Every day for the past

few weeks I have scanned the skies for signs that the long awaited summer rains are coming. I have even contemplated organizing another concert at the Litchi Orchard because that’s pretty much guaranteed to bring on the storm clouds, but that would just be cruel…

Seriously, though, I have it on excellent authority that the current water crisis that we are facing on the KZN North Coast is far more serious than most people realize. For starters, the level of the Hazelmere Dam which is falling fast due to continued unbridled consumption is supposedly around 43%, but the dam has become so heavily silted that there is real concern over the accuracy of this figure. It may in fact contain considerably less water than the official stats indicate. In a country where a collapsed silo at Majuba Power Station is officially described as a crack, creative understatement is considered par for the course, so we may yet get a nasty surprise when the taps run dry before the end of the holidays. That is, unless the rain come or we collectively get a lot more serious about water conservation.

While hefty water restrictions have been imposed in the greater Ballito region, by far the greater drain on Hazelmere’s depleting resources comes from the Ethekwini Metro where restrictions are only now being considered. But we shouldn’t be waiting for official proclamations – the fact is that we are using water at a rate that is currently unsustainable but we

can independently do our bit to make a difference. For example here are two tips that illustrate the point:•Shorten your shower

by a minute or two and you’ll save up to 600 litres per month.•Time your shower to keep it under

5 minutes. you’ll save up to 3 800 litres per month.

You’ll find more tips like these in this issue and online at www.lifeandstyle.fm

If each of us does what we can and encourages family and friends to do the same, we’ll make a huge difference – and you’ll save money in the process. Be the difference that you want to see in the world. It really does start with you.

On another tack, plans for the launch of radio Life & Style 88.0FM are coming together rapidly and, all things being equal, we’ll hit the airwaves on December 10th. This will usher in a new dawn in local communication because for the first time, the greater Ballito region will have a fully-fledged radio station accessible locally on FM and digitally on cell phones, tablets and computers everywhere. You will be able to make dedications, report emergencies, find out what’s happening socially, and listen to local people live on air talking about interesting things. Of course, the main focus by far will be the music – all the hits that you love from today and back through the past forty years. If you don’t love the music, there is no hope for you!

The studio is the first custom-designed container building in

Ballito and Mabette vermaak from Detail Architects, one of the North Coast’s most inspired architectural firms, has made magic here. visitors to the Lifestyle Shopping Centre in Ballito will be amazed at what she has achieved, transforming two old shipping containers into something awesome!

We are keeping much of it under wraps until the official launch but you will be able to watch as it unfolds over the next two weeks and I am sure you will be impressed. We have been auditioning for presenters and have assembled a super team of young creative to grow and develop the station into what we firmly believe will become one of the most popular radio stations in the region.

Soon Life & Style will be coming to you in print, on air and online making us the most effective advertising and communications medium in the region. Watch this space!

Oh, AND by ThE WAy….In our previous edition I mentioned

that we had attended a function at an excellent restaurant called Spice that I incorrectly said was in Umdloti. Spice is actually MUCH closer to Ballito, on the coastal strip in Westbrook. It’s so good that we went back there last week to celebrate our anniversary…again, it was superb. You have to discover it for yourself if you haven’t already done so.

Ballito’s popular Waterberry restaurant and Coffee Shop has risen from the ashes of the fire that destroyed it in 2013. It’s gorgeous – open, clean lines, massive picture windows taking in a sweeping vista of the coastal forest and the cuisine is as good as ever. What are you waiting for? PAreNTINg can often seem like an endless tight-rope act. My husband often jokes that your kids may leave your home, but

never your pocket! The question that begs to be answered is: Do I help my adult child to purchase a property, or let them rent?

Once your child has flown the coop, you may be free of the day-to-day parenting challenges synonymous with bringing up children. However you can now find yourself playing a whole new roll: that of relationship mentor, advisor, loan shark, unpaid nanny, live-in cook and cleaner, free gardener and …… the list can go on.

According to Lightstone Property Researchers, 40% of Ballito homeowners are between ages 50 to 64 years old; and 20% are 65 years and older. That makes 60 % of all Ballito residents in the age group who may have adult children. According to a 2009 Pew research study, 13% of American parents have at least one adult child staying at home. It would be interesting to research how many middle-aged and older parents still have adult children living at home.

Should you help your adult children with the purchase of their first home?

Property ownership is synonymous with financial stability. Helping your adult son or daughter purchasing their own home will probably be their biggest asset in their life, setting them on their path to a healthy credit profile and giving them a head start in life towards financial security.

