was the first deputy principal at the school and also a teacher in accounting. It is suspected that he shot himself in the head in the early hours of Monday morning.

Details about the incident are still sketchy as no one of the family and friends knows what made him take his life. The inci-dent that has left the community of Tshisahulu and Lwamondo Secondary School plunged into deep sadness. The morale at the school, which attained a 100% pass rate in the 2013 Grade 12 examinations, was at an all-time low.

Traumatised pupils cried un-controllably when the sad news

was broken to them. The school had to seek the services of a pro-fessional, Dr Maxwell Masako-na, who counselled them before they were released to go home.

Tshubwana was one of the first people to know about the incident. He received a call in the early hours of Monday morning, informing him of the death of his colleague. “I rushed to his house to find that he was dead. He had a bullet wound in his head,” said Tshubwana.

“This is a great loss; the m a n w a s a hard worker. He was my pil-lar of strength, who was al-ways ready to go the extra mile when it came to doing things for this school.

We worked very hard to-

gether and he was part of the team that ensured our successes in the 2013 Grade 12 examinations.”

When Limpopo Mirror visited the school on Monday morning, the whole school had received counselling.

Shock as teacher commits suicide

Vho-Murena Muelelwa Frans Mukwevho will be remembered for his laugher and humility.

Beloved village grandfather Vho-Murena passes awayIn the early hours of Sunday morning, the word spread through Madombidzha village, announcing the passing away of a village father and church elder who was known for his sense of humour.

Those who received the news that Muelelwa Frans Mukwevho (84) had passed away in the Louis Trichardt Memorial Hospital shed tears when they realised that they would not hear his laughter

and jokes again. Mukwevho, who was affectionately known as Vho-Murena, spent his childhood at Muhodi and later relocated to Madombidzha with his family. He worked at Bandelierkop and Makhado and later at a filling station and motor repairs in Gauteng.

When he returned home in the mid-1990s, he would answer to people's greeting with the word 'Murena!' (My Lord). As a re-

sult, friends and grandchildren nicknamed him Murena.

“We have lost a father and grandfather,” said the deceased’s son, Mushoni Mukwevho. “We watched Vho-Murena grappling with pain in his hospital bed, but he remained strong. We will always remember him for his good works in the community.” Vho-Murena was an elder in the United African Apostolic Church (UAAC) in Madombidzha Zone

2. Speakers at the daily one-hour service described him as a humble man with understanding and re-spect for all people.

“Vho-Murena would kneel before a child in the church to demonstrate how we should love and respect one another,” said Juffrou Ratshibaye of the UAAC branch in Dzanani II. She told the mourners that she had cried a lot on hearing that Vho-Murena had passed away. “But we shouldn't be crying,” she said. “We need to celebrate his life in song and dance.”

Vho-Murena is survived by his two wives, chil-dren, grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. He will be laid to rest at Madombidzha cemetery on Saturday. The service will start at 06:00.

Disciplinary hearing for nurses after death of 19-month-oldThe three nurses who were on duty at Kha-khu Clinic when the grandmother of the sick 19-month-old baby was turned away to go home, will attend a disciplinary hearing this week.

According to the dead child’s parents, Mr Mashudu and Mrs Mumsy Mulaudzi, the Depart-ment of Health will later provide the family with a detailed report on the outcome of the hearing. “I received a call this week, notifying me about the hearing and that we shouldn’t worry as the outcome report would be communicated to us,” Mr Mulaudzi said on Tuesday. “We just pray they speed up the process. Our baby died because health workers refused to help.”

This case made newspaper headlines late last year, when news of the baby who had died after nurses had allegedly turned him and his guardian away spread through Vhembe like wildfire. The

child’s guardian and grandmother, Vho-Reginah Mulaudzi, had rushed Mulalo to the Khakhu clinic on 5 October, after she had noticed that he had a high fever and was vomiting. She was allegedly turned away because the three nurses on duty were helping a woman in labour.

Baby Mulalo was only attended to the following morning, but died two hours later. Mulalo’s moth-er, Mumsy, said that the clinic’s attitude towards patients had caused her son’s death. “I want to believe that, if he had been helped, my child would still have been alive,” she said.

Insults and threats spoil TAC meeting

Water project at Nyavani

Guilty of negligent handling of firearm

The gathering for the Treatment Action Cam-paign’s People’s Health Manifesto last Wednes-day, was partly spoiled by insults and personal threats from some individuals. The event was held at the Giyani Arts Centre.

Water shortages may soon be a thing of the past for the rural Nya-vani communities near Malamule-le, due to the launching of an R8,9 million water project.

The project, which started in Febru-ary and is expected to be completed in October, is set to benefit villages such as are Nyavani, Sasekani, Fharatonga and Dlamini.

“Water is a source of life and without water life is a nightmare.

We used to spend most of our time walking long distances and queuing for water,” said Ms Johanna Ngoveni of Nyavani village.

The project has thus far employed 30 local people.

According to Mr Vhutshilo Mavhungu, the project site manager, pipes will be erected in streets and this will enable people to walk only 200 metres to fetch water, which is in accordance with the RDP standards.

A former policeman, Mr Takalani Makhaga (75), was sentenced to five years in custody or to pay fine of R20 000 on a charge of the negligent handling of a firearm.

The case was finalised in the Vuwani Magis-trate’s Court on Tuesday.

