An Architect’s Perspective

How would you compare Bowden to other urban renewal projects?

It’s right up there! I think the success can be attributed to Renewal SA’s management and the forefront thinking of the masterplan. It has a focus on the community so it caters for all different forms of living (apartments, townhouses) and there’s a real diversity of people of all ages living in the area. The dynamics are really working.

What is the Design Review Panel and what is its purpose?

The Design Review Panel (DRP) oversees the design of buildings at Bowden to ensure that detailed minimum standard guidelines are met. This guarantees that Bowden will always be a unified, sustainable and attractive place to live.

It’s been set up from Day 1 to make sure the design guidelines are being met as the development grows. It can be demanding but in the long run you have to look at what’s been built and you can see the success.

What do you look at when designing homes at Bowden?

As designers we have to be mindful that this is a residential project. Our approach is not to focus on a building being monumental. It’s about facilitating the lifestyle of the people living there. We provide the backdrop to that.

We also do lots of research into the history and pick up on the aesthetics of the area and its origins. Our design response is really to the whole development – hardworking, industrial – reflecting the Bowden ethos.

How does the Green-Star Rating impact your designs?

Any good designer should be addressing sustainability as a matter of course. We aim to get the energy rating up to reduce costs but the challenge is getting the right balance – keeping costs low but not compromising on comfort or style. Daylight, ventilation and fresh air are non-negotiable from our point of view. Everyone has a right to fresh air and sunlight.

How does the design of the upcoming townhouses interact with the surroundings and parks nearby?

Well there’s flexibility at both ground and upper level; we want to give people the freedom and flexibility to arrange their home and furniture as they want. We ensure good division between living spaces and bedrooms, light colours and smart design. The living space on the ground floor means you can open the back gate onto the reserve. Upstairs there are balconies that overlook the park. It’s strategically placed a little bit away from the main roads with linkages back to Plant 4, Jarmer’s Kitchen and transport options.

Tony Giannone, Director for Tectvs, a collaborative Architecture and Design studio with offices in Adelaide and Melbourne.

Tectvs has been involved at Bowden over quite a few years with Luminaire (Stage 1 & 2) and The Artisan. They are soon to introduce an exciting townhouse project that will be available early next year.
