    Darmawisata ke Images of Singapore

As part of the English Language (EL) curriculum, shared experiences are provided for the learning of writing skills through the Shared Book Approach (SBA) and Field-Based Learning, also known as Learning Journey. This year, the Primary 1 and 2 students visited the River Safari on 9 and 17 April 2015 respectively in alignment with STELLAR themes My River (Primary 1) and Life in a Shell (Primary 2).

The students had much fun learning and gathering information about the river creatures in an authentic setting. This has helped them to appreciate the unit content better and relate their learning to the final writing task. In fact, all those who had joined them on the Learning Journey, both teachers and parents, have had much to learn from the experience.

    Environmental Week 2015

    TKP Student Achievements

In the week of 20 to 24 April, TKP celebrated Earth Day (22 April) by starting the week with a string of activities organised during the recess times for students to learn about the various environmental concerns and how they can play a part in caring for Mother Earth.

The series of activities were varied and engaging a classroom lesson presentation on the importance of caring for our environment; the making of handprint pledge on how they could each save the environment; a live cooking demonstration to raise awareness of the benefits of consuming organic food and its impact on our environment; and interesting magic tricks involving water that students can try out on their own. They were encouraged to participate in all the activities by collecting stamps on

This interdisciplinary project, involving English, Science and ICT, completed during English lessons, is also one of the key level programmes for Primary 6.

Moving ahead, Wednesdays have been set aside as one day in the week when Green Monitors will bring down plastic bottles and paper to be placed into the recycling bin. Just as Mrs Caroline Wu, our Principal, reiterated to the entire school on Earth Day, caring for the environment is not a one-off or weeklong affair; It is the choices that we make every day that matter!

Games On!The finals of Games On!, TKPs annual games fiesta took place on Thursday, 2 April 2015, at the Bedok Indoor Sports Hall. In line with our belief of developing every child holistically, Games On! is designed to promote values of sportsmanship, perseverance and excellence and is the perfect platform for students to develop and display these values.

This year, students got around to showing their resourcefulness and creativity by creating pom-poms and flags on the spot to show support for their friends competing in the events. A total of 17 games were contested over the course of the event, including Tug-of War, Best Mascot, Best House Spirit and the parent-teacher games. At the end of the intense competition, Pegasus was crowned the Champion of Games On! 2015. In addition, they walked away with Best Mascot award while Unicorns

were the deserving recipient of the Best House Spirit award.

5 students, the participants of Camp L.E.A.D were sweating it out and working hand in hand to compete for the title of best team for the camp. Here is a photo journal that captures their days there.

  • STRENGTHENING CHARACTER AND INCULCATING VALUES 5

Total Defence Day (TDD)This year, TDD commemoration activities took place in Week 7 of Term 1. On Monday 16 February, teachers conducted a Connecto lesson to mark Singapores fall to the Japanese in 1942 as well as to commemorate 50 years of both Singapores independence and the formation of the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF). Teachers urged students to remember that the responsibility of nation-building lies not just with the SAF but with each and every Singaporean. On Wednesday 18 February, after the Chinese New Year celebration, the school watched a presentation of a vivid recollection of the fall of Singapore on 15th February 1942, which also happened to be the first day of Chinese New Year then. To remind students of the hardships that our forefathers endured during the war years, teachers conducted lessons without electricity in the classrooms followed by the eating of steamed sweet potatoes, a staple food during war times.

TKP celebrated International Friendship Day on 11 April in some style! As an event to commemorate friendships between Singapore and other countries, we had booths set up at the school hall representing 5 countries. The countries represented were New Zealand, South Korea, Mexico, Canada and Turkey.

The booths, set up with the invaluable support of parent volunteers and teachers, showcased the food, games, music and culture of the different countries. TKP students had the wonderful opportunity to learn

    International FriendshipDay (IFD)

about the amazing cultures of these countries and basked in the fun and games prepared. The students learnt to do the Mori Haka, played with the Mexican piata, learned the Korean Gwiyomi song, discovered more about the Canadian maple syrup, and watched a demonstration of the traditional Turkish painting technique. We were also proud to see our students don different international costumes on the day. We will remember IFD 2015 as a celebration of diversity and we are grateful for the global friends we have!

