can you blame me? Really! Now you haven’t watched the wedding if you missed the kiss. Seemed like a shy moment for the newly-wed couple the pressure was on, I sat next to my

mum at this pint (awkward moment) we were both con-centrating then we spotted the peck. A bit lame but hey, it’s Kate and Wil-liam gotta love em! Wait, then there was another kiss that came out of

nowhere I was lucky enough to catch it but if you

didn’t the press and broadcasting organisations such as the BBC made sure to capture it and bombard our screens with the image. Lads you watched it too

don’t lie.

F riday 26th of April 2011 was a very impor-tant date for a Mr William and Miss Middleton. We all watched it here at Distinct. It was definitely a day to remember and best of all it was a national bank holi-day-woop! First things first. The dress it was cute. The designer Sarah Burton went for the perfect style for Kate, elegant, discreet and beautiful all wrapped up in a dress. As for Prince Wil-liam, guys I hope you were taking notes, he set the bar for handsome and suave. There was another man in the midst who set a trend and that was Mr Prince Har-ry, tell me you saw his swag the way he just rolled up in the church casually, it’s like he was saying –“yes bro do your thing, I got your back.” Prince Harry has got that wow factor-Ok maybe I have a slight crush on him but

Richer to buy University places? We all know that this new coali-

tion government have been set to change the system of secuuring a place at university, making it difficult for people from poorer bckgrounds. It

gets worse, the are now considering plans to allow the richest parents to pay upfrontfees costing the same as the intenational fees in order to secure

their child a place. Unfair or what! Aaron Porter Nus president said that, “The Government is yet again tossing out a poorly conceived policy idea in an attempt to disguise the chaos it has

created in university funding and the shortfall in finances that has created.

It’s the first issue the freshest new print publication and I am excited woohoo! The theme this month is no stress! It’s the exam period-Oh,the stress! No problem. We’ve decided to help you with time management, which seems to be a big problem for many students. Look out for the “prepare yourself sections” on the pages in the magazine. With summer fast approaching we wanted to equip our readers with the summer trends and hooked up with blogger of “Gob for fashion” and student who is also manager for Kurt Geiger, to give Distinct readers some tips (p4). Plus I got in touch with Videographer- Jamell Williams from Creative Juice. FYI he is a bit of a catch. Yes, he tells us all. He has worked with all the big names since studying ay Southampton Solent University (P6). April was a really busy month with events such as Rip the runway, (oh yes- its was certainly ripped alright) in London, pictures on (p11) and Northampton Universities A2g awards, (1920’s theme). Welcome to Distinct, the freshest new, unique magazine. Bringing you the latest in fashion and student news along with recent graduates and student interviews. Make sure you email me your first year stories, from drunken nights to work experience hook-ups. I want to know it all!. “Her designs are unique, the quality is divine and the swag

is unelieveable”.

Introducing... Pepsi Couture

I managed to catch up with Pepsi-before you wonder, yes that is her real name! She can take clothes and remodel it entirely. Studying a B-tec Diploma in fashion design at the college of North West London

helped to broaden her ideas but before she studied this course, making clothes for the family

and clients was her full time job. For my 21st birthday I asked Pepsi for my own tailor made

dress. I gave my design, bought the material and it took her no longer than two days to make. However it doesn’t stop there

she added a simple accesory to my dress which was a hood. I

looked the part and definately stood out she knows her customers. You sure are one

talented woman!*The waistcoat on the left was just a normal black H&M style waistcoat which she added lining to match the top and the skirt underneath.

*This is one way of styling it. Suitable for a night out.

Stunning genie style hooded top. Perfect for a night out or add to a simple out-fit to enhance the look.

PREPARE YOURSELF1.Drink lots of fluid during the exam period, specifically water. If the brain becomes dehydrated it makes you tired which is why many students are always sleepy and suffer from headaches during this time. Water is also good for the skin.2.It is handy to make a diary specifially for your exams identifying the date time andmodule to be taken. Keep key words and notes in that diary. It helps, I’ve tried.

Introducing... Pepsi Couture

“ Sometimes I don’t think of ideas straight away, I just try

something and then work with it. I also print and do beading work so I try to use all my skills where

necessary. I am fashion.”*I first spotted her detailed coat preview at her college fashion show. Gorgeous design the audience instantly fell in love and it was so good the Brent local newspaper had comment.Isn’t it just to die for!

*I’m sorry but did you see the back de-tail. This is actu-ally hand made.

PREPARE YOURSELF3.Be sure to get enough sleep. Although this seems obvious, many students think stay-ing up all night studying is a great way to learn, in fact you take in less information when you are tired. You cannot beat the body and it’s functions.4.Mock tests are a good way to revise and practice timing skills. Get your tutor to mark it if you can to help your revision.

Give us a rundown of the day and life of a stylist, I believe you have done some freelance work right?Yes, ermm...Well, I wake up depending on what time the shoot is going to start -occasionally; 9.00 am starts. I prep, which is one of the most stressful part of styling. Looking for outfits, contacting designers, models, photographers, MUA and hairstylist is not as easy as it looks. There will be disappointments and some of them often pull out last minute but its just about having a backup and knowing how to think on your feet.

The day of the shoot is where all the fun it, putting outfits together and making it as fun as possible. I like to be in charge of what hair and make-up looks like so I often create a mood board and distribute it around. The time I finish depends on the shoot. So I couldnt realy give specifics but it’s a long day. I love it!

What’s hot in fashion at the mo-ment?Summer is all about COLOUR BLOCKING. The catwalk and high street have been bom-barded with this trend.

