Lime ... “to hang around idly” or “to go out on thetown.”Source: The Dictionary of Virgin Islands EnglishCreole by the late edu-cator and historian LitoValls. The Limin’ Times brings you all the newsabout when and where to “lime” in the BritishVirgin Islands.

I think I Got One!

A couple weeks ago my niece, KC and I were sitting

on the dock just ‘shooting the breeze’ when she asked if

we could go fishing. I told her sure no problem but we

had to first get the line and hooks etc. So, we made a

date for the following weekend.

I did the necessary prep work: got the fishing poles

from my brother-in-law, bought hooks, and of course, we

had to get bait. Then it was off for a day of adventure and

hopefully some fish. I haven’t been fishing in a few years

despite living mere steps away from the water so; it was

safe to say that I was a little rusty.

KC was really excited as it was her first time fishing

and she couldn’t wait to cast her line. Initially, it was just

suppose to be us girls but my nephew and his cousins

saw us on the dock, came out to inquire and before you

know it, they had all joined in on the fun.

Things started off a little slow at first, there were

plenty of fish as we could see but

we weren’t getting any bites. After

about an hour and still no fish we

decided maybe our bait wasn’t

working, so we switched up and

tried again. Ten minutes after my

niece cast her line I hear a loud

screech, “Aunty Lena, I think I got

one!” We pulled and reeled and

pulled some more and there it was the first catch of the

day, a doctor fish!

After that first catch she got the hang of it and

began fishing like a pro, because shortly after throwing

her line again she caught another, this time a yellow tail.

It seems she had gotten the technique down pat, of

knowing when to pull on the line to hook the fish. She

didn’t even need my help reeling them in anymore. After

that she was unstoppable, reeling them in one after the

other. Even some spectators and workers around the

area were impressed by her skills.

My nephew and his cousin were determined to

catch more fish than us but hadn’t gotten a single bite.

They were annoyed that we were now up four and they

had none. I went over and gave them a hand after put-

ting some fresh bait on the line and making a few adjust-

ment. A few minutes later there was a tug on the line –

they had gotten their first catch of

the day.

By the end of the day, sun

scorched and tired, we had a bucket

full of fish and memories to last a life

time. Although my nephew caught a

couple more later that day, they girls

still walked away with the most

catches of the day!

By Melissa Woodley

The Other WomanTwenty-two-year-old Emilia (Natalie Portman), a

recent law school graduate, finds herself drawn to Jack

Woolfe, partner at the firm where she now works. His

already-failing marriage crumbles and ends completely

when Emilia finds herself pregnant with Jack’s child. The

two quickly marry and in less than a year Emilia goes

from single young woman to married stepmother and

mother-to-be.

And then her new world comes crashing down when

newborn daughter Isabel dies suddenly just days after

birth. It is here, actually, that the film The Other Woman

begins, with Emilia crushed, grieving, angry, and still

attempting to find her foothold as a stepmother to a pre-

teen boy. And to complicate things further, the boy

(William) is heavily influenced by his mother Carolyn’s

ideas about Emilia.

We learn most of this story through the use of flash-

backs interspersed with scenes from the current day-to-

day life Emilia leads, which includes a lot of one-on-one

time with William on days when she picks him up from

school. The two bicker,

almost like siblings, but

William probably does-

n’t realize how deeply

his jabs hurt his step-

mother, especially when

the subject of his baby

sister comes up. Is

William simply repeat-

ing Carolyn’s ideas, is he

being intentionally hurtful, or is he grieving the infant’s

death as well? It seems the answer could lie in any or all

of these possibilities.

And there’s still one secret Emilia hasn’t told any-

one.

The acting in this drama is superb, especially the

scenes between Portman and Charlie Tahan, who plays

William. Emotionally draining, the film delves deep into

Emilia’s own questions about falling in love with the

“wrong” person, finding a niche in a new form of family,

and demanding a reason for an innocent death.

The film is based on a 2006 book titled “Love and

Other Impossible Pursuits,” by Ayelet Waldman.

Dear Koren, I have a 34 year old sister who gossips too much.

She is always on the phone discussing somebody’s busi-ness and sometimes I even hear her telling her friendsabout personal stuff with her boyfriend or things thathappen in our house. How can I get her to stop? She isolder than me and we have had arguments about it butshe says that I don’t pay her phone bill or license on hermouth.– Concerned Sister

Dear Concerned Sister,

The tongue is indeed a mighty weapon and has

been known to inflict great damage or impart comfort.