Makhaga was arrested last November, after his grandson had stolen his pistol from his car and allegedly shot and killed his girlfriend and her mother in cold blood. Makhaga was also declared unfit to handle a firearm.

His grandson, Hulisani Makhaga (20), who faces two charges of murder and theft of a firearm, will appear in court again on 4 April for trial.

The TAC had invited the community around Gi-yani and representatives from political parties. The purpose of the event was for the political parties to answer 11 questions tabled in the People’s Health Manifesto, so that the public could make informed decisions when going to the polls on 7 May.

“All things were going well inside the hall,” said TAC’s provincial coordinator, Mr Amukelani Maluleke. “But when we walked out, some cadres within the ANC showed political intolerance about the Vote Health Not Corruption statement printed on our T-shirts. They said we were attacking their political party. We are very concerned about this kind of political immaturity.”

Maluleke added that they were not trying to at-tack or insult any political party with the statement. “That’s just our key theme in addressing the health system challenges we are faced with,” he said. “We are engaging the political party concerned to deal with these insults and threats.”

Maluleke said that the primary reason for the People’s Health Manifesto was to take a first step to the foundation of the TAC’s advocacy work to hold the government accountable after the elections.

“I should say that, as organisation, we are on the right track because we will propose a meeting again with the winning party to remind them of their promises,” he explained.

“We will call another general meeting with the other political parties to join hands with us, so as to realise a health system and strengthen it as a civil movement.”

Giyani residents attended the People’s Health Manifesto meeting in large numbers.

Limpopo Dairy wins coveted awardLimpopo Dairy made local history last Wednesday (19 March) by winning the coveted National Master Dairy Farmer of the Year Award for 2013.

Mr Joubert Fourie, one of the directors of this well-known business, explained proudly that this award is the highest that any dairy farmer in the country can receive. Adjudication is done by the Master Dairy Farmer Organisation, which was established specifically to evaluate the quality of the products of all dairy farmers at regional and national level.

Dairy farmers – those who farm with dairy cows and milk them – send milk samples and the accompanying figures to the organisation every five weeks. These samples are analysed and a report is sent back to the farmer. The milk is test-ed for butter fat, protein, the milk-uria-nitrogen content and somatic cell counts.

A number of finalists are chosen in each region. These finalists are then each visited by a whole team of specialists who come to evaluate various aspects of the operation. The team looks at aspects such as breeding, hygiene, financial matters, feeding, and herd maintenance, and also make a general, global assessment. Each one writes a report and awards marks after the day-long visit.

The regional winner is determined according to these reports and goes through to the national final. The five regional winners compete there and a national winner is chosen by a committee specifically appointed for that purpose. This year,

Construction workers at Nyavani, busy installing water pipes.

The team that made it possible for Limpopo Dairy to win the coveted National Master Dairy Farmer of the Year Award for 2013. At the back, from left to right, are Joubert Fourie, Ronnie Mudzanani, Adel Smit, Petro and Willa Vorster. In front are Alina Kwinda, Phineas Marubini, Solomon Ndou and Liebram Makoena.

Limpo Dairy repre-sented the Northern Region (North West,

Gauteng, Mpumalanga and Limpopo Province) at national level and walked off with the prize. Joubert is quick to point out that the award was only won through God’s grace and the hard work of his dedicated, competent team. Part of his team are Willa Vorster, the herd manager, and his wife, Petro, who is like a “mother” to the cows. Adel Smit has the important job of collecting the data and keeping it up to date, which she performs admirably. The other supervisors, Alina Kwin-da, Phineas Marubini, Solomon Ndou, Ronnie Mudzanani and Liebram Makoena, each makes a valuable contribution to let things run smoothly.

The teams is obviously doing something right, because their product has not only won the national award, but several insititutions that perform agricultural and related research also want to conduct tests there to advance this highly specialised and scientific industry even more. This is only possible because the industry trusts their methods and figures.

Limpopo Dairy is currently in the process of building a new dairy, which means they will be able to perform even better in future. The current dairy runs 18 hours per day, with 700 Holstein cows being milked thrice a day at 26 milking points (about 120 per hour).

The new dairy will have 64 points, which will increase production to 380 cows per hour. On top of that, each cow will be weighed automatically and her feed intake is regulated according to her needs. Should a cow become sick, this will be detected much earlier because her milk produc-tion and feed intake will decrease – all as part of the process.

Grand Select employees demand better working conditionsThree months after returning to work, workers at the Grand Select Company in Shayandima have embarked on another strike to demand better sala-ries. This follows after their employer, who is contracted to Telkom, allegedly failed to address their grievances, which include low wages and unsafe working conditions.

The workers install underground and overhead cables, as well as aerials, and replace poles for Telkom in most parts of the Vhembe region. Some of the workers complain that they have been working for the company for almost 10 years and still receive a very basic salary. They spent the whole of last week sitting at the company’s office in Shayandima, hoping to attract the attention of their employer.

Mr Takalani Ratshilivha, the foreman,

said the payment was too little and did not comply with the minimum amount required by Labour Law. “Last year, our boss promised to increase our salaries by 15% in the second week of January, which did not happen,” he said. He said numerous attempts were made to convince the local labour office to intervene, but to no avail.

