DEAR FRIENDS,It is our pleasure to announce the 2012-2013 Lied Center Season of performing arts. You will find a wide variety of programs providing great entertainment and artistic inspiration. Through the continuing generosity of our sponsors, the Lied Center has enriched the lives of the people of Nebraska by presenting the greatest artists in the world for over 20 years.
This year’s season features everything from one of the biggest rock & roll icons of all time to America’s premier ballet company. As a season subscriber, you can enjoy tickets to every show you wish. Do not delay making your choices; our most popular programs often sell out with season tickets each year. By ordering season tickets, you will also enjoy great savings, the best available seating locations and avoid waiting in ticket lines. If you find yourself unable to attend a show you purchased in advance, we will exchange your tickets at no charge for another performance of equal value in the season.

The Rite of Spring, which premiered in 1913, stunned audiences with its incorporation of ancient, pagan mythology, Slavic folklore, and high modernist kinetic movement. Nijinsky promised it would “open new horizons flooded with different rays of sun.” He kept his promise. Founded in 1979, Lori Belilove & The Isadora Duncan Dance Company is the preeminent Isadora Duncan dance company performing in the world today.
Duncan created dances in homage to the Greek gods Apollo and Dionysius, and lesser gods, nymphs and heroes found in ancient Greek mythology. She infused her particular brand of American spirit with her love for the Greeks, convinced that the “Dance of the Future” should adhere to the ideals found in ancient Greek tragedy. SEATING PRIORITY: Major season ticket seating assignments are made on a first come, first served basis.
GROUP SALES: Beginning July 2, 2012, group discounts (for groups of 20 or more) are available for most Lied Center-presented performances. Call 402.472.8510.
STUDENTS AND YOUTH: Anyone 18 years of age or younger receives a discount for most Lied Center-presented events. University of Nebraska–Lincoln students receive a discount for eligible events with a valid student I.D. (one ticket per I.D.), provided the student pays Fund A activity fees.
UNL FACULTY AND STAFF: Payroll deduction for the purchase of season tickets is available as a service to all UNL Faculty and Staff, who also enjoy a 10% discount off single-ticket prices if season order is received by September 1, 2012. Please inquire with the Ticket Office at the time of purchase.
REFUNDS: There are no refunds on tickets except in the event of a cancelled show that is not rescheduled.
ADMISSION: Regardless of age, every person must have a ticket for admission. Children under 12 years of age must be accompanied by an adult at all Lied Center events.
EXCHANGES: Ticket exchanges are available as a benefit to season subscribers at no cost. Tickets must be returned to the ticket office at least 48 hours prior to the performance in order to exchange them for another event in the current season.
CONTENT ADVISORY: If you are unsure whether a performance is suitable for your child, please call the Ticket Office for a recommendation. The Lied routinely publishes content warnings when appropriate.
DANCING POLICY: In an effort to create a fun and safe environment for our patrons, the Lied Center has the following policy regarding dancing at Lied performances:
Patrons may dance in the area immediately in front of their seats as long as it is carried out in a manner that is respectful of other audience members. Dancing in the aisles and other common areas will not be permitted for safety reasons.
CONCERT ATMOSPHERE: Artists performing at the Lied Center often utilize amplified sound as part of their performance. Performances that create a concert atmosphere with higher volume levels are indicated with this symbol.