However, the tongue of someone who gossips is rarely

ever used for good. Gossiping is a bad habit and can real-

ly cause her to lose friends, be perceived as someone

who is shallow or malicious and cause people to mistrust

her.

I’m sure you know by now that we cannot really

change other people – she has to stop herself. Arguing

with your sister will only cause her to be defensive and

feel as though you are criticizing her. Instead of arguing,

point out some examples of how gossip has harmed

innocent people and if you can find an example of how it

hurt her, that would be even better.

Here’s what you can do: • Let her know that she should not discuss your busi-

ness or the family business with other persons when it is

none of their concern. Perhaps you could also have one

of your parents talk to her about it and hope that she

respects their request.

• Be careful what you say around her, so that you are not

giving her material to use.

• Don’t encourage her with the gossip thing. It would not

Your personal E-therapist, is in the house!

My Sister Is A Gossipbe nice if you encourage the

same behaviour that you dis-

like. When she starts to talk

about others, change the

topic to something else or

find something good to say

about the person.

Maybe your sister is bored and does not have

enough exciting things going on in her life. Encourage

her to get involved in meaningful activity, so that her

focus is not on others so much.

Remember as someone once said, small minds dis-

cuss people, average minds discuss events and great

minds discuss ideas; maybe you can put this up on the

bedroom wall and hope that the non-verbal message

inspires her.

End of the Road, On Bended Knee and a personal

favorite One Sweet Dayare undoubtedly this years head-

Saturday night the talented Keyshia Cole, who will

“Go! Chase those skirts,” were the men’s instruc-

tions given by Stephanie Russ Penn at the start of

Saturday’s Blenheim Trust 5K Series finale at the A. O.

Shirley Recreation Grounds as 36 souls braced the

inclement weather.

The 22 men who had a three minutes handicap, had

no other choice but to chase the 14 women and see if

they could catch them all. As the women disappeared

out of the grounds, the men waited—some wondered if

they would get close.

Series debutant Meriel Steadman and Martine

Allee set the pace for the women—many of them run-

ning in skirts—as they ran through the streets of Road

Town on the City Circuit course that covered 3.1 miles. It

tokk them through Wickhams Cay, down to the

Hospital, up Main Street, through Lower Estate and the

fringes of Huntums Ghut, looping out to the stop light

and back to the Shirley Grounds.

When the men started, defending champ Steven

Asson, Virgin Gorda’s Emrol Amsterdam and Mark

Stephenson led the parade of runners with series leader

Zebalon McLean in tow.

Off on a frantic pace, they set off trying to cut into

the deficit and catch the women. One by one the leaders

picked them off, but Steadman and

Allee continued to hold ground even

though their three minutes lead was

steadily being eroded.

Eventually, the race became a

three man battle with Amsterdam,

Stephenson and McLean trying to

catch Steadman and Allee after pass-

ing everyone else. Soon enough, they

all passed Allee and Amsterdam separated from the field

in pursuit of Steadman. Would he catch her?

Still leading, Steadman entered the Shirley Grounds

with a nine seconds lead over Amsterdam. The race was

on. Amsterdam’s legs burned as Steadman made her

final kick. Amsterdam made his final push but then ran

out of ‘real estate’ as Steadman crossed the line.

Amsterdam had made up all but six seconds of the

full three minutes deficit to finally pull out a victory on

Tortola, raising his arms triumphantly as he crossed the

Blenheim Trust branded finish line tape in 19 minutes,

09.37 seconds. He was followed by Zebalon McLean a

few seconds back in 19:10.60 with Stephenson third in

19:19.18. Asson followed in 19:24.82 as the only four to

break the 20 minutes barrier on the chase.

Steadman’s winning debut time was 22:03.37,

beating 13 of the 22 men competing. Allee placed sec-

ond in 22.51.12 with Darwn Peters grabbing the third

spot in 23.43.86 to complete the only three women

under 24 minutes.

As the race ended and the rains began to fall, it was

time for the awards ceremony, which is always capped

off by Mrs. Pearline Robinson’s now famous tasty banana

nut bread. Who ate the most? Ah…that’s another story!

The men liked the idea of the three

minutes handicap and the women did-

n’t seem to mind having the spotlight

as they were grouped together on their

own pace—perhaps wondering how

far they would get on the course before

the men chased them down. It was,

however, a great end to the series.