According to the workers they met with their boss the previous Thursday and he promised to get back to them, but since their last meeting he has never returned. “He told us that he would increase our salaries by R200, but that was not our initial agreement,” said Mr Ratshilivha. Talking to Limpopo Mirror last Wednes-day, workers said their employer had only called the foreman, instructing him to tell them to go back to work. At least 22

workers who were on strike vowed not to go back to work until their disputes have been resolved. Workers also accused their employer of giving them payslips which reflected a different amount from what they were receiving.

A father of six and the sole breadwinner, Mr Jeffrey Khorombi (49), is a driver at Grand Select and earns R1 800 a month. Like other employees, he works for at least nine-and-a-half hours a day and six days a week. He has been working at the company for more than ten years now. He stays in Shayandima Township and he has to pay municipal rates on a monthly basis. He says his salary makes it difficult for him to maintain his family. “It is like I am not working. When I get home with dusty clothes, it is even worse to explain to my wife that I am coming from work,”

he said. Workers also complain about not hav-ing proper safety equip-ment such as boots and helmets and they have to buy uniforms with their own money. “It is like volunteering and your employer compen-sates you with that little money to buy lunch at the end of the month,” said Jan Molemo (51). Limpopo Mirror made numerous attempts to get a comment from the employer. Voicemails and text messages were sent to the employer, Mr Zachariah Bopape, but to no avail. He in-itially said he was too busy to talk and he later switched off his phone.

Workers at Grand Select in Shayandima are demanding better payment and improved working conditions.

Unknown body found floating in the Damani DamThe rural community of Damani village received a shock last week-end, following the discovery of an unknown man floating in the Damani Dam.

Thohoyandou police spokesper-son Major Mashudu Malelo said that the man was suspected to be in his early fifties and was found floating in a dam early on Sunday morning.

“The community members in-formed us about the shocking discovery and our divers arrived at the scene, where they removed the body,” says Malelo.

“There seems to be nothing unusual as the body was still intact.

There is also no visible injury and the deceased was fully dressed. We are still going to conduct a post mortem,” he says.

“We are humbly appealing to the community members to help us establish the identity of this man. As of now, we have just opened an inquest docket as we do not know what caused his death.”

The Damani Dam is one of the major sources of water to the com-munities of Damani, Khubvi, Ma-konde and other villages. Recently, more than R60 million was used by the Vhembe District Municipality to upgrade the dam in order to address water shortages in the area.

Curios members of the community looking at the body of the unknown man, that was found floating in the Damani Dam on Sunday.

Title deed of Vleifontein 310 LS and Slag Farm now with CPAThe Department of Rural Develop-ment and Land Reform has handed over the title deed of Vleifontein 310 LS Farm and Slag Farm to the Mavungeni Communal Property Association.

Speaking during the hand-over cer-emony held at Slag Farm on Saturday, the Limpopo land commissioner, Mr Tele Maphoto, said the CPA should work with Chief Nthabalala to ensure development in the area.

Maphoto said members of the CPA should refrain from using the title deed for personal gain.

He said the CPA should accelerate development on the claimed land and ensure that all community members were benefiting.

“Chief Nthabalala should know about every development happening here; we should not come back to settle disputes.”

He added that the department was resolving the fracas of land invasion by utilising the court system and the illegal occupants would be evicted peacefully.

The CPA claimed the land in 2001 and successfully acquired it in 2002. Since then, they have been working on the land without the necessary title deed. During the settlement in 2002, the CPA was only given a registration certificate by the land commissioner. The absence of a title deed resulted in the challenge of land invasions.

A large number of people occu-pied the land illegally after a former member of the CPA, who knew that there was no title deed, allegedly sold stands to people.

The CPA tried to remove those

people, but did not succeed. The Department of Rural De-

velopment and Land Reform then intervened.

Late last year, the matter of land invasion was addressed by the North Gauteng High Court.

Following that ruling, the CPA was adamant that they would successfully remove all illegal occupants from the farm. The land invasion has also impacted negatively on the running of the farm.

“We were no longer working ac-cording to the business plan, since most parts of the farm had been invad-ed,” said David Baloyi, the general secretary of the CPA.

The CPA uses the restitution farm (Vleifontein 310 LS) for projects such as macadamia farming, vegetable farming, poultry, and bee farming. “We have registered co-operatives and hire people to work at the farm. Those people are paid monthly,” he said.

The chairperson of the CPA, Mr Michael Baloyi, said the CPA was operating in a professional manner. The body has audited financial state-ments and regularly files tax returns with SARS.

He said, however, that the govern-ment should deliver on its promises. “We have lots of challenges here and the government has promised to address most of them, but nothing has happened,” he said.

The MEC for Safety and Security, Ms Joyce Mashamba, said the CPA and the chief should develop creative ideas and ensure that members of the community were benefiting.

Mr Nyiko Nghatsane received the popular IQA (International Quality Award) from Mr Arno Combrinck for the third time. This award is presented to advisers for sustained exceptional production and delivering quality business over a long period. He also received an award for writing 15 policies or more per month. He was also one of Sanlam Limpopo’s top 10 advisers of the year.

During Sanlam Limpopo’s yearly awards function, recently held at the Tzaneen Country Lodge, Mr Justice Mashele (right) received an award from a sales consultant, Mr Arno Combrinck, for writing more than 15 policies per month.

Handing over the title deed are, from left to right, Ms Grace Mashamba (MEC for Safety and Security), Mr Michael Baloyi (CPA Chairperson), Vho-Thovhele Vhutshilo Nthabalala and a member of the Nthabalala Royal Council.

