Life Planning – Are You Where You Want To Be?
That is a very difficult question to ask many
people because they may not know where they want to be because they do not know their full
potential. Life coaching has been designed to help you reach your goals but transporting you
from where you are to where you want to be. Everyone falls into a certain category when
considering particular areas of their lives;
I have no idea what I want
I know exactly what I want but I don’t know how to go about getting it
I know what I want, I know how to get it but there is something holding me from
achieving it
I know what I want and how to get it and I am on track to getting it
I know what I want and I have it
One of the fundamentals of coaching is that the individual is the one best suited to determine
where they want to be and what they want. Under this premise, people who fall into one of the
first three categories are the best candidates for lifestyle management in co-operation with a
coach. There is no doubt that friends and family all care and have your best interests at heart but
they have a tendency to view your life from their perspective or to advise you based on their
limited experiences. What has proven good for them may not work for you.
Getting from the top three to the bottom two
Deep down inside, perhaps it’s called “gut feel” you may know what you want or don’t want,
however it may not be at a conscious level or it may reside in a part of you that even you do not
know exists. A life coach can help with your accessing your own inner self and knowledge and
in doing so you will be in a position to establish exactly what you want in a given scenario. In
establishing your lifestyle plan the coaching techniques used will be established along the way,
no two people are alike and no two coaching techniques are alike.
What happens when you know what you want?
Once you have established your desires, life coaching aims to build on your own resourcefulness
so that you can figure out how to get it, all based on the understanding that you know your
capabilities better than anyone and where you may need coaching. At this stage your coach will;

Support you
Help you in clarification of;
the concrete steps that are realistic and doable as you move forward toward your goal as well as
pushing the limit on your internal resources and delving deeper into what you still need as well
as identifying that which is outside your control.
One of the most challenging parts of the process of life planning is maintaining the motivation
and confidence to see it through to realization. There is such a saying that “if something can go
wrong it will”; when this happens and the obstacle in your way seems insurmountable your life
coach helps in maintaining your focus and aid by reinforcing why your goal is important to you.
These situations are where your resourcefulness and your state of mind are challenged; your life
coach will help you overcome these obstacles, not by doing it for you but to reinforce your own
inner strengths and abilities.
