“FUN” GI On SundaysThis Week’s Feature Story

Don’t miss homegrown fungi band, the popular

and talented Leon and the Hot Shots who will be per-

forming every Sunday during July from 5pm to 9pm at

the Bath and Turtle’s Rendezvous Bar, Virgin Gorda.

As the band’s name suggests, Leon who hails

from North Sound, is the leader of the band. Fungi

music is Leon’s passion and he has been playing it for

the past 25 years. He founded the band Leon and the

Hot Shots 22 years ago and they will be entertaining

the crowd at this year’s festival as part of the East

End/Long Look activities on Festival Wednesday, 3rd

August.

Fungi music is the local music form of the Virgin

Islands and is an expression of VI culture as it con-

jures together African and European influences in a

unique sound. Fungi is a fusion of a wide range of

instruments and topics, it is festive and made for

dancing. Many of the instruments are homemade and

the beat of the double bass is usually at the core of

the colorful mix of sounds.

Leon plays almost all the instruments, which is

really saying something, as there can be over ten

instruments in a fungi band from the guitar and sax-

ophone to the triangle and washboard, although he

says that playing the banjo, bathtub base and

ukulele are by far his favorites.

Leon said, “People enjoy fungi music and we are

happy with the support the band is getting and with

the help of God, we will continue to share our musi-

cal talents with everyone – the fungi way.”

To cool you down at their gigs at the Rendezvous

Bar, specials include Coors Light and Don Q at $3,

plus complimentary snacks, so come enjoy a fun

evening with a lively local band, tap your feet and

start getting in the festival mood.

Send your questions to [email protected] and a response will be provided

Dear Koren,

I have a 17 year old daughter who is very very

untidy. She throws her things all over the place and her

room is always a mess. I am old fashioned and a very tidy

person and I believe that level of untidiness is a reflection

of what is going on inside the person’s mind. Do I need

to send her to counselling?

– Frustrated Mother

Dear Frustrated Mother,

It sounds like you want your daughter to be exactly

like you but that is not going to happen. Untidiness,

especially in teenagers, does not necessarily have to

mean some personality disorder. Adolescents have dif-

ferent priorities from adults and cleaning up might not be

hers. It is your house and she should respect your wish-

es to keep her room more tidy, but you also have to con-

sider that maybe she does not mean to be a slob.

Try bargaining with her and see if that makes her

more motivated to keep it clean. If she needs top-ups for

her phone, movie money or an allowance, then she has

to clean her room. Don’t expect it to be like yours though

– pick your battles. Once it is in a fairly okay state, then

give her a break.

Your personal E-therapist is in the house!

Untidy DaughterIf you have the time, you

can offer to help her clean it.

Make sure that she has

enough boxes or drawers to

store her stuff so that any

complaint she might make

about lack of space would

really be invalid. You can even

make a timetable with her if

she is very busy so that time is allotted every week for

tidying up.

Whatever method you use, don’t develop high

blood pressure over it. We can guide, teach and model

good behaviour for our kids, but they still make choices,

that we don’t like.

I don’t think she needs a counsellor. If you talk to

other parents, you will find out that while some

teenagers are tidy, many (maybe even more) are untidy.

Don’t take it personally as though she were doing it

deliberately to upset you.

Sometimes teenagers grow out of their sloppy

habits so if nothing you do works, then just bear that

thought in mind. In the event she does not grow out of it,

at least you know that once she is old enough, she might

take up residence elsewhere, so it won’t be your problem

anymore.

Mao’s Last DancerBased on the true

story of Chinese bal-

let star, Li Cunxin,

Mao’s Last Dancer is

a biopic that takes

the audience on a

journey from 1970s

Maoist China to the

glittering world of

the Houston Ballet.

Li, the son of

Chinese peasants, is chosen as a young boy to attend

ballet school in Beijing far from his family. The Cultural

Revolution is in full swing, and Madame Mao, the zeal-

ous wife of Chairman Mao, has transformed this classical

dance form into her revolutionary vision. Through a

series of flashbacks, we get a glimpse of this repressive

period of Chinese history when conformity took prece-

dence over creativity, and many intellectuals and artists

were purged from society.

At first, Li is a hesitant student, but under the tute-

lage of one of his teachers, he soon becomes the acade-

my’s star pupil. Following a cultural trip to China by the

Houston Ballet, Li catches the attention of the troupe’s

artistic director, Ben Stevenson, who invites Li to train

with them in Houston.