The chairperson of the CPA, Mr Michael Baloyi (left), signs the title deed while the provincial land claims commissioner, Mr Tele Maphoto (right), shows him where to sign.

The QuadPara Association of South Africa (QASA) has asked motorists to wear their seat belts this festive season in order to prevent spinal cord injuries in the event of a road accident!

“This Easter season, you will see quadriplegics and paraplegics deployed at eight garages on national roads to encourage mo-torists to wear their seat belts,” said the CEO of QASA, Mr Ari

Seirlis, in a media statement. He added that motorists would

be approached by quadriplegics and paraplegics and asked to sign a pledge to “buckle up” and, in return, they would receive a free license disk sticker. Forty members of QASA have been employed for this project “and the association is proud to be part of this road-safety initiative as part of our commitment to the

prevention of spinal cord inju-ries,” he added. More than 900 people get spinal cord injuries per annum in South Africa and half of these from road accidents.

This campaign received the SA Guild of Motoring Journalists’ Road Safety Project of the Year award. This year, the campaign is supported by the Road Accident Fund, AVIS and the Cannonball Run event.

“Wheelbarrow dancer” turns headsIn 2005, the village of Ma-konde-Shadani outside Tho-hoyandou became known to many South Africans because of the brutal ritual murder of a local soccer star, Maanda Sendedza. The village has now produced a zealous young lady who carries a wheelbarrow with her teeth.

To someone who does not know her, Andani Rambofheni is just an ordinary 21-year-old girl who does not have a distinc-tive posture, but the power in her teeth makes her the darling of bemused spectators who en-joy seeing her perform her act wherever she goes.

She quickly dismisses the allegations that she uses muti for her performance. “The people who spread rumours that I am using muti are just jealous of my success. God has given every person a talent in this world and it only depends on the individual

how he or she uses the talent. Let them talk; they will never take my talent away and I will continue to entertain people until my last day.”

Andani, who is in Grade 10 at David Mutshinyalo High, said she started her wheelbar-row act in 2012. “It just came to my mind that I should do something unique to make a name for myself. It took me approximately three months to be perfect and I used to rehearse alone in my room.” Her first public performance was during a party in her village, when she was overwhelmed by emotion because the local dancers were not impressive. “I then request-ed a wheelbarrow and started dancing while I carried it with my teeth, and everyone was impressed. Since then, everyone respects me for my talent and local people always invite me to dance during their parties, but I

don’t charge them any fees for now.” Andani says she wants to take her talent to a professional level. “I want someone who can assist me to get professional shows, so that I can get some income to assist my unemployed parents. I think the wheelbarrow dancing style can be a hit in the ever-growing music industry.”

Andani’s father, Richard Rambofheni, says he is very proud of his daughter. “I was not aware at first but people used to tell me that my daughter had a special talent. One day I went to see her performing at a party and I was very impressed. We just need someone who can take her dream further.”

Community members who want to assist Andani to be a professional wheelbarrow danc-er or who want her to perform at their events can visit her at Makonde Shadani or call 073 196 5797.

At his arrival in Qingdao in China, La-zaros they had to endure many challenges. “From the beginning it was very hard, with huge waves, rain, lightning, and tempera-ture changes. At the start it was very warm, and in the end it was freezing. So it was tough, always tough, but very stimulating and rewarding.”

He added that he had gained a lot during the race. “Personally, it has shaped me in various ways. Most importantly, work-ing with different people from different countries and all the new things I have seen and done.”

The initiative is funded by the Sapinda group, an investment holding company, with particular focus on Sub-Saharan Africa. Mr Dirk van Daele, Sapinda ex-ecutive committee member and CEO of Anoa Capital, participated in the 2009/10 edition of the race and saw how it de-veloped young people from around the world in building their confi dence and leadership skills.

Vulnerable children treated to farm lifeThe Vondeling Farm, situated on the Elim-Makhado road, was turned into a huge play-ground of joy when children from the Litshani Vhana Vha-De Foundation celebrated the centre’s fifth birthday on Friday and Saturday.

The proprietor of Vondeling Farm, Mr Kennedy Maimela, donated the accommodation and playground for at least 80 children and their caretakers. The children’s confidence was evident in the art performances which they rendered, such as poetry, drama, speeches and singing.

The executive director of Tip-fuxeni Community Counselling Centre in Elim, Ms Thokozile Ei-

ster, interacted with the children for about two hours. She started by educating them on their rights.

Litshani Vhana Vha-De Foun-tain takes care of 112 children. The organisation is not exempt from crucial challenges faced by any non-profit organisations in the country; one of the challenges is funding to ensure the smooth running of the organisation.

The foundation renders de-velopmental and social welfare services to orphans and vulner-able children in the Thulamela Municipality. The organisation’s director, Ms Bridgette Mamu-gubudi, said the organisation serves children with a nutritious meal every day and provides recreational activities. “We are

planning to a build children’s home and hospice at Gondeni Sterkstroom village.”

According to Mamugubudi, the organisation has had some great achievements in the past five years. “We assisted in raising the money for the operation on a 13-year-old girl, Mulamuleli, who suffers from glaucoma,” she recalled. The organisation’s director, Ms Mamugudubi, was awarded the Inyathelo Award for Community Philanthropy in recognition of excellence and leadership in personal South African philanthropy.