However, there are a few aspects that will require close attention before committing to help:

QueSTIONS TO ASk yOurSeLF: 1. “Will I be in the position to still take care of myself and my spouse?” How many of us can answer yes with very little concern about the future? “Did your parents buy you your first house?” 2. Is your child responsible enough to take on the financial responsibility?3. Can he/she commit to the upkeep and maintenance of a property?4. Will he/she be able to carry all the additional costs of owning a property such as rates, levies, consumables etc.?

COMMITMeNT:As the parent you need to make

your child understand that buying a property, is a long term commitment. Not only must one discuss the financial implications, but also what their plans are for the future. Are they planning to travel, what will happen if they change jobs or towns? Are they considering immigration?

If they don’t have a definite plan for at least the next 3 years, it is clear that it could be a risk helping them with a 20 year bond commitment? This could become your responsibility, eating into your pension.

AFFOrDABILITy:One of the aspects often ignored

is the affordability of your children. Carefully sit them down and consider all costs and possible future cost that they have not given any thought to, such as transfer fees, bond fees and interest rate hikes.

Run through different scenarios with them and let them consider all outcomes before you commit to part with your hard earned equity you have worked for.

FIve WAyS TO heLp yOur ChILD BuyINg A prOperTy:1.Stand surety2.Be a joint purchaser and bond applicant3.Gift – pay their deposit or part thereof.4.Should you not have cash – raise your access bond for part payment or for paying the transfer costs5.Some parents live-in with their children and contribute towards the household expenses. For bond purposes it may be better to pay a monthly rent into their account. A rental agreement should be of great helping securing a bond for them.

As a parent nothing makes you happier than knowing that your children are secure and settled down building a future for themselves to become independent and self-sufficient. What a privilege to be able to help your children, not only financially, but also through departing with your wisdom and good advice.

At Harcourts Dolphin Coast, we pride ourselves to assist in every way to make property sales possible. You and your children are very important to us, that’s why we truly care.

K i t c h e n•There are a number of ways to save water, and they all start with you.•When washing dishes by hand, don’t let the water run. Fill one basin with wash water and the other with rinse water.•Dishwashers typically use less water than washing dishes by hand. Now, Energy Star dishwashers save even more water and energy.•If your dishwasher is new, cut back on rinsing. Newer models clean more thoroughly than older ones.•Designate one glass for your drinking water each day, or refill a water bottle. This will cut down on the number of glasses to wash.•Soak pots and pans instead of letting the water run while you scrape them clean.•Use the garbage disposal sparingly. Instead, compost vegetable food waste and save gallons every time.•Wash your fruits and vegetables in a pan of water instead of running water from the tap.•Don’t use running water to thaw food. For water efficiency and food safety, defrost food in the refrigerator.•Install an instant water heater near your kitchen sink so you don’t have to run the water while it heats up. This also reduces energy costs.•Keep a pitcher of drinking water in the refrigerator instead of running the tap. This way, every drop goes down you and not the drain.

•Reuse leftover water from cooked or steamed foods to start a nutritious soup, it’s one more way to get eight glasses of water a day.•Cook food in as little water as possible. This also helps it retain more nutrients.•Select the proper pan size for cooking. Large pans may require more cooking water than necessary.•If you accidentally drop ice cubes, don’t throw them in the sink. Drop them in a house plant instead.•Collect the water you use while rinsing fruit and vegetables. Use it to water house plants.

B at h r o o m•Shorten your shower by a minute or two and you’ll save up to 150 gallons per month.•Time your shower to keep it under 5 minutes. You’ll save up to 1,000 gallons per month.•Toilet leaks can be silent! Be sure to test your toilet for leaks at least once a year.•Put food coloring in your toilet tank. If it seeps into the bowl without flushing, there’s a leak. Fix it and start saving gallons.

•When running a bath, plug the bathtub before turning on the water. Adjust the temperature as the tub fills.•If your toilet flapper doesn’t close properly after flushing, replace it.•Turn off the water while you brush your teeth and save up to 4 gallons a minute. That’s up to 200 gallons a week for a family of four.•Consider buying a dual-flush toilet. It has two flush options: a half-flush for liquid waste and a full-flush for solid waste.•Plug the sink instead of running the water to rinse your razor and save up to 300 gallons a month.•Turn off the water while washing your hair and save up to 150 gallons a month.•When washing your hands, turn the water off while you lather.•Drop tissues in the trash instead of flushing them and save water every time.•One drip every second adds up to five gallons per day! Check your faucets and showerheads for leaks.•While you wait for hot water, collect the running water and use it to water plants.

GOOD news for Ballito is that the current traffic congestion being experienced by the widening of the p445, the main road into

town, will be significantly reduced by the official start of the holiday season on December 12th. Contractors Afriscan have been working through the night to accelerate progress and now believe that by the time they close for the annual builders’ break, there will be two lanes operational in either direction. Intersections will still be manually controlled at this point, but it is expected that traffic will flow more smoothly than has been the case in previous years.

