Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

The assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into heaven has long been held as an important Catholic belief. Mary, who was without sin, was taken, body and soul, into the glory of heaven.

Mary's Assumption into heaven is best understood with regard for the full spectrum of Catholic beliefs about the person of Christ and the person of Mary. Only Mary, who was born without stain of original sin—the Immaculate Conception—could give birth to Christ, who is fully God and fully human. This is called the Immaculate Conception.

Because of Mary's role in God's plan of salvation, she does not suffer from the effects of sin, which are death and decay. Mary is the first to receive the fullness of the redemption that her son has won for all of humanity. The Church, therefore, recognises Mary as the sign of the salvation promised to all.

Mary's faith enabled her to recognise the work of God in her people's history and in her own life. Her openness to God allowed God to work through her so that salvation might come to all. Mary is a model and symbol of the Church.

May we be like Mary, open and cooperative in God's plan of salvation.

MJR Focus - Weeks 4 & 5

This week we ask you to be more like Jesus in your actions with others both at school and at home. The person of Jesus assists us with determining right from wrong.

Let us pray that we might treat each other with more kindness, more courtesy, more humility, patience and forgiveness.

Newsletter Report by Katelyn Vassallo | What’s Happening Around our School.

Last Thursday, we had a visit from Will who performed The Ned Show. Will is from the USA and he showed us some very cool yo-yo tricks. He spoke about the importance of positive behaviour, encouragement and growing our brain. NED stands for Never give up, Encourage others and Do your best.

This week the Year 6’s will be on School Camp at Burleigh Heads on the Gold Coast. We have a very early start to our Monday morning, meeting at the Mackay Airport at 5.00am. Hopefully we won’t be too cold with the cooler weather predicted for this week. Everyone is very excited and we are especially eager to check out Tom’s Confectionery Warehouse as well as 10-Pin Bowling, Bounce and Wet ‘n’ Wild. We are also looking forward to participating in the many challenging activities arranged by the CYC organisers such as canoeing, bodyboarding, tubing, rock wall and raft building. I’m sure it will be a very enjoyable camp.

Thank you to everyone who supported our Year 6 businesses to help fundraise for our camp. Also thank you to Mrs Carmody, Miss Anderson and the parent-helpers who are giving up their time to take us.

Term 3 Fees | School Fees are now OVERDUE. If you have overlooked your school fees, please make payment as soon as possible or make contact with the office to discuss payment options.

Gospel Reflection - Luke 12:32-48 - Be as servants, wide awake at the return of their master

This week’s gospel passage carries with it the expectation of the late 1st Century as the early Christians awaited the triumphant return of the Christ (sometimes called the Second Coming or the Parousia). This is a familiar theme through the gospels and, in fact, across the gospels we can see that the communities were beginning to face the realisation that the promised return was taking longer than they had expected.

In the gospel of Mark, it is clear that the community expects the Parousia at any moment, while by the time of the writing of the gospel of Luke, 10 or 15 years later, we can see that the language has taken on an aspect of uncertainty about the timing – it could be sooner or it could be later (‘It may be in the second watch he comes, or in the third…’).

What began to emerge was an attitude that if we don’t know when the Parousia will come, then we need to live ‘in anticipation’ of it. We need to live as if the Parousia were imminent. So, rather than waiting for the kingdom of God to be delivered, we must live our lives in such a way as to bring about the kingdom; to draw the kingdom into the present. Jesus often spoke of the kingdom as both near and not yet. If we all live the values of the kingdom, by our very actions we bring the kingdom into being.

This gives an incredible significance to the way we choose to live our lives. If we ‘invest’ in the kingdom by living out the values of the kingdom and living in expectation of the Parousia, then that ‘investment’ is its own reward.

Sacraments of Confirmation and First Communion

Congratulations to Nathan, Renae, Harrison, Matthew and Brianna who were fully welcomed in the Catholic Church by Bishop Michael and Fr. Alex. on Sunday. These children have been journeying with the support of their parents and the parish to become fully initiated into the Catholic Church.

I extend my thanks to the families and parish members for their prayerful support of the children during the formation process. We were privileged to have our chief shepherd, Bishop Michael McCarthy, celebrate the sacraments and the mass with the community of St Michael’s. The special part of the celebration was when Bishop Michael invited the candidates to the altar to fully realise the significance of the Eucharist which commemorates Christ’s sacrifice.

Thank you Mr Ballinger-Oches and Mrs Patroni for the beautiful music, Mrs Barnard for assisting behind the scenes and to the parents and parish members for the shared morning tea which was a lovely time together as a community to celebrate.

Yours in Christ,Mr Stuart PresleyAssistant Principal (Religious Education) [email protected]

The spirit of Jesus is alive at St Anne’s! “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbour as yourself” - Luke 10:27

The staff and students of St Anne’s extend their thanks to the parents and families who regularly donate items to our giving table (located in the school office). We strive as a Catholic school community to care for our neighbours through acts of Mercy. Our care for our neighbours is an important part of our ministry at St Anne’s.

These small items go a long way to helping community members and families in need. All donations are gladly accepted. This includes small items (pens, pencils, food, clothing) or even a cooked small meal (e.g. spaghetti bolognaise).

Amen.

Building Resilience in ChildrenThe world can be a frightening place. As parents, we are constantly making choices for our children to keep them safe and to protect them. However, it is not possible to protect our children from all the ups and downs of life. They need to develop the ability to cope during stress or adversity, when things go wrong or different to how they planned. This is RESILIENCE. Creating a more resilient child is not about clearing diversity out of their way. As much as we want to swoop in and protect them every time they stumble (trust me I know this feeling), we will not be doing them any favours. A little bit of stress can help develop strategies to deal with life.

We all have different levels of resilience and different ways of responding and recovering to stressful times. We also have different ways of showing when the demands placed on us outweigh our capacity to cope. This is the same with children. They may become emotional, withdrawn, or angry. Even the most resilient person will have days when it gets too much.

So where does resiliency come from? The individual characteristics we are born with, and the environment we grow up in – our family, community and broader society, shape resilience.

Now for the how. There are so many strategies that we can use to help build strong and resilient children. Each week look out in the newsletter for a new strategy that you can try with your kids. You can adapt them to make them fit your families own needs. If you want any more details about any of the strategies I include, feel free to email me on [email protected]

Let’s start with ourselves: Modelling resiliency

· Children learn from us. They watch everything we do. Next time you get disappointed, or things are going your way, be conscious of how you react and respond. Did your response suit the situation? Was your emotion appropriate? As parents sometimes we get overwhelmed and overreact, not because of that one incident, such as a glass of milk beings spilt, but because of the ten other incidents that occurred before that and we have reached our limit. That is fine. Talk to your child about what happened and why. Normalise the emotions. However, if you find you are not coping and often overreacting, then maybe it is time to think about a little bit of self-care. Parents often forget that they need to look after themselves sometimes too.

Keep an eye out for more strategies to build your child’s resilience in the next newsletter.
