This week, I had the pleasure of going to Dubai to attend a Nord Anglia Education (NAE) Conference. This conference brought together all the Principals and senior staff from NAE schools in the Middle East and South East Asia. As we announced recently to our school community, the BIS

Vietnam Group has merged to become a part of this truly global organization, which is a family of premium International schools located in many different parts of the world. During the conference, it became abundantly clear to me that BIS Hanoi has much to gain from this amalgamation. As communicated during the week, our parents have been invited to a meeting next Wednesday where the NAE Regional Director, George Ghantous, will make a presentation outlining the benefits of this merger to us as a school. Indeed, I had the pleasure of meeting Mr Ghantous in Dubai and he is very much looking forward to meeting parents, staff and students on his visit to Hanoi.

In my absence, I have heard many positive reports from school regarding the various scientific activities that have taken place during the school’s first Science Week. I am grateful to all the staff who organised such exciting activities to ensure that the students had wonderful scientific experiences.

As I reported in last week’s newsletter, last weekend was a busy period for our students and I am extremely proud of how they represented the school in the DoEIA Bronze Award practice walk, Maths Olympiad and Football. Once again, I am grateful to all the staff who gave up their own personal time to support these activities.

I do hope that you all have a most pleasant weekend.

It was a very busy weekend with the DoEIA practice expedition to Mau Chau, the Maths Olympiad at St Pauls and the football tournament at UNIS. My thanks go to all the staff that gave up their weekend to run these activities for students.

This week has been Science Week which has involved a number of activities both in and out of the classroom. One of the highlights was the assembly led by all science staff and the visit of Dr. Froth, the bubble man from Australia. Students have also had the opportunity to answer a wide range of questions around the school.

In the recent Intermediate Mathematics Challenge, organised by UKMT (UK Mathematics Trust), two of our students scored so well that they are going on to the next level. Nghia in Year 11, who scored the best in the school, sat the “Pink Kangaroo” Challenge paper on Thursday. 3000 students worldwide also sat the same paper then. Phi Long in Year 9 achieved such a high score for his age group that he has been selected to go onto the first round of IMOK Maths Olympiad – one of

only 500 students globally to do so. The later rounds of this challenging competition are the theme of a new film out this year called X + Y. Phi Long’s paper was also sat on Thursday.

Ms Vaughan and I are in Macau over the weekend at the Asia Pacific International Baccalaureate conference. Following a key note speech from Julia Gillard, the ex-Australian Prime Minister yesterday we have been in a succession of sessions on various aspects of the IB. We look forward to reporting back to our colleagues next week.

KS4/5 MIXED VOLLEYBALL vs ST PAUL

After the excitement of International Week last week, this week has been Science Week in the UK and the Secondary section. The Primary school decided to focus on one special day of science and to make it a really special and memorable day.

We started the day with teachers swapping year groups to create a different dynamic for everyone concerned. Key Stage 2 teachers moved to EYC and worked with Foundation Stage and Year 1 and 2 classes, while EYC staff came to the main building to work with our Year 3 to 6 children. The teachers had prepared special science activities, with the emphasis being on creating a ‘Wow!’ sensation for the children. For some, science seemed almost like magic as they explored different materials and equipment. There was certainly a lot of ‘Wow!’ evident in the expressions on children’s faces!

A special science assembly followed later in the morning, led by Ms. Orchard from our Secondary science department. Years 1 to 6 were enthralled to learn more about the main ‘Gases in the Air’ and their composition, whilst at the same time observing the properties of liquid nitrogen, oxygen and solid carbon dioxide with some very interesting and sometimes dramatic practical demonstrations.

The afternoon saw yet more ‘Wow!’ moments when the children had the opportunity to enjoy an incredible Bubble Show by Dr. Froth! Dr. Froth entertained and delighted the children for 45 minutes with his amazing show of skills in manipulating giant bubbles. We saw massive doughnut-shaped bubbles, tightrope-walking bubbles, a diamond-shaped bubble, hysterical pet bubbles, bouncing bubbles, merry-go-round bubbles and he even put two students inside a giant bubble force field!

For our children, science will never be quite the same again!

The old saying goes, 'Literature makes the man'. Literature, which comprises novels, short stories, poetry, plays, rhymes, etc., is the foundation for the development of the human personality and the soul. Literacy teaching and learning in BIS aims designed to build that foundation in every student in our school.

Throughout the year, Vietnamese literature is taught in the Secondary section by topics, such as poetry, short stories, novels, journalism, drama, etc. The objective of the course is to explore the techniques of each category used by writers and poets, and explain their effect in creating a work of literary art as well as the aesthetic and educational meaning of the content.

To achieve this goal, we adopt a range of activities such as discussions of human and social issues brought forth in the work, and search for information through reading, internet access, videos, movies, etc., to support the learning goals. One of the things we have started which aims to help students enrich their literature material and living experiences is a book- reading program and meetings with writers/poets. At present, KS3 students are encouraged to borrow books from the library to take home to read and to build the habit of reading regularly. After reading a book, we ask students to write a book review. We hope this will be the bricks in building a foundation for literature materials as well as their living experiences. From there we hope students will discover the delights of reading and thus stay away from the “cyber-shop” for a while during the day.

Besides study in class, students are encouraged to actively participate in other cultural activities during the traditional Tet and Moon Festival, in many forms of cultural performances.

One of our missions now in BIS is heading towards the International Baccalaureate program which will be commencing in 2016; Vietnamese language will be one of the students’ options for that program.