A water seep has been discovered below the current roadworks which has delayed progress and the final tarmac surface for the new road will only be laid in February next year. But clean up teams are now busy removing excess

rubble and tidying up so visually there will be a huge improvement now as we enter the downhill run.

Last week we attended an on-site meeting of municipal officials, ward councilors, contractors, businessmen

and media where future plans were discussed and a status update revealed. Undoubtedly this first phase of the planned expansion of roadways in and around Ballito is adding huge impetus to the excitement of what is poised to become one of the most interesting investment destinations in the country.

IF it seems you are permanently single while everyone else around you is in a relationship, blame your DNA.

Scientists have identified a ‘singleton gene’, and found that those who have it are 20 per cent more likely to be single than others.

It is thought that by lowering levels of the feel-good brain chemical serotonin, the gene makes people less comfortable in close relationships.

This could make it harder to form them in the first place - or lead to break-up after break-up.

The scientists from Peking University in Beijing tested hair samples from almost 600 Chinese university students to analyse a gene called 5-HTA1, which comes in two different versions. Those with the ‘G’ version were much more likely to be single than those with the ‘C’ version.

Some 60 per cent were not in a relationship - compared to 50 per cent of those in the c group.

Importantly, the link couldn’t be explained by other factors that influence relationships, including appearance and wealth.

The key to the findings seems to be the role of the 5-HTA1 gene in the brain.

Those with the ‘G’, or singleton, version make less serotonin, a brain chemical involved in mood and happiness.

It was already known that people with the ‘G’ allele, or version, find it more difficult to get close to others.

Plus, they are more likely to be neurotic and to suffer from depression.

Writing in the journal Scientific Reports, the researchers said: ‘As pessimism

and neuroticism are detrimental to the formation, quality and stability of relationships, this connection between the G allele and psychological disorders might decrease carriers’ dating opportunities or lead to romantic relationship failure.’

The researchers said that students may have more free time and freedom to form relationships than others.

And at other times of life, other factors, such as pressure from parents to marry, may

be much more influential.Despite this, they

concluded that their study provides ‘evidence for genetic contribution to social relationships in certain contexts’.

Other scientists said that while genes will inevitably influence relationships, their role in most cases will be small.

Dr Pam Spurr, a relationship expert, said that we don’t have to let our genes rule our lives.

She said: ‘I know that our genetic heritage determines some of our behaviour but we always have choice.

‘If someone’s difficulties with dating are flagged up to them, I believe they can learn to interact in a way that will make them more successful in meeting somebody.

‘I feel quite optimistic about that.’Professor Tim Spector, an expert in the

role of genes from King’s College London, questioned how strong the research was.

However, studies show that our odds of getting married and staying married and our number of sexual partners are all influenced by our DNA.

Despite this, genes are not the be all and end all. Simple evidence for this comes from looking at identical twins.

They are usually attracted to the same type of person initially, but end up settling down with very different mates.

IF you are a business owner, you know that you need to attract and retain enough

clients to maintain a steady business growth. While there are many things that you can do to market your business, it is vital to initially focus on the activities that will bring you the best results and most revenue in the shortest space of time. This approach is typically known as the Pareto principle or 80/20 rule. The rule states that approximately twenty percent of your clients will produce eighty percent of your business income. Similarly, twenty percent of the products or services that you offer will more than likely generate eighty percent of your revenue.

A successful marketing message is one that gets heard by the right people. However, you want to make it memorable and powerful enough for those people to continue talking and even thinking about your message. A good message gets compliments, a great message inspires people to take action.

Here are some key points when marketing your business. All of them have to be met in order to motivate and inspire your prospects to take action and buy from you. The key points are clarity, impact and value.

CLARITYLack of clarity makes it hard for

people to understand what your marketing message is about. It has been said that a confused mind does not buy, so people need to have a clear idea about what you are offering and how it can solve, benefit or fulfil their

needs. Your message will be clearer if you focus on one problem and become a specialist who can solve this specific problem. By having a narrow niche you will bring clarity to your message, but in order to do this you have to understand your genius. Identify the one thing that you do better or more comprehensively than anyone else – something you are passionate about. I think it has become clear by my articles that I am passionate about branding, marketing and relationship building into sales; this is my genius.

IMPACTImpact is what will help your

message get heard by the right people, so it needs to stick out from the crowd. If your message is impactful enough, people will hear it “with their entire body.” You don’t want to interrupt; you want to disrupt. If your message resonates with them you have converted them from a lead into a prospect, who will want to work with you in the future (making them a client). Through this success, you will have fast-tracked the relationship, and minimised the risk they will ultimately take on your business.