Champion of Charity raises thousands for the needy

“Respect cyclists”I am very disappointed with the way motorists

are not respecting cyclists on the roads here in South Africa.

On Saturday, 22 March, at around 15:00, my father, Norman Thavhana, who currently works at SNS Tyre Retreaders, was hit by a car at the N1/Elim crossing by a driver who ignored the stop sign. My father was busy with his usual practise ride to Adam’s Apple. Miraculously, he only sustained a sprained ankle and a couple of bruises. He was then taken to the Louis Trichardt private hospital and he is recovering very well.

I think South Africa should toughen up on law enforcement to prevent these accidents from happening. The annual Kremetart race is getting closer and many more cyclists will fall prey to such drivers if we don’t create awareness cam-paigns for cyclists to avoid bad drivers.

- Takalani Tony Thavhana, Makhado (Louis Trichardt)

Champion of Charity (CoC) raised more than R270 000 for the needy during a fundraising gala dinner at the Makhado Multi-Purpose Centre last Saturday evening.

The event was attended by Cllr Lucy Mulaudzi of the Vhembe District Munici-pality, Muvhango actor Gabriel Temudza-ni, gospel star Takie Ndou, former Makha-do Mayor David Muladi and several other dignitaries. Among those who donated for the needy were twin brothers Ndumiso and Xolani Sithole from Nkandla village in Kwazulu Natal, who pledged R100 000. A young businessman from Vhembe, who chose to remain anonymous, contributed R10 000. He also pledged to contribute R5 000 every month and R100 000 every

year.CoC founder and president Pastor

Petrus Mamuhohi said the money would help to “bring total equality in every sphere of life to the needy. Different as-pects of life, education included, need to be visited. Our government needs support from community structures which are based in places where people’s needs are screaming aloud daily,” says Mamuhohi.

CoC was established in 2005 after it was noted that the youth, especially those raised in poor families, needed support, so that they could reach their dreams. Nearly 30 benefitted from a CoC bursary last year. “Most students receiving our bursaries are orphans. We also

provide parental care to our beneficiaries, among them students who are raised by single mothers. In this regard, it becomes education with emotional healing,” says Mamuhohi.

CoC also assists drop-in centres around Vhembe. The drop-in centres address the needs of orphans and vulnerable children. Mamuhohi says he was very happy about all the people who supported the CoC. He also urged to anyone who wants to help to do so by depositing donations in the CoC’s FNB account, number: 62425 253 424.

Messrs Ndumiso and Xolani Sithole.

Muraleni shock Oscar StarsRemember Earth Hour on Sunday Muraleni United broke the un-

beaten record of current log lead-ers Makhitha Oscar Stars on Sunday when they beat them 2-1 in a Safa Vhembe MMK Insurance Brokers match at Makhitha.

Stars initiated some promising moves from the centre of the pitch, but were denied a number of scoring opportunities by the solid defence of their opponents. The last 20 minutes of the first half, United played like a house on fire, with their midfielders distributing some telling passes to the strikers. They threatened to score but failed to break through the solid defence of their opponents.

The scoreboard was still blank at the end of the first 45 minutes, despite numerous attempts from both sides.

United broke the deadlock in the 68th minute. The former Stars fast forward, Duncan Maringa, won the

ball just behind the centre line, ran towards the right corner and dished up a square pass to Mutshutshu Mmbodi. He beat the Stars keeper, Faith Ratombo, with a ground cutter.

United introduced Rendani Mathavha and Nditsheni Faranani for Melton Nembidzane and Duncan Maringa respectively. Lucky Net-shivhera of Stars was booked for an infringement on Ronewa Muthambi.

Stars abandoned their position and packed themselves at the far back, but Rendani “Balo” Mathavha scored the second goal of his team. He unleashed a powerful shot from outside the box and beat the keeper easily.

After the goal, United lost shape in the midfield and Stars scored when Tiyiselani Sambu forced his way through the defence and released a rocket from outside the box late in the match.

Every year, on the last Saturday of March, the whole world is asked to switch off all non-essen-tial electrical appliances and lights for an hour, between 20:30 and 21:30, to lessen the impact of “civilisation” on the earth and its natural resources.

This year, WWF’s Earth Hour campaign will be calling on you to make your individual promise to the planet by asking the question, “How do you Honour the Earth?”

For seven years running, on the last Saturday of March, millions of people around the world have switched off their lights for Earth Hour as a sym-bolic gesture to show their commitment to taking positive actions for our planet.

Beyond the symbolic 60 minutes of darkness, Earth Hour has grown into a powerful, global, citi-zen-driven movement of progressive change for the environment. Recent examples of bold innovation and collective action have demonstrated the power of Earth Hour to effect lasting and tangible change across the globe.

Earth Hour is an inspired opportunity to engage our hearts and minds and to reflect on, and renew, our commitments to making the planet a place where we and future generations may prosper. Although we are not always aware of it, our indi-vidual actions can, and do, have a great impact on our natural world.

This year, make a note and join the movement that will transform our planet. After all, you will be saving more than just electricity. (http://www.wwf.org.za/what_we_do/earth_hour_2014/)

Iyarunga in drawThe unpredictable Madodonga United played to 1-all draw against Makhitha Iyarunga in a thrilling MMK Insurance Brokers match at Makhitha on Sunday.