ARTS ACROSS NEBRASKA
The Arts Across Nebraska program is a major pillar of the Lied Center’s statewide mission. The program provides student matinees and public performances by world-class artists to rural Nebraska communities, preceded by in-school workshops for K–12 students.
In 2011/12, Turtle Island String Quartet and singer-songwriters Susan Werner with Trina Hamlin presented 12 public performances and student matinees as part of the Arts Across Nebraska program. In total, the program reached 5,536 people throughout the state.
The program has an excellent track record of introducing students to the power of the performing arts. In 2011/12, approximately 62% of participating students saw a professional string quartet for the first time in their lives, an experience made more noteworthy by the fact that Turtle Island is a groundbreaking, two-time GRAMMY® Award-winning group. THE SHAPE OF A GIRL ADDRESSES BULLYING
The Lied Center demonstrates the power of the arts to shed light on contemporary issues. Written by award-winning playwright Joan MacLeod, The Shape of a Girl used honesty, humor and profound insight to present a tough and complicated teenage world—a world where loyalty to a friend can have tragic results. Eight teachers and 150 students in Lincoln’s Irving and Mickle Public Middle Schools were engaged in a workshop led by nationally renowned UNL expert Dr. Susan Swearer, performer Georgina Beaty and RESPECT2, an Omaha-based company who uses research-based theater to engage youth. Participants talked about the play’s impact, engaged in frank discussions about social versus physical or cyber aggression and role-played strategies to both identify and prevent bullying. Teachers across the state enrolled in Practical Ways to Address Bullying in the Classroom and learned firsthand how the arts can illuminate sensitive issues in our day.

THE SCIENCE OF SOUND SPRING BREAK CAMP
Immersing and energizing area youth using the arts as a tool for learning joined the Lied Center, Time Warner Cable and Lincoln Public Schools in the eleventh year of an exciting partnership.
Over the 2012 spring break, an interdisciplinary camp held at Lefler Middle School infused the arts in hands-on science learning, technology, engineering and math (STEM) for five teachers and 40 middle and high school students from Lincoln Public Schools Community Learning Centers. Kennedy Center teaching artist John Bertles (Bash the Trash) led students’ study of the physics and mechanics of instrument-building and creation of personal string, percussion and horn instruments. Capped with a performance of Beatles favorites on stage with their peers, Science of Sound demonstrates how communities, corporations, and arts organizations can join forces to inform, educate, and inspire children across Nebraska.

POETRY AND THEATER IGNITES CREATIVITY
Since 2009, Sarah McKinstry-Brown has served as a teaching artist in Lied Center education programs. This spring she visited area schools to entice students, grades 3–9, to write poetry. Twenty teachers and over 400 students participated as McKinstry-Brown introduced similes and metaphors as a way for students to write about the favorite people in their lives.
The play Locomotion, an adaptation by the book’s author Jacqueline Woodson, was the source of inspiration for McKinstry-Brown’s visits to area schools. A Kennedy Center production, Locomotion follows the journey of 11-year old Lonnie Collins Motion, an African American boy who discovers a passion for writing poetry and a way to express his feelings about family and the tragic loss of his parents. Through these performance and residency experiences, students learned that something as simple as writing a poem can ignite creativity and start the journey of growing up.
PILOBOLUS—DANCING WITH ROBOTS
Robotics and dance? At the Lied Center the uncommon combination brought UNL dance and engineering students together with the professional dance company Pilobolus. The result? Students dancing with flying robots to live music, delighting over a hundred attendees at the Lied’s Johnny Carson Theater pre-performance “premiere” of the students’ collaboration. The Friends have created once-in-a-lifetime moments for millions of children, students and adults. Friends of Lied funding connects the community to world-class artists through numerous educational workshops and performances each year. THE LIED COMMONSThe Lied Center has expanded! The Lied Commons is a new addition to the Lied Center for Performing Arts. This building enhancement of over 8,000 square feet will provide an additional space at the Lied for small performances, receptions, lectures and other special events. The Commons is the first addition to the Lied Center since its opening in 1990 and has a dedicated entrance extending onto the Friends of Lied Plaza. The new venue will provide expanded opportunities for students, artists and patrons.
The Lied Commons features a multi-purpose space with a panoramic view of the UNL campus that seats up to 200 people theater-style or up to 160 for round table seating. It also features an eighteen-seat board room and catering kitchen. This venue was made possible by a gift from Ms. Christina Hixson with the Ernst F. Lied Foundation Trust, as part of the Campaign for Nebraska.