VALUEValue is something each and

every client perceives through the experience they had with your business. It is not only about the quality of the product or service, but the overall business experience received as a result of working with you. If your value outweighs their cost, a transaction is likely to take place. However, they have to recognize value on their own; the less you try to convince them, the better. The best way to prove your value is through the words of other people who have already worked with you. Testimonials and case studies are the messages clients give a business, showing the value that business brought to them.

DuNkINg your bread in olive oil could cut your heart attack risk in just six weeks, say scientists.

Sophisticated new tests found regular consumption of olive oil dramatically improved chemical signals in the body linked to coronary artery disease.

A study led by Glasgow University confirms the health benefits of a cornerstone of the Mediterranean diet, especially for those who don’t normally eat olive oil.

The study added just 20mls a day – about four teaspoons - to the diet of healthy adults, which is the amount used in a salad dressing or mopped up by bread during a meal.

But a range of signals for heart disease measured in the urine improved in only six weeks, says a report published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Dr Bill Mullen, of the Institute of Cardiovascular and Medical Sciences, said ‘If we are able to identify the early signatures of diseases before they have had a chance to take hold we can start to treat them before they become a problem requiring costly medical intervention.

‘It is the first time this technique has been applied from a nutritional perspective to try to get to the bottom of which food or what ingredient is truly responsible for health benefits.’

Researchers at the Universities of Glasgow and Lisbon and private firm Mosaiques Diagnostics in Germany investigated the effect of olive oil on heart health in a group of 69 men and women who did not normally eat it.

The volunteers were split into two groups and asked to consume 20ml of

olive oil either low or high in phenolics every day over a six-week period.

Phenolics are natural compounds found in plants, including olives, thought to be responsible for the protective effect of olive oil.

The research team applied a new diagnostic technology by examining urine samples for a range of peptides (produced by the breakdown of proteins) already identified as biomarkers of diseases such as coronary artery disease (CAD).

Known as proteomics, the technology can pick up altered levels of certain proteins which suggest early signs of disease before symptoms appear.

The results showed both groups saw a big improvement in scores for CAD – the most common form of heart disease.

The system uses a CAD scoring system from 1: a definite case of CAD to -1: the ultimate healthy artery.

The group taking the low phenol olive oil saw a drop in CAD score from -0.5 to -0.8 while the high phenol group saw a reduction from -0.6 to -0.8.

Dr Emilie Combet of the School of Medicine at Glasgow University, said ‘What we found was that regardless of the phenolic content of the oil, there was a positive effect on CAD scores.

‘Any olive oil, low or high in phenolics, seems to be beneficial.

Olive oil contains omega-6 fats, a form of 'healthy' polyunsaturates which blocks the body's response to inflammation in chronic conditions such as heart disease and arthritis.

It also reduces blood pressure and improves the ratio of good to bad blood fats.

WITh her frizzy ‘poodle’ hairstyle and her outlandish hippie-bohemian clothes, she

sometimes resembled an upmarket Dame vivienne Westwood.

Her face was so tightened by repeated plastic surgery that she often looked like a Pekingese with Botox.

The amazing Duchess of Alba, who died last week aged 88 at her home, the Duenas Palace in Seville, was a vivid, spectacular and legendary figure not only in her native Spain, but throughout the international rich set.

She was held up as one of the more extreme examples of the plastic surgeon’s skill — or, perhaps, the lack of it.

Although she never commented on what operations she might have undergone — indeed, she explicitly denied her natural beauty had ever needed enhancement — it was clear she went under the knife on many occasions and that she had multiple injections of Botox.

A famed beauty in her youth, she came to look more bizarre with each operation. Her lips were filled out, her nose altered, her cheeks plumped up, her wrinkles removed, her brow lifted.

The effect was to lengthen the shape of her face and to make her mouth look too big, while constant filler injections reduced her eyes to pinholes.

One of the richest women in the world, with a personal fortune in

excess of £3 billion, even after giving away inheritances worth millions to her fractious children, she owned fabulous palaces throughout Spain, as well as one of the world’s greatest art collections, with priceless works by Rembrandt, Titian, Rubens, Velazquez,

Goya and Renoir.

Yet the Duchess always insisted she was not rich: ‘I have a lot of art works, but I can’t eat them, can I?’ she said.

Cayetana, as she was known to her family and friends, was seven times a Duchess, once a Countess-Duchess, 19 times a Marquesa, 22 times a Countess, and once a Viscountess.

As the possessor of more than 50 officially recognised titles, she held more than any other person in the world, according to Guinness World Records.

In 1947, at the age of 21, Cayetana married a

Spanish naval officer and son of a duke at a glittering international

ceremony described by the New York Times as ‘the most expensive wedding in the world’.