Everyone is dying to be involved. The trend is very 70’s with its bold colors, such as green, yellow, pink, orange, a lot of white and many prints. Finish this look with a pair of Jimmy Choo sunglasses some flip flops and a large Mulberry bag.

Quickly, any last minute types for the Distinct reader?Fuller figured women: Wear the right size! Thats the secret to looking good. Finish with a pair of heels to create an increase in height bal-ance your width.

What to Avoid: Baggy clothing, tight clothing, layering. Say complete NO to stretchy fabrics.

For skinny women: Opt for layered clothing, No vertical stripes, Wear lower heels, get rid of your skinny jeans or super-tight pants.Wear chunky clothes, avoid belts at mid-waist and wear scarfs and high cowl-neck tops and sweat-ers. These all help to make you look as though you are bigger than what you actually are.

Closer to Jamell

Williams

“I direct, edit and video Capture. I love everything creative. Music entertainment

or fashion.” -Jamell Williams AKA Mr Damaje

Prepare Yourself5. Create a mind map listing all the Key words and phrases that will jog your memory in the exam.6. Eat well a healthy diet will lead to a healthy mind! Oldest technique in the book, yet alot of us don’t do it. Bad!7. Attend all revision classes and look for videos on youtube or other online tools in relation to your subject to give you some useful and visual tips for the exam. Images tend to stay in the mind, so it should be effective.

VIDEOGRAPHER Jamell Williams, 23, who also calls himself Mr Damaje. Graduated from Southampton Solent in 2009. From the age of 16 he was heavily involved in video media as he studied a Btec diploma in media production in college. “I direct, edit and video capture. I love everything creative. Music, entertainmentor fashion”.

The name Damaje derived from his earlier years at University when a Uni mate by the name of Delvene decided to collaborate in recording Uni productions and shows across the country. Originally, the name was damage but it didn’t fit what was to be birthed. It was at a dinner party in Delvene’s house that her mother came up with the name Damaje.

Third year came around and the two had a separate dream, Jamell wanted to continue with music and saw the name as brand, he renovated it to the new title MR DAMAJE for his own personal freelance videographer name. 2007 was a big year for Mr Damaje who met a guy called Sam around this time who started That Grapejuice, an urban blog which has boomed significantly since then. Everything started to fall into place around this time and with his roommate being a singer he doubled up as a fashion stylist and head videographer. These experiences led him to Videograph the likes of Tevin Campbell, Jon B, Day 26, Michelle Williams, Trey songs, Omarion, The Saturdays, Jason Derulo and many other famous names. Jamell recalls the only time being star struck and that was when he was asked by Beyonce’s management,

during her concert to go on tour in the UK, filming the events. The next day he was flown out to Newcastle then Nottingham and finally Manchester, which is where he shared the same hotel as the famous singer. He recalls walking to the lift when the doors open and it is Beyonce with her bodyguard. He was so star struck that he didn’t get in the lift, the doors closed and that was his big encounter with Beyonce-ouch!

Although Jamell (Mr Damaje) did attempt to go through the normal methods of finding a job by applying to the BBC and MTV but found after many attempts it becomes disheartening. Instead he done freelance, which is becoming increasingly popular.

“I think it’s a mixture of both who you know and what you know is what keeps you there and you have to be good or you will get replaced. I don’t like the word networking because of the idea, of meeting people just because you want something. I prefer to meet people and not be to eager and careful not to overstep. I’m one of those people that does what works for me.”

Kyle SimonGraphic Design 3rd year

So Kyle, tell us why you chose Graphic DesignI chose graphic design because I have always been a visually obsessed person, from a young age I was the student that was sent out of the class and given detention for doodling on the table, to put it simply I decided to turn my passion into a career. Art was my first route as an outlet but I realised that art is for the sake of art and has no purpose in this world other than to be admired and spark an emotional reaction from its audience. I came across design because unlike art it serves a purpose, anything that has been designed, was design to fill a gap in the world, in my opinion there is no greater appreciation for something that has been created that to know that what you created has communicated a message to someone. Graphic design is communication typographically and visually, road signs, emergency signs, posters, logos, and anything that tells you to do something or advertises something has been designed, at the

beginning of it there was a designer who thought about the best possible way to get a message across to you, though the colours the language and the font they decided to use, I chose graphic design because I have a passion for these minor details that help push a creation that extra mile. (all good designers have some form of OCD)

What advice would you give to the new first years studying this course in September?I cannot speak for other areas of art and design, but I can tell you that graphic design is not a lazy mans subject, it is tedious and it takes time. If you are interested in it you have to be prepared to make the smallest changes to your work so that you our proud of it (when I say smallest I mean as small as noticing that letters in a design you have made are to close together or far apart), he sighs. Good because it means that many designs are a matter of opinion meaning that on any art and design course your lecturers words are not

law, but it is bad because as a designer you procrastinate about reaching a design you are completely finished with, which is why I have ended up pulling all nighters and working up till the last hour of a deadline to finish my course work. If you do not have a passion for design it will show in your work, as you will miss those minor details and those with a designers eye will pick up on them. To my knowledge no course will teach you how to do all the fancy stuff on Photoshop and Illustrator you have to learn that stuff for yourself. As I and many people on my course have done. As cheesy as it my sound becoming a designer is a way of life, if it is the career for you then it will be in everything that you do and you will not see design as work you will see it as a mixture of play and duty, a creative outlet that could cause you to explode if you don’t design something in the next 30 seconds.

Prepare yourself8.Practice reading your notes aloud. It’s very effective as you are reapeating it over and over agin so you are more likely to remember it. Think of it like a presentation. 9. Writing down key words and examples over and over agiain helps certain people as they read and remember what they have writt10. Go over your old essay sand work related to the course, they are more likely to have a lot of information relating to the exam.
