    Community Development ResearchSpecial Interest Group

As part of the research agenda of theCollege, implemented by its researcharm, the Center for Health Researchand Movement Science, the CommunityDevelopment Research Special InterestGroup (ComDev SIG) aims to operatewith community development andresearch at the core of its function, aligned with the Universitys thrusttowards knowledge generation directedat empowering its partner communities. We seek to enhance, engage andempower the partner communities ofthe University and the College throughthe conscientious use of the bestavailable evidence; conduct

collaborative and community-focusedprogram planning, development, monitoring and evaluation; creation ofopportunities for the advocacy ofpersons with disabilities; promotion ofhealth and wellness through innovativeand context-sensitive programs thatmaximizes the level of function andquality of life of individuals, familiesand the community as a whole; activeparticipation in the co-creation ofknowledge; active involvement in theformulation of rehabilitation policiesthat inform and influence healthtowards catalyzing positive socialchange.

Community development is the processof developing active, healthy andsustainable communities based onsocial justice, inclusion and mutualrespect. It seeks to affect positivehealth and social change throughcommunity engagement, rehabilitation, participation and empowerment. As aresearch group, we aim to promotehealth and enable participation ofindividuals, groups and populationswithin the context of their communities. In order to realize this, the groupengages in a variety of initiatives, including:

Community-Involved Research.Research activities that involvemembers of the communities asparticipants in various researchactivities not directly related to, norconducted in, the recognized partnercommunities of the college oruniversity. The main aim of these typeof researches is to bridge the gapbetween the individual and his/herimmediate local community by

addressing the underlying problemsthrough capacity building, skillsdevelopment and/or knowledgetransfer. This is the first step towardsthe creation of community health andrehabilitation programs. The idea is forall community-involved researches toevolve into community-based orcommunity-development types of

researches. (Example: Recruitment ofparticipants for clinical research whichis not necessarily based on establishedneeds in the community, nor aimed atcommunity-level programdevelopment.)

Community-Based Research.Research activities that involvemembers of the communities asparticipants, takes into considerationthe contextand is aimed towards eitherthe promotion of health or enablementof participation ofindividuals or groups.

At this level, we address the concernsof vulnerable groups or sectors bycreating local community programs. At

the forefront are community-based andrelevant health and rehabilitationservices aimed at supporting theindividual members of these groups orsectors. This type and level of researchaims a barrier-free, accessible andquality community life engagement andparticipation. (Example: Communityneeds assessment, programdevelopment based on identified needs, program implementation, monitoringand evaluation of programs.)

Community DevelopmentResearch. Research activities whosemain aim is towards population-levelpromotion of health and enablement ofparticipation within the context of theircommunities. At this stage and level ofresearch, preconceived paradigms areredirected and shifted at the context of

the national community. The aims ofthis type of research is informing andinfluencing positive change in socialideologies, cultural values and socio-political structures. Directing effectfrom a top-down perspective, theultimate outcome is a healthycommunity that is livable, sustainableand equitable. Is Bayanihanstill alive, or just a thingof the past? Are Bayanisstill among ourmidst, or an archival artifact found in

books? As ballsy as it may sound, theCollege of Rehabilitation Sciencesresoundingly saysNO!

Bayanihan is a Filipino tradition wheremembers of a community (Bayan)perform united communal work(Bayani) towards the accomplishmentof task. The conventionalrepresentation is that of a group oftownsfolk lifting, carrying andtransferring a nipa hut (Filipino house)from one place to another. Eachmember of the community plays aparticular role, whether in the actualtransfer of the house, in thepreparation prior to the transfer, or thefiesta to conclude the challenge.Considered as a community event, thisoccasion celebrates the Filipino spirit ofcooperation, volunteerism and service. The word bayanihan has come to meana communal spirit that makesseemingly impossible feats possiblethrough the power of unity andcooperation.

Borrowing concepts from Bayanihan, the community development activitiesof the College of Rehabilitation Sciencesaimed directly at its partnercommunities and institutions empowersits members in the planning, development, implementation andevaluation of community-based healthand rehabilitation programs througheffective community organization andinvolvement.

This project solidifies the recentlyacknowledged partnership betweenUST-CRS and the Municipality of

Abucay, Bataan. To mark its kick-off,the College prepares introductory andprecipitating activities that will sparkand maintain the interest of thecommunity, as well as provide them

with a glimpse of future projects tocome. Furthermore, this is a goodopportunity to test the waters on bothside, and provide valuable insight to thepossible strengths, opportunities, weaknesses and threats that will betaken into consideration in creatinghealth and rehabilitation programs inthe community in the future.

    EDITORYAL

ba napili maging isangoccupational therapist? At

Paglilingkod. Yan angnatatanging kasagutan. Dahilgusto kong mag-lingkod. Gusto

    bumabasa nito, sya ring