To the very end, she retained her incredible gusto and love of life. ‘I confess I am thinking of keeping on living,’ she said recently, ‘although it’s only so I can enjoy the expression on people’s faces when I point at them and say: “I’m going to bury you all.” ’

lOST PAINTINg by brItIsH artIst JoHn DunCan FerGusson WHICH sPent 100 years In an attIC seLLs For reCorD £638,000.

A LOST painting by artist John Duncan

Fergusson which was discovered in an attic has sold for a record £638,500.

When it went under the hammer at Christie's Modern British and Irish Art Evening Sale in London last week, it had a guide price of £80,000.

But it ended up selling for eight times the estimate to an anonymous bidder and a world record for the artist at auction.

Fergusson painted 'Poise', of a woman posing in a blue dress, in 1916.

But it hasn't been seen publicly after it was shown in London at the artist's 1918 Connell Gallery exhibition.

The oil painting had been hidden away before being discovered in a French attic.

The painting previously belonged to a couple who were friends of Claude Monet before it was rediscovered in the attic in Giverny by their grandchildren.

Prior to the sale, Andre Zlattinger, senior director, Head of Modern British Art, Christie's London, described

'Poise' as a 'a really exceptional work, of huge beauty and appeal'.

Mr Zlattinger added that he expected the artwork to do 'very well at auction'.

He said: 'The market for modern British and Irish art continues to be strong, appealing to collectors worldwide.

'We are very pleased with the result for John Duncan Fergusson's recently discovered masterpiece, 'Poise', which sparked fiercely competitive bidding, realising £638,500, a new world record for the artist at auction, far exceeding its pre-sale estimate.'

At the London auction, 25 of the 34 lots were sold, totalling £8.8 million.

A sculpture by Dame Barbara Hepworth was the top lot, selling to a private UK buyer for £1.1 million.

The oil painting, pictured, was offered with a guide price of £80,000 but sold for nearly eight times that

We get asked this question a lot! And, our answer is always; “well, it depends...”

To recommend a single supplement we need to know your basic health history, current health status as well your health goals. However, for simplicity's sake I'm going to write this article assuming you have addressed the following 4 points;

1.You eat a nutritious balanced diet2.You've had your allergies & intolerances checked 3.You live a healthy lifestyle i.e. get adequate sleep, exercise etc4.You manage your stress levels

Now, once these areas are under control here is the one supplement we would recommend if you came to us with this health goal;

To prevenT cHronIc Illnessvitamin D

It is a known fact that most of us are deficient in this essential nutrient. We simply don't spend enough time (uncovered and un-sunscreen-ed) in the sun each day and don't consume enough dietary sources either.

Numerous studies show reduced cancer risk [1] when your vitamin D levels are in the optimal range. Vitamin D has also shown to be protective against autism [2] and hives [3]; it improves MS (multiple sclerosis) symptoms [4], and helps cognition and brain function, reducing Alzheimer’s. [5] Vitamin D helps to reduce the effects of pain from fibromyalgia [6] and Vitamin D deficiency accelerates neurological decline.[7]

These are just a few examples of the protective benefits of vitamin D against chronic illness – there are many more! Therefore, it’s a good idea to get your levels checked at least once a year by your healthcare provider and supplement accordingly.

Improve my concenTrATIon, memory AnD mooDomega 3

One of the best things you can do for your brain is to take omega 3 fish oil. Like vitamin D, it is difficult to consume adequate amounts from dietary sources, therefore almost everyone should be supplementing (according to their needs) on a daily basis. Our brains are 60% fat after all, so in order to optimally perform you need to feed it what it needs.

The brain uses omega 3 to insulate nerve cells allowing them to communicate better with one another. This then translates into incredible neurological benefits such as; relieving depression, helping with anxiety, improving concentration and boosting memory function.Chat to your trusted healthcare practitioner before you

supplement because quality is key when it comes to Omega 3!

To loWer my blooD pressuremagnesium

Magnesium acts like a natural calcium channel blocker (CCB) to reduce blood pressure. It helps limit the amount of calcium or the rate at which calcium flows into the heart muscle and arterial cell walls. Calcium stimulates the heart to contract more forcefully. When calcium flow is limited, your heart’s contractions aren’t as strong and your blood vessels are able to relax, leading to lower blood pressure.

Magnesium deficiency is extremely common and often is the cause of hypertension in the first place. Again, quality is key when it comes to supplementation. Read “The Best & Worst Forms of Supplemental Magnesium” on our Lifestyle Health website to figure out which is the right form for you.

To quIckly recover from colDs AnD flu'svitamin c

Once you've contracted a cold or flu, vitamin C is the go-to nutrient that can help shorten the duration and get you feeling better faster. However, it must be taken in high doses. More specifically, dosing every 20 minutes to an hour until bowel tolerance has been reached (i.e. you experience diarrhea).[8] Dr. Linus Pauling believed that the minimum amount that should be taken daily was around 15g! [9] Now, this may sound like a lot but being sick dramatically increases the body's need for vitamin C.