It was evident from the onset that Iyarunga were going to give United a tough time as they took the game to their opponents from the first whistle. They missed two chances before they finally got a goal in the 16th minute. Moses Mabeba beat the offside trap and scored easily.

Realizing that their opponents were beating them with pace, United started to display their rough skills in a bid to neutralise the aggressive Iyarunga’ strikers. The referee did not give them a chance to continue with their unbecoming conduct as he quickly flashed a yellow card to Donald Ramal-apa for obstruction. Norman Managa of Iyarunga was warned with a card for ignoring the referee’s whistle in the 64th minute.

United equalised through Donald Ramalapa, who received a brilliant pass from Malindi Ravhutsi. He unleashed a ground cutter from an awkward angle. Iyarunga’s keeper, Mashudu Maboko, could only watch the ball go beyond his reach.

That was an insult to the players of Iyarunga. They initiated numerous dangerous moves from behind, but they couldn’t find the back of the net for the winner.

Sydney Luvhengo of Stars and Khumbelo Rakhavha wait for the ball.

Malindi Ravhutsi and Norman Managa jump high to obtain possession of the ball.

Vuwani Masakona of Artists makes a sharp turn with the ball, while Rathete Sekota of Polokwane tackles him from behind.

Tshililo Mufamadi of Polokwane presses Samuel Mathebula of Artists down in their fight to win the ball.

United Artists maintain clean recordUnited Artists maintained their unbeaten record by crushing Polokwane United FC 4-0 in their MMK Funeral Services League match at the Makwarela Stadium on Sunday.

The youthful Polokwane team started the game like a house on fire, but their stamina faded with time. Realizing that it would be difficult for them to match the players of Polokwane in terms of skills, Artists used their height advantage to neutralize them in the middle of the park.

Artists took the lead in the 26th minute. The keeper of Polokwane, Phuti Kgopa, committed a suicidal mistake by advancing out of the penalty area in a bid to clear a back pass. Artists’ Rastafar-ian striker, Moses Luvhimbi, intercepted the pass and sent the ball into the empty net.

Polokwane realized that it was not their day when they missed a fortune in the 39th minute. They were awarded a penalty after Piet Maleka was brought down within the box. Dingaan Ledwaba shot wide from the spot.

Thomas “Razor” Makhubele scored the second goal with a header in the 58th minute after a cor-ner kick that was taken by Moses Luvhimbi. The keeper of Polokwane, Phuti Kgopa, was booked for handling the ball outside the penalty area. Artists then replaced Robert Baloyi and Samuel Matheb-ula with Jeffrey Mungoni and Dakalo Ravhura. Mungoni made his presence felt when he scored

the third with a header. Ravhura was on target late in the game, to bring the final score to 4-0.

Tshiadama Secondary win G5 tournamentPupils from different schools around Vhufuli in the Tshi-nane circuit were urged to take sport seriously, because sport can become a lucrative profession.

“We realise that many of the young people end up partici-pating in crime because they are bored after school,” said the marketing officer of the G5 Hire Company, Mr Avhakholwi

Nemavhola-Mphigalale. The company recently spon-

sored a week-long soccer tour-nament for various schools in Vhufuli and surrounding communities, such as Tshivhase, Tshadama,

Tshadama finished the tour-nament as the winner by beating Muhuyu wa Thomba 1-0 in the final.

They received a prize of R1

500 and a soccer ball.According to Nemavho-

la-Mphigalale, the schools tour-nament is the first of its kind and they are hoping to host another, bigger soccer tournament, co-inciding with a music festival during Easter.

The best player of the tourna-ment and captain of Tshadama secondary school, Adivhaho Makhesha, received R300.

The chairperson of Tshinane Circuit School Sports, Mr Fanie Mafune (left), hands over the trophy and cash prize to the captain of Tshadama Secondary, Adivhaho Makhesha, while Mr Judas Ntsieni (right), coach of Tshadama's school team, is holding a soccer ball.

Weather permitting, the Soutpansberg As-tronomy Club (SAC) will be at the CANSA Relay For Life in Makhado (Louis Trich-ardt) on Friday, 28 March.

Shortly after sunset, one of the giant gas planets, Jupiter, will be visible high up in the northwest. At around 21:30, the planet's giant red spot (GRS) will be earth-facing and can be seen. During the course of the early evening, the International Space Station will make a pass (18:48) as well as some of the brighter satellites. A list of these satellites will be available.

The fourth planet from the sun, Mars (where Curiosity is doing its thing), can be seen rising next to Spica, the brightest star in the constellation Virgo, in the east. At around 20:30 the second giant gas planet, Saturn, will clear the eastern horizon. In the early hours of Saturday, the "morning star" Venus, show-ing a lovely crescent phase, will be visible, followed by Mercury next to a thin sliver of a crescent Moon.

Depending on the light pollution, a host of deep-sky objects, from open clusters and globular clusters to nebulae and galaxies can be seen at the eyepiece or via live video on a screen.

For more information, Kos Coronaios can be contacted at 079 148 4934.

Joe’s Express tipped to stop Blue RocksIt will be another busy weekend for the teams affiliated to the Limpopo Stream of the Safa Second Division League.

The match not to be missed will be be-tween Joe’s Express and Blue Rocks at the Makwarela Stadium tomorrow afternoon. Blue Rocks will be fighting with the aim of reclaiming their leadership on the log. They dropped to the second spot after their 0-2 defeat at the hands of The Dolphins last Saturday.

