Old Story Time – Jamaican Drama Plays Out at HLSCCThis Week’s Feature Story
Don’t miss this weekend’s theatrical treat at
HLSCC, the University of the Virgin Islands’ production
of Old Story Time, a play written by Trevor D. Rhone
and directed by David Edgecombe. Showtimes are
Friday and Saturday at 8pm and Sunday at 4pm and
the production is a tribute to the author’s outstanding
contribution to Caribbean theatre.
The play is a Jamaican tale about Len Tomlinson
(Noel Charles), his mother Miss Aggie (Heather
Hogarth Smith), his wife Lois (Jamilya Christopher),
and his adversary George (Joshua Jno-Pierre). Pa Ben
(George Silcott, Jr.) is the skilful storyteller who works
hard to broker peace and advocates love and under-
stand above all else.
Miss Aggie is a salt-of-the-earth Caribbean
woman “from country” who has nothing but the high-
est of ambitions for her son Len. She pushes him to
study hard and encourages him to marry Margaret
(Asheda Maccow). However, when she catches Len
frolicking at the river with his childhood playmate,
Pearle (Carlla Morris), she gives him a good beating.
Later, as an Economics student in England, Len
marries Lois, the pretty black woman he fell in love
with before leaving
Jamaica, which does not
please his “mama.”
On his return to
Jamaica with Lois, Len
must confront his old
enemy George, who
brutally ill-treated him
throughout high school
with the help of Margaret, who is now married to
George.
Len discovers that George amassed a fortune
through unscrupulous development schemes, and
soon learns that the crooked banker also robbed his
“mama” of her life savings. He assembles the evi-
dence that could see George, and perhaps even
Margaret in jail.
However, Len learns quickly that he will have to
fight “mama” before he can carry out his “moral right
to rid society” of “a scum” like George. And “mama’s”
weapon of choice is “Obeah!”
Tickets are $20 each. For ticketing and other
information call Linette Baa on 852-7223.

Daughter not meeting expectations
Ask Koren
Ask KorenYour personal E-therapist is in the house!
Send your questions confidentially to [email protected].
Dear Koren,I am having two issues with my 16 year old
daughter. First of all, we are already in January andshe does not seem to be taking her CXC studying seri-ously and she is taking eight subjects. Secondly, sheis saying she wants to follow in my footsteps and bea nurse, but I know that nursing is really hard workwith not much pay. How do I motivate her with the firstissue and discourage her with the second?
–Concerned and Distressed Mother
Dear Concerned and Distressed Mother,
I can understand your concerns, but do not be
distressed. Look at the positives here: Your daughter
has made it to her final year of school when many stu-
dents have dropped out or became pregnant, she is
ambitious, she talks to you about her goals, and she
admires you enough to want to follow in your foot-
steps. All in all, I would say that you have a lot to be
thankful for.
Sometimes we start our kids off in school early
and they go from day care right up to high school so
by the time they get to 5th form they might be tired. If
she has just finished preparing her SBA’s, her brain
must really need a break. So try to see things from her
viewpoint.
Try motivating her and encourage her to read her
notes and textbooks – this
way, she does not feel
intense pressure and infor-
mation will stick in her
mind. While you want the
best for her, it is early and
she can build up momen-
tum slowly, rather than
cramming and then she crashes and burns. Try to be
supportive, rather than nagging and help her to utilize
her strengths to achieve success.
As it relates to her choice of career, nursing is an
essential service. The benefits might not be all mone-
tary, but your daughter might get a sense of satisfac-
tion from knowing that she is making a difference in
people’s lives. Also, if she chooses to go overseas,
nurses are paid a lot more and their services are quite
valuable.
Obviously, you have represented the career well,
which would have had some influence on her. Instead
of discouraging her against choosing nursing, it
would be a better idea to explain to her the pros and
cons of being in the profession and help her to make
a good decision.

Education on the Go!Recently, I was over on Anegada with friends to
spend a few days visiting and just limin’ in general. On
day two, we spent some time at Loblolly at the Big
Bamboo – a favorite watering hole (both for the swim-
ming and the libations). Whilst we were there, we
encountered a blaze of brightly colored tee-shirts and
a cacophony of voices to rival the sound of the waves.
We discovered that this was a group of ninety-one,
Class Four (Grade Five) students from Althea Scatliffe
Primary School on Tortola who were on a field trip.
Ninety-one young voices unleashed – the sheer ener-
gy alone could have raised the roof.
Teachers and chaperons engaged, corralled,
guided, joked and hung out with their charges. And as
we got talking to the teachers, we learned that
Natasha Marshall, Head of Grade Five, had organized
this field trip to complete the class work she and fel-
low teachers had taught in Social Studies. They had
just finished studying the islands of the BVI and had
decided that the best way to conclude the studies was
to take the class on the road – and on the water to see
the islands for themselves.
The teachers had contacted Carnel Clyne, Senior
Product Officer for the BVI Tourist Board & Film
Commission who was asked to narrate the trip. Their
first stop was to Norman and Salt Islands where he
delighted the children by reminding them that Pirates
of the Caribbean was partially filmed on Norman
Island. Their next stop was Anegada and as they made
their approach, the reef in all its glory became the
topic of conversation and education. After disembark-
ing from the ferry, the group toured the island check-
ing out the numerous salt ponds, flamingos, wild don-
keys and cows.
At lunch at the Big Bamboo, where we met the
group, the children marveled at the lobster car being
pulled from the ocean teeming with the live crus-
taceans. They scattered about to pick sea grapes from
the abundant trees throughout the property and
climbed from the trees to the shaded hammocks.
One student, Shekinah Stoutt, had never been to
Anegada before. She said the island was very long
and flat with sandy, bumpy roads with pretty flamin-
gos and friendly people. She would like to go back.
The trip concluded with a swim at Cow Wreck Beach
on the north side of the island.
It was very encouraging to see these young peo-
ple enjoying their land and sea and also to note that
the adults with them recognize how important it is for
these leaders of tomorrow to be informed and enthu-
siastic about their home. Carnel Clyne agreed and
said “Expose, appreciate and maintain – that’s what
this is about.” I say “right on” and add – don’t forget
to celebrate and enjoy!