In high doses it acts as a natural antihistamine, anti-inflammatory and free radical scavenger that up-regulates the immune system in a powerful way; improving symptoms and speeding up recovery,

To sTAy younger longerco-q10

CoQ10 is used by the mitochondria in every cell of your body to produce energy. Without sufficient amounts, mitochondrial function is severely impaired, accelerating the ageing process as well as many age-related diseases.

Co-Q10 is also important for cellular protection. It is a powerful lipid-soluble antioxidant that reduces oxidative stress in the body. It even helps recycle other antioxidants, such as vitamin C and E, preventing premature DNA damage. According to Dr. Stephen Sinatra, research shows Co-Q10 helps maintain lifelong youthfulness as well as improves the quality of life until the end. [10]

To Improve eye HeAlTHAstaxanthin

Thought to be the most powerful antioxidant found in nature, Astaxanthin is a must-have supplement when it comes to optimising eye health. It is unique in the sense that it is both water and fat soluble, offering protection to the entire cell. It may also be taken in high doses due to the fact that it cannot function as a pro-oxidant (i.e. cause rather than combat oxidation).

Another benefit is that, unlike other carotenoids, Astaxanthin is able to cross the blood-retinal barrier. The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory protection it offers here dramatically reduces the risk for cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration and blindness.

fInAl poInTsThese 6 nutrients are the best of the best when it

comes to optimising health. And since you'll only be taking one (according to your health goal), make sure the quality is the best of the best too.

You Are A HumAn Being not A HumAn Doing

The writer Laurens van

der Post once complained that there was no shortage of do-ers in the world but too few be-ers. People were all rushing around trying to make their lives relevant by doing things, he said. But where were those who were whole, balanced and simply happy – people who didn’t have to prove anything? All my life we came to Salt Rock to sniff the sea air and bask in its peace. Yes, it’s grown enormously and if Van der Post was still around he may not think it qualifies as a slow and dreamy place anymore but I find here the same peace and comfort that I got out of those many holidays. I’m so grateful to my wonderful yoga group for giving me a reason to get up in the mornings – I never don’t feel like stretching and going inside my body in the great yoga way. After morning class I am very happy to have little to do – maybe pottering around at home or walking down to the beach. I’m so grateful for this time of life where I feel I have enough, I want for nothing. I love my rough edged road that leads me to the beach; I hope they never create formal pavements. Sadly I often see a squashed frog or snake – a reminder of all the wild creatures around us. I’m grateful for my strong spine and powerful legs as I stride along on good feet and aware of how much my life depends on strength and mobility. I have days when I don’t require my car but of course I’m grateful it’s parked there for when I venture down to Umhlali to the school

or nip up to Lifestyle and wonder at how any road can take that long to take shape. Nothing annoys me, nothing gets on my nerves, I am content. I don’t judge harshly and I wish people well not just because I am a goody two shoes but just because nothing ruffles me – if someone pulls in front of me I just let them in. I never hoot at anyone – I enjoy silence too much. No crazy weather fazes me, I enjoy it all, wind, stillness, cloud – all these conditions have their attributes. I don’t know why I’m such a happy little fellow, I just put it down to not holding any grudge, never being the victim and just being older and wiser. I laugh uproariously at anything remotely funny because it’s fabulous to laugh. I don’t have to be busy, I prefer not to be, the days skim by and suddenly its evening yoga – yay – again, I never don’t feel like it. In come a fabulous group of mostly younger people with ready smiles and the glow of youth and I’m delighted to have something to pass on to them, something in common and the joy of their youthful buzz around me. I couldn’t be luckier – ok so tomorrow maybe the washing machine packs up and wipes the smile off my face for a while but not for long. I know I’ll bounce back – it must be all the great breathing and twisting – if you’re feeling less than fabulous you’ll just have to come along and try it and find out what I’m on about! Be prepared to have looser clothing and be in a perpetually good mood – oh and remember you don’t have to be busy all the time!

Living with pain is not normal. pain

is a sign of tissue damage,

stress, injury, breakdown or other malfunctions in the body.

I am amazed at how many people I chat to at the gym that are experiencing some sort of sciatica, frozen shoulder, sore neck, bad back etc.. They simply accept it as part of “getting older”. Outside the gym, people love using their pain as an excuse not to exercise as they fear they might make matters worse. In many cases, this is really just an excuse to dodge the issue (how dare I say this?)ExErcISE IS mEDIcInE.

I am not saying that you must ignore your chronic sciatica and go for a run to fix it. That will definitely not

fix it. Start your exercise regime with seeking professional advice to relieve the pain and taking the necessary steps to prevent it from returning. Avoiding exercise is not the solution to prevent it from returning.motIon IS LotIon, rESt IS ruSt.