Tribute to Mr Lee Kuan Yew at TKP

Below are what our students have to say about their experiences:I have learnt (from Mr Lee) to treat other races equally and not take things for granted. Jaysri Lyra, 6 Diligence

Singapore went through tough times yet he (Mr Lee) continued to make many smart choices and solved many problems. He even continued to serve Singapore when he stepped down as Prime Minister. Spencer, 5 Altruism

We are heartened by the students expression of gratitude. Of special mention is one of our students, Natasha Poon of 5 Diligence she has served as a volunteer with her family at the Floating Platform and has inspired a fellow student, Chantal Phuay of 6 Benevolence,

In school, students are also encouraged to pen their tributes at the NE Gallery and reflect on Mr Lees contributions.

We hope that more of our students will be inspired by Mr Lees life and legacy, as well as good role models like Natasha, in contributing to the nation.

Model Pupil 2014 Edusave Character Awards (ECHA) 2014

Our Model Pupil 2014 was Deanna Lawther Lim Yen Yen of 6 Diligence. Deanna has displayed much grit and perseverance in completing the Omega Challenge when the student leader scaled Mount Kinabalu. She is a faithful friend to all her peers, evident from how she had purposefully stayed behind to walk with a friend who was not feeling well. Deanna is also exemplary in her attitude, behaviour and character. Being a Sixer, she is also a proud Akela Award Winner, the highest honour in Scouting. She is definitely someone whom her friends and teachers can count on.

On being awarded the Model Pupil, Deanna cited her mantra to success, Success is like a demanding child - to tame her, feed her your time, effort and patience; to raise her, feed her your passion and to groom her, feed her your utmost.

  • As part of the SG50 celebrations and TKPs very own heritage education, 20 of our P5 and P6 students were involved in designing interactive learning trails (iTrails). These trails will be launched officially to the public on 22 May 2015 and integrated into our Social Studies curriculum for P4 and Post-PSLE activities for P6.

To capture unique aspects of Katong as a melting pot of rich heritage, students were not only involved in researching on Katongs past, they also designed hotspot activities before conducting recce to assess the suitability of the activities. Through the experiences, the students could better appreciate and play a part in preserving Singapores heritage.

    PARTNERING STAKEHOLDERS FOR A STUDENT-CENTRIC EDUCATION 7

To kick start the new academic year of 2015, TKP held its annual Curriculum Briefings for parents on two Saturdays, 17 and 24 January for Primary 1, 3 and 5 and Primary 2, 4 and 6 respectively. This move was carried out in response to the positive feedback received from parents when the P1 Form Teachers conducted the curriculum briefing for 2014. This year, all Form Teachers, from P1 to P6, shared the overview of the English, Mathematics and Science curriculum and programmes key to the level.

Mrs Athavle, whose son is in 6 Altruism, was appreciative that the teachers had taken time to enlighten parents on the curriculum and assessment format. From the feedback gathered, many parents found the briefing useful and informative. For many, it was also an opportunity to establish contact with the Form Teacher before the Meet - the - Parent Session at the end of the semester.

The annual Learning@TKP was held on Saturday, 7 March. A series of subject-specific workshops catering to lower and upper primary were conducted concurrently. Through these workshops, parents were made aware of the strategies adopted by teachers in teaching of the respective subjects. These workshops enable parents to further support their childs learning at home by practising and reinforcing some of

  • 8 PARTNERING STAKEHOLDERS FOR A STUDENT-CENTRIC EDUCATION

On 2 November 2014, 22 TKP students comprising students from performing arts CCAs and NE Ambassadors visited our twinning school, EICS in Surabaya, Indonesia for four days. Through the Surabaya Immersion Trip 2014, students who had gone on the trip shared that they had learnt many valuable lessons, particularly the values of respect, responsibility and adaptability.

This year, being the fourth year of collaboration, TKP is pleased to have received EICS from 2 to 4 February 2015. Both TKP and EICS students had engaged in meaningful interactions to understand each others culture. We look forward to the Surabaya Immersion Trip in September 2015!