Midnight in Paris
Imagine being an aspiring novelist who loves jazz
music and revels in the atmosphere of Paris (gosh,
that sounds like me) who finds himself in a time
warp and comes face to face with F. Scott Fitzgerald,
Josephine Baker and Ernest Hemingway!
Well that’s what happens to Gil, a success-
ful Hollywood screenwriter, who accompanies his
fiancée Inez and her parents on a business trip to
Paris. Her father dislikes the French but can’t resist a
deal.
Things start off well, with the usual sightseeing
trips, but the situation deteriorates when they bump
into a know-it-all friend of Inez who’s an expert on
everything and insists on showing them round. Inez
(Rachel McAdams) is fascinated, while Gil prefers to
wander the streets of Paris on his own, soaking up
the atmosphere.
Written and directed by Woody Allen,Midnight
in Paris stars Owen Wilson as Gil and features some
excellent footage of the world’s most romantic city in
all its phases – bright and sunny or pouring with rain
– it never loses its charm – except for Inez who’d
rather be back in California.
Gil’s trip back in time to an era he loves, starts
to colour his vision of the perfect life. He suggests to
Inez they get married and move to Paris where he
can get his creative juices flowing. She thinks he’s
nuts. When Gil meets Pablo Picasso and falls for his
beguiling mistress Adriana (Marion Cotillard), things
start getting complicated.
The film, acclaimed as one of Woody Allen’s
best, demonstrates what happens when people
believe a life different from their own is somehow
better.

By Dean “The Sportsman” Greenaway
When the 2012 Track and Field season opened on
Saturday with the Gatorade Development Series, ath-
letes showed that they were raring to go. It was the
start of a season like we have never seen before — a
season of great promise.
Just 17 days earlier, athletes had collected
awards during the 3rd BVI Athletics Association
Athletes Awards Recognition Gala and it didn’t take
long for them to set the tone for the season.
First, joint Sol BVI Youth Female Athlete of the
Year and 2011 Carifta Games 100m bronze medalist
Nelda Huggins, blasted her speciality in under 12 sec-
onds. Then her award counterpart, Tarika “Tinker
Bell” Moses, flirted with the 800m National Youth
Record with the fastest hand time ever recorded by an
Under 18s athlete.
Shortly there after, Lakeisha “Mimi” Warner, the
BVI Athletics Association’s 2011 Most Improved
Female Athlete of The Year, bested 800m Sr. National
Record holder Samantha John during her first race
back in the 400m, getting to the line in 58.30 seconds.
While the girls have been shining since 2005, it
was good to see the boys not being outdone. J’Maal
Alexander sprinted under 10.8 seconds in the 100m
and Shaquoy Stephens repelled the 2011 Colonial
Comeback Athlete of The Year, Deshawn “Fast Man”
Douglas in the 400m, with a 50.26 time.
All of the above mentioned were at last year’s
Carifta Games and they’ve again put their names to
the selectors as candidates for this year’s trip to the
games in Bermuda in early April.
“Compared to previous years, I think today we
started off with a big bang,” Meet Director Dag
Samuels declared after Saturday’s meet.
“We had several performances that we have to
take note of although all the running events were
hand timed. We had some really fast times in the
800m, where Tarika Moses ran 2 minutes and 19 sec-
onds hand time; Nelda ran under 12 seconds and
boys under 11 and we had a low 50 seconds in the
400m. All in all, I think we had a good beginning for
our development series.”
Samuels said that from what was seen in the
season opener, by the fourth race in the Gatorade
Development Series, there’ll be good things coming.
“By that time, everybody will be into their own events
and we should see some fantastic performances,
both on the field and on the track,” he stated.
As its an Olympic year, our eyes will be on
Chantel Malone, Ashley Kelly and Karene King in par-
ticular, all of whom will try to join Tahesia Harrigan-
Scott in London, when the Games open on July 27.
The Olympic hopefuls began their indoor season
over the weekend, but it will not be until they get out-
doors in their regular events, that they’ll be looking at
qualifying marks.
We’ll monitor as the season progresses, as they
have until July 8th to hit the London qualifying stan-
dards.