Learn how to move your body joint by joint. Your body is programed to preserve energy and it will always move in the path of least resistance. Unfortunately, because of this, your body will use tight, painful joints less than stronger, more flexible ones resulting in poor movement patterns.

SIttIng DEStroyS your PoSturE.There is so much that you can do

to help you move pain free and sitting is not one of them. In fact, sitting in front of the television, at your desk or in your car, could be one of the main reasons causing you pain. Your body

will adapt to your daily lifestyle so make sure you don’t become a professional sitter. It’S EASIEr tHAn you tHInk.

There is so much that you can do to start moving with less pain and it’s often easier than you think but it is not just any type of exercise that will do the trick. Start with gentle mobility and flexibility exercises and work on improving your posture. Learn how to activate and stabilise muscles and joints, then move on to becoming fitter, stronger and younger.

If it’s important to you, you will find a way. If it’s not, you’ll find an excuse.

SugAr may be sweet - but its effects on the body are far from it.

According to new research, too much sugar doesn't just lead to weight gain, but also depression, anxiety and stress.

Eating a diet high in fructose as a teenager makes depression and anxiety worse, scientists found.

It also alters how the brain response to stress, they said.

Fructose is a sugar found naturally in fruits and vegetables but is also added to processed foods and drinks - from biscuits to ice cream.

Scientists have found fructose appears to be linked to serious modern epidemics such as cancers, heart disease, hypertension, kidney damage, type 2 diabetes and even dementia.

But now researchers say it also stimulates pathways in the brain that affect how it responds to stress, which have important effects for behaviour.

It can worsen the symptoms related to depression and anxiety, they said.

These effects are particularly concerning during the teenage years, when a person’s stress response develops.

If the body’s stress response becomes too sensitive, teenagers risk growing up susceptible to high levels of stress.

Prolonged exposure to stress can

raise blood pressure, suppress the immune system, increase the risk of heart attack and stroke, contribute to infertility, and speed up the aging process.

As part of the study, lead author Constance Harrell of Emory University in Atlanta, U.S., and her team gave teenage and adult rats either a standard diet, or one high in fructose.

After 10 weeks, they exposed the rats to stress, forcing them to swim or putting them in an elevated maze.

The teenage rats fed the high-fructose had a different stress hormone response to the test, including producing more of the stress hormone cortisol than the adult rats.

They showed depressed and anxious behaviour in response to the tests.

Scientists found that a genetic pathway in the brain that plays a key role in regulating the way it responds to stress was also altered as a result of the

BeINg “inked” is as commonplace today as it was in prehistoric human history. Our ancient forefathers used

body tattoos for all manner of things including tribal customs (e.g. showing coming of age), to denote social status, or just to mark ownership of slaves. Indeed, many a mummy will be found littered with tattoos.

Fortunately, we need not take our tattoos with us to the “other side”. A simple chemical extraction process done by tattooing a removal solution over your unwanted tattoo is all it takes to get “de-inked”. Rejuvi’s special formulation binds to the inorganic elements in the original tattoo ink and draws it to the skin surface, creating a scab which will fall off in a week or

two, leaving skin that’s clearly ink-free!Of course, not all tattoos are created

equal, nor are all humans for that matter. So while some of us will have successful removal after one session, others may require two or three.

The findings indicate that eating a diet high in fructose throughout the teenage years may exacerbate depressive behaviours, researchers said.

They may also affect the way the body and brain responds to stress, they added.

‘Our results offer new insights into the ways in which diet can alter brain health and may lead to important implications for adolescent nutrition and development,' Ms Harrell concluded.

Where there is love there

is life...

For Jini and Ebrahim Zoutenberg it

was the wedding they had dreamed

about. They were married in Westbrook in a ceremony

witnessed by their closest friends

and family. What followed next was like a Hollywood movie. The old Clairwood Race Course was the

perfect backdrop to the celebrations

that followed. Barry Bowditch captured the

memories that they will cherish for a lifetime. We wish the happy couple much joy and many

blessings in their life together as

husband and wife.

THERE'S JAUNTY, and then there's the game-ending, backboard-shattering slam dunk of jaunty, the Piaggio Vespa 946

Ricodo Italiano scooter. This white bird of paradise was at my Monterey hotel when I arrived last week and was getting more attention than the circle-drive full of Lambos.

Veterans instantly recognized the genius of it. Every year during the classic-car weekend, the Monterey Peninsula hosts the world's most expensive traffic jam. Solution? A Vespa. For two reasons: One, you can ride a step-through scooter comfortably in street clothes or even dress attire, much more so than a sport bike, over which one sort of curls up in the fetal position. Two, scooters are narrow, nimble and forgiving, which makes them perfect to split lanes and ride the shoulder around bumper-to-bumper traffic.