Before leaving for the US, Li is warned by his

Chinese minders to resist decadent western values, but

once in Houston, the temptations are many. A simple trip

to the mall is a study in excess on a scale that he could

never have imagined, yet he soon comes to appreciate

the freedom that comes with the American lifestyle. He

falls in love with an American girl, and decides not to

return to China, even though this means he may never

see his family again. In a pivotal moment in US Chinese

relations, Li is kept against his will at the Chinese con-

sulate in Houston, and it is only the resulting media furor

that forces the Chinese to let him go.

At times the movie takes a melodramatic turn that

threatens to overwhelm the story. But in the end, it does-

n’t matter, Li’s astounding dancing and his personal

courage make this movie soar.

Mysteries of Missing and Misplaced Keys: Part 2

A few weeks ago I wrote an article about losing mykeys upon returning from holiday. After that I vowed to beextra careful with any keys in my possession only toencounter a similar mishap a couple of weeks later.

On a trip to St. Thomas to do a bit of shopping, mywife and I rented a car for the day as we’ve done on afew previous occasions. Things were going well until wedrove off in our car for the day – a Ford Focus. It was assluggish as a whale in a pool of molasses, the first signthat it wasn’t going to be such a good day. When I dis-covered that the central locking was malfunctioning, Ibegan to wonder what else could go wrong. I would findout later in the day!

A race against time began after we severely over-stayed our time in Home Depot and our trip to the super-market became a mad scramble. Grocery shopping done,we proceeded to load the car with roughly an hour to gobefore the ferry departed at 5pm. In my haste to pack afew items in the back seat, I dropped the key on the dri-ver’s seat and soon realized the folly of this after the pack-ing was done. The front door had somehow slammedshut and we had already locked all the other doors.

A feeling of desperation came over me as I saw thetime reading 4:15pm. After a few frustrated and futile tugs

at each door I called the rental company only to be toldthat it would be roughly thirty minutes before anyone canget to us. We were convinced that we would miss theferry and have to spend the night over there. Surprisingly, the guy got to us and opened the car about fifteen min-utes later and we decided to make a try for the ferryamidst the rush hour traffic and pouring rain. As luckwould have it, the rain had caused a delay in the ferry’sschedule and we arrived just in time to park the car, dropthe key at the ticket office, have our goods loaded, andboard the ferry. It was now about 5:30pm.

The journey home was spent in silence as I contem-plated the frantic ending to our trip and yet another misfor-tune with keys. When would the next one be, I wondered?

Art imitates life to a

degree in Necessary

Roughness an engaging

new dramedy premier-

ing Wednesday, June 29,

on USA Network.

Inspired by the

story of Dr. Donna

Dannanfelser, who

worked as a therapist for the New York Jets in the mid-

1990s, the series stars Callie Thorne (Rescue Me) as Dr.

Dani Santino, who throws her cad of a husband out of

their home. She frets over how she’ll be able to support

her two teenage kids as a single mom when she meets

Matthew Donnally (Marc Blucas, Knight & Day), a trainer

for the New York Hawks, in a club.

After a torrid one-night stand together, Dani and

Matthew discover they enjoy each other outside of bed

as well, and after she uses hypnosis to help him shake a

longtime smoking addiction, he helps get her a trial gig

with his football team, entrusted with turning things

around for high-maintenance bad-boy gridiron star

Terrence “TK” King (Mehcad Brooks, True Blood). Thus

Dani finds herself drawn into a strange new world that

pays well, but puts incredible demands on her as she

tries to juggle the all-consuming nature of this job with

her responsibilities as a single mother.

The show’s roots in real life were an added incentive

for Thorne, best known as Sheila Keefe, Denis Leary’s

volatile sometimes-lover in the FX drama Rescue Me.

“Partly it was that I knew this woman, and I wanted

to explore telling this story, but there was also part of me

that didn’t know her world at all,” the actress explains.

“When I read the script for ‘Necessary Roughness,’ the

fact that it was inspired by a real woman made me feel

like it was so rich in its detail, because I knew it was com-

ing from a real place. It just felt much more grounded for

me, and I liked the idea of playing a woman who was

ordinary to a degree but then put into extraordinary cir-

cumstances. I’m used to playing extraordinary women

who are in normal situations, and then you just watch

them destroy everything around them.”

tNecessary Roughness premieres Wednesday on

USA Network.

Hey…Look…Anguilla’s Gone with the Premier’s Cup!!By Dean “The Sportsman” GreenawayBy Dean “The Sportsman” Greenaway

When the now Premier’s Cup Youth Regatta was

launched 13 years ago as the Chief Minister’s Youth

Regatta where they competed for the Chief Minister’s

Cup, everyone took it for granted that it would ALWAYS be

in the Virgin Islands.

For 11 of the first 12 years, the cup went across the

pond to the U.S. Virgin Islands – with St. Croix and St.