The spirit is high in the camp of Joe’s Express, after holding Dynamos to a 2-2 draw last Saturday. Thembisani Nevhu-lamba and Edwin “Cafu” Ramphabana, who scored against Dynamos, are expected to give the Blue Rocks’ defence a run for their money. Dakalo “DK” Ratshitanga and Lucas Mashau will be marshaling the defence. Joel Maake, the Blue Rocks’ midfielder, who was out of action for three weeks as a result of injury, will be available for selection tomorrow.

Rospa United share the points

Leopards to collect more points in the Free State?

After losing two consecutive league matches, Rospa United made amends and held Winners Park to a 1-1 draw in their Safa Second Division League match at the Mahwelereng Stadium on Sunday. Velile “Berbeto” Mdaka scored for Rospa United, while Winners Park’s goal came via Herald Hlaole seven minutes into the last half.

Joe’s Express managed to come back home with a point in hand, following their 2-2 draw with Dynamos at the Bugersdorp Arti-ficial Turf. Thembisani Nevhulamba and Edwin “Cafu” Ramphabana scored for Joe’s Ex-press, while Dynamos retaliated through David Chauke and Eric Cha-balala. Joe’s moved up a step on the log, fol-lowing the result.

Things continued to move from bad to worse in the camp of Basel FC. They dropped points again when they lost 0-1 to Great North FC. Basel are still rooted at the bottom of the log with only six points. Phungo All Stars also donated points when they suffered a 0-1 defeat at the hands of Modimolle Aces on Sunday. Phungo All Stars are lying in sec-

ond-last position.Magezi FC are now leading the

pack, following their 4-0 victory over Mighty FC. Lephalale Young Killers were crushed 0-4 by Bellevue Win-ners Park. Blue Rocks, who have been leading the pack for the past months, dropped to the second position after losing 0-2 to The Dolphins. Giyani Hotspurs beat Ray Pillars 3-1-3 at the Seshego Stadium.

Rospa United’s goal scorer, Velile “Berbeto” Mdaka.

After blasting Sivutsa Stars 6-1 at the Giyani Stadium two weeks ago, Black Leopards are geared to collect more points this weekend.

They will undertake a journey to the Free State where they will fight for league points against Maluti FET College at the Charles Mopedi Stadium tomorrow. It remains to be seen whether Lidoda Duvha will con-tinue from where they left off in their first-round league match, which was played at the Peter Mokaba Stadium six months ago. Black Leopards then walloped the students 7-4.

Leopards will pin their hopes on their leading goal scorers, David

Zulu, Sanele Mkhize and Rendani Ndou for goals while their defenders, Dunga Munganga and Marks Munyai, will ensure that their danger area is al-ways clean. Maluti have nothing more than pride at stake, as they are on the safe side when it comes to relegation.

Thanda Royal Zulu will play in front of their home crowd. They will entertain Milano United at the Umhlathuze Sports Complex in Richards Bay. Royal Zulu, who were rooted at the bottom of the log for the first three months, are now a difficult side to beat. They managed to collect full points in their last five matches. Blackburn Rovers will not find it

easy to win although they will be playing at home. They will host the much-feared Jomo Cosmos at the Sugar Ray Zulu Stadium in Durban. Just like Thanda Royal Zulu, Cosmos have won their last five matches in a row.

Sivutsa Stars will lock horns with United FC at the Kabokweni Stadium in Nelspruit. Santos and Ros-es United will test each oth-er’s strength at the Athlone Stadium in Cape Town.

Sunday will see Wit-bank Spurs take on African Warriors at the Puma Rug-by Stadium in Witbank. Vasco da Gama and FC Cape Town will play at the Parow Park Stadium in Cape Town. The match of the week will be between Baroka FC and Chippa United at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium. Chippa United are currently lead-ing the pack, while Baroka are close behind in the second spot.

Leopards’ right back, Marks Munyai.

Leopards’ captain, Dunga Munganga.

“Sport will keep the youth focused”Kaizer Chiefs have embarked on a mission to identify talented young players and to motivate them to take their education and sports seriously. It hap-pened during a coaching clinic at Giyani last Wednesday.

The brand manager of Chiefs, Ms Jessica Motaung, said the idea of coaching clinics in the rural areas came about after they realised that a large portion of

the young generation was not participating in sport but was “embracing alcohol, drugs and unprotected sex. Most of them end up being drop-outs and not succeeding in life. Sport will keep them focused,” she added.

One of the Kaizer Chiefs sup-porters, Mr Victor “Maradona” Ratshibaya, was very happy that the current log leaders of the Premier League had visited

the area. He said sport played a very important role in developing the children. “Children who are involved in sport tend to perform well in class and we will have better results in the long run,” he said. One of the young players who attended the clinic, Ntwana-no Masingi, said that he learnt a lot from the Kaizer Chiefs crew. He said that his aim was to play in the high division.

Elderly people participate in health walkThe fourth annual 11km Sin-thumule/Kutama health walk was well attended last Fri-day. The walk started at the Tshilwavhusiku Police Station, from where it continued to Madombidzha.