Don't wag your finger at me, Mom. If it's legal (in California) and it cuts a half-hour from my trip back to the lodge, you bet I'm going to split lanes. That Roederer isn't going to drink itself.

And so on Sunday morning, those attending the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance car show might have seen me zipping past them in my totally sick new double-breasted blazer, on my snow-white Vespa, jauntiness like a wind at my back, wearing a Vespa-branded helmet that was 100% "Spaceballs."

Here's Vespa, in 25 words or less: Corradino D'Ascanio, Roberto Colaninno and "Roman Holiday." The first is the aeronautical engineer who, in the bombed-out remains of Piaggio's factory in Pontedera, Italy, designed the first Vespa, a vehicle that put postwar Italy on wheels again. Mr. D'Ascanio's design was insightful, transforming, with a load-bearing, enclosing steel

monocoque, floorboards and exterior panels; engine and centrifugal clutch transmission connected to the rear wheel (no chain).

Mr. Colaninno is the financier whose company IMMSI SpA took over the struggling Piaggio beginning in 2003. Part of the turnaround plan was Vespa product development. Our little friend is California-legal, with a four-stroke, 150-cc engine and catalytic converter and a top speed on flat ground of about 60-65 mph.

But in a world of Hondas, Yamahas and supercheap Chinese scooters, Vespa's conversation with the consumer has to be about personal presentation and not just transportation. After all, our tester was about $10,000 out the door, a sum that would buy a fleet of other scooters. Vespa is trying mightily to position itself as an exclusive luxury confection. For example, Vespas don't come in model years; they come in "Collections." Our test bike had stitched Frua leather grips in lovely brick color to match the saddle (rake adjustable), and many grace notes of chromed materiality, high style and heritage.

That brings us to "Roman Holiday," a 1953 film starring Gregory Peck, Audrey Hepburn and what is some pretty lame backscreen projection. This film is Vespa's sinecure, its immortality, 118 minutes with two of the finest-looking people ever, frolicking on a Vespa. As long as they show that film, people will buy Vespas.

Obviously, your results may vary. Indeed, the Vespa may well be the most unforgiving fashion statement of all time. If you are skinny and beautiful, man or woman, between 18 and 25, yes, you can look amazing on a white Vespa. If you are grey and 54 and look like the Schwartz is with you, maybe not.

But I decided to own it. Jaunty? Yeah. That just happened.

VESPARADOES IN UmDlOTI

LOverS of the iconic Italian styled vespa see the world differently to other scooterists. Of course, the scooter is in a league of its own when it comes to two

wheeled motorized transport. While motorcyclists, or bikers as they generally prefer to be called, thunder or howl through the world astride their high powered metal steeds, the scooterist glides along with a perpetual grin because the world looks different from this altogether more upright perspective. But when it comes to pedigree, nothing comes close to the Vespa. It’s a matter of style, and whether yours is an ancient classic or a gleaming contemporary model, they evoke equal amounts of love and affection from Vesparadoes across the planet.

And when they come together as some did in Umdloti on the weekend, they draw admiring glances from just about everyone – hey, life’s cool on a Vespa…

The New Citroën C1 heralds a new era of city motoring, where the emphasis is on practicality and efficiency tailored for

the urban environment, but without sacrificing driver enjoyment. With a cheeky personality, eager road manners, unrivalled manoeuvrability and low operating costs, getting around has never been so much fun.

Adding indisputable fashion appeal to the C1 range is the stylish C1 Airscape, which enables an al fresco feeling at the touch of a button. A full-length, retractable fabric roof slides all the way back to the rear hatch so that you can let the sunshine in…and when necessary it can be closed in seconds, for refinement and insulation which matches the steel-roofed version. It really does offer the best of both worlds.

The interior combines a vibrant design with user-friendly features. Your ideal day-to-day partner, it boasts a range of convenience features and convenient storage compartments.

The zippy newcomer sets high standards for road handling and ride comfort. A new electrically-assisted rack and pinion delivers precise and accurate steering.

South African customers can look forward to the new PureTech engine mated to a five-speed manual gearbox. This 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder, 61kW petrol engine achieves fuel consumption of 4,3 litres/100 km on the combined cycle, while emitting just 99g/km of CO2. Rewarding performance is ensured thanks to 116 Nm, endowing the C1 with 0-100 km/h acceleration of 11 seconds and a top speed of 170 km/h. Servicing is only required every 20 000 km.

With its low running costs, affordable price tag, city-friendly sizing, zesty performance, and Gallic flair, the new Citroën C1 is the perfect combination of freedom and fun. It’s a feeling that’ll prove hard to resist.