Thomas sailors – who have gone on to international

acclaim, occupying the top of the mast. St. Thomas won a

record five straight titles after St. Croix had dominated the

event four times in a row.

Finally, after the event became known as the

Premier’s Cup, one Monday morning two years ago, the

Premier was proud to show off the trophy in his office that

the territory’s young sailors had won.

On Sunday afternoon, after 12 years of the Virgin

Islands’ (US and BVI) dominance of the Premier’s Youth

Regatta the Premier’s Cup has moved outside of the Virgin

Islands’ boundaries for the first time – not sailing back to

St. Thomas or St. Croix as had been customary – but trav-

eling by a chartered plane to Anguilla.

Yes, the same Anguilla – captained by Kendall

Richardson – who was bold enough to email John Lewis,

one of the event organizers, telling him Anguilla was

ready to climb to the top of the podium and would take

the Premier’s Cup back with them by the time racing

ended on Sunday.

True to form, Anguilla carted off the 13th annual

Premier’s Youth Regatta with a four points victory over for-

mer champs St. Croix.

“This is really special,” said Captain Richardson dur-

ing his team’s turn on the prize-giving stand. “Anguilla is

known for its sailing but we have never ever gotten a first

here in 13 years. I came, and I made a difference and I’m

really glad about it.”

With 42 points, Anguilla was able to hoist the cham-

pionships trophy they predicted they would win with St.

Croix taking the runners up spot after amassing a score of

46. St. Lucia was two points better than Team BVI, 66-68.

Puerto Rico was fifth after gathering 71 points. Antigua

was sixth with 103 followed by Grenada with 115 while the

USA rounded out the competition with 135.

Richardson said practices had been limited as team

members concentrated on CXC exams but they got

almost two weeks preparation in 420s, a boat totally dif-

ferent to the IC24s on which all teams raced. “Luck was on

our side,” the Captain said. “The wind was good, sailing

conditions were great, but we managed to pull it out with

tactics and boat speed,” he explained.

At least for the next year, everyone in the Virgin

Islands will be working hard to dethrone Anguilla. But, I’m

sure, they’re going to work just as hard to keep it.

Emily Osment recent-

ly spent two months

in a constant state of

depression, seques-

tering herself from

her friends and family

and suffering the

exhaustion that

comes with feeling

the world was out to

get her. And she loved every minute of it.

It was all part of her commitment to

“Cyberbully,” a hard-hitting drama airing on ABC

Family Sunday, July 17. Osment plays Taylor

Hillridge, an easygoing high-schooler who is thrilled

when her mom gives her a laptop computer for her

birthday. Her joy soon turns to tragedy, however,

after Taylor painfully discovers the pitfalls of living

online. A page she sets up on a social media website

soon becomes host to vicious rumors and com-

ments about her, driving Taylor to the point where

she doesn’t know who her real friends are and instill-

ing in her a sense of terror from which there seems

no escape.

The role offered the 18-year-old Osment the

chance to show a different side to her talents, which

largely have been featured in light comedies such as

“Hannah Montana” and the “Spy Kids” films.

“I’ve wanted to do a dramatic role for a long

time,” says Osment, who added that she was hands-

on in all aspects of her character, including altering

her lines to make them sound more natural and

making sure the wardrobe and hairstyle matched

Taylor’s growing despair. “I saw that this was a real-

ly good opportunity to show what I’ve got. I really

liked that this is a character that truly takes a jour-

ney. She’s in a family where the father has left, she

doesn’t have a great relationship with her mother, a

pretty normal relationship with her brother, but she’s

OK. She takes this amazing journey ... to the lowest

of lows that anyone can be. ... I’m so glad I did this.

It taught me so much about what I’m capable of.”

Beyond the professional fulfillment it brought

her, Osment also was proud to be part of a project

that addressed a tough, all-too-relevant issue.

“Cyberbully” is the centerpiece of the “Delete Digital

Drama” campaign by ABC Family and Seventeen

magazine. In addition to the film, ABC Family is pro-

ducing several public service announcements fea-

turing stars from the network about cyberbullying

and how to combat it.

One might wonder how a star such as Osment,

who boasts successful careers in acting and music -

as well as more than 1 million Twitter followers -

could convincingly portray an unpopular, terrorized

teen. Well, the flip side to celebrity life is being able

to go online any time of the day and read all sorts of

nasty, often patently ridiculous comments about

yourself posted by complete strangers. Osment esti-

mated that she gets thousands of replies on Twitter

every day, and while most of them are friendly, she

has encountered people who go out of their way to

be mean.

Osment says that after investing so much of

herself in the project, she has found a new cause

that will stay with her long after the credits roll.