Thovhele Khosi Vho-Rudzani Sinthumule, Cllr David Mu-tavhatsindi, the mayor of Makha-do, Station Commissioner Lt-Col Freddy Shirinda, religious leaders and other dignitaries led

the walk. Dr Vincent Mpilo, or-ganiser of the event, said that the main idea was to keep the people fit and teach them about health. He said the elderly were a true example to the young people and commended them for keeping fit.

Mayor Mutavhatsindi said that it was good to see members of the community engaging in exercise. He added that although the municipality had done a lot of things, he was aware that a lot of

challenges were still facing the community it served.

One of the elderly, Ms Mud-zunga Musia, said it was out of boredom that they started a soccer team. “The elderly are neglected. There are sports for other groups of people, but the government is not doing anything for us as elderly people. Keeping ourselves active is the best med-icine for the illnesses that affect us,” she said.

“We will fight to the bitter end” - Papic

Students too clever for Seven Stars

Junior Mutshaeni of Gateway Primary in Musina received a second place in the 150m hurdles and a third place in the 75m hurdles during a recent provincial athletics meeting in Polokwane.

With only six matches remain-ing before the end of the league activities, the coach of Black Leopards, Mr Kostadin Papic, is optimistic that his side will emerge as champions and gain automatic promotion to the Absa Premiership Division. This, despite the fact that five of their remaining matches will be played away from home.

Black Leopards are currently in the third position on the log with 41 points, seven behind the pace setters, Chippa United.

The Thohoyandou outfit is one point behind the second-placed Baroka FC. The only match Lido-da Duvha will play at home will

be against United FC when they will clash at the Giyani Stadium on Saturday, 19 April.

Papic reiterated the fact that they will reduce the points gap from seven to four when they meet Chippa at the Philipi Sta-dium in Cape Town next Friday evening, 4 April.

“Who knows, Chippa might be four points ahead of us by the time we meet them next week if Baroka manage to beat them this Sunday,” said Papic. He also indicated that they were not the only ones who would play five of their remaining matches away from home, saying Chippa Unit-ed were facing a similar situation.

Black Leopards will play against Maluti FET College at the Charles Mopedi Stadium in the Free State tomorrow afternoon, before flying to Cape Town for their match against Chippa Unit-ed next Friday.

Apart from those two match-es, Leopards still have to play against United FC (home), Mi-lano United, FC Cape Town and Jomo Cosmos.

Chippa United’s remaining matches are Baroka FC, Black Leopards, Witbank Spurs, United FC, Santos and Milano United. The last league matches will be played on Sunday, May 11.

Mr Kostadin Papic.

Ronewa Rammela of Seven Stars chases the ball.

Vhembe FET College deposited full points into their league account by beating Thembal-uvhilo Seven Stars 2-1 in an MMK Funeral Services League match at Makwarela on Sunday.

As if they were going to bury their opponents alive, Vhembe scored their two goals within the first 15 minutes. Their opening goal came six minutes into the game. Mulweli Malada, who scored a brace, forced his way through the de-fence of Stars and blasted in a rocket from close range. Seven Stars did not throw in the towel, despite conceding the early goal.

Eight minutes later, the students increased the margin. Mulweli Malada scored his second when he beat the keeper with a volley, following a neat pass from Moses “Jack” Razwimisani. As if they were the ones who were leading, Seven Stars started to demonstrate their delaying tactics.

Seven Stars came close to scoring in the 39th minute. Sathiel Mawela was denied what every-one thought was a sure goal by the acrobatic keeper of Vhembe, Rhulani Sambo. He jumped like a well-oiled machine to pull off a great save. At that stage the fans for Seven Stars had already started celebrating.

Seven Stars pulled one back through Tendani Netshikweta. He beat the offside trap and scored easily. Rudolph Sithole of Vhembe was given his marching orders for swearing at the referee.

Adibayo destroys MawejaTakalani Ramagalela of Takers (left) and Madilonga Mukwevho of Univen wait for the high ball to land.

The fans of Maweja Takers left Tshakhuma with sore hearts on Sat-urday, after their home team lost 0-1 to Univen FC in their MMK Funeral Services League match.

Takers’ front runner, Mukandangalwo Ramunana, did not live up to the fans’ expectations as he was tightly marked. Realizing that he was well-contained, Ramunana tried to frustrate the opponents with rough plays. He did not get far with his dirty tricks as the referee, Mr Eric Munyai, warned him with a card in the 14th minute.

Univen should have taken the lead in the 24th minute. They were awarded an indirect free kick just outside the

penalty box. Rofhiwa Netshiungani beat the keeper with a half volley from the set piece.

The second assistant referee, Mr Mphireni Mphephu, raised his fl ag as the ball hit the back of the net. After consult-ing with Mphepu, the referee withdrew his initial decision and disallowed the goal on the basis that the goal scorer was the fi rst player to touch the ball, whereas the set piece was an indirect free kick.

The referee’s decision did not go down well with the p l a y e r s , o f f i c i a l s and fans

of Univen. They started to shout abusive words towards the match offi cials.

The goal that earned Univen three sig-nifi cant points came in the 36th minute. Khathutshelo “Adibayo” Mudau connect-ed Lesiba Kwapa’s square pass.

Maweja introduced three new faces in the second half. Rofhiwa Magodi, Sher-iff Mudalahothe and Mashudu Mukhari replaced Mukandangalwo Ramunana, Takalani Mashila and Ndwamato Ndou respectively. Maweja threw everything

within their reach in their desperate search for the equal-iser, but it was not

their day.
