Our Purpose
The purpose of Les Femmes de Substance is to foster
leadership within Cornell's Black female population beyond
the first years of undergraduate education, but for a lifetime!
Through professional mentorship, educational advancement,
and community programming, LFDS strives to create true
Women of Substance by providing each woman with the tools
needed to help her reach her fullest potential.

Aid freshman women with their transition into the Cornell community
Assist Black women at Cornell pursue leadership roles and develop their professional ambitions
Reach out to all multicultural women at Cornell and provide them with skills needed to become Professional Women of
SubstanceProvide events and programs that pinpoint issues affecting women of African descent within Cornell’s community and
beyond

Founded in the Fall of 2003 byLisa Broadnax, Class of 2004

Our Fall EventsEbony MixerOur pivotal event directly aligned with the mission and purpose of LFDS, Ebony Mixer combines networking and sisterhood in an amicable and productive atmosphere. It is an event especially designed for the benefit of incoming freshmen women, but all are openly encouraged to attend and participate. Men Of Substance Showcase
(MOSS)Men of Substance Showcase (MOSS) is our annual women’s retreat fundraiser featuring selected men from the community where they showcase the skills and qualities that makes them a man of substance. Showcase includes talent, interview and swimwear portion.
Our Spring Events
Annual Women of Substance RetreatEach year the executive board of Les Femmes de Substance invites the women of Cornell to attend a unique off-campus retreat where women participate in workshops and social events that teach essential skills and foster growth within the female community.
Women’s Appreciation BanquetFormerly the Men’s Appreciation Banquet which was initiated in order to celebrate the wonderful men on Cornell’s campus, Les Femmes de Substance has revamped this event to highlight the high-achieving women on campus who are alltoo often left without recognition for their contribution to the betterment of the community.
